Abstract:While in our own time Handel's choruses (particularly those in Messiah ) are perhaps his best known vocal music, throughout much of his career it was his arias that generated the most public enthusiasm. Partially owing to the relative neglect of the works in which arias are the most prominent element (the operas and cantatas) in the two centuries following Handel's death, and partially owing to rapidly changing tastes in the genres to which those works belong (both then and now), our appreciation of Handel's aria composition has suffered. Arias are the most important structural element in all of Handel's vocal works, however, and consequently they occupied more of his creative energy than any other form. As a result, Handel's arias provide us with a clear picture of his compositional development and also with insights into his aesthetic aims throughout his career. Certainly part of our neglect of Handel's arias is the result of the fact that the vast majority of them are in da capo form, a form most commonly associated with opera seria . Until quite recently, opera seria as a genre has been relentlessly criticised by both contemporary commentators and modern scholars alike; moreover, quite often the focus of the criticism has been the da capo aria itself. Essentially an expanded ternary form, the grand da capo aria (or five-part da capo, the type most commonly found in Handel's arias) takes the form A1 A2 B (B) A1 A2, in which A1 is the first stanza of text, A2 is a repetition of the first stanza, and B is the second stanza of text.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors analyze the unique vocal characteristics of selected arias from "Triumph of Time and Truth," an oratorio by George Frideric Handel. The material presented is particularly relevant due to the identified performance difficulties that contemporary vocalists may face while studying and performing these arias, as well as the specific methodological recommendations provided to enhance professionalism and quality in performances. The authors provide a thorough analysis of the primary performance challenges, which include breathing, tempo, expression, and overall character.

Abstract:Formulation of the problem. The article is devoted to the characteristics of the image of Sesto from the opera «Julius Caesar» by G. F. Handel, namely, to the specifics of performing dramaturgy. Analysis of recent research and publications. The main studies are those of the aesthetics of the era and the principles of performance in the Baroque period (Harnoncourt, Ivanova, Kukol, Cherkashyna-Gubarenko), the creative work of G. F. Handel (Deshoulières, Hogwood, Knapp & Dean, Sadie, Seidel), the embodiment of his operas on modern stages (Giudici, Jones), and specifics of vocal performance (Kozak). The purpose of the article is to reveal the specifics of the performing dramaturgy of the image of Sesto from the opera «Julius Caesar in Egypt» by G. F. Handel and to follow individual examples of its embodiment in the interpretations of modern performers. The scientific novelty is the first attempt in Ukrainian musicology to research and carry out an analysis of the performing dramaturgy of the image of Sesto from the opera «Julius Caesar in Egypt» by G. F. Handel. The research methodology is based on the achievements of the department of interpretology and analysis of music of the I. P. Kotlyarevsky KhNUA in the perspective of the study of performing poetics, in particular, performing dramaturgy. Thus, the basic definition is the one given in the doctoral monograph by Y. Nikolaievska, who connects this phenomenon with the internal form and points to the very processuality in sonorous time. The results of the study are a detailed analysis of 5 arias and a duet that make up the basis of Sesto’s part, translations of the texts are provided, which allows one to understand the nuances of the role, examples of ranges of musical pieces are given, performing difficulties are analysed. Conclusions. «Performing dramaturgy» is defined as the gradual actualization of the content potentially laid down by the composer in the process of performance (in the development of Y. Nikolaievska’s ideas). The potential semantic markers of the role of Sesto are marked as follows: the emphasized youth of the hero, his connection with almost all the heroes of the opera, the multifacetedness of emotional expression; the presence in his role of arias with affects such as lamento and revenge, bravura arias; the dynamics of the role is built from the first aria, where the suffering young man is presented, to the last aria (act III) – heroic in form and essence. Important means of expression in Sesto’s arias include interval jumps, passages for small technique, long phrases that require mastery of breathing, contrasting dynamic nuances, tessitura, various rhythmic patterns, etc.; convenient keys (c-moll, Es-dur, e-moll, g-moll) and range (from hм to g2 ). The actualization of dramaturgical markers was followed on the examples of interpretations of Sesto’s image by three modern performers (mezzo-soprano Lorraine Gant Lieberson, Isabelle Leonard, countertenor F. Zharusky). It is noted that all performers in general embody the wealth of feelings, emotions, and affects laid down by the composer, demonstrate high technicality, a combination of drama and lyricism, emotionality, determination, and courage.

Abstract:In recent decades singers of Handel’s music have made great strides in recapturing the art of embellishing his music, thus breathing new life into forms such as the da capo aria. Yet Handel’s own “variations”—his development and transformation of musical material in his vocal music, important for understanding his compositional practice with borrowed as well as (presumably) original music—are not yet fully explored or appreciated. Admittedly, scholars have discussed musical procedures such as inserting, deleting, and reordering musical materials, as well as other Baroque combinatorial practices in Handel’s arias, but the musical transformations I discuss here are closer to a specifically Handelian brand of developing variation. To my knowledge, the concept of developing variation has never before been applied to early eighteenth-century music. I explore the relation of developing variation to drama (also rarely done) in two of Handel’s arias, providing a close examination of “Ombre, piante” from the opera Rodelinda and new thoughts about “Lament not thus,” originally intended for the oratorio Belshazzar. Although these arias belong to different genres and different stages of Handel’s career, they both exhibit material that undergoes a kind of progressive variation process that has tangible musical and dramatic ramifications, of interest to opera specialists and performers. Furthermore, both arias have a complicated compositional history; I offer fresh insights into the aesthetic qualities of each version, thereby throwing light on Handel’s possible compositional intentions. This article also discloses for the first time some recurring musical passages shared between “Lament not thus” and other pieces that could influence the listener’s interpretation of certain musico-dramatic gestures.

Abstract:Statement of the problem. Among the questions that arise, let us single out those that will form the basis of the proposed article devoted to women’s parts in the opera “Rodelinda”: HIP traditions and staging strategies; vocal roles and their possible modifications / transformations under the conditions of specific directing and performing solutions. Analysis of recent scientific publications shows that ‘Handeliana’ is currently very voluminous. Thus, the works of W. Dean (1969), J. Knapp (2009) and C. Hogwood (2007), which have been republished several times, are considered thoroughly; L. Silke (2014) summarized the experience of predecessors and presented new dimensions of scientific understanding of Handel’s legacy. Fundamental are the studies by L. Kirillina (2019). The problem of performing vocal music of the Baroque era has been actively discussed in the works of I. Fedoseev (1996), N. Harnoncourt (2002), G. Kaganov (2013), M. Burden (2009), A. Jones (2006), О. Kruglova (2007), G. Konson & I. Konson (2020). The purpose of the article is to single out the main parameters of the baroque performance of women’s parts in G.F. Handel’s opera “Rodelinda” taking into account the performing traditions and modern trends. The research methodology is focused on the concept of “authentic performing strategy” (Yu. Nikolaievska, 2020), positions of comparative interpretology (Ch. Zhiwei, 2012) and interpretative approach, aimed at studying the specifics of the performance versions. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the application of an interpretive approach to the study of G. F. Handel’s operas. Results. In the 1938 recording (conducted by G. Leonhard), Rodelinda was performed by the famous Cecile Reich, in 1959, 1973 – by Joan Sutherland (in London and Netherlands productions). Closer to the authentic versions is the one performed by Sophie Danneman (1996); there is also a famous recording of 2005 with Rene Fleming (Metropolitan Opera), who was brilliant as an actress (which is required by the plot), but she admired and “played” her voice a little, which does not quite correspond to the principles of authenticity. One of the stars of the Glyndebourne Festival (1998) was the performer of Rodelinda’s part – Anna Caterina Antonacci, who performed her part with the necessary psychological and vocal accents, but, perhaps, somewhat dry and removed, which is why the listener is also removed from the heroine’s tragedy. In 2011 N. Harnoncourt recorded “Rodelinda” (in the title role – Danielle de Niese, who owns the entire arsenal of means inherent in baroque performance). Lauren Woods (recording of the 2016) is one of the most famous performers of the baroque repertoire. Critics have noted her perfect articulation, acting ability and “impressive vocals”. Simone Kermes, who critics call “the mad queen of the Baroque”, is distinguished by bright and temperamental performance, especially incomparable in the interpretation of baroque operas. Conclusions. From the interpretive point of view, mastering the expressive system of Baroque vocal performance traditions, in particular the art of vocal improvisation and ornamentation, consistent with the artistic context and directorial decision, can broadcast for the modern listener the affects and meanings of Handel’s music. The established features of baroque style are marked (affect, which is usually concentrated in such positions as tempo-rhythm, tonality, text, syntax of the melody) and performance (timbre, dynamics, intonation of the melodic line, ornamentation). Rodelinda’s part has been shown to require the ability to switch from one affect to another fairly quickly. In the analyzed interpretations, modern singers (D. de Nies, J. Sutherland, S. Kermez, L. Woods, A. K. Antonacci) practically do not allow themselves to be free, but seek to follow the principles of authentic performance, which is manifested in dynamic, agogic elements, various timbre colors arias (aria of revenge, duet-consent, aria of lamento), the ability to improvise.

Abstract:Attending an opera involves a multi-sensory evaluation (acoustical, visual, and more), cultural background and other emotional parameters. The present work aims to investigate the historical development of Italian-style opera houses, from the 16th century until today. Called “Italian” due to their origin, they developed thanks to the mutual influence of the genre and the building characteristics. Furthermore, the acoustics of historical opera houses is now considered as intangible cultural heritage, so it should be known and preserved. The paper addressed the state-of-the-art literature—most of which was proposed in Italian—which can be driven easily by the sharing of historical and contemporary knowledge.

Abstract:It is generally stated without qualification that Fielding was a great admirer of Handel. This is understandable given that his works of the 1740s and 1750s are replete with praise of the composer. Curiously, however, during the 1730s, his compliments to Handel are few and far between. True, in his ballad operas from that period, he borrowed a number of the composer's melodies, but in multiple instances, he attached comic lyrics that mocked their seriousness. This paper contends that Fielding's apparent change in attitude in the 1740s was rooted in Handel's own change as he moved away from Italian opera and toward English oratorio. While Fielding was critical of the former, the latter genre aligned with his aesthetic ideal, which favored word-centric music performed in English with a minimum of “Tinsel, or . . . Ostentation.” Indeed, it is arguable that in his ballad-opera adaptations of Handel, which he often assigned to performers whom Handel also employed, Fielding was prefiguring on a lesser scale what would later make Handel his ideal of all an English composer should be.

Abstract:This chapter makes a case for the interpretive significance of Baroque topics by examining historical thought and modern analytical precedent, detailing the types of significations these topics might convey, and presenting case studies that demonstrate the efficacy of musical topics in the analysis of opera seria . These case studies are drawn from the Italian-language operas of G. F. Handel and focus on his uses of the minuet and the gigue. The strategic use of dance topics in the late Baroque was likely meaningful to Handel’s audiences and can still be useful for interpretation today.

Abstract:The article considers the functional role of the cello in the vocal-instrumental musical works of the Baroque period and attempts to shift the problem from the practical-performing background into the field of professional musicological discourse. Two Italian solo cantatas by G. F. Handel were chosen for analysis, in which the composer clearly structured and used instrumental accompaniment according to the stylistic norms of the instrumental and vocal ensemble of the 17th–18th centuries — as a dialogue of two voices accompanied by others. Emphasis is placed on the differences between the basso continuo and obliggato parts, which reveal the main directions of the functional purpose of the instrument and prove the importance of the cello in the ensemble performance of the Baroque period. It is revealed that the problem of manifestation of performing individuality and interpretation of Baroque works in the concert practice of today is the subject of a separate musicological study and requires more detailed research. In this discourse, Baroque musical literature is a vast field for research, rightly playing a dominant role in contemporary performing arts.

Abstract:The highest form of vocal singing and performance is opera. The opera is mainly a form of comprehensive drama that combines music, poetry, art, dance, instrumental music and other artistic forms. It was born in Italy, the hometown of opera, and later introduced to China. With the spread of Western opera, Chinese opera art absorbed a lot of characteristics of Western opera. By the beginning of the 20th century, Chinese folk opera was born, and it formed many different kinds under the influence of social environment, personal experience and development of vocal technology, singing style. The Chinese folk opera vocal music began with the simple and natural style of “song-song-song-song”, and gradually integrated with the traditional opera singing method. On this basis, it continued to absorb the advantages of national singing. Nowadays, in the process of development and prosperity of Chinese national operas, the characteristics of western melody singing into science gradually become perfect, mature and develop in the direction of “beautiful voice”. This article will focus on the trend of “beauty” in Chinese folk opera vocal music. First of all, it introduces the development history of Chinese national opera and vocal music; then, it analyzes the characteristics of Western American vocal singing; finally, it expounds the benefits of Bel Canto in Chinese national opera. Chinese national operas reflect the nationalization of the story, the nationalization of the characters, the nationalization of artistic style, the nationalization of instrumental music, and the nationalization of music creation.

Abstract:The purpose of the article is to trail regularities of vocal evolution which has formed the transition of stage operatic development from Rossini to Verdi and which has predetermined the performing tradition of Lucia‘s role in Donizetti’s opera “Lucia Lammermoor “(1835) by light coloratura soprano in the second half of XIX century until the present day. The methodology of the study is based on the intonation approach to interaction of music and spoken word in B. Asafiev”s school in Ukraine and which corresponds to the trend of hermeneutics research of the musicology study, as offered in works of L. Zima, E. Markova, A. Roshchenko. The scientific novelty of the work is determined by originality of historical approach to vocal intonation change which has been given birth by Italian romanticism in its dissociation from the R. Wagner approach and which has been accepted as leading approach in operatic performing tradition. This concept coincides with the author's independent analysis of the main heroine in Donizetti’s opera. Conclusion. The role of Lucia in Donizetti‘s opera with its particular style of libretto and manifestation of both femininity and outstanding power resulting in madness forms the parallel to preceding operatic images of hers as well as contemporary images in the days of Donizetti. The composer’s approach to F. Takkinardi-Persiani’s interpretation of this role, however, points to a presentiment of the replacement of "Rossini" soprano by lyrical coloratura in the operas of Gounod. Still this replacement drove the performing of the dramatic role of Lucia by "light" coloratura sopranos - from A. Patti to A. Galli-Kurci, from A. Nezhdanova to E. Miroshnichenko and last not least author of the essay in reference. It is sincerity and faithfulness to the beloved one rather than power of nature which determine the core values of Lucia, forming an analogy to heroines in psychodramas of V. Rebikov, whose genius as a treasure of the Ukraine South became a discovery at the musical theater nowadays. As a consequence ” Lucia di Lammermoor” continuously occupies a significant place in the repertoire of Ukrainian opera houses.

Abstract:The article analyzes the musical material of the two arias of Anna – as the key characteristics of her image in the opera Y. Meytus “Stolen Happiness” (based on the experience of analysis, since the arias are in the work and repertoire of the author of the study). Consideration of the image from the point of view of performance and interpretation of the understanding of the interactions of words and music, the composer logic of emotional experiences, taking into account a complex of components such as the nature of the musical fabric and the historical aspect, is proposed. operas. Statement of the problem. The creativity of Y. Meytus as a composer, who stood at the origins of the formation of the Ukrainian composing school of the twentieth century, is still relevant and, in particular, his rarely performed opera «Stolen Happiness», which in the true opinion of Y. Malyshev, is a «significant contribution» in the development of realistic opera art. There are still an undeserved number of records of this opera, and accordingly a small number of variants of interpretations of images, semantic texts and subtexts, and this work in this sense is of practical importance from the performer’s point of view. Since Anna’s arias are in the work and repertoire of the author of the study, the relevance of this topic is also related to the direct presentation of this music on stage. The purpose of the study –to determine the specificity of the interpretation of the image of Anna from the opera “Stolen Happiness” by Y. Maytus. Analysis of publications on the topic of the study. Regarding the works of Y. Meytus, there are researches and publications by Y. Malyshev, L. Archimovich, I. Mamchur, L. Bas, where the composer’s creativity is covered. There are few sources for the opera «Stolen Happiness», and there is no comprehensive and in-depth interpretative performance analysis.Presentation of the main research material. Widely utilizing the opera-harmonic basis of the features of Western Ukrainian folklore in the opera «Stolen Happiness», Y. Meytus emphasizes the national identity and color of the characters, including the main heroine, by means of the symphonic development of the musical material creates a dramatically and intelligently developed development of the multifaceted and multifaceted. The task of vocal performance is to consciously read the “score of feelings” of the performed character, which is contained primarily in the musical texture, which much and fully conveys the dynamics of character image development. The vocal part, the melody, being a part of harmony, is the condensate, the quintessence of the harmonious thought of the composer, which demands from the performer imagination, intuition, attention, sensory perception, emotional sensitivity. Conclusions of the study. Having performed a performative analysis of the image of Anna in the opera «Stolen Happiness» by Y. Meytus. 1. Because, first and foremost, it is an aria-melodic musical drama, close in style to verisim (the melody in Y. Meytus does not lose the properties of the length and cantilenes) therefore performance requires good long vocal breathing, cantilever, legato, flexibility of voice and timbral equality with simultaneous force of sound in climaxes, long thought of phrases, fullness of each vowel, clear diction, that is, awareness of the relationship between words and music, the smoothness of the language line. Good intonation hearing and good coordination of vocal apparatus are required not only from the point of view of breathing, but also from the point of view of difficult intonational musical language. 2. Performing arias requires from the singer a deep emotional responsiveness, great mental strength and physical endurance, as well as an actor’s understanding of the image-role. This image does not tolerate excessive passion for expressiveness, unnecessary emotions and hysterics, it will penetrate the depth of the tragedy of the heroine. The nuances from pianissimo, not transient to whispering, but voiced, to the filled fortissimo, not transitional to cry. The choice of tempo, especially given their frequent change, should be consistent with the natural sound of the vocal language. 3. The texture of the music material determines the role of the voice. The party is suitable for a solid lyric, lyric-dramatic (spinto) or dramatic soprano, that is, for voice, has the flight to “cut through” the orchestra and be sounded part of its rich texture.

Abstract:The purpose of the research. The study reveals the specific features of the serenata as a musical-dramatic work “on occasion” and its historical path. The methodology is based on a combination of a historical-cultural approach and an analytical method, which made it possible to show the serenata genre in its historical dynamics and to clarify the features of the libretto and music. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that for the first time the serenata was characterised as a musical-dramatic work “on occasion”, which existed in the European cultural space from the middle of the 17th to the end of the 18th century, in genre categories and the main milestones of its historical path were highlighted. Conclusions. The history of serenata begins in the middle of the 17th century and ends at the turn of the 18th – 19th centuries. Leading composers of the Baroque era (G. B. Bononcini, A. Vivaldi, A. Scarlatti, A. Stradella) and classicism (K. W. Gluck, J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart, and others) turned to this genre. In manuscripts, musical-theatrical works “on occasion” of the 17th–18th centuries had different names, but the most semantically loaded is the serenata. Serenata has many similarities with cantata and opera, but its specificity allows us to consider serenata as a separate genre. The genre-creative features of the serenata are writing “on occasion”; allegorical libretto as a tool for glorifying the customer; the final recitative or a separately written part (“licenza”), which contains the glorification of the addressee; performance in a private “closed” space; plot, but without developed dramatic action; use of scenery and costumes; expanded, in contrast to the cantata, structure and performing composition. Abstract:Abstract: The development of Chinese opera art, in modern times, has greatly changed with the times. Explaining the essence of Chinese opera and vocal music art from the Western modern hermeneutics and reception aesthetics theory is conducive to sorting out the development context and characteristics of Chinese opera in different times. At the same time, providing a systematic analysis method for modern opera and vocal music aesthetics promotes the aesthetic development of the art and contributes to the form innovation and technical refinement of domestic opera and vocal music art. The research starts with the theoretical analysis of hermeneutics and reception aesthetics and verifies and explores the development history of Chinese opera. The analysis of the artistic essence of opera and vocal music will be summarized mainly from the perspective of the object of the opera text and the subject of the aesthetic audience. The purpose of this research is to explain the essential characteristics of opera and vocal music art from the relationship between the subject and the object. Besides, it aims to examine the relationship between the understanding behavior of the masses and the creators and performers’ summary behavior for opera and vocal music art.
On Art Characteristics of Italy Verismo Opera in the Latter Part of the 19th Century

Abstract:With its distinctive verisimilitude and vigor,verismo operas made the audience a pleasant change of atmosphere.It became an opera attracting public attention on the Italian opera stage in the 19th century.Verismo operas make vivid and earthy reproductions of the small figures living in the bottom of society.Stories are always well-paced with exciting plots and acute contradictions.As for music forms,many new musical and artistic methods are applied for either an aria that composes characters,an ensemble that reinforces dramatic plot,or an intermezzo or instrumental accompaniment that gives atmosphere.Compared with music in the Romantic period the music in verismo operas is full of strong sensation and expresses the writer's feelings and it is truer and simpler.Therefore,verismo operas occupy an important place in European opera history.

Abstract:In line with the interest of domestic researchers in libretto of vintage operas and Baroque music theatre, this article turns over a new leaf of the G.F. Handel’s operas of his early period, and also puts them into the context of the performance traditions of the Hamburg State Opera at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. Der beglückte Florindo (“Florindo made happy”) and Die verwandelte Daphne (“Daphne metamorphosed”) are the operas, which were performed on the stage of the Hamburg Theatre at the Gänsemarkt square (lit. Geese Market) and became not only the first G.F. Handel’s try on the genre of pastorals, but also a prime example of a Baroque opera dilogy. As the composer’s music sheets have been almost completely lost, the author is focused on the preserved texts of the libretto and sets an objective to identify their specificity in the context of plot formation of a Baroque opera. This article makes an attempt to analyze Handel’s opera dilogy in fine detail. Thus, the author reveals the underlying dramatic conflict between two gods – Phoebus and Cupid, determines the number of pairs of characters involved in the love dramaturgical line and provides schemes depicting their relationships. In addition, there are enlisted key plot motifs such as mutual/unrequited love motif, motif of suffering, death motif, hatred motif, revenge motif and guile motifs. The identification of the role of each of these motifs in the plot contributes to the confirmation of the hypothesis that Handel’s dilogy belongs to the traditional samples of the early 18th century operatic texts, which are distinguished by the complex intrigue, the intricate love relationships of characters, the typical plot and situational schemes
