Abstract:The positron annihilation lifetime spectra and their temperature dependence for the YBa2Cu3Oy superconducting ceramics doped with Sn have been studied. The results of analyses indicate that the element Sn is substituted for Cu(1) sites, and this leads to the ordering of the oxygen atoms as well as the increase of local electronic density in the Cu(1)-O layer where Cu(1) is substituted by Sn.
Electron-hole asymmetry of quantum collective excitations in high-$T_c$ copper oxides

Abstract:We carry out a systematic study of collective spin- and charge excitations for the canonical single-band Hubbard, $t$-$J$-$U$, and $t$-$J$ models of high-temperature copper-oxide superconductors, both on electron- and hole-doped side of the phase diagram. Recently developed variational wave function approach, combined with the expansion in inverse number of fermionic flavors, is employed. All three models exhibit a substantial electron-hole asymmetry of magnetic excitations, with a robust paramagnon emerging for hole-doping, in agreement with available resonant inelastic $x$-ray scattering data for the cuprates. The $t$-$J$ model yields additional high-energy peak in the magnetic spectrum that is not unambiguously identified in spectroscopy. For all considered Hamiltonians, the dynamical charge susceptibility contains a coherent mode for both hole- and electron doping, with overall bandwidth renormalization controlled by the on-site Coulomb repulsion. Away from the strong-coupling limit, the antiferromagnetic ordering tendency is more pronounced on electron-doped side of the phase diagram.

Abstract:A reconstruction technique based on Radon transforms is used to obtain 3D electron momentum density rho(p) using nine recently measured high-resolution Compton profiles (CPs) from a Cu_{0.9}Al_{0.1} disordered alloy single crystal. The method was also applied to nine corresponding theoretical CPs computed within the KKR-CPA first-principles scheme in order to show that our reconstruction procedure reproduces rho(p) reasonably. We comment briefly on how well a map of the Fermi surface (FS) can be obtained by folding the reconstructed rho(p) into the first Brillouin zone.

Abstract:Angle-resolved photoemission data from the cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta above and below the superconducting transition temperature Tc reveal momentum-dependent changes that extend up to an energy of about 0.3 electron volt, or 40kTc (where k is the Boltzmann constant). The data suggest an anomalous transfer of spectral weight from one momentum to another, involving a sizable momentum transfer Q approximately (0.45pi, 0). The observed Q is intriguingly near the charge-order periodicity required if fluctuating charge stripes are present.

Abstract:High temperature superconductivity in cuprates arises from doping a parent Mott insulator by electrons or holes. A central issue is how the Mott gap evolves and the low-energy states emerge with doping. Here we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on a cuprate parent compound by sequential in situ electron doping. The chemical potential jumps to the bottom of the upper Hubbard band upon a slight electron doping, making it possible to directly visualize the charge transfer band and the full Mott gap region. With increasing doping, the Mott gap rapidly collapses due to the spectral weight transfer from the charge transfer band to the gapped region and the induced low-energy states emerge in a wide energy range inside the Mott gap. These results provide key information on the electronic evolution in doping a Mott insulator and establish a basis for developing microscopic theories for cuprate superconductivity.

Abstract:We study the electronic structure of Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d samples in a wide range of doping, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, with emphasis on on the Fermi surface (FS) in the near anti-nodal region. The "nesting wave vector", i.e., the wave vector that connects two nearly flat pieces of the Fermi surface in the anti-nodal region, reveals a universal monotonic decrease in magnitude as a function of doping. Comparing our results to the charge order recently observed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), we conclude that the FS nesting and the charge order pattern seen in STS do not have a direct relationship. Therefore,the charge order likely arises due to strong correlation physics rather than FS nesting physics.

Abstract:The photoemission line shape near (pi, 0) in Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) below T(c) is characterized by a sharp peak, followed at higher energy by a dip and hump. We study the evolution of this line shape as a function of momentum, temperature, and doping. We find the hump scales with the peak and persists above T(c) in the pseudogap state. We present strong evidence that the peak-dip-hump structure arises from the interaction of electrons with a collective mode of wave vector (pi, pi). The inferred mode energy and its doping dependence agree well with a magnetic resonance observed by neutron scattering.

Abstract:High-temperature (high- Tc) superconductivity in the copper oxides arises from electron or hole doping of their antiferromagnetic (AF) insulating parent compounds. The evolution of the AF phase with doping and its spatial coexistence with superconductivity are governed by the nature of charge and spin correlations, which provides clues to the mechanism of high- Tc superconductivity. Here we use neutron scattering and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) to study the evolution of the bosonic excitations in electron-doped superconductor Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4−δ with different transition temperatures (Tc) obtained through the oxygen annealing process. We find that spin excitations detected by neutron scattering have two distinct modes that evolve with Tc in a remarkably similar fashion to the low-energy electron tunnelling modes detected by STS. These results demonstrate that antiferromagnetism and superconductivity compete locally and coexist spatially on nanometre length scales, and the dominant electron–boson coupling at low energies originates from the electron-spin excitations. The combination of bulk momentum-space and local real-space probes shows that superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in an electron-doped copper oxide superconductor coexist and compete on a nanometre scale, with electronic spin excitations that are probably involved in the superconducting pairing mechanism.

Abstract:The lifetime parameters of positrons annihilating in the high Tc superconductor YBaCuO are first reported to show the anomalies at the transition temperature region, indicating the abrupt decrease of local electron density at the positron site, possibly due to the lattice relaxation or due to the interaction between crystallites of nomal state and that of the superconducting state, which coexist at the phase transition period.

Abstract:The positron annihilation technique has been used for studying the high-T c -superconductor YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-x . The Doppler broadening lineshape parameter as a function of temperature between 75 and 300 K, and the positron lifetimes of the normal state and of the superconducting state have been measured. A sharp negative anomaly in the S-parameter was observed near the superconducting transition temperature. In addition, it was found that the S-parameter and mean lifetime decrease below the transition temperature T c . These phenomena vanish for the samples annealed in vacuum at 800 degrees C. It is suggested that high-T c superconductivity in the new oxide is probably accompanied by an adjustment in the positions of the oxygen vacancies and the occurrence of 'valence pairs', i.e. an enhancement of the covalent character of the electrons after the superconducting transition.

Abstract:The temperature dependences of the positron annihilation lifetime and Doppler broadening have been measured in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconducting system from 77 to 300 K. The results show the existence of two superconducting phases: Tc=90 K 2212 phase and Tc=107 K 2223 phase, with the latter being dominant. Two anomalies were detected around 145 and 250 K, respectively. The role of long-time sintering and adding Pb and Nb in Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O is demonstrated in stabilizing the 2223 phase.

Abstract:We present a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopic study of the high-Tc superconductor class (Sr/Ba)_(1−x)K_xFe_2As_2. By utilizing a photon-energy-modulation contrast and scattering geometry we report the Fermi surface and the momentum dependence of the superconducting gap, Δ(k ). A prominent quasiparticle dispersion kink reflecting strong scattering processes is observed in a binding-energy range of 25–55 meV in the superconducting state, and the coherence length or the extent of the Cooper pair wave function is found to be about 20 A, which is uncharacteristic of a superconducting phase realized by the BCS-phonon-retardation mechanism. The observed 40±15 meV kink likely reflects contributions from the frustrated spin excitations in a J_1-J_2 magnetic background and scattering from the soft phonons. Results taken collectively provide direct clues to the nature of the pairing potential including an internal phase-shift factor in the superconducting order parameter which leads to a Brillouin zone node in a strong-coupling setting.

Abstract:Four directional Compton profiles (CPs) of a hexagonal magnesium single crystal have been measured with high momentum resolution (0.12 a.u.) using 115.6 keV synchrotron radiation in SPring-8. Experimental CP anisotropies were compared with augmented plane waves (APW), Korringa–Kohn–Rostocker (KKR), and the latest density functional theory (DFT) band structure calculations. In order to reconstruct the full three-dimensional valence electron momentum density distribution, maximum entropy method (MEM) was applied. 3D electron momentum densities obtained using MEM were compared (after appropriate integration) with 2D electron momentum density reconstructed using Cormack's method. MEM has proved its advantage as a technique for reconstructing density distributions when initial information is insufficient and noisy. The 3D valence electron momentum density of hexagonal Mg was successfully reconstructed using as few as four experimental or five theoretical Compton profiles. As is shown, despite a clear anisotropy of electron momentum density, our results indicate the nearly-free character of the valence electrons in Mg.

Abstract:The Doppler broadening technique of positron annihilation was used to investigate the electronic structure of the Y-Ba-Cu-O compounds in the range 85-300 K. Anomalous behaviour of the lineshape parameters with a change in temperature was observed, which shows a very distinct difference from the behaviour of superconducting alloys. The results suggest that the mechanism of the new oxide superconductors is different from that in the alloy systems.

Abstract:Using an extension of the Gutzwiller approximation, we calculated the density of states, magnetic moment, and the antiferromagnetic ground-state energy of high-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ copper oxides. The Hubbard Hamiltonian used for the calculations includes hopping between oxygen atoms as well as Cu-O hopping. It is shown that hopping between oxygen atoms is particularly significant for the magnetic properties. The effect of doping, on-site hole repulsion, and charge-transfer energy on the local density of states, magnetic moment of Cu, and antiferromagnetic ground-state energy is studied in detail.

Abstract:The generic band structure of high-T$_C$ copper oxides is simulated by the nearly free-electron model (NFE) in two dimensions (2-D) with parameters from band calculations. Interaction between phonons and spin waves will cause potential modulations and pseudogaps, and the strength of the modulations, the wave lengths and the doping, are all related. A Fermi-surface "arc" is found for dynamic spin/phonon waves. The confinement of superconductivity between two limiting dopings can be a result of competition with the pseudogap at low doping and weak coupling at high doping.

Abstract:High-temperature copper oxide superconductors consist of stacked CuO 2 planes, with electronic band structures and magnetic excitations that are primarily two-dimensional 1 , 2 , but with superconducting coherence that is three-dimensional. This dichotomy highlights the importance of out-of-plane charge dynamics, which has been found to be incoherent in the normal state 3 , 4 within the limited range of momenta accessible by optics. Here we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to explore the charge dynamics across all three dimensions of the Brillouin zone. Polarization analysis of recently discovered collective excitations (modes) in electron-doped copper oxides 5 – 7 reveals their charge origin, that is, without mixing with magnetic components 5 – 7 . The excitations disperse along both the in-plane and out-of-plane directions, revealing its three-dimensional nature. The periodicity of the out-of-plane dispersion corresponds to the distance between neighbouring CuO 2 planes rather than to the crystallographic c -axis lattice constant, suggesting that the interplane Coulomb interaction is responsible for the coherent out-of-plane charge dynamics. The observed properties are hallmarks of the long-sought ‘acoustic plasmon’, which is a branch of distinct charge collective modes predicted for layered systems 8 – 12 and argued to play a substantial part in mediating high-temperature superconductivity 10 – 12 .

Abstract:Using a combination of local density functional theory and cluster exact diagonalization based dynamical mean field theory, we calculate many-body electronic structures of several Mott insulating oxides including undoped high T(c) materials. The dispersions of the lowest occupied electronic states are associated with the Zhang-Rice singlets in cuprates and with doublets, triplets, quadruplets, and quintets in more general cases. Our results agree with angle resolved photoemission experiments including the decrease of the spectral weight of the Zhang-Rice band as it approaches k=0.
Out-of-equilibrium charge redistribution in a copper-oxide based superconductor by time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Abstract:Charge-transfer excitations are of paramount importance for understanding the electronic structure of copper-oxide based high-temperature superconductors. In this study, we investigate the response of a Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{\mathrm{8}+ \delta}$ crystal to the charge redistribution induced by an infrared ultrashort pulse. Element-selective time-resolved core-level photoelectron spectroscopy with a high energy resolution allows disentangling the dynamics of oxygen ions with different coordination and bonds thanks to their different chemical shifts. Our experiment shows that the O\,$1s$ component arising from the Cu-O planes is significantly perturbed by the infrared light pulse. Conversely, the apical oxygen, also coordinated with Sr ions in the Sr-O planes, remains unaffected. This result highlights the peculiar behavior of the electronic structure of the Cu-O planes. It also unlocks the way to study the out-of-equilibrium electronic structure of copper-oxide-based high-temperature superconductors by identifying the O\,$1s$ core-level emission originating from the oxygen ions in the Cu-O planes. This ability could be critical to gain information about the strongly-correlated electron ultrafast dynamical mechanisms in the Cu-O plane in the normal and superconducting phases.
