Abstract:The precise characterization of ultrashort laser pulses has been of interest to the scientific community for many years. Frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) has been extensively used to retrieve the temporal and spectral field distributions of ultrashort laser pulses. In this work, we exploit the high, broad-band nonlinear optical response of a WS2 monolayer to simultaneously characterize two ultrashort laser pulses with different frequencies. The relaxed phase-matching conditions in a WS2 monolayer enable the simultaneous acquisition of the spectra resulting from both four-wave mixing (FWM) and sum-frequency generation (SFG) nonlinear processes while varying the time delay between the two ultrashort pulses. Next, we introduce an adjusted double-blind FROG algorithm, based on iterative fast Fourier transforms between two FROG traces, to extract the intensity distribution and phase of two ultrashort pulses from the combination of their FWM and SFG FROG traces. Using this algorithm, we find an agreement between the computed and observed FROG traces for both the FWM and SFG processes. Exploiting the broad-band nonlinear response of a WS2 monolayer, we additionally characterize one of the pulses using a second-harmonic generation (SHG) FROG trace to validate the pulse shapes extracted from the combination of the FWM and SFG FROG traces. The retrieved pulse shape from the SHG FROG agrees well with the pulse shape retrieved from our nondegenerate cross-correlation FROG measurement. In addition to the nonlinear parametric processes, we also observe a nonlinearly generated photoluminescence (PL) signal emitted from the WS2 monolayer. Because of its nonlinear origin, the PL signal can also be used to obtain complementary autocorrelation and cross-correlation traces.

Abstract:Accurately characterizing the intensity and duration of strong-field femtosecond pulses within the interaction volume is crucial for attosecond science. However, this remains a major bottleneck, limiting accuracy of the strong-field, and in particular, high harmonic generation experiments. We present a novel scheme for the in situ measurement and control of spatially resolved strong-field femtosecond pulse intensity and duration within the interaction focal region. Our approach combines conjugate focal imaging with in situ ion measurements using gas densities pertinent to attosecond science experiments. Independent measurements in helium and argon, accompanied by a fitting to a strong field ionization dynamic model, yield accurate and consistent results across a wide range of gas densities and underscores the significance of double ionization, as well as barrier suppression ionization. Direct spatially resolved characterization of the driving laser is a critical step towards resolving the averaging problem in the interaction volume, paving the way for more accurate and reliable attosecond experiments.

Non-perturbative Effects in Attosecond Four-Wave Mixing Spectra

Abstract:We study the nonlinear optical response of argon to a four-wave-mixing pulse sequence consisting of an extreme ultraviolet pulse, an overlapping collinear IR and an non-collinear delayed IR pulses. Absorption of an extreme ultraviolet and an IR photon from the collinear beams excites, sequentially, the $3s^{-1}4p$ bright state and the {$3s^{-1}3d/5s$} dark states. The subsequent absorption of an IR photon from the non-collinear beam results in an angled extreme ultraviolet emission whose variation with delay encodes coupling between autoionizing-states, dark-state lifetimes, and non-perturbative effects. Both our measurements and \emph{ab initio} simulations of the angled four-wave-mixing signal show a double-peak structure in delay dependence, in excellent agreement with each other. We attribute the minimum at the center of the signal to the rapid Rabi cycling, driven by the IR pulse, between dark states and the $3s^{-1}4p$ resonance, which results in the destructive interference in the final transition amplitude.

Abstract:We report a second-order nonlinear nanoprobe for characterizing ultrafast optical near fields. The proposed nanoprobe comprises second harmonic nanocrystals attached to a carbon nanotube, which is in turn attached to a silica fiber taper. We demonstrate in situ pulse characterization directly in the air core of a photonic crystal fiber. Further, it is shown that nanoprobes containing a single nanocrystal in the tip of the nanotube can be fabricated by auxiliary focused ion beam nanomilling. These results indicate that the proposed nanoprobe can open an avenue for probing the evolution of ultrafast optical fields in complex three-dimensional micro-or nanostructures. A Novel Femtosecond-Gated, High-Resolution, Frequency-Shifted Shearing Interferometry Technique for Probing Pre-Plasma Expansion in Ultra-Intense Laser Experiments

Abstract:Ultra-intense laser-matter interaction experiments (>10$^{18}$ W/cm$^{2}$) with dense targets are highly sensitive to the effect of laser "noise" (in the form of pre-pulses) preceding the main ultra-intense pulse. These system-dependent pre-pulses in the nanosecond and/or picosecond regimes are often intense enough to modify the target significantly by ionizing and forming a plasma layer in front of the target. Time resolved interferometry offers a robust way to characterize the expanding plasma during this period. We have developed a novel pump-probe interferometry system for an ultra-intense laser experiment that uses two short-pulse amplifiers synchronized by one ultra-fast seed oscillator to achieve 40-femtosecond time resolution over hundreds of nanoseconds, using a variable delay line and other techniques. The first of these amplifiers acts as the pump and delivers maximal energy to the interaction region. The second amplifier is frequency shifted and then frequency doubled to generate the femtosecond probe pulse. After passing through the laser-target interaction region, the probe pulse is split and recombined in a laterally sheared Michelson interferometer. Importantly, the frequency shift in the probe allows strong plasma self-emission at the second harmonic of the pump to be filtered out, allowing plasma expansion near the critical surface and elsewhere to be clearly visible in the interferograms. Three-phase reconstructions of the electron densities are then inferred by Abel inversion. This interferometric system delivers precise measurements of pre-plasma expansion that can identify the condition of the target at the moment that the ultra-intense pulse arrives. Such measurements are indispensable for correlating laser pre-pulse measurements with instantaneous plasma profiles and for enabling realistic Particle-in-Cell simulations of the ultra-intense laser-matter interaction.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally investigate an all-optical temporal measurement of low-power-density optical pulse shape based on the four-wave-mixing process. It is found that two parameters of the pulse width ratio and frequency difference of the two optical sources are crucial to the measurement accuracy. The qualitative analysis of the impact of the two parameters on the measurement accuracy is employed by simulation. The normalized error denoting the measurement accuracy becomes worse when the pulse width ratio becomes larger, whereas it keeps relatively stable when various overlapping-free frequency differences are applied. In the experiment, temporal measurement of an actively mode-locked laser with ~10-picosecond duration at a repetition frequency of 20.095 GHz is demonstrated, verifying the simulation analysis.

The pulse duration can be obtained from the width of the visibility of two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference or the indistinguishability of the two photons. Moreover, the shape of a single-photon pulse can be measured with ultra-short single-photon pulses through the two-photon interference.

Abstract:We demonstrate, for the first time, the application of rare-gas filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibres (HC-PCFs) as tuneable ultraviolet light sources in femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. The time-resolved photoelectron imaging technique reveals non-adiabatic dynamical processes operating on three distinct timescales in the styrene molecule following excitation over the 242-258 nm region. These include ultrafast (<100 fs) internal conversion between the S2(pipi*) and S1(pipi*) electronic states and subsequent intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution within S1(pipi*). Compact, cost-effective and highly efficient bench-top HC-PCF sources have huge potential to open up many exciting new avenues for ultrafast spectroscopy in the ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet spectral regions. We anticipate that our initial validation of this approach will generate important impetus in this area

Optimizing Spectral Phase Transfer in Four-Wave Mixing with Gas-filled Capillaries: A Trade-off Study

Abstract:Four-wave mixing (FWM) in gas-filled hollow-core capillaries, a nonlinear optical process that mixes signal and pump photon frequencies to generate idler frequency photons, offers a method for precise spectral phase transfer from signal to idler at ultrashort timescales and extreme powers. However, this regime is challenged by competing linear and nonlinear dynamics, leading to significant trade-offs between spectral phase transfer and conversion efficiency. Our computational investigation focuses on upconversion of femtosecond pulses from the infrared (IR) to the ultraviolet (UV), a range notoriously difficult to manipulate. We explore an intermediate energy regime that strikes an optimal balance between FWM-mediated phase-transfer fidelity and nonlinear conversion efficiency. By adjusting the energy ratios and spectral phase profiles of the input signal, we achieve conversion efficiencies of approximately 5%-15% while maintaining an effectively quasi-linear spectral phase transfer. These findings contribute to establishing first-principles and scaling laws essential for applications such as high-precision imaging, spectroscopy, quantum transduction, and distributed entangled interconnects, facilitating advanced control of ultrafast photonic and electronic wavepackets in quantum materials with unprecedented spatial and temporal precision.

Abstract:Attosecond four-wave mixing spectroscopy using an XUV pulse and two noncollinear near-infrared pulses is employed to measure Rydberg wavepacket dynamics resulting from extreme ultraviolet excitation of a 3s electron in atomic argon into a series of autoionizing 3s-1np Rydberg states around 29 eV. The emitted signals from individual Rydberg states exhibit oscillatory structure and persist well beyond the expected lifetimes of the emitting Rydberg states. These results reflect substantial contributions of longer-lived Rydberg states to the four wave mixing emission signals of each individually detected state. A wavepacket decomposition analysis reveals that coherent amplitude transfer occurs predominantly from photoexcited 3s-1(n+1)p states to the observed 3s-1np Rydberg states. The experimental observations are reproduced by time-dependent Schrödinger equation simulations using electronic structure and transition moment calculations. The theory highlights that coherent amplitude transfer is driven non-resonantly to the 3s-1np states by the near-infrared light through 3s-1(n+1)s and 3s-1(n-1)d dark states during the four-wave mixing process.

Abstract:The coherence time measurement of laser pulse was studied by using counter-running pump probe technique in two-photon absorption materials. The coherence time of 23 ps, 532nm laser pulses for a Nd:YAG laser was measured, which coincided with the previous experimental results and had the same precision. The experimental results and the theoretical analysis show that additional two-photon absorption arises from two-beam coherence effect. This method can be applied to other laser measurement with various pulse widths.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal manipulation of ultrashort laser pulses is crucial for enhancing laser processing and phonon generation. Optimization of these applications requires ultrafast visualization of the underlying processes. In this study, we induced laser ablation using spatiotemporally manipulated double pulses focused from two angles onto a glass surface with a 0.7 ps interval, and captured the images of its dynamics with 5 sequential frames at a frame interval of 0.8 ps. The observed dynamics suggest that the laser profile reflected on the glass surface is influenced by its topography, which in turn affects the behavior of air breakdown plasmas.

Abstract:An adaptive pulse shaper controlled by multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scanning (MIIPS) was used, together with a prism-pair, to measure and cancel high-order phase distortions introduced by a high-numerical-aperture objective and other dispersive elements of a two-photon laser-scanning microscope. The delivery of broad-bandwidth (approximately 100 nm), sub-12-fs pulses was confirmed by interferometric autocorrelation measurements at the focal plane. A comparison of two-photon imaging with transform-limited and second-order-dispersion compensated laser pulses of the same energy showed a 6-to-11-fold improvement in the two-photon excitation fluorescence signal when applied to cells and tissue, and up to a 19-fold improvement in the second harmonic generation signal from a rat tendon specimen.
