Abstract:With the rapid deployment of new wireless devices and applications, the last decade has witnessed a growing demand for wireless radio spectrum. However, the fixed spectrum assignment policy becomes a bottleneck for more efficient spectrum utilization, under which a great portion of the licensed spectrum is severely under-utilized. The inefficient usage of the limited spectrum resources urges the spectrum regulatory bodies to review their policy and start to seek for innovative communication technology that can exploit the wireless spectrum in a more intelligent and flexible way. The concept of cognitive radio is proposed to address the issue of spectrum efficiency and has been receiving an increasing attention in recent years, since it equips wireless users the capability to optimally adapt their operating parameters according to the interactions with the surrounding radio environment. There have been many significant developments in the past few years on cognitive radios. This paper surveys recent advances in research related to cognitive radios. The fundamentals of cognitive radio technology, architecture of a cognitive radio network and its applications are first introduced. The existing works in spectrum sensing are reviewed, and important issues in dynamic spectrum allocation and sharing are investigated in detail.

Abstract:With the explosion of novel wireless applications,the increasing growth of spectrum requirement has outpaced available spectrum resources.Cognitive Radio Network(CRN) has emerged as a promising solution to address the above dilemma by dynamically sharing spectrum among users.Recently,CRN technology has attracted great research interests as well as efforts.In this paper,we review the state-of-the-art of spectrum allocation techniques in CRNs.We first illustrate the technical background of CRNs,and then analyze the key issues in spectrum allocation algorithms design.Following that we review the design rationale and technical feature of typical allocation models,and further investigate the implementation mechanism of classical algorithms for each model.Finally,we envision the possible issues for future work on spectrum allocation.

Abstract:Cognitive radios (CR) will be able to communicate adaptively in an effort to optimize spectral efficiency. An integral step towards this goal involves obtaining a representative view of the various services operating in a local area. Although it is possible to load different software modules to identify each potential service, such an approach is needlessly inefficient. Instead, rather than use a collection of complete protocols on a CR, we believe that it is essential to have a separate identification module that is capable of reliably identifying services and devices while minimizing the code needed. In particular, by effectively leveraging protocol-specific properties, we show that it is possible to utilize data from narrowband spectral sampling in order to identify broader band services and individual devices. We demonstrate the feasibility of such service and device identification using GNU radio and the universal software radio peripheral (USRP) platform by identifying radio services in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) radio band. Further, we show that physical layer signatures may be used to reliably identify devices, thereby allowing CRs to exploit physical layer information in support of basic authentication functionality.

Abstract:Cognitive radio (CR) is the enabling technology for supporting dynamic spectrum access: the policy that addresses the spectrum scarcity problem that is encountered in many countries. Thus, CR is widely regarded as one of the most promising technologies for future wireless communications. To make radios and wireless networks truly cognitive, however, is by no means a simple task, and it requires collaborative effort from various research communities, including communications theory, networking engineering, signal processing, game theory, software–hardware joint design, and reconfigurable antenna and radio-frequency design. In this paper, we provide a systematic overview on CR networking and communications by looking at the key functions of the physical (PHY), medium access control (MAC), and network layers involved in a CR design and how these layers are crossly related. In particular, for the PHY layer, we will address signal processing techniques for spectrum sensing, cooperative spectrum sensing, and transceiver design for cognitive spectrum access. For the MAC layer, we review sensing scheduling schemes, sensing-access tradeoff design, spectrum-aware access MAC, and CR MAC protocols. In the network layer, cognitive radio network (CRN) tomography, spectrum-aware routing, and quality-of-service (QoS) control will be addressed. Emerging CRNs that are actively developed by various standardization committees and spectrum-sharing economics will also be reviewed. Finally, we point out several open questions and challenges that are related to the CRN design.

Abstract:Cognitive radio is regarded as a promising technology to provide high bandwidth to mobile users via heterogeneous wireless network architectures and dynamic spectrum access techniques. However, cognitive radio networks may also impose some challenges due to various factors such as the ever increasing complexity of network architecture, the high cost of configuring and managing large-scale networks, the fluctuating nature of the available spectrum, diverse QoS requirements of various applications, and the intensifying difficulties of centralized control. A plethora of work has been carried out to address the challenges aforementioned by employing cognitive radio functionalities with self-organization features. In this article, variant aspects of self-organization paradigms in cognitive radio networks, including critical functionalities of MAC- and network-layer operations, are surveyed. The main contributions of this survey include introducing the fundamentals of existing cognitive radio and self-organization techniques as well as their current progress, surveying critical cognitive radio issues (including common control channel management, cooperative spectrum sensing, bioinspired spectrum sharing, network scalability and adaptive routing) as well as their self-organization features, and identifying new directions and open problems in cognitive radio networks.

Abstract:Due to the under-utilization problem of the allocated radio spectrum, cognitive radio (CR) communications have recently emerged as a reliable and effective solution. Among various network models, this survey paper focuses on the enabling techniques for interweave CR networks which have received great attention from standards perspective due to its reliability to achieve the required quality-of-service. Spectrum sensing provides the essential information to enable this interweave communications in which primary and secondary users are not allowed to access the medium concurrently. Several researchers have already considered various aspects to realize efficient techniques for spectrum sensing. In this direction, this survey paper provides a detailed review of the state-of-the-art related to the application of spectrum sensing in CR communications. Starting with the basic principles and the main features of interweave communications, this paper provides a classification of the main approaches based on the radio parameters. Subsequently, we review the existing spectrum sensing works applied to different categories such as narrowband sensing, narrowband spectrum monitoring, wideband sensing, cooperative sensing, practical implementation considerations for various techniques, and the recent standards that rely on the interweave network model. Furthermore, we present the latest advances related to the implementation of the legacy spectrum sensing approaches. Finally, we conclude this survey paper with some suggested open research challenges and future directions for the CR networks in next generation Internet-of-Things applications.

Abstract:Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) have emerged as a promising solution to enhance spectrum utilization by using unused or less used spectrum in radio environments. The basic idea of CRNs is to allow secondary users (SUs) access to licensed spectrum, under the condition that the interference perceived by the primary users (PUs) is minimal. In CRNs, the channel availability is uncertainty due to the existence of PUs, resulting in intermittent communication. Transmission control protocol (TCP) performance may significantly degrade in such conditions. To address the challenges, some transport protocols have been proposed for reliable transmission in CRNs. In this paper we survey the state-of-the-art transport protocols for CRNs. We firstly highlight the unique aspects of CRNs, and describe the challenges of transport protocols in terms of PU behavior, spectrum sensing, spectrum changing and TCP mechanism itself over CRNs. Then, we provide a summary and comparison of existing transport protocols for CRNs. Finally, we discuss several open issues and research challenges. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first survey on transport protocols for CRNs.

Abstract:A cognitive radio (CR) is a transceiver that is aware, adaptive, and capable of learning. It may be visualized and realized as an intelligent software package (cognitive engine) controlling a software defined radio platform. The cognitive engine executes a set of nested loops constituting a cognition cycle, drawing on experience and stored knowledge to optimize a set of user‐chosen quality of service measures. The process relies on the effectiveness of a set of tools that are individually well known but rarely found together: multi‐objective genetic algorithms, case‐based decision theory, and neural networks. Practical implementation problems include passing environmental information from the radio to the cognitive engine, acting on that information, and performing real‐time control of the radio platform by the cognitive engine. In this paper, we discuss our approach to developing and implementing a CR. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Finally, this review paper is presented to help new researchers and to make them familiar with concepts of spectrum sensing.

Abstract:Efficient utility of radio spectrum has been a hot topic as the wireless communication spectrum is a precious resource. The past decade has witnessed intensive research in spectrum sharing techniques. Most of the techniques are based on cognitive radio networks (CRNs) because cognitive capabilities are essential for optimizing spectrum efficiency and guaranteeing safe coexistence in the presence of the spectrum uncertainty. However, due to the high complexity of the problem, most research has been limited to theoretical analysis. It is non-trivial to build a simulator that is capable of carrying out a comprehensive experimental study. In this paper, a survey is conducted to provide a big picture of the available simulators in CRNs research. By illustrating their major functionalities, the insight enables researchers to select tools that match their needs. In addition, with a better understanding of the advantages and constraints, this survey aims at providing a guideline for simulator designers who have been trying to meet the requirements from the CRN research community.

Abstract:The spectrum sensing problem has gained new aspects with cognitive radio and opportunistic spectrum access concepts. It is one of the most challenging issues in cognitive radio systems. In this paper, a survey of spectrum sensing methodologies for cognitive radio is presented. Various aspects of spectrum sensing problem are studied from a cognitive radio perspective and multi-dimensional spectrum sensing concept is introduced. Challenges associated with spectrum sensing are given and enabling spectrum sensing methods are reviewed. The paper explains the cooperative sensing concept and its various forms. External sensing algorithms and other alternative sensing methods are discussed. Furthermore, statistical modeling of network traffic and utilization of these models for prediction of primary user behavior is studied. Finally, sensing features of some current wireless standards are given.

Abstract:Cognitive radio (CR)-based Internet of Things (IoT) system is an effective step toward a world of smart technology. Many frameworks have been proposed to build CR-based IoT systems. The CR-based IoT frameworks are the key points on which this survey focuses. Efficient spectrum sensing and sharing are the main functional components of the CR-based IoT. Reviews of recent SS and sharing approaches are presented in this survey. This survey classifies the SS and sharing approaches and discusses the merits and limitations of those approaches. Moreover, this survey discusses the design factors of the CR-based IoT and the criteria by which the proper SS and access approaches are selected. Furthermore, the survey explores the integration of newly emerging technologies with the CR-based IoT systems. Finally, the survey highlights some emerging challenges and concludes with suggesting future research directions and open issues.

Abstract:With the existing Cognitive Radio Networks development, we present a sub-spectrum sensing scheme based on reputation, which takes advantage in energy consumption, security and fairness from spectrum sensing, data fusion and spectrum allocation by classifying users and spectrum bands reasonably. The analysis shows that the sub-spectrum sensing scheme can save energy and defense SSDF attacks effectively.

Abstract:Due to the increasing demand for new wireless services and applications as well as the increasing number of wireless users, the available spectrum is becoming increasingly scarce. As a result, the federal communications commission (FCC) has been investigating new ways to manage the radio frequency resources. Cognitive radio (CR) technology is an innovative radio design philosophy which aims to increase spectrum utilization by exploiting unused and under-utilized spectrum in dynamically changing environments. The basic idea is to let unlicensed users use licensed frequencies, provided they can guarantee minimum interference perceived by the primary licensed users. However, allowing opportunistic use of the wireless spectrum creates new problems such as peaceful coexistence with other wireless technologies as well as understanding the influence of interference that each of these networks can create. In this article, we discuss the key CR operations and principles, and then discuss some of the main challenges and research opportunities that exist in CR-based emerging wireless networks.

Abstract:Cognitive radio is viewed as a novel approach for improving the utilization of a precious natural resource: the radio electromagnetic spectrum. The cognitive radio, built on a software-defined radio, is defined as an intelligent wireless communication system that is aware of its environment and uses the methodology of understanding-by-building to learn from the environment and adapt to statistical variations in the input stimuli, with two primary objectives in mind: /spl middot/ highly reliable communication whenever and wherever needed; /spl middot/ efficient utilization of the radio spectrum. Following the discussion of interference temperature as a new metric for the quantification and management of interference, the paper addresses three fundamental cognitive tasks. 1) Radio-scene analysis. 2) Channel-state estimation and predictive modeling. 3) Transmit-power control and dynamic spectrum management. This work also discusses the emergent behavior of cognitive radio.

Abstract:Cognitive radio (CR) is an enabling technology for numerous new capabilities such as dynamic spectrum access, spectrum markets, and self-organizing networks. To realize this diverse set of applications, CR researchers leverage a variety of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. To help researchers better understand the practical implications of AI to their CR designs, this paper reviews several CR implementations that used the following AI techniques: artificial neural networks (ANNs), metaheuristic algorithms, hidden Markov models (HMMs), rule-based systems, ontology-based systems (OBSs), and case-based systems (CBSs). Factors that influence the choice of AI techniques, such as responsiveness, complexity, security, robustness, and stability, are discussed. To provide readers with a more concrete understanding, these factors are illustrated in an extended discussion of two CR designs.

Abstract:Cognitive radio is widely expected to be the next Big Bang in wireless communications. Spectrum sensing, that is, detecting the presence of the primary users in a licensed spectrum, is a fundamental problem for cognitive radio. As a result, spectrum sensing has reborn as a very active research area in recent years despite its long history. In this paper, spectrum sensing techniques from the optimal likelihood ratio test to energy detection, matched filtering detection, cyclostationary detection, eigenvalue-based sensing, joint space-time sensing, and robust sensing methods are reviewed. Cooperative spectrum sensing with multiple receivers is also discussed. Special attention is paid to sensing methods that need little prior information on the source signal and the propagation channel. Practical challenges such as noise power uncertainty are discussed and possible solutions are provided. Theoretical analysis on the test statistic distribution and threshold setting is also investigated.

Energy Efficiency Analysis of Cooperative Sensing and Sharing in Cognitive Radio Networks.

Abstract:This paper investigates energy consumption problem in cooperative spectrum sensing and sharing in energy-constrained Cognitive Radio Networks (CRN). With the aim of the realization of green energy-saving cognitive communications, we mainly analyze energy efficiency in the process of cooperative sensing and transmission. Robust cooperative sensing technique is presented with the consideration of sensing channel SNR and reporting channel SNR. In addition, the error rates of transmission between cooperative secondary users (SUs) are also taken into account, which are more practical than traditional cooperative sensing analysis. In spectrum sharing process, an analytical expression of transmission energy consumption and an exact closed-form expression of average BER with BPSK and MQAM modulation are derived. Based on the minimization of energy consumption, optimization algorithm is presented in order to obtain the whole average BER performance with the minimum energy consumption. Optimal cooperative SU number sets are also presented under certain transmission distance constraint. Simulation results confirm our derivation. It is indicated that the analysis of cooperative sensing and sharing provides a significant way for energy saving in CRN.

Abstract:Cognitive radio innovation could be able to alleviate the limitation of accessible radio spectrum by facilitating dynamic spectrum access. Analysts have indeed been focusing on empowering this innovative idea in dealing with the wireless spectrum since its presentation. As a result, rapid progress has been made in this sector of exploration. Reviews and instructional exercise papers are absolutely necessary to keep analysts up to speed with these advancements. As a result, we wanted to take a deeper look at the most emerging technologies in sensing of spectrum, from their origins to their present state and history, in this research. We also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both wideband and narrowband sensing of spectrum techniques, including the implementation challenges. The primary genuine usage of cognitive radio is also discussed in this study as television blank zones. Finally, but certainly not least, we examine at anticipated assessment directions. This study paper was written to help young scientists in the area understand the fundamentals of compressive sensing, spectrum sensing, and artificial intelligence (AI), which are all inspiring for future research and application, as well as to assist analysts in promoting the usefulness of spectrum sensing.

Abstract:In order to meet the growing needs for wireless communication in dynamic and diverse circumstances, Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) have evolved as a transformational model. The important area of intelligent routing in CRNs is examined in this review, along with the potential, problems, and developments that have shaped this emerging discipline. A close study is done on spectrum-aware routing, machine learning-based methods, game theory-inspired strategies, and bio-inspired processes to show how they help solve problems like changing spectrum access, security issues, and the need to efficiently distribute resources. The ever-changing nature of radio settings presents both possibilities and difficulties for innovation in the fields of signal processing, machine learning, and protocol design. The main conclusions of the study highlight how important intelligent routing is to changing how CRNs operate in the future. In the face of dynamic situations, it offers improved resilience, adaptation, and spectrum efficiency. Security innovations, human-centered strategies via intelligent interfaces, and fusion with cutting-edge technology like blockchain and machine learning all reveal novel perspectives on CRNs. With far-reaching ramifications, intelligent routing is positioned as a keystone for reimagining the potential of wireless communication. Future navigation offers a paradigm shift as cutting-edge technology and intelligent routing algorithms combine, opening up previously unimaginable possibilities in the constantly changing field of wireless communication. This study acts as a compass, pointing practitioners and academics in the direction of intelligent routing's revolutionary potential in the development of CRNs.
