Abstract:Exploring an effective way to convert biomass waste into highly active oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts will not only benefit alleviating environmental management pressure, but also open up new ways for the development of alternatives to Pt-based catalysts. Although the traditional pyrolysis conversion method has been proved to be stable and feasible, the low electrocatalytic activity of the product and the cumbersome post-treatment process make it difficult to be popularized. Here, we report an effective method to overcome the mentioned drawbacks: the introduction of g-C3N4. The experimental results confirm that g-C3N4 can be used as a multifunctional template for adjusting the morphology and providing N source. More importantly, it will decompose at 700 degrees C and avoid post-treatment of residues. The pyrolysis products assisted by g-C3N4 exhibit similar ORR performances to commercial Pt/C, including onset potential of 0.963 V (vs. RHE), half-wave potential of 0.835 V (vs. RHE) and limiting current density of 6.35 mA . cm(-2). Impressively, the product displayed outstanding performance on output power density (107 mW . cm(-2)) and discharge performance at different current densities as the air electrode of zinc-air battery, which even superior to that of commercial Pt/C. This study elucidated the functional role of g-C3N4 in reaction system and facilitated the development of more efficient biomass waste-based ORR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) draws an extensive attention in many applications, and there is a growing interest to develop effective ORR electrocatalysts. Iron carbide (Fe3C) is a promising alternative to noble metals (e.g., platinum), but its performances need further improvement, and the real role of the Fe3C phase remains unclear. In this study, we synthesize Fe3C/tungsten carbide/graphitic carbon (Fe3C/WC/GC) nanocomposites, with waste biomass (i.e., pomelo peel) serving as carbon source, using a facile, one-step carbon thermal-reduction method. The nanocomposite is characterized by a porous structure consisting of uniform Fe3C nanoparticles encased by graphitic carbon (GC) layers with highly dispersed nanosized WC. The Fe3C provides the active sites for ORR, while the graphitic layers and WC nanoparticles can stibilize the Fe3C surface, preventing it from dissociation in the electrolyte. The Fe3C/WC/GC nanocomposite is highly active, selective, and stable toward four-electron ORR in pH-neutral electrolyte, which results in a 67.82% higher power density than that of commercial Pt/C and negligible voltage decay during a long-term phase of a 33 cycle (2200 h) operation of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest high activity for splitting oxygen on the surface of Fe3C.

Abstract:Fuel cells are an important and promising energy system which has attracted lots of attention. The research on non precious metal catalysts is extremely important for the development of fuel cells. In this work, we fabricated metal organic hybrids (MOH) from chitosan, phytic acid, and CoCl 2 through a simple chemical method , and further obtained the Co, N, and P co-doped 3D porous carbon material, with the Co atoms exhibiting good monodispersity on the surface. Due to the size effect brought by the single atom doping of Co and the influence of N and P doping on the microenvironment of the active center, the obtained Co-NPC-6 M exhibits excellent catalytic performance for ORR in the alkaline aqueous electrolyte solution.

Abstract:Developing superior efficient and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is critical for high-performance fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Herein, we successfully prepared a 3D, high-level nitrogen-doped, metal-free (N–pC) electrocatalyst employing urea as a single nitrogen source, NaCl as a fully sealed nanoreactor and gingko shells, a biomass waste, as carbon precursor. Due to the high content of active nitrogen groups, large surface area (1133.8 m2 g−1), and 3D hierarchical porous network structure, the as-prepared N–pC has better ORR electrocatalytic performance than the commercial Pt/C and most metal-free carbon materials in alkaline media. Additionally, when N–pC was used as a catalyst for an air electrode, the Zn–air battery (ZAB) had higher peak power density (223 mW cm−2), larger specific-capacity (755 mAh g−1) and better rate-capability than the commercial Pt/C-based one, displaying a good application prospect in metal-air batteries.

Abstract:The fabrication of cost effective and efficient electrocatalysts with functional building blocks to replace noble metal ones is of great importance for energy related applications yet remains a great challenge. Herein, we report the fabrication of a hierarchical structure containing CNTs/graphene/transition-metal hybrids (h-NCNTs/Gr/TM) with excellent bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activity. The synthesis was rationally designed by the growth of shorter nitrogen-doped CNTs (S-NCNTs) on longer NCNTs arrays (L-NCNTs), while graphene layers were in situ generated at their interconnecting sites. The hybrid material shows excellent OER and ORR performance, and was also demonstrated to be a highly active bifunctional catalyst for Zn-air batteries, which could be due to rapid electron transport and full exposure of active sites in the hierarchical structure.

Abstract:In order to enhance the corrosion resistance of carbon supported electrocatalyst under harsh operating conditions for Zn-air battery, a new type of 3D porous graphitic carbon catalysts are developed through catalytic graphitization of biomass waste combing with metal and nitrogen introduction. The obtained catalyst exhibits outstanding ORR (oxygen reduction reaction) performance by exhibiting same half-wave potential than that of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C in alkaline condition and higher current density, better stability, and better methanol tolerance. When assembled for rechargeable Zn-air batteries, the samples show a power density as high as 154 mW cm−2 with an excellent cycling stability greater than 90 h/270 cycles. A series of control experiments provide a new insight into the coupling role of porosity and the degree of graphitization in ORR catalytic process, that is, the balance of graphitization and porosity contributes to both high activity and good stability.

Abstract:Converting hierarchical biomass structure into cutting-edge architecture of electrocatalysts can effectively relieve the extreme dependency of nonrenewable fossil-fuel-resources typically suffering from low cost-effectiveness, scarce supplies, and adverse environmental impacts. A cost-effective cobalt-coordinated nanocellulose (CNF) strategy is reported for realizing a high-performance 2e-ORR electrocatalysts through molecular engineering of hybrid ZIFs-CNF architecture. By a coordination and pyrolysis process, it generates substantial oxygen-capturing active sites within the typically oxygen-insulating cellulose, promoting O2 mass and electron transfer efficiency along the nanostructured Co3O4 anchored with CNF-based biochar. The Co-CNF electrocatalyst exhibits an exceptional H2O2 electrosynthesis efficiency of ≈510.58 mg L-1 cm-2 h-1 with an exceptional superiority over the existing biochar-, or fossil-fuel-derived electrocatalysts. The combination of the electrocatalysts with stainless steel mesh serving as a dual cathode can strongly decompose regular organic pollutants (up to 99.43% removal efficiency by 30 min), showing to be a desirable approach for clean environmental remediation with sustainability, ecological safety, and high-performance.

Abstract:Catalysts composed of isolated single Fe atoms coordinated to graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) dispersed on hierarchical porous N-doped carbon polyhedra (Fe-g-C3N4/HPNCPs) were successfully prepared. The optimized catalyst, Fe-g-C3N4/HPNCP-0.8, showed excellent electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction under alkaline conditions with a half-wave potential of 0.902 V, significantly outperforming commercial Pt/C, as well as high durability. The high performance stems from the synergistic effect of the atomically dispersed Fe-N2 sites and the advantages of the hierarchical porous structure for promoting mass transport and improving the accessibility of the active sites.

Abstract:The design and fabrication of low-cost catalysts for highly efficient oxygen reduction are of paramount importance for various renewable energy-related technologies, such as fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Herein, we report the synthesis of Fe3N nanoparticle-encapsulated N-doped carbon nanotubes on the surface of a flexible biomass-derived carbon cloth (Fe3N@CNTs/CC) via a simple one-step carbonization process. Taking advantage of its unique structure, Fe3N@CNTs/CC was employed as a self-standing electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and possessed high activity as well as excellent long-term stability and methanol resistance in alkaline media. Remarkably, Fe3N@CNT/CC can directly play the role of both a gas diffusion layer and an electrocatalytic cathode in a zinc–air battery without additional means of catalyst loading, and it displays higher open-circuit voltage, power density, and specific capacity in comparison with a commercial Pt/C catalyst. This work is anticipated to inspire the design of cost-effective, easily prepared, and high-performance air electrodes for advanced electrochemical applications.

Abstract:An ultralong N,S co‐doped carbon nano‐hollow‐sphere chain with encapsulated Co nanoparticles (Co‐CNHSC) is synthesized as a bifunctional catalyst for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by adopting a one‐step pyrolysis method. Benefiting from the electronic structure modulation between metal and nonmetal species, the optimized Co‐CNHSC‐3 exhibits an excellent bifunctional activity for OER and ORR and also shows superior performance for Zn‐air batteries. The development of simple and effective strategies to prepare electrocatalysts, which possess unique and stable structures comprised of metal/nonmetallic atoms for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), is currently an urgent issue. Herein, an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst featured by ultralong N, S‐doped carbon nano‐hollow‐sphere chains about 1300 nm with encapsulated Co nanoparticles (Co‐CNHSCs) is developed. The multifunctional catalytic properties of Co together with the heteroatom‐induced charge redistribution (i.e., modulating the electronic structure of the active site) result in superior catalytic activities toward OER and ORR in alkaline media. The optimized catalyst Co‐CNHSC‐3 displays an outstanding electrocatalytic ability for ORR and OER, a high specific capacity of 1023.6 mAh gZn−1, and excellent reversibility after 80 h at 10 mA cm−2 in a Zn‐air battery system. This work presents a new strategy for the design and synthesis of efficient multifunctional carbon‐based catalysts for energy storage and conversion devices.

Abstract:The recovery of valuable metals from spent Li–ion batteries (LIBs) and their full utilization has become essential to support sustainable development. Herein, we designed an efficient 3D porous Co–N–C catalyst (–4) by combining the Co recovered from spent LIBs with biomass. Results illustrate –4 with the porous lamellar architecture utilizes the multiple channel structure for effective mass transfer and provides plentiful active sites, thus exhibiting great bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activity and stability. According to the data, –4 has the half–wave potential of 0.823 V for oxygen reduction reaction, and an overpotential of 350 mV at 10 mA cm -2 for oxygen evolution reaction. The rechargeable Zn–air batteries assembled with the –4 exhibit excellent power density of 215 mW cm −2 , and long–term stability better than RAZBs of benchmark Pt/C + RuO 2 . This research represents a general method for converting abundant biomass and spent LIBs into high environmentally preferable materials for energy–related applications.

Abstract:In this work, chitosan whiskers (CWs) were first extracted using low-cost and earth-abundant crab shells as materials by a series of chemical processes, and then assembled into chitosan whisker microspheres (CWMs) via a simple photochemical polymerization approach. Subsequently, a cementite (Fe3C) nanocrystal@N-doped graphitic carbon (Fe3C@NGC) nanocomposite was successfully fabricated by high temperature pyrolysis of CWMs adsorbed with ferric acetylacetonate (Fe(acac)3) at 900 °C. It was found that a suitable growth atmosphere generated inside CWMs during high temperature pyrolysis is critically important to form Fe3C nanocrystal cores, concurrently accompanying a structural transformation from chitosan whiskers to mesoporous graphitic carbon shells with natural nitrogen (N) doping properties, resulting in the formation of a core-shell structure Fe3C@NGC nanocomposite. The resulting samples were evaluated as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In comparison with sole N-doped graphitic carbon without Fe3C nanocrystals obtained by direct pyrolysis of chitosan whisker microspheres at 900 °C (CWMs-900), Fe3C@NGC showed significantly improved ORR catalytic activity. The tolerance to fuel cell molecules (e.g., methanol) and the durability of Fe3C@NGC are obviously superior to commercial Pt/C catalysts in alkaline media. The high ORR performance of Fe3C@NGC could be due to its large surface area (313.7 m(2) g(-1)), a synergistic role of Fe3C nanocrystals, N doping in graphitic carbon creating more catalytic active sites, and a porous structure of the nanocomposite facilitating mass transfer to efficiently improve the utilization of these catalytic active sites.
Facile Synthesis of N-Doped Graphene-Like Carbon Nanoflakes as Efficient and Stable Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:A series of N-doped carbon materials (NCs) were synthesized by using biomass citric acid and dicyandiamide as renewable raw materials via a facile one-step pyrolysis method. The characterization of microstructural features shows that the NCs samples are composed of few-layered graphene-like nanoflakes with controlled in situ N doping, which is attributed to the confined pyrolysis of citric acid within the interlayers of the dicyandiamide-derived g-C3N4 with high nitrogen contents. Evidently, the pore volumes of the NCs increased with the increasing content of dicyandiamide in the precursor. Among these samples, the NCs nanoflakes prepared with the citric acid/dicyandiamide mass ratio of 1:6, NC-6, show the highest N content of ~6.2 at%, in which pyridinic and graphitic N groups are predominant. Compared to the commercial Pt/C catalyst, the as-prepared NC-6 exhibits a small negative shift of ~66 mV at the half-wave potential, demonstrating excellent electrocatalytic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction. Moreover, NC-6 also shows better long-term stability and resistance to methanol crossover compared to Pt/C. The efficient and stable performance are attributed to the graphene-like microstructure and high content of pyridinic and graphitic doped nitrogen in the sample, which creates more active sites as well as facilitating charge transfer due to the close four-electron reaction pathway. The superior electrocatalytic activity coupled with the facile synthetic method presents a new pathway to cost-effective electrocatalysts for practical fuel cells or metal-air batteries.

Abstract:Biomass resources offer a diverse array of low-cost feedstocks having interesting functional properties for the manufacture of electrocatalysts for the energy sector. In this study, haemoglobin (Hb), lignin, tannic acid and urea were used to make high surface area N, S-codoped carbon electrodes rich in highly dispersed heme-like (Fe-Nx) sites. By pyrolyzing precursor mixtures containing un-purified Hb, lignin, tannic acid and urea, in appropriate mass ratios, a high surface-area S, N-codoped carbon nanostructured electrocatalyst was obtained. The electrocatalyst had surface pyridinic and pyrrolic species together with highly dispersed N-coordinated Fe sites. The developed FeSN/C electrocatalyst exhibited an ORR onset potential of 0.98 V vs. RHE in 0.1 M KOH, a half-wave potential of 0.87 V and a low Tafel slope of 54 mV/dec. This work encourages the design of biomass-derived electrocatalysts for ORR, in particular showing that haemoglobin in bovine blood is suitable for use as an iron source when making Fe-N-C electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Designing rational transition-metal/carbon composites with highly dispersed and firmly anchored nanoparticles (NPs) to prevent agglomeration and shedding is crucial for realizing excellent electrocatalytic performances. Herein, a biomass pore-confined strategy based on mesoporous willow catkin is explored to obtain uniformly dispersed CoFe NPs in N-doped carbon nanotubes and hollow carbon fibers (CoFe@N-CNTs/HCFs). The resultant catalyst exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic performance, which affords a half-wave potential of 0.86 V (vs. RHE) with a limited current density of 6.0 mA·cm −2 for oxygen reduction reaction and potential of 1.67 V (vs. RHE) at 10 mA·cm −2 in 0.1 M KOH for oxygen evolution reaction. When applied to rechargeable zinc–air batteries, a maximum power density of 340 mW·cm −2 and long-term cyclic durability over 800 h are achieved. Such superior bifunctional electrocatalytic activities are ascribed to the biocarbon matrix with abundant mesopores and unobstructed hollow channels, CoFe NPs with high dispersion and controllable nanoscale and the hybrid composite with optimized electronic structure. This work presents an effective approach for constraining the size and dispersion of NPs in a low-cost biocarbon substrate, offering valuable insights for designing advanced oxygen electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal compounds encapsulated in carbon materials exhibit promising properties as potential oxygen electrocatalysts. Herein, we first report Fe2N@C derived from the biomass bioaccumulation doping method, which offers a new perspective for exploring oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts with low cost and high performance. The Fe2N@NCNTs prepared with our biodoping method display excellent ORR activity with a low half-wave potential (E 1/2) and long-term stability in a broad pH range. More importantly, a zinc–air battery (ZAB) constructed with Fe2N@NCNTs’ catalysts exhibits a high open-circuit voltage (1.53 V), high peak power density (135 mW cm–2), and excellent stability (over 200 h). The significantly improved ORR performance can be attributed to the high N-doping level and its hierarchically porous structure. This work offers a path for the development of ORR catalysts for environmental governance and efficient energy conversion.

Abstract:The exploration and development of efficient and cost-effective oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts for non-metallic biomass have emerged as a crucial avenue for synthesizing diverse carbon nanomaterials. We synthesized a nitrogen and sulfur co-doped porous three-dimensional graphene-like carbon nanosheet. The present study employed Ginkgo biloba leaves as the raw material, and a significant number of nanopores were obtained through pre-carbonization treatment followed by high-temperature activation treatment using KOH, along with acidification to eliminate inorganic minerals. The specific surface area of the carbon material was increased to 2219.64 m2g−1, resulting in enhanced electrocatalytic performance. The results demonstrate that the optimized N, S co-doped carbon material (TKGLC-2) outperforms 20%wt Pt/C in all key electrochemical performance parameters as an ORR catalyst. The exceptional ORR properties, ease of preparation, and large surface area suggest that the findings offer a promising prototype template for designing and constructing reliable biochar derived from biomass for potential electrochemical energy and storage applications. This highlights its feasibility as an ORR electrocatalyst in potential applications such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries.

Designing a Novel C3‐Fe‐N Interface Local Coordination Microenvironment for Efficient Electrocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Architecting a novel C‐Fe‐N electrocatalyst with a single atom electron bridge (C‐Fe‐N SAEBs) using a facile and easy scale‐up fabrication method for alkaline electrocatalytic decomposition of water. The as‐obtained product exhibits excellent performance, which is mainly attributed to the strong coupling effect at the interface owing to the formation of a single atom C3‐Fe‐N local coordination microenvironment at the interface. Developing single‐atomic electrocatalysts (SACs) with high activity and stability for electrocatalytic water‐splitting has been challenging. Moreover, the practical utilization of SACs is still far from meeting the the theoretical prediction. Herein a facile and easy scale‐up fabrication method is proposed for designing a novel carbon‐iron‐nitrogen (C‐Fe‐N) electrocatalyst with a single atom electron bridge (C‐Fe‐N SAEBs), which exhibits lower overpotential and impedance than previously reported electrocatalysts. 0.8‐C‐Fe‐N SAEBs exhibits significant activity and excellent stability in the bi‐functional decomposition of water. The excellent performance of the C‐Fe‐N SAEBs electrocatalyst can be attributed to the strong coupling effect at the interface owing to the formation of a single atom C3‐Fe‐N local coordination microenvironment at the interface, which enhance the exposure of active sites and charge transfer, and reduced the adsorption energy barrier of intermediates. Theoretical calculation and synchrotron radiation analysis are performed to understand the mechanistic insights behind the experimental results. The results reveal that the active C3‐Fe‐N local coordination microenvironment at the interface not only improves water‐splitting behavior but also provides a deeper understanding of local‐interface geometry/electronic structure for improving the electrocatalytic activity. Thus, the proposed electrocatalyst, as well as the mechanistic insights into its properties, presents a significant stride toward practical application.
