Abstract:Let $G/H$ be a homogeneous space of reductive type with non-compact $H$. The study of deformations of discontinuous groups for $G/H$ was initiated by T.~Kobayashi. In this paper, we show that a standard discontinuous group $\Gamma$ admits a non-standard small deformation as a discontinuous group for $G/H$ if $\Gamma$ is isomorphic to a surface group of high genus and its Zariski closure is locally isomorphic to $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$. Furthermore, we also prove that if $G/H$ is a symmetric space and admits some non virtually abelian discontinuous groups, then $G$ contains a Zariski-dense discrete surface subgroup of high genus acting properly discontinuously on $G/H$. As a key part of our proofs, we show that for a discrete surface subgroup $\Gamma$ of high genus contained in a reductive group $G$, if the Zariski closure of $\Gamma$ is locally isomorphic to $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$, then $\Gamma$ admits a small deformation in $G$ whose Zariski closure is a reductive subgroup of the same real rank as $G$.

Abstract:We prove that, for an Enriques surface in odd characteristic, the automorphism group is finitely generated and it acts on the effective nef cone with a rational polyhedral fundamental domain. We also construct a smooth projective surface in odd characteristic which is birational to an Enriques surface and whose automorphism group is discrete but not finitely generated.

Abstract:We provide the first example of a Zariski dense discrete non-lattice subgroup $\Gamma_0$ of a higher rank simple Lie group $G$, which is non-tempered in the sense that the associated quasi-regular representation $L^2(\Gamma_0\backslash G)$ is non-tempered. In fact, let $\Gamma$ be the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic $n$-manifold with properly embedded totally geodesic hyperplane for $n\ge 3$. We prove that there exists a non-empty open subset $\cal O$ of $\rm{Hom}(\Gamma, \rm{SO}(n,2))$ such that for any $\sigma\in \mathcal O$, the image $\sigma(\Gamma)$ is a Zariski dense and non-tempered Anosov subgroup of $\rm{SO}(n,2)$. Moreover the growth indicator of $\sigma(\Gamma)$ is nearly optimal, that is, it almost realizes the supremum of growth indicators of all non-lattice discrete subgroups given by property $(T)$ of $\rm{SO}(n,2)$.

Homology of configuration spaces of surfaces modulo an odd prime

Abstract:For a compact orientable surface $\Sigma_{g,1}$ of genus $g$ with one boundary component and for an odd prime number $p$, we study the homology of the unordered configuration spaces $C_\bullet(\Sigma_{g,1}):=\coprod_{n\ge0}C_n(\Sigma_{g,1})$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_p$. We describe $H_*(C_\bullet(\Sigma_{g,1});\mathbb{F}_p)$ as a bigraded module over the Pontryagin ring $H_*(C_\bullet(D);\mathbb{F}_p)$, where $D$ is a disc, and compute in particular the bigraded dimension over $\mathbb{F}_p$. We also consider the action of the mapping class group $\Gamma_{g,1}$, and prove that the mod-$p$ Johnson kernel $\mathcal{K}_{g,1}(p)\subseteq\Gamma_{g,1}$ is the kernel of the action on $H_*(C_\bullet(\Sigma_{g,1};\mathbb{F}_p))$.

Abstract:Abstract Let be a finite group acting on a connected open Riemann surface by holomorphic automorphisms and acting on a Euclidean space by orthogonal transformations. We identify a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a ‐equivariant conformal minimal immersion . We show in particular that such a map always exists if acts without fixed points on . Furthermore, every finite group arises in this way for some open Riemann surface and . We obtain an analogous result for minimal surfaces having complete ends with finite total Gaussian curvature, and for discrete groups acting on properly discontinuously and acting on by rigid transformations.

Abstract:Let $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ be the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 2$. In this article, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions under which two torsion elements in $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ will have conjugates that generate a finite symmetric or an alternating subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$. Furthermore, we characterize when an involution would lift under the branched cover induced by an alternating action on $S_g$. Moreover, up to conjugacy, we derive conditions under which a given periodic mapping class is contained in a symmetric or an alternating subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$. In particular, we show that symmetric or alternating subgroups can not contain irreducible mapping classes and hyperelliptic involutions. Finally, we classify the symmetric and alternating actions on $S_{10}$ and $S_{11}$ up to a certain equivalence we call weak conjugacy.

Abstract:We construct a natural bijection between odd‐degree irreducible characters of S2n and linear characters of its Sylow 2‐subgroup P2n. We show that such a bijection is nicely induced by the restriction functor. We conclude with a characterization of the irreducible characters χ of Sn such that the restriction of χ to Pn has a unique linear constituent.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a closed oriented surface and $G$ a finite group of orientation preserving automorphisms of $S$ whose orbit space has genus at least $2$. There is a natural group homomorphism from the $G$-centralizer in $Diff^+(S)$ to the $G$-centralizer in $Sp(H_1(S))$. We give a sufficient condition for its image to be a subgroup of finite index and a weaker condition for this to have no finite nonzero orbit (the Putman-Wieland property).

Abstract:Let be a class of finite groups containing a group of even order and closed under subgroups, homomorphic images, and extensions. Then each finite group possesses a maximal -subgroup of odd index and the study of the subgroups can be reduced to the study of the so-called submaximal -subgroups of odd index in simple groups. We prove a theorem that deduces the description of submaximal -subgroups of odd index in an alternating group from the description of maximal -subgroups of odd index in the corresponding symmetric group. In consequence, we classify the submaximal soluble subgroups of odd index in alternating groups up to conjugacy.

Finite Groups of Symplectic Automorphisms of Supersingular K3 surfaces in Odd Characteristics

Abstract:In 2009, Dolgachev-Keum show that finite groups of tame symplectic automorphisms of K3 surfaces in positive characteristics are subgroups of the Mathieu group of degree 23 under mild conditions. In this paper, we utilize lattice-theoretic methods to investigate symplectic actions of finite groups G on K3 surfaces in odd characteristics. In the tame cases (i.e., the order of G is coprime with p) and all the superspecial cases, one can associate with the action a Leech pair which can be detected via Höhn-Mason's list. Notice that the superspecial cases have been resolved by Ohashi-Schütt. If the K3 surface is supersingular with Artin invariant at least two, we develop a new machinery called p-root pairs to detect possible symplectic finite group actions (without the assumption of tameness). The concept of p-root pair is closely related to root systems and Weyl groups. In particular, we recover many results by Dolgachev-Keum with a different method and give an upper bound for the exponent of p in |G|.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a non-positively curved cube complex with hyperbolic fundamental group. We prove that $\pi_1(X)$ has a non-free subgroup of infinite index unless $\pi_1(X)$ is either free or a surface group, answering a question of Wise. A similar result for one-relator groups follows, answering a question posed by several authors. The proof relies on a careful analysis of free and cyclic splittings of cubulated groups.

Abstract:We calculate the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel-Renz invariant $\Sigma^1(G)$ for even Artin groups $G$ with underlying graph $\Gamma$ such that if there is a closed reduced path in $\Gamma$ with all labels bigger than 2 then the length of such path is always odd. We show that $\Sigma^1(G)^c$ is a rationally defined spherical polyhedron.

Abstract:In this paper, it is shown that every closed hyperbolic 3-manifold contains an immersed quasi-Fuchsian closed subsurface of odd Euler characteristic. The construction adopts the good pants method, and the primary new ingredient is an enhanced version of the connection principle, which allows one to connect any two frames with a path of frames in a prescribed relative homology class of the frame bundle. The existence result is applied to show that every uniform lattice of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ admits an exhausting nested sequence of sublattices with exponential homological torsion growth. However, the constructed sublattices are not normal in general.

Abstract:We solve a problem in enumerative combinatorics which is equivalent to counting topological types of certain group actions on compact Riemann surfaces. Let $V_2(F_p)$ be the two-dimensional vector space over $F_p$, the field with $p$ elements, $p$ an odd prime. We count orbits of the general linear group $GL_2(F_p)$ on certain multisets consisting of $R \geq 3$ non-zero columns from $V_2(F_p)$. The $R$-multisets are `zero-sum,' that is, the sum (mod $p$) over the columns in the multiset is $[\begin{smallmatrix} 0 \\ 0 \end{smallmatrix}]$. The orbit count yields the number of topological types of fully ramified actions of the elementary abelian $p$-group of rank $2$ on compact Riemann surfaces of genus $1+ Rp(p-1)/2-p^2.$

Abstract:For a compact 2-orbifold with negative Euler characteristic $\mathcal O^2$, the variety of characters of $\pi_1(\mathcal O^2)$ in $\mathrm{SL}_{n}(\mathbb R)$ is a non-singular manifold at $\mathbb C$-irreducible representations. In this paper we prove that when a $\mathbb C$-irreducible representation of $\pi_1(\mathcal O^2)$ in $\mathrm{SL}_{n}(\mathbb R)$ is viewed in $\mathrm{SL}_{n+1}(\mathbb R)$, then the variety of characters is singular, and we describe the singularity.

Abstract:For each nonnegative integer m we show that any closed, oriented topological four-manifold with fundamental group Z_{4m+2} and odd intersection form, with possibly seven exceptions, either admits no smooth structure or admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures up to diffeomorphism. Moreover, we construct infinite families of non-complex irreducible fake projective planes with diverse fundamental groups.

On subgroups with narrow Schreier graphs

Abstract:We study finitely generated pairs of groups $H \leq G$ such that the Schreier graph of $H$ has at least two ends and is \emph{narrow}. Examples of narrow Schreier graphs include those that are quasi-isometric to finitely ended trees or have linear growth. Under this hypothesis, we show that $H$ is a virtual fiber subgroup if and only if $G$ contains infinitely many double cosets of $H$. Along the way, we prove that if a group acts essentially on a finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complex with no facing triples then it virtually surjects onto the integers with kernel commensurable to a hyperplane stabiliser.

Abstract:For the universal family of cyclic covers of projective spaces branched along hyperplane arrangements in general position, we consider its monodromy group acting on an eigenspace of the middle cohomology of the fiber. We prove the monodromy group is Zariski dense in the corresponding linear group. As an application, we show the fundamental group of the moduli space of hyperplane arrangements is large. It can be viewed as a degenerate analogy of Carlson-Toledo's result about the monodromy groups of smooth hypersurfaces [3]. The main ingredient in the proof is a Picard-Lefschetz type formula for a suitable degeneration of this family.

Abstract:We prove in a large number of cases, that a Zariski dense discrete subgroup of a simple real algebraic group $G$ which contains a higher rank lattice is a lattice in the group $G$.
