Abstract:A systematic study is made of the non-perturbative effects in quantum chromodynamics. The basic object is the two-point functions of various currents. At large Euclidean momenta q the non-perturbative contributions induce a series in (μ2/q2) where μ is some typical hadronic mass. The terms of this series are shown to be of two distinct types. The first few of them are connected with vacuum fluctuations of large size, and can be consistently accounted for within the Wilson operator expansion. On the other hand, in high orders small-size fluctuations show up and the high-order terms do not reduce (generally speaking) to the vacuum-to-vacuum matrix elements of local operators. This signals the breakdown of the operator expansion. The corresponding critical dimension is found. We propose a Borel improvement of the power series. On one hand, it makes the two-point functions less sensitive to high-order terms, and on the other hand, it transforms the standard dispersion representation into a certain integral representation with exponential weight functions. As a result we obtain a set of the sum rules for the observable spectral densities which correlate the resonance properties to a few vacuum-to-vacuum matrix elements. As the last bid to specify the sum rules we estimate the matrix elements involved and elaborate several techniques for this purpose.

Abstract:We discuss our present knowledge of $\alpha_s$, the fundamental running coupling or effective charge of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). A precise understanding of the running of $\alpha_s(Q^2) $ at high momentum transfer, $Q$, is necessary for any perturbative QCD calculation. Equally important, the behavior of $\alpha_s$ at low $Q^2$ in the nonperturbative QCD domain is critical for understanding strong interaction phenomena, including the emergence of mass and quark confinement. The behavior of $\alpha_s(Q^2)$ at all momentum transfers also provides a connection between perturbative and nonperturbative QCD phenomena, such as hadron spectroscopy and dynamics. We first sketch the origin of the QCD coupling, the reason why its magnitude depends on the scale at which hadronic phenomena are probed, and the resulting consequences for QCD phenomenology. We then summarize latest measurements in both the perturbative and nonperturbative domains. New theory developments include the derivation of the universal nonperturbative behavior of $\alpha_s(Q^2)$ from both the Dyson-Schwinger equations and light-front holography. We also describe theory advances for the calculation of gluon and quark Schwinger functions in the nonperturbative domain and the relation of these quantities to $\alpha_s$. We conclude by highlighting how the nonperturbative knowledge of $\alpha_s$ is now providing a parameter-free determination of hadron spectroscopy and structure, a central and long-sought goal of QCD studies.

Mixing of X and Y States from QCD Sum Rules Analysis

Abstract:We study (Q) over barQ (q) over barq and (Q) over bar qQ (q) over bar states as mixed states in QCD sum rules. By calculating the two-point correlation functions of pure states of their corresponding currents, we review the mass and coupling constant predictions of J(PC) = 1(++), 1(--), and 1(-+) states. By calculating the two-point mixed correlation functions of (Q) over bar QQ (q) over barq and (Q) over bar qQ (q) over bar currents, we estimate the mass and coupling constants of the corresponding "physical state" that couples to both (Q) over barQ (q) over barq and (Q) over bar qQ (q) over bar currents. Our results suggest that for 1(++) states, the (Q) over barQ (q) over barq and (Q) over bar qQ (q) over bar components are more likely to mix, while for 1(--) and 1(-+) states, there is less mixing between (Q) over barQ (q) over barq and (Q) over bar qQ (q) over bar. Our results suggest the Y series of states have more complicated components.

Abstract:QCD is now a mature theory, and it is possible to begin to view its place in the conceptual universe of physics with an appropriate perspective. There is a certain irony in the achievements of QCD. For the problems which initially drove its development — specifically, the desire to understand in detail the force that holds atomic nuclei together, and later the desire to calculate the spectrum of hadrons and their interactions — only limited insight has been achieved. However, I shall argue that QCD is actually more special and important a theory than one had any right to anticipate. In many ways, the importance of the solution transcends that of the original motivating problems. After elaborating on these quasiphilosophical remarks, I discuss two current frontiers of physics that illustrate the continuing vitality of the ideas. The recent wealth of beautiful precision experiments measuring the parameters of the standard model have made it possible to consider the unification of couplings in unprecedented quantitative detail. One central result emerging from these developments is a tantalizing hint of virtual supersymmetry. The possibility of phase transitions in matter at temperatures of order ~102 MeV, governed by QCD dynamics, is of interest from several points of view. Besides having a certain intrinsic grandeur, the question “Does the nature of matter change qualitatively, as it is radically heated?” is important for cosmology, relevant to planned high-energy heavy-ion collision experiments, and provides a promising arena for numerical simulations of QCD. Recent numerical work seems to be consistent with expectations suggested by renormalization group analysis of the potential universality classes of the QCD chiral phase transition; specifically, that the transition is second-order for two species of massless quarks but first order otherwise. There is an interesting possibility of long-range correlations in heavy ion collisions due to the creation of large regions of the misaligned chiral condensate. Finally, at the end, there is a brief discussion on the relation between scaling violations and running of the coupling. Some statements made later in the conference seemed to indicate that the relationship between these concepts is commonly misunderstood, so I’m smuggling this bit in even though it wasn’t part of the original talk.

Abstract:As the fundamental theory of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) plays a crucial role in precision tests of the standard model (SM) and in the search for new physics. In this article, we provide a brief overview of recent progress in QCD studies relevant to collider physics, focusing on fixed-order calculations and resummation techniques, parton distribution functions and their calculations, as well as their impact on the search for new physics, SM precision tests, and studying the intrinsic properties of hadrons. Based on this, we also discuss the prospects of their applications and intersections with other disciplines in the future.

Abstract:The subject of the first section-lecture is concerned with the strength and the weakness of the perturbation theory (PT) approach, that is expansion in powers of a small parameter $\alpha$, in Quantum Theory. We start with outlining a general troublesome feature of the main quantum theory instrument, the perturbation expansion method. The striking issue is that perturbation series in powers of $\alpha \ll 1$ is not a convergent series. The formal reason is an essential singularity of quantum amplitude (matrix element) $C(\alpha)$ at the origin $\alpha=0$. In many physically important cases one needs some alternative means of theoretical analysis. In particular, this refers to perturbative QCD (pQCD) in the low-energy domain. In the second section-lecture, we discuss the approach of Analytic Perturbation Theory (APT). We start with a short historic preamble and then discuss how combining the Dispersion Relation with the Renormalization Group (RG) techniques yields the APT with \myMath{\displaystyle e^{-1/\alpha}} nonanalyticity. Next we consider the results of APT applications to low-energy QCD processes and show that in this approach the fourth-loop contributions, which appear to be on the asymptotic border in the pQCD approach, are of the order of a few per mil. Then we note that using the RG in QCD dictates the need to use the Fractional APT (FAPT) and describe its basic ingredients. As an example of the FAPT application in QCD we consider the pion form factor $F_\pi(Q^2)$ calculation. At the end, we discuss the resummation of nonpower series in {(F)APT} with application to the estimation of the Higgs-boson-decay width $\Gamma_{H\to\bar{b}b}(m_H^2)$.

QCD Perturbation Theory: It's not what you were taught

Abstract:Physical quantities in QCD do not depend upon $\alpha_s(Q)$. There is no way to measure $\alpha_s(Q)$ experimentally. If those statements sound shocking, please read on. They are actually well-known facts, though ones that are constantly being ignored in the QCD literature. Renormalized perturbation theory is not an ordinary power-series expansion; its renormalization-scheme ambiguity is not merely a minor nuisance. Rather, it is a structure in which invariance under redefinitions of the coupling is a fundamental symmetry -- a symmetry that, like any other, deserves respect. I speak bluntly because without a change in mindset perturbative QCD can never become a proper, scientific enterprise.

Abstract:We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to strongly coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We also discuss how success in describing the strong interaction impacts other fields, and, in turn, how such subjects can impact studies of the strong interaction. In the course of the work we offer a perspective on the many research streams which flow into and out of QCD, as well as a vision for future developments.

Abstract:In attempting to match QCD with Nature, it is necessary to confront the many complexities of strong, nonlinear dynamics in relativistic quantum field theory, e.g. the loss of particle number conservation, the frame and scale dependence of the explanations and interpretations of observable processes, and the evolving character of the relevant degrees-of-freedom. The peculiarities of QCD ensure that it is also the only known fundamental theory with the capacity to sustain massless elementary degrees-of-freedom, gluons and quarks; and yet gluons and quarks are predicted to acquire mass dynamically so that the only massless systems in QCD are its composite Nambu-Goldstone bosons. All other everyday bound states possess nuclear-size masses, far in excess of anything that can directly be tied to the Higgs boson. These observations highlight fundamental questions within the Standard Model: what is the source of the mass for the vast bulk of visible matter in the Universe, how is its appearance connected with confinement; how is this mass distributed within hadrons and does the distribution differ from one hadron to another? This contribution sketches insights drawn using modern methods for the continuum bound-state problem in QCD, and how they have been informed by empirical information on the hadron spectrum and nucleon-to-resonance transition form factors.
Chromaticity of Gravitational Microlensing Events

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the color changes of gravitational microlensing events caused by the two different mechanisms of differential amplification for a limb-darkened extended source and blending. From this investigation, we find that the color changes of limb-darkened extended source events (color curves) have dramatically different characteristics depending on whether the lens transits the source star or not. We show that for a source transit event, the lens proper motion can be determined by simply measuring the turning time of the color curve instead of fitting the overall color or light curves. We also find that even for a very small fraction of blended light, the color changes induced by the blending effect is equivalent to those caused by the limb-darkening effect, causing serious distortion in the observed color curve. Therefore, to obtain useful information about the lens and source star from the color curve of a limb-darkened extended source event, it will be essential to eliminate or correct for the blending effect. We discuss about the methods for the efficient correction of the blending effect.

Abstract:In this review article, we discuss the current status and future prospects of perturbation theory as a means of studying the equilibrium thermodynamic and near-equilibrium transport properties of deconfined QCD matter. We begin with a brief introduction to the general topic, after which we review in some detail the foundations and modern techniques of the real- and imaginary-time formalisms of thermal field theory, covering e.g. the different bases used in the real-time formalism and the resummations required to deal with soft and collinear contributions. After this, we discuss the current status of applications of these techniques, including topics such as electromagnetic rates, transport coefficients, jet quenching, heavy quarks and quarkonia, and the Equations of State of hot quark-gluon plasma as well as cold and dense quark matter. Finally, we conclude with our view of the future directions of the field, i.e. how we anticipate perturbative calculations to contribute to our collective understanding of strongly interacting matter in the coming years.

Abstract:Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is the fundamental theory of strong interactions. It describes the behavior of quarks and gluons which are the smallest known constituents of nuclear matter. The difficulties in solving the theory at low energies in the strongly interacting, non-perturbative regime have left unanswered many important questions in QCD, such as the nature of confinement or the mechanism of hadronization. In these lectures oriented towards the students we introduce two classes of dualities that attempt to reproduce many of the features of QCD, while making the treatment at strong coupling more tractable: (1) the AdS/CFT correspondence between a specific class of string theories and a conformal field theory and (2) an effective low-energy theory of QCD dual to classical QCD on a curved conformal gravitational background. The hope is that by applying these dualities to the evaluation of various properties of the strongly-interacting matter produced in heavy ion collisions one can understand how QCD behaves at strong coupling. We give an outline of the applications, with emphasis on two transport coefficients of QCD matter -- shear and bulk viscosities.

Abstract:After a very brief overview recollecting the 'classic' parts of QCD, that is its application to describe hard processes and static properties of hadrons, I survey recent work - some very recent - on QCD at non-zero temperature and density. At finite temperature and zero density there is a compelling theoretical framework allowing us to predict highly specific, non-trivial dependence of the phase structure on the number of flavors and colors. Several aspects have been rigorously, and successfully, tested against massive numerical realizations of the microscopic theory. The theoretical description of high density is nowhere near as mature, but some intriguing possibilities have been put forward. The color/flavor locked state recently proposed for three flavors has many remarkable features connected to its basic symmetry structure, notably including chiral symmetry re-breaking and the existence (unlike for two flavors) of a gauge invariant order parameter. I survey potential applications to heavy ion collisions, astrophysics, and cosmology. A noteworthy possibility is that stellar explosions are powered by release of QCD latent heat. One main goal of physics is to determine the fundamental laws, where "fundamental" is taken in the strict reductionist sense, that is, laws incapable of being derived from other, more universal principles. I believe it is profoundly wrong, however, to portray this as the only goal, or even necessarily as the most important goal. It is as if after playing each note of the piano once each, you were to say "and all the rest is just combinations". True enough - but somehow misleading. In QCD we first played the basic notes twenty-five years ago, and certainly by fifteen years ago it was clear to most reasonable people that there were no more notes to be found. But it would be quite foolish to see this as the end of the subject. Indeed, several interesting, attractive chords have been discovered already, and large parts of the keyboard have barely been touched.

Abstract:Perturbative QCD has made significant progress over the last few decades. In the first part, we present an introductory overview of perturbative QCD as seen from a modern viewpoint. We explain the relation between purely perturbative predictions and predictions based on Wilsonian effective field theories. We also review progress of modern computational technologies and discuss intersection with frontiers of mathematics. Analyses of singularities in Feynman diagrams play key roles towards developing a unified view. In the second part, we discuss application of perturbative QCD, based on the formulation given in the first part, to heavy quarkonium systems and the interquark force between static color charges. We elucidate impacts on order Lambda_QCD physics in the quark mass and interquark force, which used to be considered inaccessible by perturbative QCD.

Abstract:I introduce and explore a range of topics of contemporary interest in hadronic physics: from what drives the formation of a nonzero quark condensate to the effect that mechanism has on light and heavy meson form factors, and the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. The trail leads naturally through a discussion of confinement, dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and bound state structure: phenomena that require nonperturbative methods for their explanation. In all of this, the necessary momentum-dependent modification of the quark and gluon propagators plays a significant role.

Abstract:The real-world properties of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) - the strongly-interacting piece of the Standard Model - are dominated by two emergent phenomena: confinement; namely, the theory's elementary degrees-of-freedom - quarks and gluons - have never been detected in isolation; and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB), which is a remarkably effective mass generating mechanism, responsible for the mass of more than 98% of visible matter in the Universe. These phenomena are not apparent in the formulae that define QCD, yet they play a principal role in determining Nature's observable characteristics. Much remains to be learnt before confinement can properly be understood. On the other hand,the last decade has seen important progress in the use of relativistic quantum field theory, so that we can now explain the origin of DCSB and are beginning to demonstrate its far-reaching consequences. Dyson-Schwinger equations have played a critical role in these advances. These lecture notes provide an introduction to Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs), QCD and hadron physics, and illustrate the use of DSEs to predict phenomena that are truly observable.
