Abstract:Nonreciprocal charge transport phenomena are widely studied in two-dimensional superconductors, which demonstrate unidirectional-anisotropy magnetoresistances as a result of symmetry breaking. Here, we report a strong nonreciprocal transport phenomenon in superconducting CsV 3 Sb 5 thin flakes. The second harmonic voltages, mainly originating from the rectification effect of vortex motion, are unambiguously developed with in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields, and their magnitudes are comparable to those in noncentrosymmetric superconductors. The second harmonic magnetoresistances split into several peaks and some of them reverse their signs by ramping the magnetic field or the current within the superconducting transition. The nonreciprocity suggests a strong asymmetry in CsV 3 Sb 5 . The centrosymmetric structure and symmetric electronic phases in CsV 3 Sb 5 can hardly induce the distinct nonreciprocal transport phenomenon, which could be correlated to a symmetry breaking from an unconventional superconducting order parameter symmetry.

Giant nonreciprocity of current-voltage characteristics of noncentrosymmetric supercondctor-normal metal-superconductor junctions

Abstract:We develop a theory of nonreciprocal current-voltage (I-U) characteristics in noncentrosymmetric superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junctions. We show that at small voltages the nonreciprocal features of the I-U characteristics can be expressed entirely in terms of the dependence of the nonreciprocal part of the quasiparticle density of states in the normal metal part of the junction on the order parameter phase difference $\chi$ across the junction. The amplitude of the nonreciprocity in this regime is proportional to the inelastic quasiparticle relaxation time $\tau_{in}$, and can be much larger than that in normal materials, where it is proportional to the elastic relaxation time $\tau_{el}$. At low bias the I-U characteristics possess additional symmetry, not present in normal conductors; they remain invariant under simultaneous reversal of current, voltage and the magnetic field.

Abstract:The search for superconducting systems exhibiting nonreciprocal transport and, specifically, the diode effect, has proliferated in recent years. This trend encompasses a wide variety of systems, including planar hybrid structures, asymmetric SQUIDs, and certain noncentrosymmetric superconductors. A common feature of such systems is a gyrotropic symmetry, realized on different scales and characterized by a polar vector. Alongside time-reversal symmetry breaking, the presence of a polar axis allows for magnetoelectric effects, which, when combined with proximity-induced superconductivity, results in spontaneous non-dissipative currents that underpin the superconducting diode effect. This symmetry established, we present a comprehensive theoretical study of transport in a lateral Josephson junctions composed of a normal metal supporting the spin Hall effect, and attached to a ferromagnetic insulator. Due to the presence of the latter, magnetoelectric effects arise without requiring external magnetic fields. We determine the dependence of the anomalous current on the spin relaxation length and the transport parameters commonly used in spintronics to characterize the interface between the metal and the ferromagnetic insulator. Therefore, our theory naturally unifies nonreciprocal transport in superconducting systems with classical spintronic effects, such as the spin Hall effect, spin galvanic effect, and spin Hall magnetoresistance. We propose an experiment involving measurements of magnetoresistance in the normal state and nonreciprocal transport in the superconducting state. Such experiment, on the one hand, allows for determining the parameters of the model and thus verifying with a greater precision the theories of magnetoelectric effects in normal systems. On the other hand, it contributes to a deeper understanding of the underlying microscopic origins that determine these parameters.

Abstract:The nature of the charge carriers in high-Tc cuprates is an essential issue to reveal their novel physical properties and the mechanism of their superconductivity. However, the experimental probes and the theoretical analysis have been mostly restricted to the linear responses. On the other hand, recent observations of Rashbatype spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the surface of high-Tc cuprates imply the possible nonlinear and nonreciprocal transport phenomena under in-plane magnetic fields. In this paper, we study the nonreciprocal transport properties on the surface of cuprates by employing a U(1) gauge theory framework, where the electrons are considered to be fractionalized. Our investigation highlights the intricate variations in nonreciprocal transport with respect to temperatures and dopings. First, it reveals contrasting behavior of nonreciprocity in each normal phase. Second, it discerns the tendencies between underdoped and overdoped superconducting states and their paraconductivity. The complex behaviors of nonreciprocal transport originate from the spinful and spinless nature of the charge carriers and their kinetic energy scales. These findings pave a new avenue to explore the electronic states in high-Tc cuprates in terms of nonreciprocal transport phenomena.

Abstract:Nonreciprocal transport, an exciting quantum physical phenomenon arising from symmetry breaking, can be significantly magnified in the superconducting state. Recent progresses have demonstrated it as a unique probe of the pairing mechanisms in symmetry-breaking superconductors (SCs). Here, we report the nonreciprocal charge transport of the superconductivity in the Bi/Ni bilayer, a p-wave SC candidate. The nonreciprocal transport signal is dramatically enhanced under in-plane magnetic field, but vanishes under perpendicular magnetic field. Interestingly, the nonreciprocal transport is magnified in the temperature regime that can be associated with notable vortex motion. Our results provide compelling evidence for the Rashba superconductivity in the Bi/Ni bilayer with in-plane spin splitting, a precursor for the p-wave SC, which might hold promise for future topological quantum computing applications.

Abstract:The longitudinal nonreciprocal charge transport (NCT) in crystalline materials is a highly nontrivial phenomenon, motivating the design of next generation two-terminal rectification devices (e.g., semiconductor diodes beyond PN junctions). The practical application of such devices is built upon crystalline materials whose longitudinal NCT occurs at room temperature and under low magnetic field. However, materials of this type are rather rare and elusive, and theory guiding the discovery of these materials is lacking. Here, we develop such a theory within the framework of semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. By symmetry analysis, we classify the complete 122 magnetic point groups with respect to the longitudinal NCT phenomenon. The symmetry-adapted Hamiltonian analysis further uncovers a previously overlooked mechanism for this phenomenon. Our theory guides the first-principles prediction of longitudinal NCT in multiferroic ε−Fe2O3 semiconductor that possibly occurs at room temperature, without the application of external magnetic field. These findings advance our fundamental understandings of longitudinal NCT in crystalline materials, and aid the corresponding materials discoveries. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.133.096802 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Nontrivial topological band structures in semiconductors such as chiral materials give rise to intriguing topological phases, unique spin texture, and novel quantum physical phenomena. However, the transport behaviors of two-dimensional Weyl semiconductors with the Fermi level adjacent to Weyl nodes are seldom explored. Here, we systematically investigate the magnetoresistance (MR) and nonreciprocal transport of the two-dimensional tellurene nanostructure with unexpected phenomena. With the participation of the Weyl nodes in the carrier transport, an unreported negative MR is obtained in the weak magnetic field range of 0-2 T. Additionally, because of the Fermi surface splitting induced by the Weyl nodes, the onset magnetic field required for quantum oscillation was reduced to similar to 3.5 T which is much lower than that in bulk tellurium (10 T). Moreover, a perpendicular spin component is observed in the Fermi surface near the Weyl nodes, which is detected by the angle-dependent measurement of the nonreciprocal signal of bilinear magnetoresistance. This work deepens the understanding of Weyl physics and highlights an efficient way for the detection of nonreciprocal transport and the construction of corresponding spin texture. The results pave the way for potential applications in designing topological semiconductor devices.

Abstract:We study superfluidlike spin transport facilitated by thermal diffusion of magnetic domain walls, where the positive and negative chiralities of domain walls act as opposite topological charges. The topological charge conservation leads to algebraic decay of spin current carried by domain walls, allowing for the transport of spin over extended distances. We demonstrate that the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can lead to nonreciprocity in spin flow, thus effectively realizing a spin ratchet. In one scenario, the nonreciprocity arises due to diode-like behavior where the nucleation of domain walls is governed by thermal activation for one direction of spin current and by viscous injection for the other direction of spin current. We confirm our predictions by micromagnetic simulations of domain walls in TmIG nanowire.

Abstract:Non-reciprocal charge transport has gained significant attention due to its potential in exploring quantum symmetry and its promising applications. Traditionally, non-reciprocal transport has been observed in the longitudinal direction, with non-reciprocal resistance being a small fraction of the ohmic resistance. Here we report a transverse non-reciprocal transport phenomenon featuring a quadratic current–voltage characteristic and divergent non-reciprocity, termed the non-reciprocal Hall effect. This effect is observed in microscale Hall devices fabricated from platinum (Pt) deposited by a focused ion beam on silicon substrates. The transverse non-reciprocal Hall effect arises from the geometrically asymmetric scattering of textured Pt nanoparticles within the focused-ion-beam-deposited Pt structures. Notably, the non-reciprocal Hall effect generated in focused-ion-beam-deposited Pt electrodes can propagate to adjacent conductors such as Au and NbP through Hall current injection. Additionally, this pronounced non-reciprocal Hall effect facilitates broadband frequency mixing. These findings not only validate the non-reciprocal Hall effect concept but also open avenues for its application in terahertz communication, imaging and energy harvesting.

Abstract:Nonreciprocal charge transport in heterostructural superconductors exhibits appealing quantum physical phenomena and holds the promising potential for superconducting circuits applications. Realizing a nonreciprocity is, however, fundamentally and technologically challenging, as it requires a material structure without a centre of inversion, which is scarce among superconducting materials. Here, we report an evidence of helical superconductivity, in which the Rashba spin-orbit coupling induces momentum-dependent superconducting gap in the inversion symmetry breaking heterointerface superconductor consisting of Mott insulating Ti$_2$O$_3$ and polar semiconducting GaN. Remarkably, the nonlinear responses emerge in the superconducting transition regime, when the magnetic field is precisely aligned in-plane orientations perpendicular to the applied current. In particular, the observed nonreciprocal supercurrent is extremely sensitive to the direction of the magnetic field for 0.5 degree, suggestive of a crossover from a symmetry breaking state to a symmetric one. Our finding not only unveils the underlying rich physical properties in heterointerface superconductors, but also provides an exciting opportunity for the development of novel mesoscopic superconducting devices.

Abstract:Ohm's law has been a cornerstone of electronics since its experimental discovery. This law establishes that in a conductive system, the voltage is directly proportional to the current. Even when time-reversal symmetry is disrupted, leading to the emergence of magnetoresistance and Hall effects, the linear relationship between voltage and current remains intact. However, recent experiments have demonstrated a breakdown of Ohm's law in non-centrosymmetric structures. In these systems, non-linear transport effects are permitted with quadratic scaling between voltages and currents. Here, we review the main demonstrations of non-linear transport in non-centrosymmetric systems, analyzing the connection between non-linear behavior and the system's symmetry. Additionally, we delve into the microscopic mechanisms driving these effects, such as Berry curvature dipole and Berry connection polarizability. Finally, we highlight potential applications of non-linear transport in spintronics and energy harvesting.

Nonlinear optical responses in superconductors under magnetic fields: quantum geometry and topological superconductivity

Abstract:Noncentrosymmetric superconductors offer fascinating phenomena of quantum transport and optics such as nonreciprocal and nonlinear responses. Time-reversal symmetry breaking often plays an essential role in the emergence and enhancement of nonreciprocal transport. In this paper, we show the nonreciprocal optical responses in noncentrosymmetric superconductors arising from time-reversal symmetry breaking by demonstrating them in $s$-wave superconductors with a Rashba spin-orbit coupling and a magnetic field. Numerical results reveal the superconductivity-induced bulk photocurrent and second harmonic generation, which are forbidden at the zero magnetic field. We discuss the properties and mechanisms of the superconducting nonlinear responses emerging under the magnetic field. In particular, we investigate the magnetic-field dependence of the photocurrent conductivity and clarify the essential ingredients which give a contribution unique to superconductors under the magnetic field. This contribution is dominant in the low carrier density regime although the corresponding joint density of states is tiny. We attribute the enhancement to the quantum geometry. Moreover, the nonlinear conductivity shows peculiar sign reversal at the transition to the topological superconducting state. We propose a bulk probe of topological transition and quantum geometry in superconductors.

Abstract:Recently, nonreciprocal charge transport has emerged as an important experimental tool for detecting symmetry breaking in noncentrosymmetric crystals. Despite extensive studies on systems with intrinsic symmetry breaking from crystal structures or interfaces, nonreciprocal transport induced by extrinsic mechanisms, such as the asymmetric design of device geometry, remains largely unexplored. Here, we show that a giant nonreciprocal resistance arises extrinsically from the thermoelectric effect due to nonuniform current heating in mesoscopic devices. Taking NbAs nanobelts as an example, we observe giant second-harmonic resistances induced by the Seebeck and Nernst effects, with a nonreciprocal coefficient value up to 5.4 x 10(-6) cm(2)/A, which is higher than that of most noncentrosymmetric crystals. The symmetry of second-harmonic resistance in magnetic fields can be further controlled by designing the electrode geometry and is decoupled from that of the first-harmonic resistance or the crystal symmetry. We show that such thermoelectric related nonreciprocal resistances also exist in macroscopic samples up to hundreds of microns. Our results not only introduce a simple yet effective approach to probe the thermoelectric effect, but also reveal a previously underestimated mechanism that strongly modifies the second-order transport coefficients.
Proximity effect of time-reversal symmetry broken non-centrosymmetric superconductors

Abstract:In non-centrosymmetric superconductors the pair potential has both even-parity singlet and odd-parity triplet components. If time-reversal symmetry is broken, the superconducting phase of these components is not the same, for example in anapole superconductors. In this paper it is shown that breaking time-reversal symmetry by a phase difference between the two components significantly alters both the density of states and the conductance in s+helical p-wave superconductors. The density of states and conductance in s+chiral p-wave superconductors are less influenced by adding a phase difference because time reversal symmetry is already broken in the s+p-wave superconductor. The Tanaka-Nazarov boundary conditions are extended to 3D superconductors, allowing to investigate a greater variety of superconductors, such as B-W superconductors, in which the direction of the d-vector is parallel to the direction of momentum. The results are important for the determination of pair potentials in potentially time-reversal symmetry broken non-centrosymmetric superconductors.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of nonreciprocal superconductors where inversion and time-reversal symmetries are broken, giving rise to an asymmetric energy dispersion. We demonstrate that nonreciprocal superconductivity can be detected by Andreev reflection. In particular, a transparent junction between a normal metal and a nonreciprocal superconductor generally exhibits an asymmetric current-voltage characteristic, which serves as a defining feature of nonreciprocal superconductivity. Unlike the superconducting diode effects, our detection scheme has the advantage of avoiding large critical currents that turn the superconducting state to normal. Finally, we discuss candidates for nonreciprocal superconductivity, including graphene, UTe2, as well as engineered platforms.

Relations between normal state nonreciprocal transport and the superconducting diode effect in the trivial and topological phases

Abstract:Nonreciprocal transport effects can occur in the normal state of conductors and in superconductors when both inversion and time-reversal symmetry are broken. Here, we consider systems where magnetochiral anisotropy (MCA) of the energy spectrum due to an externally applied magnetic field results in a rectification effect in the normal state and a superconducting (SC) diode effect when the system is proximitised by a superconductor. Focussing on nanowire systems, we obtain analytic expressions for both normal state rectification and SC diode effects that reveal the commonalities - as well as differences - between these two phenomena. Furthermore, we consider the nanowire brought into an (almost) helical state in the normal phase or a topological superconducting phase when proximitised. In both cases this reveals that the topology of the system considerably modifies its nonreciprocal transport properties. Our results provide new insights into how to determine the origin of nonreciprocal effects and further evince the strong connection of nonreciprocal transport with the topological properties of a system.

Abstract:Nonreciprocal transport, characterized by its direction-selective nature, holds significant potential for applications in various devices. In this study, we investigate nonreciprocal heat transport in Majorana systems, specifically focusing on the Kitaev chiral spin liquid under external magnetic fields. Our theoretical examination focuses on effects of open boundaries in which the Majorana edge modes exist, and the inversion symmetry is broken, which leads to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Through perturbation theory, we demonstrate that DMI induces asymmetric hopping, resulting in the asymmetry of the Majorana band. The results of nonreciprocal heat currents are presented for various directions of external magnetic fields, and we discuss the relation between the current and the field-directions. The potential exists to manipulate both of the directions and magnitude of the non-dissipative current by varying external magnetic fields and apply to non-dissipative heat transfer devices.
