Abstract:In this work, we aim to deliver a comprehensive review of the past and current fabrication and subsequent structural characterization of single crystals of established semiconducting polymers and oligomers while maintaining extra emphasis on the crystals' resulting optoelectronic properties, including charge carrier mobility, conductivity, photovoltaic capability, and the ability to absorb light.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to comprehensively review the established preparation of semiconductor polymer single crystals and their subsequent structural characterization, with a particular emphasis on the optoelectronic properties of these single crystals, including carrier mobility, conductivity, photovoltaic capability, and light absorption ability. Specifically, the paper focuses on the internal structure and corresponding optoelectronic properties of semiconductor polymer single crystals generated through crystallization processes such as nucleation and growth, and further emphasizes the use of these single crystals in practical applications. The main focus of the paper is on the preparation and characterization of polythiophene-based single crystals, particularly the study of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). Through different preparation methods, such as self-nucleation techniques and solvent annealing, researchers are able to obtain high-quality P3HT single crystals with various morphologies (e.g., microwires, needle-like, fibrous). These single crystals exhibit excellent order and optoelectronic properties, providing model systems for understanding the fundamental properties of semiconductor polymer materials.
