Abstract:This virtual special issue of ENERGY features 35 top-notch selected extended papers, which were showcased at the CORFU 2022 9th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management ( https://corfu2022.uest.gr ) in Corfu Island, Greece from June 15th to 18th, 2022. This special issue of Energy focuses on the cutting-edge research on waste-to-energy (WtE) in the circular economy, greenhouse gas reduction, and sustainable waste management systems that generate energy. This editorial paper provides a brief overview of the key methodologies, discoveries, and future horizons within the 35 selected papers. The contributions in this special issue are divided into five categories: 1) biofuels and biopower; 2) municipal waste management; 3) emerging resource utilization techniques; 4) current research of waste-to-energy for circular economy; and 5) advancements in waste-to-energy technologies.

Abstract:Abstract Microplastics, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and other emerging contaminants in wastewater have all caused serious environmental and public health issues. The effectiveness of conventional wastewater treatment techniques to remove these pollutants, such as activated sludge, membrane bioreactors, and coagulation-flocculation, is often insufficient. The difficulties and improvements in treatment technology for eliminating developing contaminants from wastewater are examined in this thorough review study. The review gives a general overview of the most important subcategories of emerging pollutants, the shortcomings of traditional wastewater treatment techniques, and the developments in treatment technologies, including advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), adsorption-based methods, and novel biological treatment approaches. The obstacles mentioned include the need for sustainable and energy-efficient solutions, regulatory and monitoring concerns, and technological and economic hurdles. A number of suggestions are made as a response to these difficulties, such as boosting oversight and regulating procedures, fostering cooperation and information sharing, encouraging industry participation, and supporting research and development. These suggestions may be put into practice in order to reduce the hazards posed by developing contaminants in wastewater and safeguard our water resources and the ecosystem over the long run. The article emphasizes the value of using a multidisciplinary and cooperative approach to solving the problems caused by new contaminants. In order to create original solutions, advance best practices, and build suitable regulatory frameworks, it underlines the necessity for ongoing research, policy development, and stakeholder collaboration. The ultimate goal of this analysis is to provide academics, decision-makers, industry stakeholders, and the general public with a useful resource in their quest to comprehend and resolve the complicated problem of developing contaminants in wastewater.
A Mini-Review of Urban Wastewater Treatment in Greece: History, Development and Future Challenges

Abstract:Although Greece has accomplished wastewater infrastructure construction to a large extent, as 91% of the country’s population is already connected to urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), many problems still need to be faced. These include the limited reuse of treated wastewater and of the surplus sludge (biosolids) produced, the relative higher energy consumption in the existing rather aged WWTPs infrastructure, and the proper management of failing or inadequately designed septic tank/soil absorption systems, still in use in several (mostly rural) areas, lacking sewerage systems. Moreover, the wastewater treatment sector should be examined in the general framework of sustainable environmental development; therefore, Greece’s future challenges in this sector ought to be reconsidered. Thus, the review of Greece’s urban wastewater history, even from the ancient times, up to current developments and trends, will be shortly addressed. This study also notes that the remaining challenges should be analyzed in respect to the country’s specific needs (e.g., interaction with the extensive tourism sector), as well as to the European Union’s relevant framework policies and to the respective international technological trends, aiming to consider the WWTPs not only as sites for the treatment/removal of pollutants to prevent environmental pollution, but also as industrial places where energy is efficiently used (or even produced), resources’ content can be potentially recovered and reused (e.g., nutrients, treated water, biosolids), and environmental sustainability is being practiced overall.

Abstract:This is a special issue dedicated mostly to the best studies on waste management presented at the 17 th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology (CEST) that took place on Rhodes Island, Greece, in September 2019. During this biennial international environmental conference established in 1989, top experts, scientists, entrepreneurs, representatives of public administration and social initiatives present state-of-the-art research on current and emerging environmental issues. CEST is thus a platform where academia and business converge; where academic research, innovative ideas and solutions serve as the basis for providing a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment. The papers presented in the conference involved research conducted between 2018 and early 2019. However, since then, the European Commission has published the European Green Deal communication that sets out policy initiatives aiming to help the European Union (EU) achieve its 2050 climate neutrality goal. With the proposed Green New Deal, the United States of America (USA) is bound to implement a similar path. This is a gigantic pulse that produces waves of strategic planning and legislation that will greatly affect resources management and waste valorisation in the EU, the USA and around the world.

Abstract:The status of treated wastewater reuse as experienced in some Mediterranean Basin countries such as Greece, Israel, Italy and Cyprus is examined. General background information is given for each of these Mediterranean countries, including natural water resources, climatic conditions (temperature, rainfall), generated wastewater, crops cultivated and irrigated with effluent, and related aspects of reuse. The examined parameters include treatment strategies, wastewater reuse standards applied in each country, effluent reuse research in progress in the above target countries related to the treatment technologies, water quality, regulations, economics, public acceptance, risk assessment, benefits, keys for potential success and main constraints. Emphasis has been given to the benefits of treated wastewater reuse in integrated water resources management systems and its role for water cycle management, solving water scarcity issues mainly in arid and semi-arid regions of the Mediterranean basin. The experience presented can be implemented in other water scarce regions around the world.

Abstract:The development of civilization entails a growing demand for consumer goods. A side effect of the production and use of these materials is the production of solid waste and wastewater. Municipal and industrial wastewater usually contain a large amount of various organic compounds and are the main source of pollution of the aquatic environment with these substances. Therefore, the search for effective methods of wastewater and other polluted water treatment is an important element of caring for the natural environment. This Special Issue contains nine peer-review articles presenting research on the determination and removal of environmentally hazardous organic compounds from aqueous samples. The presented articles were categorized into three major fields: new approaches to the degradation of water pollutants, new methods of isolation and determination of the emerging organic contaminants (EOCs), and the occurrence of EOCs in the water environment. These articles present only selected issues from a very wide area, which is the removal of organic pollution in water environment, but can serve as important references for future studies.

The Science of The Total Environment

Abstract:This review focuses on the challenges and advances associated with the treatment and management of microorganic pollutants, encompassing pesticides, industrial chemicals, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the environment. The translocation of these contaminants across multiple media, particularly through atmospheric transport , emphasizes their pervasive nature and the subsequent ecological risks. The urgency to develop cost-effective remediation strategies for emerging organic contaminants is paramount. As such, wastewater-based epidemiology and the increasing concern over estrogenicity are explored. By incorporating conventional and innovative wastewater treatment techniques, this article highlights the integration of environmental management strategies, analytical methodologies, and the importance of renewable energy in waste treatment. The primary objective is to provide a comprehensive perspective on the current scenario, imminent threats, and future directions in mitigating the effects of these pollutants on the environment. Furthermore, the review underscores the need for international collaboration in developing standardized guidelines and policies for monitoring and controlling these microorganic pollutants. It advocates for increased investment in research and development of advanced materials and technologies that can efficiently remove or neutralize these contaminants, thereby safeguarding environmental health and promoting sustainable practice.

Abstract:Water is one of the most emerging substances on earth. All living things, including plants and animals, must have water to survive. Rapid urbanization and industrialization afford several pollutants, and their derivatives, which are discharged into the environment. The source of the pollutants includes domestic agriculture, nutrients, and industrial water, which are highly toxic to living organisms. In the current scenario, environmental laws have become stringent towards health, economy, and reduction of pollution. Hence it has become an essential need for the current environment to protect water from pollutants or need cost-effective strategies to protect water from getting polluting. The convention methods have several disadvantages; however, biological method attracted much more attention in recent years. Abstract:Municipal waste water treatment plants have a fundamental task, which is to rid waste water of toxic and health-threatening organic and inorganic substances, including unwanted microorganisms and other pollutants, with the highest possible efficiency so that the discharged water does not contaminate the natural environment, which happens in the case of imperfect cleaning. Current WWTPs usually have a preliminary, primary, and secondary stage, and in very few cases even a tertiary stage, which no longer guarantees the sufficient removal of pollutants from waste water. This research presents the current situation in different parts of the world concerning the possibility of solving the current situation regarding the tertiary and quaternary stages of this process, especially in small and rural WWTPs serving up to approx. 10,000 equivalent inhabitants, which could ensure the removal of so-called emerging pollutants, including microplastics, and would stop WWTPs being point sources of environmental contamination.

Abstract:Abstract Recent advances in wastewater treatment processes have resulted in high removal efficiencies for various hazardous pollutants. Nevertheless, some technologies are more suitable for targeting specific contaminants than others. We comprehensively reviewed the recent advances in removing hazardous pollutants from industrial wastewater through membrane technologies, adsorption, Fenton-based processes, advanced oxidation processes (AOP), and hybrid systems such as electrically-enhanced membrane bioreactors (eMBRs), and integrated eMBR-adsorption system. Each technology’s key features are compared, and recent modifications to the conventional treatment approaches and limitations of advanced treatment systems are highlighted. The removal of emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals from wastewater is also discussed.

Abstract:Background: Water is a scarce resource and is considered a fundamental pillar of sustainable development. The modern development of society requires more and more drinking water. For this cleaner wastewater, treatments are key factors. Among those that exist, advanced oxidation processes are being researched as one of the sustainable solutions. The main objective of this manuscript is to show the scientific advances in this field. Methods: In this paper, a systematic analysis of all the existing scientific works was carried out to verify the evolution of this line of research. Results: It was observed that the three main countries researching this field are China, Spain, and the USA. Regarding the scientific collaboration between countries, three clusters were detected—one of Spain, one of China and the USA, and one of Italy and France. The publications are grouped around three types of water: industrial, urban, and drinking. Regarding the research, 15 clusters identified from the keywords analyzed the advanced oxidation process (alone or combined with biological oxidation) with the type of wastewater and the target pollutant, removal of which is intended. Finally, the most important scientific communities or clusters detected in terms of the number of published articles were those related to the elimination of pollutants of biological origin, such as bacteria, and of industrial nature, such as pesticides or pharmaceutical products.

Abstract:One of the biggest problems the world is currently experiencing is wastewater treatment. Numerous pollutants are released into water bodies by enormous amounts of effluents from varied sources. This paper provides a concise summary of the state of the art in AOPs, biological treatment, and their efficient application for the degradation of the numerous recalcitrant organic contaminants found in wastewater. The employment of a photoreactor is necessary for the efficient execution of the majority of photocatalytic processes. This review examines the effectiveness of several reactor configurations with varying geometries. Integrating different AOPs and AOPs with biological approaches for degrading pollutants in wastewater was also discussed. It is important to emphasize that an integrated AOP/biological system produces by-products that are not hazardous, uses little energy, and completely degrades pollutants. The review also outlines the challenges and issues of wastewater treatment for an environmentally and economically feasible process.

Abstract:Abstract Water scarcity is one of the major problems in the world and millions of people have no access to freshwater. Untreated wastewater is widely used for agriculture in many countries. This is one of the world-leading serious environmental and public health concerns. Instead of using untreated wastewater, treated wastewater has been found more applicable and ecofriendly option. Moreover, environmental toxicity due to solid waste exposures is also one of the leading health concerns. Therefore, intending to combat the problems associated with the use of untreated wastewater, we propose in this review a multidisciplinary approach to handle wastewater as a potential resource for use in agriculture. We propose a model showing the efficient methods for wastewater treatment and the utilization of solid wastes in fertilizers. The study also points out the associated health concern for farmers, who are working in wastewater-irrigated fields along with the harmful effects of untreated wastewater. The consumption of crop irrigated by wastewater has leading health implications also discussed in this review paper. This review further reveals that our current understanding of the wastewater treatment and use in agriculture with addressing advancements in treatment methods has great future possibilities.
