Abstract:Concerns over fossil fuel depletion, fluctuating fuel prices, and CO2 emissions have accelerated the development of electric vehicle (EV) technologies. This article reviews advancements in EV fast charging technology and explores the development of battery-assisted DC fast charging stations to address the limitations of traditional chargers. Our proposed approach integrates battery storage, allowing chargers to operate independently of the electric grid by storing electrical energy during off-peak hours and releasing it during peak times. This reduces dependence on grid power and enhances grid stability. Moreover, the transformer-less, modular design of the proposed solution offers greater flexibility, scalability, and reduced installation costs. Additionally, the use of smart energy management systems, incorporating artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to dynamically adjust charging rates, will be discussed to optimize efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the following aspects: 1. **Improving the efficiency and reliability of electric vehicle charging infrastructure**: - The development of current electric vehicle (EV) technology is restricted by traditional charging stations. In particular, alternating - current (AC) and direct - current (DC) fast - charging stations rely on power grid supply, which leads to an increased burden on the power grid and a decline in power quality. The paper proposes a battery - assisted DC fast - charging station. By integrating a battery storage system within the charging station, it can store electrical energy during off - peak hours and release it during peak hours, thereby reducing the dependence on real - time power grid supply and improving power grid stability. 2. **Reducing the installation and operation costs of charging stations**: - The paper proposes a transformer - free, modular - design solution, which provides greater flexibility, scalability and lower installation costs. In addition, by using a smart energy management system and dynamically adjusting the charging rate in combination with artificial intelligence and machine - learning techniques, the efficiency and cost - effectiveness can be further optimized. 3. **Addressing the transformer capacity limitations of high - power DC fast - charging stations**: - The installation of high - power DC fast - charging stations requires sufficient transformer capacity. If the transformer capacity of a facility is insufficient, it is not possible to install a charging station with a power of 120 kW or higher. Even if there is available capacity, many enterprises are skeptical about these power - hungry charging stations because they may damage the existing power grid. The solution proposed in the paper reduces the demand for transformer capacity by storing electrical energy during off - peak hours, thereby reducing the installation difficulty and cost. 4. **Extending battery life and reducing maintenance costs**: - High - power energy transfer shortens battery life during the fast - charging process of electric vehicles, resulting in frequent battery replacement and additional high costs. Through design and simulation studies, the paper shows that the choice of using lithium - ion batteries is more cost - reasonable within 10 years, thus solving this problem. 5. **Promoting the integration of renewable energy**: - The paper explores how to integrate renewable energy (such as solar and wind energy) into charging stations to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and improve environmental - friendliness. The use of renewable energy helps to stabilize the power grid and reduce peak - load demand, especially when used in combination with energy - storage systems. In summary, this paper aims to solve the problems of efficiency, cost, transformer capacity limitations, battery life and renewable energy integration currently faced by electric vehicle charging infrastructure through the design and implementation of battery - assisted DC fast - charging stations, thereby promoting the wide application and development of electric vehicle technology.
