Abstract:Heart failure (HF) is a clinical syndrome that causes low ventricular pumping and impaired filling function resulting from initial myocardial injury from any source; these effects lead to changes in myocardial structure and function and are the final manifestation of cardiovascular disease and the main cause of death of these patients. [ 1 ] HF affects more than 64 million people worldwide. [ 2 ] HF is characterized by considerable morbidity and mortality; in recent years, mortality has remained high at ≈50% at 5 years. [ 3 ] Importantly, the rapid aging of the population means that the incidence of HF will likely increase further in the coming years. HF is becoming the most important cardiovascular disease in the 21st century. [ 4 , 5 ]
