Abstract:The Brown-throated Martin Riparia paludicola (subspecies mauritanica ) of family Hirundinidae is endemic to Morocco and known for its ability to dig tunnels in earthen banks in which it nests. The nature of the sediment and the morphological features of the nest holes and riverbank habitat have not been thoroughly described across the species' range in Morocco. Here, we present a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the textural characteristics of the sediment chosen by the martins in two successive breeding seasons, using a sample of 104 nests, which covered most of the species' distribution range in Morocco. We also studied the surrounding landscape and morphological features of a total of 114 nests. Our observations show that besides nesting in natural riverbank habitat, the Brown-throated Martin can use both manmade embankments and substrates (even cement and concrete) to carry out a successful breeding cycle. This study provides important information on the nesting habitat of the Brown-throated Martin across Morocco. We believe that such descriptive work can help with the conservation of this Moroccan endemic by better targeting the right habitat to either protect or restore. The findings also include information useful to assist in creating new nesting sites for the species. L'Hirondelle paludicole Riparia paludicola (sous-espèce mauritanica ) est connue pour sa capacité à creuser des tunnels dans les berges où elle niche. La nature des sédiments et les caractéristiques morphologiques des nids et des berges n'ont pas été décrites en détail dans l'aire de répartition de l'espèce au Maroc. Dans cet article, nous présentons une analyse qualitative et quantitative de la nature texturale des sédiments choisis par les hirondelles pour se reproduire au cours de deux années successives, à partir d'un échantillon de 104 nids, couvrant la majeure partie de l'aire de répartition de l'espèce au Maroc. Nous explorons également les caractéristiques morphologiques et le paysage environnant de 114 nids. Nos observations montrent qu'en l'absence de berges naturelles adaptées, l'Hirondelle paludicole peut utiliser aussi bien les falaises d'origine anthropique que des substrats complètement artificiels, comme le ciment et le béton, pour mener à bien son cycle de reproduction. Avec ce travail, nous aspirons à fournir des informations importantes sur l'habitat de nidification de l'Hirondelle paludicole à travers le Maroc. Nous pensons qu'un tel travail descriptif peut contribuer à la conservation de ce taxon endémique marocain en concentrant mieux les efforts de conservation, en ciblant le bon habitat à protéger ou à restaurer. Il pourrait également fournir des informations utiles pour toute éventuelle création de nouveaux sites de nidification pour l'espèce.
