Abstract:AIM: This paper outlines the current state of Australian practice nursing, describes the context of general practice and establishes the importance of promoting leadership and management in this setting.BACKGROUND: Australian general practice nurses have emerged as key stakeholders in primary health care. However, their role in leadership and management has been largely invisible. The reasons for this are multifactorial, including the delay to establish a strong professional organization, their negative power relationships with general medical practitioners, limited nursing leadership and poorly defined roles. To date, the impetus for practice nurse growth has been largely external to the nursing profession. Growth has been driven by the increasing burden of chronic disease and workforce shortages. This has further weakened the control of nurse leaders over the development of the specialty.CONCLUSIONS: The Australian practice nurse role is at a crossroads. While the practice nurse role is a viable force to improve health outcomes, the growing strength of the practice nurse challenges traditional professional roles and practice patterns.IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: There is an urgent need to develop practice nurse leaders and managers to not only embrace the challenges of Australian general practice from an operational perspective, but also undertake a clinical leadership role. As clinical leaders, these nurses will need to develop a culture that not only optimizes health outcomes but also advances the status of the nursing profession.

Abstract:In the healthcare system, leadership has never been more crucial. Initiatives to improve health care in underdeveloped nations frequently fail, not for lack of clinical and public health understanding, but rather for lack of management ability. However, there are currently few possibilities for thorough leadership development at any level of career. This short communication highlights the success of the International Public Health Management Development Program by the Nepal Medical Association in conjunction with the Indian Embassy in Nepal, financed by the Ministry of External Affairs under the Indian Technical Education Corporation. Abstract:Background: One of the main goals of any organization is to achieve certain success, in fact it is the reason for the existence of any organization. Management provides the framework and basis for the control system required to maintain each organization. Management theorists believe that the knowledge and management skills are universal and apply equally to all business processes. Objective: The aim of this article is to present development of health management through history based on facts from appropriate literature as sources. Methods: The method is systematic review of the facts described in the published scientific papers about general and health management stored in scientific databases PubMed Central, Hinari, Scopus, EBSCO, etc., which are relevant to be used in the praxis. Results and Discussion: Management as a method or management skills traces its roots back to the original creation of the human society. In primary community, a human was performing its duties intuitive, and later taught preceding experience, began to plan and organize work activities to help them to more efficiently perform it. That is why it is claimed that management, as a complex activity, is old as human civilization itself. Health management plays a key role in providing a good health care quality, ultimately improving the health of an entire population. Therefore, it is important to provide good education in management to physicians who aspire to be managers and to lead hospitals, clinics and different health institutions. Management in the health care system is an area of scientific management which in terms of economic, socio-economic and socio-political change, crisis and political change, crisis and extraordinary circumstances requires more attention. The world clearly shows a significant interest in the role of all managers in the health sector and highlights the importance of a good and professional managers to solve problems in the functioning of health institutions and their services. At the same time, in the developed countries, the schools of management flourishing by training the managers in managerial skills. Efficiency refers to doing things in a right manner. Scientifically, it is defined as the output to input ratio and focuses on getting the maximum output with minimum resources. Effectiveness, on the other hand, refers to doing the right things. It constantly measures if the actual output meets the desired output. Therefore, efficiency is generally an internal measure and effectiveness an external measure. Conclusion: Health care services, like any other business, need effective managers. Medical and health service managers are either specialists, supervising a clinical department, or generalists, overseeing an entire facility. All management theory in one way or another were good, but could never be uniform for all organizations. That is why today the new theory is based on the fact that each organization requires specific that and that every requires form of management appropriate for it.
Nurse managers' challenges in project management

Abstract:Aim: To analyse the challenges that nurse managers meet in project management. Background: Project management done by nurse managers has a significant role in the success of projects conducted in work units. Methods: The data were collected by open interviews (n = 14). The participants were nurse managers, nurses and public health nurses. Data analysis was carried out using qualitative content analysis. Results: The three main challenges nurse managers faced in project management in health-care work units were: (1) apathetic organization and management, (2) paralysed work community and (3) cooperation between individuals being discouraged. Conclusions: Nurse managers' challenges in project management can be viewed from the perspective of the following paradoxes: (1) keeping up projects-ensuring patient care, (2) enthusiastic management-effective management of daily work and (3) supporting the work of a multiprofessional team-leadership of individual employees. Implications for nursing management: It is important for nurse managers to learn to relate these paradoxes to one another in a positive way. Further research is needed, focusing on nurse managers' ability to promote workplace spirituality, nurse managers' emotional intelligence and their enthusiasm in small projects.

Abstract:Aims and objectives: To increase knowledge about experienced nurses' understanding of a health-promoting work environment, health-promoting leadership and its role in retention of staff in the nursing workplace. Background: The quality of leadership is imperative in creating supportive and health-promoting work environments to ensure workforce productivity and ethically sustainable caring cultures. More knowledge on how leaders can promote health and sustainable careers among nurses is needed. At a time of current and projected nursing shortage, it is important to understand the reasons why nurses intend to remain in their jobs. Design: Qualitative descriptive. Method: Twelve experienced registered nurses participated in an individual, digitally recorded, semi-structured interview. Data were transcribed verbatim and subjected to qualitative content analysis of manifest and latent content. Results: A health-promoting work environment should provide autonomy, participation in decision-making, skills development and social support. Health-promoting leaders should be attentive and take action. Conclusion: Health-promoting work environments enable nurses to flourish. Having ample autonomy is therefore important to nurses so that when they face new challenges, they see them as a way of using and developing their competencies. Although most nurses claim their own leaders are not health promoting, they have a clear understanding of how a health-promoting leader should act. The health-promoting leader should not only be attentive and promote skills development, but also cater for nurses' meaningfulness. Relevance to clinical practice: Nurses in primary health care understand a health-promoting work environment to be a workplace where they can develop, not only clinical skills, but also flourish as human beings. Further, nurses find it health promoting to have a meaningful job, using their competence to make a difference for patients and their families. Nurse Managers have an important role in facilitating meaningfulness in nurses' jobs to retain nurses as a valuable asset for the organisation.

Effective nurse leadership is important as contemporary challenges of global health management emerge. Development of leadership skills must begin early in the education of undergraduate nurses, as effective leadership skills are crucial throughout all levels of the nursing profession. It is essential that practicing registered nurses role model leadership and support opportunities for undergraduate nurses to develop leadership skills. The association between nurse managers' transformational leadership and quality of patient care: A systematic review

Abstract:Aim: To examine and summarize the reported association of nurse managers' transformational leadership and quality of patient care based on the perceptions of registered nurses. Background: Transformational leadership behaviors of nurse managers result in staff nurses' satisfaction and retention and patient satisfaction. Patient safety and quality of care are vital to high-performing healthcare organizations. Perceptions of registered nurses are important because nurses are frontline healthcare providers fundamental to patient safety and quality of care and are considered the final line of defense in preventing adverse events and errors and improving the safety of patients. Materials and methods: We searched the CINAHL, ProQuest, PubMed, Science Direct, and Web of Science databases for evidence published between 2018 and 2022 in the English language. We adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines in carrying out this meta-analysis. Results: Nine quantitative studies were appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklists and were included in the final review that involved a total sample of 3633 registered nurses. The included studies were reported across Asian, Middle East, and European countries within the past five years. The association between the transformational leadership behaviors of nurse managers and the quality of patient care was found in varying degrees (i.e., insignificant, weak, indirect, and strong direct association) based on the perceptions of registered nurses. Conclusions: There is a direct and indirect association between the transformational leadership behaviors of nurse managers and the quality of patient care internationally. This association is influenced by confounding and mediating factors, including gender, organizational culture, structural empowerment, and job satisfaction. Implications for nursing and health policies: Healthcare organizations need to support nursing leaders to have a stronger transformational leadership style by considering several factors that influence their leadership to improve the quality of patient care their staff nurses provide at the bedside.

Abstract:Within a large integrated health care system that includes local, regional, and national medical centers and offices, quality and patient safety teams, and research institutes, more than 58 000 nurses are employed, with the vast majority providing point-of-care service to patients and members. A small but increasingly important number of nurses are involved in quality improvement and research teams to improve patient care. Within this environment, a number of developments point to a growing need for nursing leadership in systems-level and delivery science policies and research. This article describes a partnership between clinical operations leaders and researchers (nurse scientists) to determine and utilize evidence-based practices to meet a system goal. The first objective of this article is to describe the barriers and potential solutions in combining practice, quality improvement, and research efforts across regions within a large integrated health care system. The second objective is to describe the uniqueness and importance of nurse leaders across interdisciplinary teams to simultaneously pursue research, quality improvement, and operational goals for the organization.

Abstract:AIM: To describe factors facilitating or inhibiting the development of registered nurses' competency and nurse leader's role in knowledge management.BACKGROUND: Nurses' competency directly influences patient safety and the quality and effectiveness of patient care. Challenges of nurse leaders in knowledge management include acquiring, assessing and utilising current knowledge and assessing and enhancing competency.EVALUATION: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS and ERIC databases in April 2015. The search identified 18 relevant research articles published between 2009 and 2015. The quality of the studies was appraised in accordance with study designs.KEY ISSUE: Knowledge management is facilitated by an organisation culture that supports learning, sharing of information and learning together. Leader commitment and competency were factors related to leadership facilitating knowledge management.CONCLUSION: Nurse leaders need evidence-based interventions to support shared learning and to create infrastructures that facilitate competence development. Future research is especially needed to evaluate connections between knowledge management and patient outcomes.IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP: The results of this review can be utilised in enhancing factors to facilitate knowledge management in clinical practice and identifying nurse leaders' role in strengthening nurses' competency.

Abstract:<h3> Aim</h3><p>To establish what leadership competencies are expected of Master level educated nurses like the Advanced Practice Nurses and the Clinical Nurse Leaders as described in the international literature.</p><h3> Background</h3><p>Developments in healthcare ask for well trained nurse leaders. Advanced Practice Nurses and Clinical Nurse Leaders are ideally positioned to lead health care reform in nursing. Nurses should be adequately equipped for this role based on internationally defined leadership competencies. Therefore, identifying leadership competencies and related attributes internationally is needed</p><h3> Design</h3><p>Integrative review.</p><h3> Methods</h3><p>Embase, Medline and CINAHL databases were searched (January 2005 ‐ December 2018). Also, websites of international professional nursing organizations were searched for frameworks on leadership competencies. Study and framework selection, identification of competencies, quality appraisal of included studies and analysis of data were independently conducted by two researchers.</p><h3> Results</h3><p>Fifteen studies and seven competency frameworks were included. Synthesis of 150 identified competencies led to a set of 30 core competencies in the clinical, professional, health systems and health policy leadership domains. Most competencies fitted in one single domain the health policy domain contained the least competencies.</p><h3> Conclusions</h3><p>This synthesis of 30 core competencies within four leadership domains can be used for further development of evidence‐based curricula on leadership. Next steps include further refining of competencies, addressing gaps and the linking of knowledge, skills and attributes.</p><h3> Impact</h3><p>These findings contribute to leadership development for Advanced Practice Nurses and Clinical Nurse Leaders while aiming at improved health service delivery and guiding of health policies and reforms.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:This study explores the practical application of nursing management led by head nurses to enhance team communication and collaboration within clinical settings. By integrating leadership theories with nursing practice, this research adopts a qualitative methodology to examine the effects of strategic communication and teamwork enhancement initiatives. Through interviews, observations, and the analysis of case studies in various hospital departments, the study identifies key barriers to effective team communication and collaboration, including hierarchical structures, lack of standardized communication protocols, and insufficient training. Solutions implemented involve targeted communication skills training, the establishment of interdisciplinary teamwork protocols, and leadership workshops for head nurses. The outcomes indicate significant improvements in team efficiency, patient care quality, and staff satisfaction. This research underscores the importance of head nurses in fostering an environment conducive to open communication and collaborative practice, thereby advancing patient care and team performance.

Abstract:AIM:To explore leadership of Chinese nurse managers in evidence-based nursing implementation.BACKGROUND:Despite much in the literature that highlights the significance of involving nurse managers, the qualitative nature of how their leadership practices influence the evidence implementation has not yet been fully explored.METHODS:A qualitative secondary data analysis was conducted on 15 transcripts of interviews of nurse managers from a parent grounded theory study. The method for analysis employed the directed content analysis approach, using the framework of Kouzes & Posner's Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® model.RESULTS:All the leadership practice categories of Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® were observed in the data. Two additional categories "getting oneself prepared" and "keep it going" were also identified as important leadership practices of nurse managers to exhibit during evidence-based practice implementation.CONCLUSION:This study advances the leadership model by providing validation of existing exemplars and suggests two new practices with exemplars for a better understanding of the nurse managers' role during evidence implementation.IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT:Strategies are proposed to recognise, value and prepare nurse managers' leadership practices during evidence implementation. Emphasis should also be put on cultivating and developing individual nurses' professional practice to sustain evidence-based practice.

Abstract:Healthcare is a complex area with significant potential for service improvement despite the effects of increasing economic and social pressures on the quality and safety of patient care. As the largest group of healthcare professionals in direct contact with patients, nurses are well positioned to contribute to improvements in healthcare services and to the development of new policies. To influence healthcare improvements and policies effectively, nurses require leadership skills. Historically, it was thought that only nurses in management roles required leadership skills; however, the ability to influence change is a requirement at all levels of clinical practice. Transformational leadership competencies provide nurses with the skills to contribute to improvements in the quality and safety of patient care, while enhancing their career satisfaction. This article examines how nurses can apply transformational leadership to their practice. It also informs nurses how to conduct an initial self-assessment of their leadership skills and to formulate a transformational leadership development plan.

Abstract:Aim. Identify the characteristics of leadership competency for the nurse manager and describe the most cited leadership styles in the literature. Background. Leadership is a fundamental competency for nurse managers, as it plays an important role in the healthcare environment to achieve Sustainable Development Goals and promote people‐centered organizations. Therefore, understanding the characteristics of leadership and the leadership style to be employed is important. Methods. A scoping review was conducted from January 2009 to January 2024 using the design of González Garcia et al., the Arksey and O'Malley framework, and databases including Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed. Articles reporting on the characteristics of leadership for nurse managers were reviewed. The authors performed the review based on a search syntax, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the data extraction process. Results. Sixty‐two studies were included in the final review. The review identified 38 characteristics related to leadership competency, among which we highlighted caring for nurses as individuals, being a visionary, knowledgeable, a change agent, and a communicator. This review highlights the prevalence of transformational leadership, which constitutes 69.57% of the leadership styles cited, and underscores its pivotal role in improving the work environment, effectiveness in nursing care, conflict management, team commitment, and adaptability to change within healthcare settings. Conclusions. The most commonly cited characteristics of leadership include caring for the team, effective communication, and a vision for change. Transformational, people‐centered, and motivational leadership is the most appropriate style. Implications for Nursing Management. The characterization of leadership competency will allow the development of training adapted to the current requirements for nursing leaders. This training could be developed in simulation and virtual reality environments. It also allows for a deeper understanding of how leadership competency affects teams and their functioning.

Abstract:Objective: To explore methods and effect of management about degreed critical nursing care. Methods: Nursing managers observed and managed the nursing quality according to the standards of degreed critical nursing care . Results: Quantity of basic nursing, visiting rate of head nurses and results of nursing quality examined by the nursing department was improved a lot after degreed nursing care of critical patients implemented. Conclusion: Management of degreed critical nursing care could improve the nursing quality and arouse nurses’ enthusiasm, make the human resource manage- ment at the base of patients’ need, and utilize the limited nursing resource fully.
