Abstract:Flammability of polypropylene / ethylene-propylene-diene copolymer (PP/EPDM) filled with melamine phosphate (MP) and pentaerythritol phosphate (PEPA) was studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94, and cone calorimetry. The thermal degradation of the composites was investigted using thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and real-time Fourier transform infrared spectrum (RT-FTIR), and the mechanical properties of the materials were also studied. It had been found that the PP/EPDM/PEPA/MP composites (PEPM series) showed better flame retardancy than that of the PP/EPDM composites containing MP or PEPA. TG and RT-FTIR Studies indicated that the interaction occurs among MP, PEPA, and PP/EPDM. The incorporation of the flame retardants deteriorated the mechanical properties of the materials. Study on the flammability and thermal degradation of a novel intumescent flame retardant EPDM composite

Abstract:An effective intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system, consisting of microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MCAPP) and pentaerythritol (PER), was developed to improve the fire resistance of EPDM. The flammability of the IFR-EPDM composites was evaluated by limiting oxygen index, UL-94 test and cone calorimeter test. The cone calorimeter results showed that the peak of heat release rate and total heat release of IFR-EPDM composites decreased dramatically compared to that of neat EPDM. The thermal degradation behaviors of EPDM and IFR-EPDM composites were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis and real time Fourier transform infrared spectra. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy was utilized to explore the morphology of the char residues.

Abstract:The effects of different kinds of EPDM (ethylene-propylene diene monomer), fillers, silane, lead compounds, flame retardants and antioxidants on the physical-mechanical properties and electrical properties of EPDM insulation were studied and the main results are presented. The temperature index of the flame resistant EPDM insulation was evaluated as 115°C according to IEC Publication 216 and the cables with insulation of this kind meet all requirements specified in IEC Publication 502 and IEC Publication 332-3. In addition, a flame-resistant wire of this kind passed the VW-1 vertical flammability test for nuclear power station application

Abstract:Flame retardant materials have been widely used in different fields because of their unique physical and chemical properties, such as aerospace and chemical products. However, although the traditional halogen-based flame retardant has shown excellent application performance in the actual application process, there are serious environmental pollution problems after its use. In order to solve the environmental problems caused by halogen flame retardants, different types of environmentally friendly flame retardant materials have been developed, such as ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) flame retardant. As a new type of energy saving and environment friendly rubber, the EPDM has excellent heat resistance, aging resistance, corrosion resistance and insulation performance, and thus it has been widely used in all walks of life. To this end, EPDM has been used to develop different types of flame retardant materials. Abstract:In this work, the ethylene-propylene-diene monomer/polypropylene (EPDM/PP) thermoplastic elastomer filled with intumescent flame retardants (IFR) is fabricated by melting blend. The IFR are constituted with melamine phosphate-pentaerythritol (MP/PER) by compounding and reactive extruding, respectively. The effects of two kinds of MP/PER with different contents on the thermal stability, flame retardancy, and mechanical properties of materials are investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94, cone calorimeter test (CCT), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). FTIR results show that the reactive extruded MP/PER partly generates melamine pyrophosphate (MPP) compared with compound masterbatches. TGA data indicate that the best thermal stability is achieved when the molar ratio of MP/PER reaches 1.8. All the reactive samples show a higher flame retardancy than compound ones. The CCT results also exhibit the same trend as above in heat release and smoke production rate. The EPDM/PP composites filled with 30 and 35% reactive MP/PER exhibit the improved flame retardancy but become stiffer and more brittle. SEM photos display that better dispersion and smaller particle size are obtained for reactive samples.

Abstract:A new microcapsule containing ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as core and shell material was synthesized by in situ polymerization technology. The structure and performance of microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MCAPP) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and water contact angle (WCA). The flame retardation of MCAPP and APP flame retarded epoxy resin (EP) composites were studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test, and cone calorimeter. The results indicated that the microencapsulation of APP with the GMA led to an improvement of the hydrophobicity. Results also revealed that the flame retardancy of the EP/MCAPP composite was better than that of the EP/APP composite at the same additive loading. Moreover, the EP/MCAPP demonstrated better thermal stability, due to the stable char forming by APP and GMA shell and the better dispersion of MCAPP in the EP matrix.

Abstract:The fire retardancy and flame-retardant mechanism of expandable graphite (EG), organic montmorillonite (OMMT), and magnesium hydrate (MH) in ethylene-propylene-diene monomer/chloroprene rubber (EPDM/CR) foams were investigated. The results indicated that the combination of EG and OMMT remarkably improved the fire-retardant property compared to the control samples, and better fireproof performance was achieved when MH was used as the third coretardant unit. The structure of the obtained EPDM/CR/OMMT composites was characterized by X-ray diffraction, and the results showed that the composites had an intercalated nanostructure. The limiting oxygen index, vertical burning test, and cone calorimeter test results showed that the LOI values and UL-94 rating increased while the second peak of the heat release rates (HRR) decreased within the EG/OMMT system. In particular, the second pHRR disappeared when the EG/OMMT/MH system was used as a flame retardant. Moreover, the results of thermogravimetric analysis showed that the combination of EG and OMMT reduced the thermal-degradation rates and mass-loss percentages. Furthermore, observation by scanning electron microscopy revealed that EG and OMMT left over after combustion formed a complete, compact, and rigid charred layer with a mosaic structure of expanded graphite embedded in cortical-honeycomb layers of OMMT. Abstract:In order to meet the demands of the insulation layer in the swiftly advancing aerospace thermal protection system and enhance the ablation resistance of ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) insulation layer, a novel EPDM ablation resistance composite was designed by integrating benzoxazine fine-tuned with octal (propyl glycidyl ether) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (BA-POSS) into the network structure of EPDM. The resulting composite exhibited a more densely cross-linked EPDM/BA-POSS network, consequently augmenting both the mechanical and ablation properties of the EPDM ablation resistance composite. The cross-linking density and tensile strength of EPDM/BA-POSS composite with 18 phr (parts per hundred rubber) BA-POSS increased by 78.4% and 30.7%, respectively, and the linear ablation rate significantly reduced by 47.7%, compared with EPDM composite without BA-POSS. Additionally, the ablation mechanism of EPDM/BA-POSS composites was elucidated through an investigation of the thermo-chemical transformation and analysis of the ablated carbon layer. This study contributes novel insights and methodologies for the future design of lowdensity rocket motor insulation compounds that offer cost efficiency, enhanced functionality, and wider applicability.

Abstract:Microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate with polyurethane resin (PUMAPP) was prepared by in situ polymerization and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The flame retardation of PUMAPP/dipentaerythritol(DPER) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/DPER flame retarded polypropylene (PP)/ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) composites were studied using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test and cone calorimeter. Results demonstrated that the flame retardancy of the PP/EPDM/PUMAPP/DPER composites was better than that of the PP/EPDM/APP/DPER composites at the same additive loading. Real time Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) were used to study the thermal degradation and stability of the PP/EPDM/PUMAPP/DPER composite. The hydrolytic stability of the flame retarded PP/EPDM composites was studied. It was found that the microencapsulation of APP with the PU resin leaded to a decrease in the particle's water solubility. Moreover, the synergistic effect of vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) on the PP/EPDM/PUMAPP/DPER composite was also investigated.
Enhancing the Anti-Migration Performance and Mechanical Properties of EPDM Insulation through Functionalized GO

Abstract:The excessive migration of small molecular plasticizers in solid propellants may lead to debonding and changes in combustion characteristics, affecting the safety of solid rocket motors. Herein, two functionalized graphene oxides (GO) were used to enhance the anti-migration performance of EPDM insulation. GO, 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane-modified GO (AGO) and octadecylamine-modified GO (HGO) were filled into EPDM to fabricate EPDM insulation. The anti-migration properties and migration kinetics of EPDM insulations were studied using immersion tests. Moreover, the mechanical properties, including the tensile properties, crosslink density, hardness, and aging resistance of different EPDM insulations, were also explored. Compared with GO, AGO, and HGO obviously enhanced the anti-migration and mechanical properties of the EPDM insulations. This study shows that the anti-migration performance of EPDM insulation can be enhanced by functionalized GO.

Abstract:Epoxy resin (EP) has been widely used in coatings, adhesives, and composites. However, EP is flammable with severe smoke production. The addition of FR fillers into EP can effectively improve its flame retardancy, but often brings mechanical reduction to EP. In this work, a high‐effective boron‐containing flame retardant ammonium polyphosphate (PBMA‐APP) was synthesized and introduced into EP to improve the fire resistance and the impact toughness. With the addition of 6% PBMA‐APP, the fire performance of EP was significantly improved. The UL‐94 rating was increased to V‐0, the total heat rate (THR) and total smoke production (TSP) were reduced by 30% and 32%, respectively. It was proposed that the synergistic effect among B, N, and P in PBMA‐APP promoted the char formation of EP. The addition of 6% PBMA‐APP into EP caused little effect on tensile strength but increased the impact strength of EP to 11.2 kJ/m2. This work has proposed a possible strategy to develop a high‐efficient flame retardant for thermosetting resins. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:With the increasing emphasis on environmental protection, the development of flame retardants for epoxy resin (EP) has tended to be non-toxic, efficient, multifunctional and systematic. Currently reported flame retardants have been capable of providing flame retardancy, heat resistance and thermal stability to EP. However, many aspects still need to be further improved. This paper reviews the development of EPs in halogen-free flame retardants, focusing on phosphorus flame retardants, carbon-based materials, silicon flame retardants, inorganic nanofillers, and metal-containing compounds. These flame retardants can be used on their own or in combination to achieve the desired results. The effects of these flame retardants on the thermal stability and flame retardancy of EPs were discussed. Despite the great progress on flame retardants for EP in recent years, further improvement of EP is needed to obtain numerous eco-friendly high-performance materials.

Abstract:Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites, Ahead of Print. This work aims to develop a new kind of ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) to be utilized as insulator in electrical cables. This type was incorporated with Al(OH)3, Al2O3, and graphene oxide (GO) to decrease the flammability of the rubber. Al2O3 nanoparticle was synthesized via Sol-Gel route. The produced nano Al2O3 powder was characterized using X-ray diffraction and FTIR absorption. The morphologies were studied using SEM and TEM. The characterization demonstrated that the particle size of the prepared Al2O3 a nano-spheres had an average diameter of 19–30 nm. Gamma radiation affected the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. The incorporated rubber consisted of homogenous nanoparticles. Additionally, the samples flammability was examined utilizing limited oxygen index (L.O.I) and the effect of γ- radiation on the flammability was investigated. The analysis of the obtained values reveals that the additive materials will be incorporated with rubber. Also, the influence of γ- radiation on the mechanical and thermal behavior indicates that a little positive effect accompanied the γ- radiation of the samples. The evaluation of the prepared samples as flame retardant for rubber indicate that the value of L.O.I = 20.5 for native rubber and increased to 27.1 for the composite EPDM/Al(OH)3/2%Al2O3/1% GO. This value candidates this composite to be used as insulator in the electrical cable because the addition of Al component and graphene restricted the spread of the flame and dispersed the smoke.

Abstract:The phosphorus- and nitrogen-containing monomer, acryloxyethyl phenoxy phosphorodiethyl amidate (AEPPA), was synthesized and characterized. Poly(St-co-AEPPA)/α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) nanocomposites with different amounts of α-ZrP were then prepared by in situ radical bulk copolymerization. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results showed that the α-ZrP layers were exfoliated in the polymer matrix. Improvements in thermal stability and char residues of the copolymer and nanocomposites were observed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The incorporation of AEPPA can reduce the flammability of polystyrene (PS). Moreover, further reductions were observed when α-ZrP was added. The reduction in flammability was attributed to a lower maximum mass loss rate and more char residues of the nanocomposites involved in thermal degradation.
Novel Aryl Phosphate for Improving Fire Safety and Mechanical Properties of Epoxy Resins

Abstract:Epoxy resins (EPs) are highly flammable, and traditional flame retardant modifications often lead to a significant reduction in their mechanical performance, limiting their applications in aerospace and electrical and electronic fields. In this study, a novel flame retardant, bis(4-(((diphenylphosphoryl)oxy)methyl)phenyl)phenyl phosphate (DMP), was successfully prepared and introduced into the EP matrix. When the addition of DMP was 9 wt%, the EP/9 wt% DMP thermosets passed the UL-94 V-0 rating, and their LOI was increased from 24.5% of EP to 35.0%. With the introduction of DMP, the phosphoric acid compounds from the decomposition of DMP promoted the dehydration and charring of the EP matrix, and the compact, dense char layer effectively exerted the shielding effect in the condensed phase. Meanwhile, the produced phosphorus-containing radicals played a quenching effect in the gas phase. As a result, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) of EP/9 wt% DMP were reduced by 68.9% and 18.1% compared to pure EP. In addition, the polyaromatic structure of DMP had good compatibility with the EP matrix, and the tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength of EP/9 wt% DMP were enhanced by 116.38%, 17.84% and 59.11% in comparison with that of pure EP. This study is valuable for expanding the application of flame-retardant EP/DMP thermosets in emerging fields.

Abstract:Novel methodology introduced to incorporate peroxide in the rubber matrix led to successful development of peroxide cured EPDM insulation based on precipitated silica, a conventional filler. Effect of Silica Filler on the physical, mechanical, thermal, ablative properties and thermal degradation of such an insulation has been recently published. As an outcome of above study, peroxide cured EPDM insulation with 25 PHR of Silica, has been promulgated as potential low density insulation meeting all the requirements of Large Rocket Motor, while having a density as low as 0.997 g/cm3 and Tg as low as −55°C. Effect of aging on mechanical, thermal properties and thermal degradation behavior of low density peroxide cured EPDM insulation has been studied and the findings have been corroborated by FTIR Spectroscopy and morphological Examination by SEM.

Exploration of the Fire-Retardant Potential of Microencapsulated Ammonium Polyphosphate in Epoxy Vitrimer Containing Dynamic Disulfide Bonds

Abstract:Epoxy vitrimers appear as a promising alternative to common epoxy thermoset composites. Nevertheless, the possibilities of applying these materials are limited due to their high flammability which may cause high fire risks. To date, the flame-retardant epoxy vitrimer systems reported in the literature almost all rely on intrinsic flame retardancy to achieve high fire safety; however, the complex and expensive synthesis process hinders their large-scale application. In this work, disulfide-based epoxy vitrimer (EPV) was fabricated with 4, 4'-dithiodianiline as the curing agent, and microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MFAPP) was employed as a potential additive flame retardant to improve their fire retardancy. As a comparative study, common epoxy (EP) composites were also prepared using 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane as the curing agent. The results showed that the introduction of dynamic disulfide bonds led to a reduction in the initial thermal decomposition temperature of EPV by around 70 °C compared to EP. Moreover, the addition of 7.5 wt.% of MFAPP endowed EP with excellent fire performance: the LOI value was as high as 29.9% and the V-0 rating was achieved in the UL-94 test (3.2 mm). However, under the same loading, although EPV/MFAPP7.5% showed obvious anti-dripping performance, it did not reach any rating in the UL-94 test. The flame-retardant mechanisms in the condensed phase were evaluated using SEM-EDS, XPS, and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the residue of EPV/MFAPP7.5% presented numerous holes during burning, which failed to form a continuous and dense char layer as a physical barrier resulting in relatively poor flame retardancy compared to EP/MFAPP7.5%.

Abstract:<p>Three kinds of inorganic particles, zinc borate (ZB), organic montmorillonite (OMMT), and expanded graphite (EG) as synergistic flame retardants, are incorporated into ethylene‐propylene‐diene monomer/polypropylene (EPDM/PP) composites filled with intumescent flame retardants (IFR). The effect of three synergistic flame retardants on the combustion, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of the EPDM/PP/IFR composites are investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, cone calorimeter test (CCT), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy, mechanical property testing, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The results from LOI, UL‐94, and CCT show that the synergistic effect of IFR with ZB and EG is better than IFR with OMMT in the flame retardant EPDM/PP/IFR composites. The TGA results indicate that the thermal stability and char residues of the composites is improved with the addition of inorganic particles, which is attributed to the formation of dense char layers to isolate heat flow. Abstract:Paraffin, one of the important thermal energy storage materials, possesses various desirable characteristics (e.g. high heat of fusion, variable phase change temperature, self-nucleating, no phase segregation and low cost), but has low thermal stability and is flammable. In the current study, form-stable phase change materials (PCMs) based on EPDM (supported material), paraffin (dispersed phase change material), nano structured magnesium hydroxide (nano-MH) and red phosphorus (RP) with various compositions were prepared. The self-synthesized nano-MH has a kind of lamellar structure with good dispersal as characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The constructional morphology, thermal stability, latent heat and flame retardant properties of as-prepared form-stable PCM blends were evaluated by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and limited oxygen index (LOI) tester, respectively. The SEM and DSC results show that addition of nano-MH and RP has no apparent negative effect on EPDM/paraffin three dimensional netted structures and latent heat. The TGA curves indicate that inducing the nano-MH into the form-stable PCM blends leads to the reinforcement of thermal stability, increasing the amount of char residuals at 700°C thereby improving the flame retarding performance.

Abstract:An intumescent flame retardant system composed of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER) was used for flame retarding ethylene-propylene-diene-modified elastomer (EPDM)/polypropylene (PP) blends. Cerium phosphate (CeP) was synthesized and the effect on flame retardancy and thermal stability of EPDM/PP composites based on intumescent flame retardant (IFR) were studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94, and thermogravimetic analysis (TGA), respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) were used to analyze the morphological structure and the component of the residue chars formed from the EPDM/PP composites, and the mechanical properties of the materials were also studied. The addition of CeP to the EPDM/PP/APP/PER composites gives better flame retardancy than that of EPDM/PP/APP/PER composites. TGA and RT-FTIR studies indicated that an interaction occurs among APP, PER, and EPDM/PP. The incorporation of CeP improved the mechanical properties of the materials.
