Abstract:This paper examines the performance of trend-following trading strategies in commodity futures markets using a monthly dataset spanning 48years and 28 markets. We find that all parameterizations of the dual moving average crossover and channel strategies that we implement yield positive mean excess returns net of transactions costs in at least 22 of the 28 markets. When we pool our results across markets, we show that all of the trading rules earn hugely significant positive returns that prevail over most subperiods of the data as well. These results are robust with respect to the set of commodities the trading rules are implemented with, distributional assumptions, data-mining adjustments and transactions costs, and help resolve divergent evidence in the extant literature regarding the performance of momentum and pure trend-following strategies that is otherwise difficult to explain.

Abstract:Trend following strategies have a wide-ranging role in quantitative trading fields, which can capture important unilateral market trends for large gains, while this is vulnerable to losses in the period of consolidation. In this paper, we explored the trend trading system in the Chinese futures market based on machine learning techniques and statistical methods. This research utilized the Long-Short-Term Memory network to extract features of time series then predicted the price movements by Machine Learning classifiers. Moreover, based on rebar futures data, the results reveal that the annualized return improved from 6.39% to 15.68% after the trading signals generated in the trading strategy were filtered using the XGBoost model. Also, futures on gold and soybean were used to further test the integrated strategy and the results of the experiment show the effectiveness of the model in filtering false trading signals.

Abstract:This study analyzes the risk‐adjusted performance of commodity exchange‐traded funds (ETFs) across diverse market conditions. Examining monthly returns from December 2004 to June 2022, our findings suggest that commodity ETFs underperformed US stocks, indicating limited diversification benefits. However, we document positive α during turbulent market periods like the COVID‐19 crisis, signifying potential resilience. Furthermore, our factor regressions reveal that shifts in the global commodity price index and disposable personal income significantly influence commodity ETFs' excess returns, pointing to broader economic and income‐related trends. Commodity ETFs exhibit lower Value‐at‐Risk and Expected Shortfall compared to stock market indices, indicating reduced downside risk exposure for investors. Given the increasing popularity of commodity ETFs, these insights hold substantial significance for market participants.

Abstract:The Nelson-Siegel framework is employed to model the term structure of commodity futures prices. Exploiting the information embedded in the level, slope and curvature parameters, we develop novel investment strategies that assume short-term continuation of recent parallel, slope or butterfly movements of futures curves. Systematic strategies based on the change in the slope generate significant profits that are unrelated to previously documented risk factors and can survive reasonable transaction costs. Further analysis demonstrates that the profitability of the slope strategy increases with investor sentiment and is in part a compensation for the drawdowns incurred during economic slowdowns. The profitability can also be magnified through timing and persists under alternative specifications of the Nelson-Siegel model.

Abstract:Trend following strategy is a popular strategy that investors often use in trading around the world. Stocks are bought during an upswing and sold during a decline, the two main phases of the trend-following trading technique. This research evaluates the performance of the trend-following strategy in the Chinese commodity market by systematically employing quantitative methods to trade and get back test results for performance evaluation. The main trading indicator for this research is DMAC (Dual Moving Average Crossover) with a trend indicator called ADX for adjustment. As a kind of technical analysis, so-called "Dual Moving Average Crossovers" are often cited as providing reliable signs for discerning future stock price movements. By employing these indicators and systematically backtesting on 21 commodity futures for ten years, the research discovers that DMAC does not perform well (negative annualized return and sharpe ratio) from 2011 to 2021. By refining the strategy which is to replace DMAC with MACD (Moving Average Convergence/Divergence) and abandon ADX, the backtest result performs much better. The refinement suggests that the utilization of different trading signals/indicators will lead to a different performance of the trend following strategy in the Chinese commodity market. The research concludes that the trend following strategy is worthy of exploring in the Chinese commodity market in terms of using different trading indicators.

Abstract:This paper acts as a collection of various trading strategies and useful pieces of market information that might help to implement such strategies. This list is meant to be comprehensive (though by no means exhaustive) and hence we only provide pointers and give further sources to explore each strategy further. To set the stage for this exploration, we consider the factors that determine good and bad trades, the notions of market efficiency, the real prospect amidst the seemingly high expectations of homogeneous expectations from human beings and the catch-22 connotations that arise while comprehending the true meaning of rational investing. We can broadly classify trading ideas and client market color material into Delta-One and Derivative strategies since this acts as a natural categorization that depends on the expertise of the various trading desks that will implement these strategies. For each strategy, we will have a core idea and we will present different flavors of this central theme to demonstrate that we can easily cater to the varying risk appetites, regional preferences, asset management styles, investment philosophies, liability constraints, investment horizons, notional trading size, trading frequency and other preferences of different market participants.

Abstract:We use the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's Commitment of Traders report to investigate the trading behavior of traders in 12 commodity futures markets. Commercial traders are contrarian, consistent with anchoring and the prevalence of short hedgers. Noncommercial traders follow momentum strategies, reflecting the presence of CTAs trading in attention grabbing futures. Our key contribution is in understanding the effect of trading at the 52-week high and low – technical levels that are known to influence investor behavior – where we find trading is moderated at the 52-week high (anchor reversion) and accentuated at the 52-week low . Our results are consistent regardless of whether the futures market is in backwardation or contango. We find little support for evidence of market timing ability for either trader type.

Abstract:This article reviews the literature on commodities from the perspective of an investor. We re-examine some of the early papers in the literature using recent data and find that the empirical support for the theory of normal backwardation as an explanation for the commodity risk premium is weak and that the evidence is more consistent with storage decisions. We then review the behavior of the main participants in the commodity futures markets with a particular focus on their impact on prices. Although there is continued disagreement in the literature about the role of speculative activity, our results show that money managers are generally momentum (positive feedback) traders, while producers are net short and contrarian (negative feedback) traders. There is less evidence that index traders and swap dealers trade based on past futures returns.

Abstract:In this study, we applied a stochastic spread pairs trading strategy on the Indian commodity market. The complete set of commodities were taken whose spot price was available for the period of January 1st 2010 to December 31st 2018 including energy, metals and the agricultural commodity sector. Spot data was taken from the MCX pooled spot prices for 17 commodities. The data was split into training period (January 1st 2010 to 14th March 2017) and testing period(15th Match 2017 to 31st December 2018). The splitting was done using a 80:20 split.Johanssen Cointegration tests were done on training data for pairs of commodities to check for long-run relationship and the cointegrated commodities were selected for formation of the trading process. We found a total of 12 cointegrated pairs out of 136 possible pairs. Cointegration was assumed for the testing period. A single-factor stochastic trading approach was applied on the logarithmic spread of the cointegrated pairs for both the training and testing period.The parameters of stochastic spread model were estimated using differential evolution algorithm. Also parameters for the trading rule were optimized by backtesting on the training period and assumed for the testing period. The results show a sharpe ratio of above 1.4 for all the commodity cointegrated pairs in the backtesing period.

Abstract:This study analyzes statistical calendar spread arbitrage strategies based on intraday high frequency data for the Shanghai and Shenzhen 300 stock index futures using a model designed to explain the price spread between two Shanghai and Shenzhen 300 stock index future contracts and a model to trigger or stop arbitrage trades.The two models are then combined into a single arbitrage strategy algorithm for Shanghai and Shenzhen 300 stock index futures with methods given to estimate the proper model parameters.A half second of sample data is used to empirically validate the algorithm's effectiveness with a strict hypothesis on transaction cost.

Abstract:Trend-following has actively been on investors’ radar for the last few decades. The J.P. Morgan primer on momentum strategies (Kolanovic and Wei, 2015) provides an extensive review of the momentum strategies. The current paper focuses on a concrete trend-following solution and analyzes its properties alongside the practical implementation. More concretely, the goal of the current paper is threefold:• First, a trend-following signal based on statistical theory is proposed and we analytically investigate its properties. We reconcile the theoretical results with stylized facts about trend-following investing – ‘CTA smile’, the link to straddles and the better performance of so-called ‘slower’ signals. • Second, based on the theoretical results we propose a prototype trend-following solution that uses a unified approach across assets and diversifies across time-frames. Its performance versus benchmarks and diversification properties for long-only portfolios are highlighted within simulation examples.• Third, we elaborate on the portfolio and risk management of the trend-following strategy. We illustrate how the risk-budgeting and the Hierarchical Risk Parity (HRP) approaches can be adapted to the trend-following framework. Various methods to manage the transaction costs aspects of the strategy have also been discussed. In particular, we show how to limit the downside in the case of trendless market and how to take into account the implications of the carry component in many futures and FX forwards.

Abstract:Based on high-frequency data of CSI 300 index futures, this paper studies the profits of calendar spread arbitrage in the CSI 300 index futures market. This paper tests the co-integration relationship between two series of prices which are from two contracts with different delivery days. According to the theory of calendar spread arbitrage, we proposed a strategy which is effective in practice. Moreover, we test the effectiveness of this strategy using historical market data and record the opportunities and profits of arbitrage. The results show that there have been opportunities for calendar spread arbitrage since CSI 300 index futures launched. However, as the market is becoming mature and more traders enter in the market, the profits of calendar spread arbitrage are decreasing gradually.

Abstract:This article attempts to establish a trading strategy framework based on deep neural networks for the futures market, which consists of two parts: time series forecasting and trading strategies based on trading signals. In the time series forecasting task, we experimented with three types of methods with different entry points, namely recurrent neural networks with gate structure, networks combining time and frequency domain information, and network structures using attention mechanism. In the trading strategy part, the buying and selling signals and the corresponding trading volume are established according to the prediction results, and trading is conducted with the frequency of hours. In the empirical exploration part, we tested the prediction effect and strategic rate of return of various models on the copper contract. The data shows that in general, the best strategy can obtain a relatively stable income growth that has nothing to do with market fluctuations, but lacks countermeasures for rare external events with greater impact.
Common Factors in Commodity Futures Curves

Abstract:Literature studying comovement in commodity prices provides mixed evidence for whether commodity markets are segmented or driven by common factors. We provide a joint framework to study comovement across 24 of the most traded commodities over 20 years. The framework benefits from using the whole commodity futures curve, not just the nearest futures contract. Using all curve data we find that there is a strong comovement, though this is mostly due to sector commonalities. Furthermore, the importance of a common market factor is overestimated when using only the nearest futures data. Both these findings shed light on the contradicting conclusions in existing literature. Additionally we find that the importance of the common factors varies over time, with a stronger factor structure arising in recent years.

Abstract:Market trends have been one of the highly debated phenomena in the financial industries and academia. Prior works show the profitability in exploiting transactions via market trend quantification; on the other hand, traders’ behaviors and effects on the market trends can be better understood by market trend studies. In general, the trading strategies on the market trend include trend following strategies and contrarian strategies. Following the trend, trading strategies exploit the momentum effects. The momentum strategies profit in a long position with the rising market prices, as well as in a short position with the decreasing market prices. On the contrary, the view of contrarian trading strategy is based on the mean-reversion property, i.e., a long position is taken when the price moves down and a short position is taken when the price moves up. In this paper, we apply the stop-loss and stop-profit mechanisms to verify the market trends based on two new simple strategies, i.e., the BuyOp. strategy and the BuyHi.SellLo. strategy. We back-test these two strategies on the Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Stock Index Futures (TAIEX Futures) during the period from May 25, 2010 to August 19, 2015. We compare the numerical results of its profits and losses through various stop-loss thresholds and stop-profit thresholds, and verify the existence of the momentum effect via applying these two new trading strategies. Besides, we analyze the market trends through the repeated simulations of random trades with the stop-loss and stop-profit mechanisms. Our numerical results reveal that there exist momentum effects in TAIEX Futures, which verifies the market inefficiency and the market profitability in exploiting the market inefficiency. In addition, the techniques of random trades are also applied to the other commodities, such as AAPL in NASDAQ, IBM, GOOG in NYSE, and, TSMC in TPE, and so on. Surprisingly, not all the stocks have the momentum effects. Our experimental results show that some stocks or markets are more suitable for the mean-reverse strategy. Finally, we propose a technique to quantify the momentum effect of a financial market by using Jensen–Shannon divergence.

Return seasonality in commodity futures

Abstract:We examine seasonality in commodity futures markets using monthly returns for 26 commodities from 1970 through 2023. Only a few commodities in the early years show half-monthly and monthly seasonality. The same-month trading strategy proposed by Keloharju et al. (2016) outperforms the other-month strategy mostly for the subperiod 1990–1999. We then backtest the momentum strategy and momentum with a reversal strategy to compare their performance with that of a seasonality strategy. When these momentum-and-reversal strategies are combined with the seasonality strategy, the result has significant composite returns. Moreover, the seasonal effects in the commodity futures market have weakened in recent years, indicating that the market tends toward efficiency. Nevertheless, our overall results demonstrate that the effects of combination strategies persist and significantly impact the market.

Abstract:Using a unique dataset of daily returns of 89 programmes of Commodity Trading Advisors (CTA), we investigate the distributional properties of CTA strategies including trend following, fundamental and contrarian strategies. We find that daily data exhibits strong features of fat-tail, volatility clustering, and long memory in volatility. This is different from previous studies which are often based on monthly data. Our study contributes to the literature of stylized facts of financial markets, it also provides insights to practitioners because the information from monthly data might be misleading.
