Abstract:ABSTRACT Few ecotoxicological studies exist for rare earth elements (REEs), particularly field-based studies on their bioaccumulation and food web dynamics. REE mining has led to significant environment impacts in several countries (China, Brazil, U.S.), yet little is known about the fate and transport of these contaminants of emerging concern. To understand how REEs behave in pristine northern food webs, we measured REE concentrations and carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (∂ 15 N, ∂ 13 C) in biota from marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems of the eastern Canadian Arctic (N=339). Northern ecosystems are potentially vulnerable to REE enrichment from prospective mining projects at high latitudes. Wildlife harvesting and tissue sampling was partly conducted by local hunters through a community-based monitoring project. Results show that REE generally follow a coherent bioaccumulation pattern for sample tissues, with some anomalies for redox-sensitive elements (Ce, Eu). Highest REE concentrations were found at low trophic levels, especially in vegetation and aquatic invertebrates. Terrestrial herbivores, ringed seal, and fish had low REE levels in muscle tissue (<0.1 nmolg -1 ), yet accumulation was an order of magnitude higher in all liver tissues. Age- and length-dependent REE accumulation also suggest that REE uptake is faster than elimination for some species. Overall, REE bioaccumulation patterns appear to be species- and tissue-species, with limited potential for biomagnification. This study provides novel ecotoxicological data on the behaviour of REE in ecosystems and will be useful for environmental impact assessment of REE enrichment in northern regions.
Rare earth element bioaccumulation and cerium anomalies in biota from the Eastern Canadian subarctic (Nunavik)

Abstract:Recent increases in the demand for rare earth elements (REE) have contributed to various countries' interest in exploration of their REE deposits, including within Canada. Current limited knowledge of REE distribution in undisturbed subarctic environments and their bioaccumulation within northern species is addressed through a collaborative community-based environmental monitoring program in Nunavik (Quebec, Canada). This study provides background REE values (lanthanides + yttrium) and investigates REE anomalies (i.e., deviations from standard pattern) across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems in an area where a REE mining project is in development. Results are characteristic of a biodilution of REE, with the highest mean total REE concentrations ( Σ REE) reported in sediments (10 2 nmol/g) and low trophic level organisms (i.e., biofilm, macroalgae, macroinvertebrates, common mussels, and reindeer lichens; 10 1 –10 2 nmol/g), and the lowest mean concentrations in higher-level consumers (i.e., goose, ptarmigan, char, whitefish, cod, sculpin and seal; 10 −2 - 10 1 nmol/g). The animal tissues are of importance to northern villages and analyses demonstrate a species-specific bioaccumulation of REE, with mean concentrations up to 40 times greater in liver compared to muscle, with bones and kidneys presenting intermediate concentrations and the lowest in blubber. Further, a tissue-specific fractionation was presented, with significant light REE (LREE) enrichment compared to heavy REE (HREE) in consumer livers (LREE/HREE ≅ 10 1 ) and the most pronounced negative cerium (Ce) anomalies (<0.80) in liver and bones of fish species. These fractionation patterns, along with novel negative relationships presented between fish size (length, mass) and Ce anomalies suggest metabolic, ecological, and/or environmental influences on REE bioaccumulation and distribution within biota. Background concentration data will be useful in the establishment of REE guidelines; and the trends discussed support the use of Ce anomalies as biomarkers for REE processing in animal species, which requires further investigation to better understand their controlling factors.

Abstract:Human activities have resulted in significant release of rare earth elements (REEs) into the environment. However, the pathways of REEs from waters and soils into freshwater food webs remain poorly understood. Recent studies suggest that aquatic invertebrates may be good biomonitors for REEs, yet there is little information on factors that control REE bioaccumulation in these organisms. Our goal was to study the environmental drivers of REE levels in zooplankton, a key component in plankton food webs, across lakes from geographic areas with different bedrock geology. From 2011 to 2014, bulk zooplankton samples were collected for REE analysis from 39 lakes in eastern Canada. We observed a more than 200 fold variation in surface water REE concentrations and a 10-fold variation in sediment REE concentrations. These concentration gradients were associated with a range of more than an order of magnitude in zooplankton REE concentrations (∑REEY 3.2-210 nmol g-1). We found higher REE bioaccumulation in zooplankton from lakes with lower pH and higher REE to dissolved organic carbon ratios. Bioaccumulation was also strongly linked to the free ion concentrations of REEs (REE3+) in surface waters. Our study suggests that zooplankton REE bioaccumulation is an excellent predictor of bioavailable REEs in freshwaters.

Abstract:The emergence of mining projects for rare earth elements (REEs) in response to rising global demand and geopolitical factors introduces environmental concerns, such as the suspected release of anthropogenic REEs to aquatic systems and the coexistence of radionuclides (U, Th). Northern regions confront heightened challenges from limited research and accelerated climate change. Drivers of REEs in surface waters (including George and Koroc rivers, their tributaries, and thermokarst lakes) were studied (2017–2023) in subarctic Canada within a climate transition zone, near a prospective REE mine. Dissolved REEs (<0.45 μ m) correlated positively with Al, Fe, Th, U, Cl – and DOC. A novel relationship with water temperature demonstrated an approximate 10-fold decrease in REE concentrations over the environmental gradient (2–20 °C ), suggesting complex implications for REE speciation under climate pressures. Optical analyses further predicted REEs were mobilized by humic-rich, terrestrial DOC, with correlations presenting a possible co-transport with Al, Fe and Th. Relationships for redox-sensitive Ce anomalies (Ce/Ce* = 0.18–1.2) with multi-valent trace metals (Al, Fe, Ti) and DOC were suggestive of a preferential adsorption of Ce by inorganic colloids in low-DOC systems. Findings emphasized the potential for changes in REE geochemistry with ongoing northern surface warming and vegetation shifts.

Abstract:Patterns of the distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) in natural objects are important geochemical indicators of the state of the environment. Data on the REE contents in fucus algae from different horizons of the littoral of the Barents Sea are presented for the first time. The behavior of REEs in natural processes is controlled by the solubility of their compounds, their capability of complex formation, and the tetrad-effect of fractionation. Natural factors determining REE migration in the sediment–water–macrophytes system are discussed.

Abstract:A subarctic fish community in mine-impacted Yellowknife Bay (Great Slave Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada) was investigated for biological and ecological processes controlling arsenic bioaccumulation. Total concentrations of arsenic, antimony, and metals were measured in over 400 fishes representing 13 species, and primary producers and consumers were included to characterize food web transfer. Yellowknife Bay had slightly more arsenic in surface waters (~3 μg/L) relative to the main body of Great Slave Lake (<1 μg/L), resulting in two-fold higher total arsenic concentrations in muscle of burbot (Lota lota), lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), and northern pike (Esox lucius). Other mining-associated contaminants, specifically antimony, lead, and silver, were typically below analytical detection in those fish species. No evidence was found for enhanced bioaccumulation of arsenic in long-lived, slow-growing subarctic fishes. Food web biodilution of total arsenic occurred between primary producers, aquatic invertebrates, and fish, although trophic position did not explain arsenic concentrations among fishes. Pelagic-feeding species had higher total arsenic concentrations compared to littoral fishes. Arsenic accumulated in subarctic fishes to comparable levels as fishes from lakes around the world with similar water arsenic concentrations. This first comprehensive study for a subarctic freshwater food web identified the importance of water exposure, biodilution, and habitat-specific feeding on arsenic bioaccumulation.

Abstract:Huge amount of trace metals emitted through manmade activities are carried by the Changjiang River into the East China Sea. Most of them deposit in the Changjiang River Estuary and threaten the regional aquatic envi-ronment. In this study, major and trace elements of 34 archive surface sediments and two cores are examined. Sequential extraction procedures were also performed on surface sediments from 12 sites. We found that Tl, Tm, Er show distinct accumulation in surface sediments in the order of Tm > Tl > Er. Particularly, abnormally elevated HREE are observed mainly in those sites near the mouth of the estuary. Most elements exhibit an obvious reduction in the upper 30 cm of core B8, reflecting a decrease of sediment discharge from Changjiang River runoff. The increase of some trace elements recorded in the upper 20 cm of core C3 demonstrates a distinct local anthropogenic input in recent years.

Abstract:Rare Earth Elements (REE) and several trace elements abundances in mussel's shells collected along the St. Lawrence River, the Estuary, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence (EGSL) reveal coherent chemical variations, with a sharp contrast between freshwater and seawater bivalves. In freshwater mussel's shells, Rare Earth Elements and Y (REY) patterns are rather flat. Their Mn and Ba concentrations are higher than those of EGSL mussel shells, which are much richer in Sr. Shale-normalized REY abundances in mussel's shells from the EGSL show positive anomalies in La and Y and well-marked negative anomalies in Ce, reflecting those of seawater. Prince Edward Island shells show light REE depletion relative to PAAS, positive La and Y anomalies, and negative Ce anomalies. Our data confirm the lack of detectable Gd pollution in the St. Lawrence River and in the EGSL, as well as Pb pollution at the mouth of the Saguenay Fjord and near Rimouski.

Abstract:Different hypotheses have been tested about the fractionation and bioavailability of rare earth elements (REE) in mangrove ecosystems. Rare earth elements and bioavailability in the mangrove ecosystem have been of significant concern and are recognized globally as emerging pollutants. Bioavailability and fractionation of rare earth elements were assessed in Jazan and AlWajah mangrove ecosystems. Comparisons between rare earth elements, multi-elemental ratios, geo-accumulation index (Igeo), and bio-concentration factor (BCF) for the two mangroves and the influence of sediment grain size types on concentrations of rare earth elements were carried out. A substantial difference in mean concentrations (mg/kg) of REE (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) was established, except for mean concentrations of Eu, Gd, Tb, Tm, and Lu. In addition, concentrations of REEs were higher in the Jazan mangrove ecosystem. However, REE composition in the two mangroves was dominated by the lighter REE (LREE and MREE), and formed the major contribution to the total sum of REE at 10.2–78.4%, which was greater than the HREE contribution of 11.3–12.9%. The Post Archean Australian Shale (PAAS) normalized values revealed that lighter REE (LREE and MREE) were steadily enriched above heavy REE. More so, low and negative values of R(H/M) were recorded in the Al Wajah mangrove, indicating higher HREE depletion there. The values of BCF for REEs were less than 1 for all the REEs determined; the recorded BCF for Lu (0.33) and Tm (0.32) were the highest, while the lowest BCF recorded was for Nd (0.09). There is a need for periodic monitoring of REE concentrations in the mangroves to keep track of the sources of this metal contamination and develop conservation and control strategies for these important ecosystems.

Abstract:Rare earth element fractionation and distribution in the coastal ecosystem have been of significant concern and are recognized worldwide as emerging micro-pollutants. However, unlike other metals such as trace elements, little is known about their uptake by aquatic plants such as the mangrove Avicennia marina, especially in the central Red Sea. We investigated the fractionation of rare earth elements in six mangrove ecosystems in the central Red Sea and bioavailability in mangrove A. marina. The concentrations of rare earth elements, sediment grain sizes, multi-elemental ratios, geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and bioconcentration factor (BCF) vary significantly (p < 0.05) across the six mangrove ecosystems. Higher concentrations of rare earth elements were recorded at Al Lith (LT) (101.53 mg/kg) and South Jeddah (SJ) (73.38 mg/kg) mangrove ecosystems. However, multi-elemental ratio R(M/L) reveals positive values. In contrast, multi-elemental ratio R(H/M) reveals negative values corresponding to fractionation patterns enriched with medium rare earth elements and heavy rare earth elements depletion across the six mangrove ecosystems. BCF values for rare earth elements were <1, but Lutetium (0.32) had the highest BCF among the rare earth elements, suggesting an efficient accumulation of Lutetium than any other rare earth elements. The scale of Igeo revealed strong contamination (4 ≤ Igeo ≥ 5) of sediment with Lanthanum, Cerium, Praseodynium, Samarium, Godolinium, Holmium, Erbium, Ytterbium, and moderate contamination with Thulium, Terbium, and Dysprosium (1 ≤ Igeo ≤ 3). Principal component analysis showed that clay silt sediment grain size influences rare earth element concentrations in the central Red Sea. Our results provide new evidence for rare earth element fractionation and accumulation in sediment and the potential use of mangrove A. marina for rare earth element monitoring in mangrove ecosystems in the central Red Sea.
Rare earth elements in surface lake sediments of Russian arctic: Natural and potential anthropogenic impact to their accumulation

Abstract:Investigations of the rare earth elements (REEs) concentrations in surface sediments of small lakes in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation are presented. The territories of Murmansk Region and the Republic of Karelia were used as key study areas. The sampling of 9 lake sediments was carried out. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method was used as a main approach to estimate total concentrations of REEs and heavy metals and content of their elements in different fractions, using sequential extraction method. The role of the natural landscapes factor (tundra, forest-tundra, taiga) in the process of REEs accumulation in lake sediments was evaluated in the course of the work. It was revealed that the highest median accumulation of REEs occurred in the sediments of lakes in the tundra zone, and the lowest median accumulation of REEs occurred in the lakes in the forest zone (taiga). The dynamics of the REEs accumulation in the lakes of the background (pristine) regions of the Arctic, as well as in the lakes of urbanized territories, is shown on the example of the cities of Murmansk Region. The analysis of the vertical distribution of REEs and heavy metals in the cores of sediments of the studied lakes showed that the anthropogenic factor plays an important role in the accumulation of REEs in urban water bodies. First of all, this is due to dust from construction, wear and tear of houses and road structures, and weathering of soils and quaternary deposits in urban areas. All urban lakes showed similarity between distribution of REEs and heavy metals in the sediments. The main fractions of REEs in the sediments of the lakes of the Arctic zone of Russia were determined. It was revealed that the residual phase of sediments and organic matter plays a significant role in the accumulation of REEs in surface sediments of the North of Russia. At the same time, mobile forms and phases of REEs associated with Fe and Mn oxides also did not play a large role in the accumulation of REEs in the sediments of lakes in Northwest Russia.

Abstract:Trace elements can accumulate in aquatic foodwebs, becoming potentially hazardous to wildlife and human health. While many studies have examined mercury dynamics in freshwater environments, evidence for the bioaccumulative potential of other trace elements (e.g., arsenic) is conflicting. Trace element concentrations found in surface water of the Red Deer River, Alberta, Canada, have raised concern for potential accumulation in aquatic biota. We investigated fish from this river to better understand the influence of biological and environmental factors in trace element bioaccumulation. We analyzed 20 trace elements, and stable nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) isotopes, in the muscle tissue of eight species. Zinc, selenium, arsenic, chromium, and nickel were detected in the majority of fish at low concentrations. However, mercury was detected in all fish and often exceeded criteria for the protection of consumers. Body size was often positively correlated with trace element concentrations. Additionally, δ15N and δ13C were correlated to mercury and arsenic concentrations, indicating that mercury biomagnifies whereas arsenic biodiminishes. Spatial patterns of fish trace element concentrations did not reflect differences in surface water concentrations. These findings indicate that fish trace element concentrations are primarily moderated by biological factors, such as trophic position and body size, and are not locally restricted to areas of relatively high environmental concentrations in the Red Deer River.This article is protected by copyright. Global natural concentrations of Rare Earth Elements in aquatic organisms: Progress and lessons from fifty years of studies

Abstract:Rare Earth Elements (REEs) consist of a coherent group of elements with similar physicochemical properties and exhibit comparable geochemical behaviors in the environment, making them excellent tracers of environmental processes. For the past 50 years, scientific communities investigated the REE concentrations in biota through various types of research (e.g. exploratory studies, environmental proxies). The extensive development of new technologies over the past two decades has led to the increased exploitation and use of REEs, resulting in their release into aquatic ecosystems. The bioaccumulation of these emerging contaminants has prompted scientific communities to explore the fate of anthropogenic REEs within aquatic ecosystems. To achieve this, it is necessary to determine the natural concentration levels of REEs in aquatic organisms and the factors controlling REE dynamics. However, knowledge gaps still exist, and no comprehensive approach currently exists to assess the REE concentrations at the ecosystem scale or the factors controlling these concentrations in aquatic organisms. Based on a database comprising 102 articles, this study aimed to: i) provide a retrospective analysis of research topics over a 50-year period; ii) establish reference REE concentrations in several representative phyla of aquatic ecosystems; and iii) examine the global-scale influences of habitat and trophic position as controlling factors of REE concentrations in organisms. This study provides reference concentrations for 16 phyla of freshwater or marine organisms. An influence of habitat REE concentrations on organisms has been observed on a global scale. A trophic dilution of REE concentrations was highlighted, indicating the absence of biomagnification. Lastly, the retrospective approach of this study revealed several research gaps and proposed corresponding perspectives to address them. Embracing these perspectives in the coming years will lead to a better understanding of the risks of anthropogenic REE exposure for aquatic organisms.

Abstract:A static laboratory aquatic microcosm was conducted to evaluate the distribution of mixed REEs—rare earth elements (lanthanum, cerium, samarium, gadolinium and yttrium) in natural water bodies. Several kinds of species were used. Duckweed represented phytoplankton, daphnia represented crustacean, shellfish represented benthic species and goldfish represented fishes. Samples from water, sediment and each species were analyzed by ICP-AES to determine their REEs contents. It was found that most REEs was adsorbed by sediment and might be redischarged into water, and the bioconcentration order of REEs in the species is duckweed > daphnia > shellfish > goldfish. The results will be useful to evaluate the environmental impact of the wide use of REEs in China.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REE) are increasingly used in industrial applications, consumer electronics and green technologies, but their baseline concentrations and distribution patterns in the North American Great Lakes remain poorly understood. Here, we report dissolved REE concentrations in > 70 surface water samples from Lakes Huron, Erie, and Ontario (2021 and 2022) and assess their spatial distribution patterns and governing biogeochemical controls. Dissolved (<0.22 µm-filtered) REE concentrations were spatially heterogeneous (up to 3 orders-of-magnitude) across the lakes and did not systematically increase upstream-to-downstream through the basin. Nearshore-to-offshore decreases in dissolved REE levels were observed for all lakes and appeared the result of REE adsorption to colloids and subsequent sedimentation. Combined with enrichment of light over heavy REE, particularly in samples closer to shore, our data suggests that riverine input is a major pathway by which REE are loaded to the lakes. Finally, we used normalization and pattern-filling to assess REE anomalies in the lake surface waters. Anomalies for Gd (>20 % across the lakes) were notably higher than those of the other REE but varied significantly spatially, and also showed enrichment nearshore, particularly near urban centers and in Lake Ontario. This work provides new surveillance data to further develop our understanding of REE dynamics in the Great Lakes.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REEs or lanthanides) were measured in ten freshwater fish species from a reservoir in Washington State (United States). The REE distribution patterns were examined within fillet and whole body tissues for three size classes. Total concentrations (ΣREE) ranged from 0.014 to 3.0 mg kg(-1) (dry weight) and averaged 0.243 mg kg(-1) (dry weight). Tissue concentration patterns indicated that REEs accumulated to a greater extent in organs, viscera, and bone compared to muscle (fillet) tissues. Benthic feeding species (exposed to sediments) exhibited greater concentrations of REEs than pelagic omnivorous or piscivorous fish species. Decreasing REE concentrations were found with increasing age, total length or weight for largescale and longnose suckers, smallmouth bass, and walleye. Concentration patterns in this system were consistent with natural conditions without anthropogenic sources of REEs. These data provide additional reference information with regard to the fate and transport of REEs in freshwater fish tissues in a large aquatic system.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REEs) are emerging contaminants due to their worldwide exploitation in the high-technology sector. Aquaculture systems, particularly those located within coastal areas, are fragile ecosystems due to anthropogenic impacts regarding urban and aquaculture activities. However, to date, there are no reports on the combined toxicity of rare earth element (REE) mixtures on aquatic biota in sediments from coastal aquaculture systems. In this study, the combined toxicity of REE mixtures based on probabilistic risk assessment indicated that the surface sediments of Zhelin Bay had a 1.86% probability of toxic effects on aquatic biota. The average value of total REEs (TREEs) was 297.37 μg/g, with light REEs representing the major part. A factor analysis (FA)-geographic information system (GIS)-based approach coupled with correlation analysis (CA) revealed that the REEs are derived from anthropogenic sources through fluvial processes.

Abstract:We investigated trophic transfer of cadmium (Cd) through an Arctic marine food web in Hudson Bay and compared it with mercury (Hg), a metal known to strongly biomagnify. We evaluated blue mussel, sea urchin, common eider, sculpin, Arctic cod, and ringed seal for the influence of dietary and biological variables on variation in Cd and Hg concentrations. Age and size influenced metal concentrations among individuals within a vertebrate species. Consumer carbon and sulfur isotope values were correlated with their Cd and Hg concentrations, indicating habitat-specific feeding influenced metal bioaccumulation. Trophic transfer patterns for Cd depended on the vertebrate tissue, with food web biodilution observed for the muscle but not the liver. Liver Cd concentrations were higher in ringed seal and some common eider relative to prey. In contrast, we observed mercury biomagnification for both tissues. Tissue- and species-specific physiology can explain discrepancies of Cd trophic transfer in this Arctic marine food web.

Abstract:The concentrations and distribution spectra of 14 stable rare earth elements (REE) were studied for surface waters ( n = 30) and sediments ( n = 30) of the tropical zone Mgoua watershed in southwest of Cameroon. Samples were analyzed using the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) method. The ∑REE concentrations of the surface waters vary from 0.11 to 6.60 μg/L with an average value of 1.18 μg/L. This average is 150 times lower than the average values of the Post-Archean Australian Average Shale (PAAS). In the sediments, the concentrations range from 282.12 to 727.67 ppm with an average value of 550.05 ppm, making it 2.5 times higher than the PAAS. Rare earth spectra normalized to PAAS are spread out and show heavy rare earth enrichment; positive Eu anomalies; negative, low, or no Ce anomalies; and a gradual decrease in heavy earths in river and well waters and sediments, but are sawtooth with strong negative Ce anomalies in effluent waters and sediments. A low rare earth fractionation is noted in river and well waters [(La/Yb) N ~ 0.35–1.19], while it is high in effluent waters [(La/Yb) N ~ 0.42–56.99]; a slight depletion of rare earths in all environments [(La/Sm) N ~ 0.69–2.35], as well as a depletion of heavy rare earths [(Gd/Yb) N ~ 0.58–1.94]. In the sediments, the same characteristics are found with elemental ratio values differing slightly [(La/Yb) N ~ 1.15–1.99]; [(La/Sm)N ~ 0.75–1.36]; and [(Gd/Yb) N ~ 1.15–2.01]. This study shows that the Mgoua watershed does not have a high concentration of REE, although in the sediments they are well above the average PASS value while they are insignificant in the waters.
