Abstract:Context: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is one of the most commonly performed gastrointestinal procedures, despite absence of benefit in many patients and risks associated with the procedure. Increased education of primary care physicians about the shortcomings of PEG may allow for better selection of patients to be referred for PEG placement. Evidence acquisition: We performed a comprehensive literature review by searching PUBMED using the search headings percutaneous enteral gastrostomy, PEG, complications, dementia, stroke, dysphagia, malnutrition, and complications. We identified English language articles from 1980 onward. The highest quality data were considered to be randomized controlled trials although given the paucity of trials in this area, we used all of the various types of literature. Evidence synthesis: We based the major conclusions of this review, where possible, on the most robust literature, namely, controlled trials. However, the majority of the available literature in this field is based on case series. We attempted to maximize the use of larger case series with longer term follow-up. Case reports were used only to report on rare complications where no other literature was available. Conclusions: Despite more than 30 years of experience with PEG, numerous questions remain regarding the utility of nutrition support in many of the clinical scenarios in which PEG placement is contemplated. There is a multitude of evidence that artificial nutrition does not improve outcome or quality of life in patients with dementia who have decreased oral intake. It is likely that ethical, moral, religious, and legal considerations of family members and caregivers play a role in the decision to place a PEG in a patient with dementia despite the medical evidence demonstrating lack of benefit.

Abstract:Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement is often the preferred treatment of choice for enteral nutrition in patients that require long-term nutritional support because of swallowing difficulties. This is generally a safe procedure with few serious problems, however, there are rare complications that can be life-threatening if left untreated. Herein, we report a case of septic-appearing subcutaneous emphysema following PEG tube placement in a patient with a traumatic brain injury.

Outcomes of stroke patients undergoing percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (P.E.G.) is recommended for stroke patients with dysphagia to sustain oral nutrition. Objective: This study assesses the outcomes of stroke patients undergoing P.E.G. compared with those requiring nasogastric tube (N.G.T) or control group. Methods: We performed a thorough search across five electronic databases to gather pertinent studies. Outcomes were analyzed using relative risk (R.R.) for categorical data and mean difference (M.D.) for continuous data, each with 95% confidence intervals (C.I.). The single-arm meta-analysis results were presented as proportions or mean changes, also with 95% C.I. Results: We included 22 studies consisting of 996,567 patients. Our double-arm meta-analysis (924,134 patients) revealed no significant difference in post-hospitalization or in-hospital mortality between P.E.G. and control groups. However, P.E.G. patients showed a higher risk of aspiration pneumonia than control (R.R. = 11.72[3.75, 36.62], p < 0.00001). A comparison of P.E.G. and N.G.T. in three studies involving 691 patients indicated a non-significant difference in-hospital mortality risk (R.R. = 0.59, 95% C.I. [0.2, 1.72]). The single-arm analysis of stroke patients with P.E.G. identified a 19.8% in-hospital mortality, 13.6% rate of aspiration pneumonia, and 58% rate of pneumonia. Conclusion: Stroke patients undergoing P.E.G remain at high risk for aspiration pneumonia and with an in-hospital mortality suggesting the need for identifying the best candidates and timing for the procedure.
PEG--A New Way of Enteral Nutrition Feeding

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the value of percutaneous endoscopy gastrostomy(PEG) in nutrition support of neurosurgical and neurological patients. Methods: Thirty patients had undergone PEG.HXResults: Nutritional status was improved in the survival patients and the lung infections were controlled.Seven patients recovered with oral intake and 10 patient were discharge from hospital with the feeding tube for further rehabilitation,3 patients died from the deterioration of the original disease.Two cases had the inflammation at the PEG wound but easily treated.No other complications of PEG occured. Conclusions: PEG is safe and effective for enteral nutrition in some neurosurgical and neurological patients.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the application of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) to patients with severe craniocerebral injury for the purpose of nutritional support therapy and pulmonary infection prevention.Methods: A total of 43 patients with severe craniocerebral injury admitted to our department from January 2008 to December 2012 received PEG followed by nutritional therapy. There were other 82 patients who were prescribed nasal-feeding nutrition. Nutrition status was evaluated by comparing serum albumin levels, and the incidence of pulmonary infection 1 week before and 2 weeks after operation was identified and compared.Results: Both PEG and nasal-feeding nutrition therapies have significantly elevated serum albumin levels (P<0.05). Serum albumin levels before and after nutritional therapies showed no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). The incidence of pulmonary infection in PEG group was significantly decreased compared with that in nasal-feeding nutrition group (P<0.05).Conclusion: PEG is an effective method for severe craniocerebral injury patients. It can not only provide enteral nutrition but also prevent pulmonary infection induced by esophageal reflux.

Abstract:Background: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube has now become a preferred option for the long-term nutritional support device for patients with dysphagia. There is a considerable debate about the health issues related to the quality of life of these patients. Our aim of the study was to assess the outcome and perspectives of patients/care givers, about the acceptability of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement. Methods: This descriptive analytic study conducted in patients, who have undergone percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement during January 1998 till December 2004. Medical records of these patients were evaluated for their demographic characteristics, underlying diagnosis, indications and complications. Telephonic interviews were conducted till March 2005, on a pre-tested questionnaire to address psychological, social and physical performance status, of the health related quality of life issues. Results: A total of 191 patients' medical records were reviewed, 120 (63%) were males, and mean age was 63 years. Early complication was infection at PEG tube site in 6 (3%) patients. In follow up over 365 +/- 149 days, late complications (occurring 72 hours later) were infection at PEG tube site in 29 (15 %) patient and dislodgment/blockage of the tube in 26 (13.6%). Interviews were possible with 126 patients/caretakers. Karnofsky Performance Score of 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 was found in 13(10%), 18(14%), 21(17%), 29(23%) and 45(36%) with p-value < 0.001. Regarding the social and psychological aspects; 76(60%) would like to have the PEG tube again if required, 105(83 %) felt ease in feeding, and 76(60%) felt that PEG-tube helped in prolonging the survival. Regarding negative opinions; 49(39 %) felt that the feeding was too frequent, 45(36 %) felt apprehensive about dependency for feeding and 62(49%) were concerned about an increase in the cost of care. Conclusion: PEG-tube placement was found to be relatively free from serious immediate and long- term complications. Majority of caregivers and patient felt that PEG-tube helped in feeding and prolonging the survival. Studies are needed to assess the real benefit in terms of actual nutritional gain and quality of life in such patients.
Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and impaired pulmonary function

Abstract:Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a rapidly progressive disease of unknown etiology resulting in tetraparalysis, dysarthria, dysphagia, and ultimately death from respiratory insufficiency. In the course of the disease, recurrent episodes of aspiration, pneumonia, dehydration, and malnutrition may necessitate nasoenteral tube placement, an inconvenient and unattractive arrangement in patients with dribbling and impaired swallowing. A percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy seemed a better, though potentially hazardous, alternative in view of the often severely restricted pulmonary function of these patients. Therefore, we prospectively investigated the use of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in 68 consecutive patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Minimum required pulmonary function was defined as forced vital capacity (FVC) of 1 L or more and CO2 gas exchange capability as pCO2 of 45 mm Hg or less. The methodology of insertion was adapted to facilitate the early removal of gastric air. Fifty-five patients (median FVC, 1.7 L; pCO2, 40 mm Hg) were eligible for the gastrostomy procedure, and 13 patients (median FVC, 0.8 L; pCO2, 47 mm Hg) were not. Despite the fact that modification of the method of insertion rendered the procedure more difficult, the success rate was 89% (49/55); it was 96% (49/51) when failures related to distorted anatomy were excluded. The procedure-related mortality rate was 1.8% and the 24-hour in-hospital mortality rate was 3.6%, mainly related to respiratory insufficiency. The 30-day out-of-hospital mortality rate was 11.5%. Major complications (3.6%) consisted of a spontaneously draining cutaneous abscess in 2 cases. Peristomal redness was present in 6 cases, and 5 patients required analgesics for wound pain.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract:Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is commonly seen among the elderly with a substantial proportion of patients suffering from long-term dysphagia and/or an inability to protect their airway. This potentially imposes on them an increased risk of malnutrition and aspiration pneumonia. In this article, we present a patient with malnutrition and dysphagia secondary to CVA. We propose a procedure for which we will name the Percutaneous ENdoscopIc Gastrostomy and Tracheostomy (PENlIGhT) procedure for placement of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) and tracheostomy tube (TT) at the same time. The medical literature was systematically reviewed for both PEG and tracheostomy, aiming to provide the state-of-the-art evidence for clinical use of the PENlIGhT procedure. In clinical practice, the PENlIGhT procedure is indicated for patients who are expected to have prolonged swallowing disturbance and mechanical ventilation. Some prediction tools and scores can be helpful to identify such groups of patients. Patients with poor neurological outcomes who require prolonged maintenance of life are also good candidates for the PENlIGhT procedure.
Complications of Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy in Head and Neck Cancer Patients

Abstract:Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) has been shown to benefit patients with resectable carcinoma of the head and neck. In order to determine whether patients with existing tumor or postresection anatomic changes of the upper respiratory tract can undergo this procedure with an acceptably low complication rate, 349 patients with attempted PEG were studied. The PEG procedure was successful in 114 of 122 carcinoma patients, as compared to 220 of 227 patients in a control group (patients with neurologic disease). Intraoperative complications preventing PEG placement included pharyngeal or esophageal obstruction, inadequate transillumination of the abdominal wall, and respiratory distress and occurred in 7% of carcinoma patients and 3% of controls. The incidence of airway obstruction during endoscopy was equal between groups (1%). Postoperative complications related to the gastrostomy tube were more frequent in the nonhead and neck cancer group (14% versus 5%). Younger age, fewer concomitant medical problems, and better nutritional status may account for this difference. These findings suggest that preoperative, postoperative, and unresectable head and neck cancer patients are appropriate candidates for PEG, and postgastrostomy performance appears superior to that in other patient populations.
Single-centre endoscopic gastrostomy placement results: Experience and management of complications and side effects of nutritional products; review of 426 case presentations

Abstract:Introduction: We aim to present the results, experience, and management of the complications and side effects of nutritional products in geriatric patients (age≥65 years) who underwent percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy. Materials and Method: Between January 01, 2018, and 31 December 2021 we examined 426 patients from the endoscopy and intensive care units. We assessed their primary diseases, insertion indications, procedural complications (endoscopy unit, patient bedside, surgery-household), consultations in the clinic, and procedural morbidity and mortality. Results: Tubes were successfully placed in 426 patients but could not be inserted in 2 patients. The most common indication was cerebrovascular disease (45.3%) and the most common complication was catheter mobilization 16 (3.7%), primarily due to caregivers after discharge. In one patient, the tube passed through the transverse colon before reaching the stomach. This was noticed during colonoscopy and subsequently removed, after which the wound was closed primarily without any major complications. Wound infection resulting from leakage from the side of the tube, occurred in 12 patients (2.8%). Complications were more frequent in male patients aged > 70 years. The most common side effects of nutritional products in these patients were intolerance and diarrhoea. Conclusion: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is safe and minimally invasive endoscopic procedure associated with low rate of morbidity. Clinicians can maximize outcomes and identify complications early by being aware of complications and utilizing preventive strategies. Furthermore, they need to be aware of the proper management of nutritional products’ side effects. Keywords: Aged; Endoscopy; Critical Care; Gastrostomy.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in a general hospital: prospective evaluation of indications, outcome, and randomised comparison of two tube designs

Abstract:The indications for percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) and patient outcome, were examined prospectively in the setting of a general hospital. In the course of 26 months, 76 patients underwent PEG (median age 62 years (range 18-99)) and were followed up for 6887 patient days. The median (range) duration of PEG feeding was 93 (3-785) days. The procedure was carried out for neurological indications in 76% of cases (stroke 51%) and 53% of patients were severely malnourished (body mass index < 17 kg/m2) at the time of referral. In 12 (16%) patients swallowing recovered and the PEG was removed after a median (range) of 55 days (20-150). Three (4%) deaths were related to PEG (one oesophageal perforation, one haemorrhage, and one aspiration pneumonia). One patient developed peritonism and ileus, which resolved with conservative treatment. Minor complications included local sepsis 3%, tube blockage 12%, and tube connector leak 5%. During seven days of observation, demands on nursing time for routine care of the PEG were the same as for nasogastric tube feeding, median (range) 21 (4-42) v 16 (4-40) min/day respectively, but in about half the latter cases the tube had to be replaced at least once. Over 15 months, 29 patients were randomised to receive a 1.9 mm inner, 2.9 mm (9F) outer diameter Fresenius and 27 a 3.0 mm inner, 4.0 mm (12F) outer diameter Bower polyurethane tube and were followed for 2920 and 2388 patient days respectively. There was no difference in the insertion time (median (range) 20 (10-45) v 24 (10-45) min respectively) or number of patients with complications (three v eight patients NS), although there were more minor mechanical problems (three v 12, p < 0.01) with the 12F tube. The internal anchoring device of the 12F tube allowed its non-endoscopic removal, a method applicable too 16% of cases. No tubes were removed because of blockage.
Study of Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the value of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) in the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients with dysphagia. Method Sixty-five ALS patients underwent PEG from April 2005 to July 2010 were analysed retrospectively. Results All the 65 patients underwent PEG,and 2 patients failed because of dyspnea. Totally 63 patients were intubated successfully,the successful rate was 96.9%(63/65). The operation time was 8-17 min. Two patients had local infection.After 3 months, the body mass index was increased from (18.3 ± 1.0) kg/m2 to (19.7 ± 1.2) kg/m2(t = 15.8,P ＜ 0.01), without peritonitis, migration of the gastrostomy tube and other complications. Conclusions PEG is a safe method with a low complication for ALS patients to get enteral nutrition. Dyspnea is the main reason of failure.

Abstract:Background: Gastrostomy tube insertion is beneficial to selected patients, and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) and percutaneous radiological gastrostomy (PRG) are two of the frequently used methods in gastrostomy. This study aimed to investigate the indications and complications of both PEG and PRG. Methods: This was a retrospective multicenter cohort study. Patients who underwent initial PEG or PRG tube insertion for nutritional purpose between January 2010 and December 2015 at five university hospitals were included in the study. We analyzed the indications and all complications related to gastrostomy, which were divided into the major (systemic or life-threatening) and minor (local and non-life-threatening) categories. Results: A total of 418 patients who underwent PEG (n = 324) and PRG (n = 94) were reviewed. The indications for gastrostomy tube insertion were different and included mainly neurological disease (n = 240, 74.1%) such as cerebrovascular accident in the PEG group (n = 119, 36.7%) and mainly surgical disease (n = 28, 29.8%) such as head and neck cancer (n = 16, 17.0%) in the PRG group (p = 0.05). There were no differences in the minor (16.4% vs. 19.1%, p = 0.52) and major (12.3% vs. 14.9%, p = 0.51) complication rates between the PEG and PRG groups. The risk factors for complications were age [yearly increments; odds ratio (OR) 1.03, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.01-1.06], tube diameter (1-Fr increments; OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.01-1.58), insertion time (1-min increments; OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.01-1.13), and neurological disease as the gastrostomy indication (vs. surgical disease; OR 4.61 95% CI 1.47-14.42). Conclusions: In our study, both PEG and PRG provided a safe route for nutrition delivery despite their different indications. Our data suggest that PEG might be the procedure of choice for patients with medical or neurological disease and PRG for patients with surgical disease in whom PEG is technically difficult or contraindicated.

Abstract:This report concerns percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) administered in the neurosurgical care unit to a patient with dysphasia. This reliable nutrition route has the major advantage of minimal surgical invasion and can be expected to become a standard nutritional method. Since patients with neurological disorders account for the majority of those who need PEG, neurosurgeons need to be aware of the importance of PEG.

Abstract:Dysphagia is common in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients, often requiring percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) for enteral nutrition. We retrospectively analyzed data from 188 Korean patients with ALS who underwent PEG tube insertion at five-time points: symptom onset (t 1 ), diagnosis (t 2 ), recommended time for gastrostomy (t 3 ), PEG insertion (t 4 ), and one-year post-insertion (t 5 ). The recommended time point for gastrostomy (T -rec for gastrostomy) was defined as the earlier time point between a weight loss of more than 10% and advanced dysphagia indicated by the ALSFRS-R swallowing subscore of 2 or less. The T -rec for gastrostomy was reached at 22 months after symptom onset, followed by PEG insertion at 30 months, resulting in an 8-month delay. During the delay, the ALSFRS-R declined most rapidly at 1.7 points/month, compared to 0.8 points/month from symptom onset to diagnosis, 0.7 points/month from diagnosis to T -rec for gastrostomy, and 0.6 points/month after the PEG insertion. It is crucial to discuss PEG insertion before significant weight loss or severe dysphagia occurs and minimize the delay between the recommended time for gastrostomy and the actual PEG insertion. A stratified and individualized multidisciplinary team approach with careful symptom monitoring and proactive management plans, including early PEG insertion, should be prioritized to improve patient outcomes.

Abstract:IIntroduction: patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) require nutritional support, in most cases with enteral nutrition through gastrostomy, either endoscopic (PEG) or radiological (PRG). Objectives: to analyze the characteristics of patients with ALS at the time of PEG/PRG placement, and to compare the efficacy and safety of PRG versus PEG. Methods: a retrospective descriptive study. All patients with ALS who required gastrostomy in the last 3 years (2021-2023) in our hospital were recruited (4 PEG and 6 PRG). Demographic and nutritional parameters were analyzed. Results: ten patients were included, with an average age of 57 years. All patients presented with dysphagia and received oral or tube supplements prior to gastrostomy placement. The average duration of enteral nutrition was approximately 50 months, with a mortality rate of 30 % at 12 months after gastrostomy. The success rate of PEG and PRG was similar, with no complications. All patients developed deterioration of respiratory function, even after nutritional support. Conclusion: gastrostomy should be indicated as soon as a patient is at risk of aspiration pneumonia or when weight loss begins. Although the nutritional benefit of gastrostomy is well established, there is currently a delay between diagnosis and placement of approximately 4 years. PRG appears to be safer than PEG in patients with ALS and respiratory failure.
Efficacy and Safety of Percutaneous Radiological Gastrostomy (PRG) as a Rescue Measure for Enteral Feeding in Patients with Advanced Head, Neck, and Upper Digestive Malignancies

Abstract:Background Percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy is an established mode of enteral feeding for nutritional support for patients with dysphagia from upper digestive tract malignancy. Its role as a rescue measure in patients with advanced malignancy, presenting with absolute dysphagia and failure of nasogastric tube insertion has not been well established. Purpose This study was performed to assess technical success and long-term outcomes of percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy (push type) for nutritional support for patients with absolute dysphagia as a last ditch nonsurgical rescue effort for enteral access. Materials and Methods This was a prospective observational study of 31 patients who underwent push-type percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy over a period of 2 years (March 2017-March 2019). The study was a part of a larger trial approved by the institutional ethics committee. Patients were followed till the removal of tube, death, or 1 year, whichever was earlier. Gastrostomy tube-related problems and complications were documented. Descriptive summary statistics were employed to analyze the success rate and complications. Results Thirty-one patients with mean age 56 years (26-78 years) including 18 males and 13 females with head and neck squamous cell cancer and esophageal cancer presenting with absolute dysphagia or significant dysphagia with failed nasogastric or endoscopic enteral access were included. Overall technical success was 93.5% (29/31), achieved in 26/31 patients with just fluoroscopy guidance and 3/5 patients with computed tomography guidance. One major (3.3%) and two minor (6.5%) complications were encountered. Five out of 29 gastrostomy tubes had to be exchanged, after a mean of 44 days (1-128 days) after insertion. Conclusion Percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy is a safe and effective intervention even as a rescue measure in patients with absolute dysphagia from advanced upper digestive tract malignancies.

Abstract:Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a relatively safe and well-known procedure. It is typically performed by a gastroenterologist or surgeon in malnourished patients who cannot take oral intake secondary to dysphagia caused by chronic diseases such as stroke. It provides long-term enteral nutritional support. Early complications can include pneumoperitoneum and gastric perforation. Some reported late complications include gastric ulcers at the insertion site caused by pressure from the external bolster, and gastric outlet or duodenal obstruction caused by a migrated gastrostomy tube. Following the correct technique for gastrostomy tube insertion, appropriately positioning the external bolster, monitoring the external length and bolster's location, and promptly adjusting a displaced tube can prevent further complications.

Abstract:Aims: Since its description in 1980, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy has become the modality of choice for providing enteral access to patients who require long-term enteral nutrition. This study aimed to evaluate current indications and complications associated with PEG feeding. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all patients who referred to our endoscopic unit of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the Medical Center University of Sarajevo for PEG tube placement over a period of 7 years. Medical records of 359 patients dealing with PEG tube placement were reviewed to assess indications, technical success, complications and the need for repeat procedures. Results: The indications for enteral feeding tube placement were malignancy in 44% (n=158), of which 61% (n=97) patients were suffering of head and neck cancer and 39% (n=61) of other malignancy. Central nervous disease was the indication in 48.7 % (n=175) of patients. Cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) accounted for 20% (n=73), head injury for 16% (n=59) and cerebral palsy for 11% (n=38). In 6.13% (n=22) of patients minor complications occur which included wound infection (0.8%), inadvertent PEG removal (2.5%) and tube blockage (1.1%). 11 patients experienced major complications including hemorrhage, tube migration and perforation. There were no deaths related to PEG procedure placement and the overall 30-day mortality rate due to primary disease was 15.8%. Oral feeding was resumed in 23% of the patients and the tube was removed subsequently after 6 -12 months. Conclusions: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is a save and minimally invasive endoscopic procedure associated with a low morbidity (9.2%) rate, easy to follow-up and to replace when blockage occurs. Over a seven-year period we noticed an increase of 63% in PEG placement at our department.

Abstract:Introduction/Aims Patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are susceptible to malnutrition, with appropriate management of nutritional interventions an active area of investigation. We sought to determine the impact of gastrostomy tube placement in ALS patients, exploring the correlation between forced vital capacity (FVC), malnutrition, and perioperative complications. Methods A retrospective review was performed of clinically diagnosed ALS patients treated at two multidisciplinary clinics (University of Kansas, University of Nebraska) from January 2009 to September 2020 who were referred for gastrostomy. Data collected included demographics, disease characteristics, and key gastrostomy related dates/outcomes. Results Two hundred thirty‐nine patients were included with a median age of 65 years and median of 589 days from symptom onset to gastrostomy (interquartile range, 404–943). The population was predominantly Non‐Hispanic White with bulbar‐onset ALS. 30‐day mortality was 4% and 30‐day morbidity was 13%. Weight loss, body mass index, and predicted FVC at placement showed no increased 30‐day morbidity or mortality association. Bulbar‐onset ALS patients exhibited higher overall mortality postplacement than limb onset (odds ratio: 1.85, 95% confidence interval: 1.03–3.33). There was a 5% incidence of symptoms suggestive of refeeding syndrome. Discussion Rates of major/minor complications and 30‐day mortality related to gastrostomy placement in our population were similar compared with prior studies in ALS. The lack of difference in outcomes based on FVC at procedure may suggest this is not predictive of outcome, or perhaps, high‐quality perioperative respiratory management. Alternative reasons may account for the increased morbidity and mortality of gastrostomy placement in the ALS population.
