Abstract:Superconducting quantum processors are a compelling platform for analogue quantum simulation due to the precision control, fast operation and site-resolved readout inherent to the hardware. Arrays of coupled superconducting qubits natively emulate the dynamics of interacting particles according to the Bose–Hubbard model. However, many interesting condensed-matter phenomena emerge only in the presence of electromagnetic fields. Here we emulate the dynamics of charged particles in an electromagnetic field using a superconducting quantum simulator. We realize a broadly adjustable synthetic magnetic vector potential by applying continuous modulation tones to all qubits. We verify that the synthetic vector potential obeys the required properties of electromagnetism: a spatially varying vector potential breaks time-reversal symmetry and generates a gauge-invariant synthetic magnetic field, and a temporally varying vector potential produces a synthetic electric field. We demonstrate that the Hall effect—the transverse deflection of a charged particle propagating in an electromagnetic field—exists in the presence of the synthetic electromagnetic field.

Abstract:In cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), the key physical systems include Fabry-Pérot cavity resonators and multilevel cold atoms. Since ultra-strong electromagnetic interaction between photons and quantized cavity modes occurs in cavity QED, many novel quantum optical effects such as optical Rabi oscillation, quantum collapse/revival of atomic-level population and atom-field quantum entanglement can be realized in such quantum microcavities. As is known in quantum optics, these schemes can be generalized to circuit QED, which is a circuit analog of cavity QED. Fundamental devices in circuit QED are superconducting coplanar waveguide microwave resonators and mesoscopic Cooper-pair boxes. Here, the coplanar waveguide resonator with photons stored can be identified as a resonant cavity and the Cooper-pair boxes with large electric dipoles play the role of multilevel cold atoms. Thus, all the quantum optical effects in conventional cavity QED can also be exhibited in the present superconducting circuit QED system. We consider the theoretical working mechanism of superconducting charge qubits based on tunable Josephson junction coupling. It can be found that an analog of optical Rabi oscillation in Cooper-pair boxes can be achieved by tuning an applied external magnetic field. Time evolution of energy levels in a Cooper-pair box, which is manipulated by a time-dependent magnetic flux through its Josephson-junction ring, is studied within the framework of time-dependent quantum mechanics.

Near-term Applications of Superconducting Digital Quantum Simulation

Abstract:Quantum simulation, as a practical application of noisy quantum computing, has aided the study of exotic quantum matters and the implementation of algorithms that outperform classical approaches. Superconducting qubits, one of the most promising candidates for realizing universal quantum computing, possess state-of-the-art features like easy integration of qubits, long coherence time, and high-fidelity single- and two-qubit gates. These characteristics have enabled applications of digital quantum simulation in the fields of physics, chemistry, and computer science. In this review, we first present the basic concepts of superconducting qubits, quantum gates, and digital quantum simulations. We also explore recent progress in digital quantum simulations using superconducting qubits, especially in relation to quantum chemistry, quantum matters, combinatorial optimization, and quantum machine learning. Finally, we address the current challenges of digital quantum simulation with superconducting qubits, and provide a perspective on the future of the field.

Abstract:Ever since Heisenberg's proposal of a quantum-mechanical origin of ferromagnetism in 1928, the spin model named after him has been central to advances in magnetism, featuring in proposals of novel many-body states such as antiferromagnets, emergent gauge fields in their confined (valence bond crystal) and deconfined (resonating valence bond spin liquids) versions. Between them, these cover much of our understanding of modern magnetism specifically and topological states of matter in general. Many exciting phenomena predicted theoretically still await experimental realisation, and cold atomic systems hold the promise of acting as analogue 'quantum simulators' of the relevant theoretical models, for which ingenious and intricate set-ups have been proposed. Here, we identify a new class of particularly simple quantum simulators exhibiting many such phenomena but obviating the need for fine-tuning and for amplifying perturbatively weak superexchange or longer-range interactions. Instead they require only moderate on-site interactions on top of uncorrelated, one-body hopping--ingredients already available with present experimental technology. Between them, they realise some of the most interesting phenomena, such as emergent synthetic gauge fields, resonating valence bond phases, and even the celebrated yet enigmatic spin liquid phase of the kagome lattice.

Abstract:A two-component fermion model with conventional two-body interactions was recently shown to have anyonic excitations. We here propose a scheme to physically implement this model by transforming each chain of two two-component fermions to the two capacitively coupled chains of superconducting devices. In particular, we elaborate how to achieve the wanted operations to create and manipulate the topological quantum states, providing an experimentally feasible scenario to access the topological memory and to build the anyonic interferometry.

Abstract:Hybrid quantum circuits combine two or more physical systems, with the goal of harnessing the advantages and strengths of the different systems in order to better explore new phenomena and potentially bring about novel quantum technologies. This article presents a brief overview of the progress achieved so far in the field of hybrid circuits involving atoms, spins and solid-state devices (including superconducting and nanomechanical systems). How these circuits combine elements from atomic physics, quantum optics, condensed matter physics, and nanoscience is discussed, and different possible approaches for integrating various systems into a single circuit are presented. In particular, hybrid quantum circuits can be fabricated on a chip, facilitating their future scalability, which is crucial for building future quantum technologies, including quantum detectors, simulators, and computers.

Abstract:Using superconducting quantum circuit elements, we propose an approach to experimentally construct a Kitaev lattice, which is an anisotropic spin model on a honeycomb lattice with three types of nearest-neighbor interactions and having topologically protected ground states. We study two particular parameter regimes to demonstrate both vortex and bond-state excitations. Our proposal outlines an experimentally realizable artificial many-body system that exhibits exotic topological properties.

Abstract:Abstract We propose a superconducting qubit that fully emulates a quantum spin-1/2, with an effective vector dipole moment whose three components obey the commutation relations of an angular momentum in the computational subspace. Each of these components of the dipole moment also couples approximately linearly to an independently-controllable external bias, emulating the linear Zeeman effect due to a fictitious, vector magnetic field over a broad range of effective total fields around zero. This capability, combined with established techniques for qubit coupling, should enable for the first time the direct, controllable hardware emulation of nearly arbitrary, interacting quantum spin-1/2 systems, including the canonical Heisenberg model. Furthermore, it constitutes a crucial step both towards realizing the full potential of quantum annealing, as well as exploring important quantum information processing capabilities that have so far been inaccessible to available hardware, such as quantum error suppression, Hamiltonian and holonomic quantum computing, and adiabatic quantum chemistry.

Abstract:Two of the major obstacles to achieve quantum computing (QC) are (i) scalability to many qubits and (ii) controlled connectivity between any selected qubits. Using Josephson charge qubits, here we propose an experimentally realizable method to efficiently solve these two central problems. Since any two charge qubits can be effectively coupled by an experimentally accessible inductance, the proposed QC architecture is scalable. In addition, we formulate an efficient and realizable QC scheme that requires only one (instead of two or more) two-bit operation to implement conditional gates.
Superconducting Circuit Probe for Analog Quantum Simulators

Abstract:Analog quantum simulators can be used to study quantum correlation in novel many-body systems by emulating the Hamiltonian of these systems. One essential question in quantum simulation is to probe the properties of an emulated many-body system. Here we present a circuit QED scheme for probing such properties by measuring the spectrum of a superconducting resonator coupled to a quantum simulator. We first study a general framework of this approach and show that the spectrum of the resonator is directly related to the correlation function of the coupling operator between the resonator and the simulator. We then apply this scheme to a simulator of the transverse field Ising model implemented with superconducting qubits, where the resonance peaks in the resonator spectrum correspond to the frequencies of the elementary excitations. The effects of resonator damping, qubit decoherence, and resonator backaction are also discussed. This setup can be used to probe a broad range of many-body models.

Abstract:Superconducting circuits based on Josephson junctions exhibit macroscopic quantum coherence and can behave like artificial atoms. Recent technological advances have made it possible to implement atomic-physics and quantum-optics experiments on a chip using these artificial atoms. This Review presents a brief overview of the progress achieved so far in this rapidly advancing field. We not only discuss phenomena analogous to those in atomic physics and quantum optics with natural atoms, but also highlight those not occurring in natural atoms. In addition, we summarize several prospective directions in this emerging interdisciplinary field.
Magnon-mediated quantum gates for superconducting qubits

Abstract:We propose a hybrid quantum system consisting of a magnetic particle inductively coupled to two superconducting transmon qubits, where qubit-qubit interactions are mediated via magnons. We show that the system can be tuned into three different regimes of effective qubit-qubit interactions, namely a transverse ($XX + YY$), a longitudinal ($ZZ$) and a non-trivial $ZX$ interaction. In addition, we show that an enhanced coupling can be achieved by employing an ellipsoidal magnet, carrying anisotropic magnetic fluctuations. We propose a scheme for realizing two-qubit gates, and simulate their performance under realistic experimental conditions. We find that iSWAP and CZ gates can be performed in this setup with an average fidelity $\gtrsim 99 \% $ , while an iCNOT gate can be applied with an average fidelity $\gtrsim 88 \%$. Our proposed hybrid circuit architecture offers an alternative platform for realizing two-qubit gates between superconducting qubits and could be employed for constructing qubit networks using magnons as mediators.

Abstract:Spin qubits in semiconductors are a promising platform for producing highly scalable quantum computing devices. However, it is difficult to realize multiqubit interactions over extended distances. Superconducting spin qubits provide an alternative by encoding a qubit in the spin degree of freedom of an Andreev level. These Andreev spin qubits have an intrinsic spin–supercurrent coupling that enables the use of recent advances in circuit quantum electrodynamics. The first realization of an Andreev spin qubit encoded the qubit in the excited states of a semiconducting weak link, leading to frequent decay out of the computational subspace. Additionally, rapid qubit manipulation was hindered by the need for indirect Raman transitions. Here we use an electrostatically defined quantum dot Josephson junction with large charging energy, which leads to a spin-split doublet ground state. We tune the qubit frequency over a frequency range of 10 GHz using a magnetic field, which also enables us to investigate the qubit performance using direct spin manipulation. An all-electric microwave drive produces Rabi frequencies exceeding 200 MHz. We embed the Andreev spin qubit in a superconducting transmon qubit, demonstrating strong coherent qubit–qubit coupling. These results are a crucial step towards a hybrid architecture that combines the beneficial aspects of both superconducting and semiconductor qubits.

Abstract:Superconducting qubits provide a competitive platform for quantum simulation of complex dynamics that lies at the heart of quantum many-body systems, because of the flexibility and scalability afforded by the nature of microfabrication. However, in a multiqubit device, the physical form of couplings between qubits is either an electric (capacitor) or magnetic field (inductor), and the associated quadratic field energy determines that only two-body interaction in the Hamiltonian can be directly realized. Here, we propose and experimentally synthesize a three-body spin-chirality interaction in a superconducting circuit based on Floquet engineering. By periodically modulating the resonant frequencies of the qubits connected with each other via capacitors, we can dynamically turn on and off qubit-qubit couplings and further create chiral flows of the excitations in the three-qubit circular loop. Our result is a step toward engineering dynamical and many-body interactions in multiqubit superconducting devices, which potentially expands the degree of freedom in quantum simulation tasks.
Fermionic Quantum Simulation on Andreev Bound State Superlattices

Abstract:Arrays of superconducting qubits and cavities offer a promising route for realizing highly controllable artificial materials. However, many analog simulations of superconducting circuit hardware have focused on bosonic systems. Fermionic simulations, on the other hand, have largely relied on digital approaches that require non-local qubit couplings, which could limit their scalability. Here, we propose and study an alternative approach for analog fermionic quantum simulation based on arrays of coherently coupled mesoscopic Josephson junctions. These Josephson junction arrays implement an effective superlattice of Andreev bound state "atoms" that can trap individual fermionic quasiparticles and, due to their wavefunction overlap, mediate quasiparticle hoppings. By developing a Wannier function approach, we show that these Andreev bound state arrays form an all-superconducting and circuit QED-compatible platform for emulating lattice models of fermionic quasiparticles that are phase- and gate-programmable. Interestingly, we also find that the junction lattices can undergo a topological transition and host fermionic boundary modes that can be probed by conductance measurements. We hope our results will inspire the realization of artificial and possibly topological materials on Andreev bound state quantum simulators.

Abstract:Quantum computing is an exciting field that uses quantum principles, such as quantum superposition and entanglement, to tackle complex computational problems. Superconducting quantum circuits, based on Josephson junctions, is one of the most promising physical realizations to achieve the long-term goal of building fault-tolerant quantum computers. The past decade has witnessed the rapid development of this field, where many intermediate-scale multi-qubit experiments emergedtosimulatenonequilibriumquantummany-bodydynamicsthatarechallenging for classical computers. Here, we review the basic concepts of superconducting quantum simulation and their recent experimental progress in exploring exotic nonequilibrium quantum phenomena emerging in strongly interacting many-body systems, e.g., many-body localization, quantum many body scars, and discrete time crystals. We further discuss the prospects of quantum simulation experiments to truly solve open problems in nonequilibrium many-body systems.

Abstract:In the design and investigation of superconducting qubits and related devices, a lumped-element circuit model is the standard theoretical approach. However, many important physical questions lie beyond its scope, such as the behavior of circuits with strong Josephson junctions carrying substantial currents and the properties of very small superconducting devices. By performing gauge transformations on self-consistent solutions of the Bogoliubov–de Gennes equations, we develop here a formalism that treats Josephson couplings nonperturbatively. We apply the formalism to (a) show that Fermi sea effects can contribute to the effective capacitance of small charge qubits; (b) demonstrate an asymmetry in clockwise and counterclockwise current states in small rf superconducting quantum interference device qubits; and (c) provide a microscopic wave function of superconducting Schrödinger cats suitable for computing the number of entangled electrons. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.21.024030 Published by the American Physical Society

Extracting Equations of Motion from Superconducting Circuits

Abstract:Alternative computing paradigms open the door to exploiting recent innovations in computational hardware to probe the fundamental thermodynamic limits of information processing. One such paradigm employs superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) to execute classical computations. This, though, requires constructing sufficiently complex superconducting circuits that support a suite of useful information processing tasks and storage operations, as well as understanding these circuits' energetics. First-principle circuit design, though, leads to prohibitive algebraic complications when deriving the effective equations of motion -- complications that to date have precluded achieving these goals, let alone doing so efficiently. We circumvent these complications by (i) specializing our class of circuits and physical operating regimes, (ii) synthesizing existing derivation techniques to suit these specializations, and (iii) implementing solution-finding optimizations which facilitate physically interpreting circuit degrees of freedom that respect physically-grounded constraints. This leads to efficient, practical circuit prototyping and access to scalable circuit architectures. The analytical efficiency is demonstrated by reproducing the potential energy landscape generated by the quantum flux parametron (QFP). We then show how inductively coupling two QFPs produces a device that is capable of executing 2-bit computations via its composite potential energy landscape. More generally, the synthesis methods detailed here provide a basis for constructing universal logic gates and investigating their thermodynamic performance.
