Abstract:This chapter examines the methods by which the principal potassium raw materials are recovered and transformed into marketable potassium fertilizers. Practically all of the potassium fertilizers produced is derived from bedded deposits of water‐soluble potassium minerals or brines. The chapter describes prevailing practices in mining underground potassium ore deposits and handling of brines relative to potassium fertilizer production. The technology of potassium fertilizer production includes the following operations: extraction of the basic potassium‐bearing raw materials from the earth's crust and separation of the desired potassium material from the undersirable portions of the original ores or brines. Potassium fertilizers are normally solid compounds and, except for the small amounts of specialty materials which may be transported in liquid form, are available to consumers in bulk and packaged forms. Although significant quantities of potassium are applied directly to the soil, most of the potassium is used in the form of mixed fertilizers.
