Abstract:The polarization of x-rays plays an outstanding role in experimental techniques such as non-resonant magnetic x-ray scattering and resonant x-ray scattering of magnetic and multipolar order. Different instrumental methods applied to synchrotron light can transform its natural polarization into an arbitrary polarization state. Several synchrotron applications, in particular in the field of magnetic and resonant scattering rely on the improvement in the signal/noise ratio or the deeper insight into the ordered state and the scattering process made possible through these polarization techniques. Here, we present the mathematical framework for the description of fully and partially polarized x-rays, with some applications such as linear x-ray polarization analysis for the determination of the scattered beam's polarization, and the Ge K-edge resonant scattering.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling chirality are important because of its ubiquity in nature. In recent years, we have witnessed the rapid development of chiral metamaterials with exceptional light-manipulating capabilities. Here, we present a design for photonic heterostructures in chiral photonics, demonstrating that photonic heterostructures stacked from achiral metasurfaces can create distinctive chiroptical functionalities. Analyses based on the symmetry group and microscopic dipolar interactions at two-dimensional boundaries reveal the implicit mechanism of the interlayer coupling in photonic heterostructures. By flip stacking, the photonic heterostructure gives rise to an asymmetric chiral phase from achiral composites, and hence, provides the full spin-flipped scattering of incident photons. Incident electromagnetic waves with arbitrary polarization orientations can be efficiently separated into two orthogonal circularly polarized ones with orthogonal trajectories, leading to an ideal circular beam splitter. This effect is experimentally demonstrated at microwave frequencies via the measurement of a scattering matrix. Due to its generality and scalability, we expect the methodology of photonic heterostructure might open up an alternative pathway for exploring intriguing and advanced metamaterials over a broad wavelength range.

Abstract:The behavior of polarization and spin density of polarized light waves propagating inside an anisotropic medium is considered.Differing from the light in an isotropic medium,the polarization states and helicity eigenstates of the light waves will evolve in the anisotropic medium.The evolutional spin densities of both the circularly and the elliptically polarized light waves have been calculated,and the effects relevant to the polarization state evolution have been analyzed.An optical analog of Einstein-de Haas experimental scenario has been suggested in order to test the angular momentum transfer between light waves and anisotropic media.Such evolutional states of light would find potential applications in the field of quantum information.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of underwater polarized laser scattering caused by underwater suspended particles, the equivalent spherical particle Mie scattering theory simulation method is used to study the polarization characteristics of underwater scattered light. The relationship between underwater suspended particle characteristics and optical characteristics is analyzed, and the effects of particle size, polarization characteristics of incident light, and angle of incidence on the degree of polarization of forward and backward scattering light are studied. The results show that: When the incident light is natural light, the degree of polarization of scattered light is very low at the forward-scattering angle, which increases with the increase of the scattering angle, but changes frequently with the increase of the particle size. When the incident light is linearly polarized, the degree of linear polarization of the scattered light is related to the azimuth Angle. The degree of circular polarization is largely unaffected by particle size.

Abstract:In various subdisciplines of optics and photonics, Mie theory has been serving as a fundamental language and playing indispensable roles widely. Conventional studies related to Mie scattering largely focus on local properties such as differential cross sections and angular polarization distributions. Though spatially integrated features of total cross sections in terms of both scattering and absorption are routine for investigations, they are intrinsically dependent on the specific morphologies of both the scattering bodies and the incident waves, consequently manifesting no sign of global invariance. Here, we propose a global Mie scattering theory to explore topological invariants for the characterization of scatterings by any obstacles of arbitrarily structured or polarized coherent light. It is revealed that, independent of distributions and interactions among the scattering bodies of arbitrary geometric and optical parameters, in the far field, inevitably, there are directions where the scatterings are either zero or circularly polarized. Furthermore, for each such singular direction, we can assign a half-integer index and the index sum of all those directions are bounded to be a global topological invariant of 2. The global Mie theory we propose, which is mathematically simple but conceptually penetrating, can render new perspectives for light scattering and topological photonics in both linear and nonlinear regimes and would potentially shed new light on the scattering of acoustic and matter waves of various forms.
Influence of the Complex Refractive Index of Underwater Suspended Particles on the Transmission Characteristics of Polarized Light

Abstract:The effects of different complex refractive indices of underwater suspended particles on the polarization characteristics of forward and backward scattering of polarized photons are analyzed by simulation experiments to study the transmission characteristics of polarized light as influenced by underwater suspended particles. The Mie scattering theory is used to establish the scattering model of underwater photon transmission. The Mueller matrix and Meridian Planes Monte Carlo method are adopted to simulate the process of photon radiation transmission in the scattering medium. Simulation results show that the polarization degree of the scattered linearly polarized light is less affected than the scattered circularly polarized light by the refractive index parameter in the scattering system. As the absorption coefficient increases, the polarization-maintaining ability of the forward scattered linearly polarized light is enhanced, whereas the degree of circular polarization of the backward scattered circularly polarized light is periodically changed.

Abstract:A photonic wheel describes a special structure in which the electric vector spins (with time) in a plane containing the propagation direction, while around a C-point (a point with circular polarization) the polarization Möbius strip can be formed topologically in three-dimensional (3D) space. These two interesting but very different structures are both unique to 3D structured fields, and in this article they are studied together and also their connections are analyzed. By highly confining the trigonometric beams, the three-dimensional (3D) fields with a wide area of photonic wheels are constructed, and the characteristics of the photonic wheels in different regions are analyzed. The expression for the C-lines of the photonic wheels is derived, which provides a simple way to get the exact position of the C-lines and also is a basis for observing polarization Möbius strips. Along a C-line, the behaviors of the polarization Möbius strips, including two typical (generic) Möbius strips with opposite indices, and two special topological events seemingly violating the topological law are examined. Our results show that the trick and the paradox in the two special events actually are the manifestations of the trace-dependent property and the observer-dependent property of the polarization Möbius strips respectively. The finding also suggests that even in a short segment of a C-line rich topological events related to polarization Möbius strips can be observed. Our research provides a way to observe the photonic wheels, the polarization Möbius strips and their connection, also supplies a theoretical foundation for special structures in 3D fields.

Abstract:In most tight focusing systems with the incident wave of unique polarization (including the radial and azimuthal polarization), the polarization along the optical (central) axis (the propagation direction) is found to be uniform. In this paper, we will show that when there is an off-axis vortex in the incident field, the polarization state varies along the central optical axis and the polarization singularities, 'C-points', 'L-points' both can exist on axis. The polarization state is demonstrated to be mainly dependent on two parameters, the initial position of off-axis vortex and the Gouy phase of the axial field. Due to the special property of the Gouy phase, we find that moving the off-axis vortex can vary the polarization without changing its handedness. Especially, it is quite interesting to find that one direction of the linear polarization at the geometrical focus exactly corresponds to one position of the off-axis vortex.
Scattering of Arbitrary-Shaped Optical Polarized Beams by a PEMC Sphere

Abstract:The generalized Lorenz-Mie theory (GLMT) for a laser beam of arbitrary shape illuminating a perfect elec-tromagnetic conductor (PEMC) sphere is presented. Making use of the vector angular spectrum decom-position method (VASDM), and the multipole expansion method (MEM), in which any beam is expressed in terms of vector spherical wave functions (VSWFs) and beam shape coefficients (BSCs), the BSCs are obtained and expressed by a vector angular spectrum. The incident and scattering waves are expanded using VSWFs. A relation between the coefficients of the scattering fields and the BSCs of the incident beam is established considering the appropriate boundary conditions at the surface of the PEMC sphere. Expressions for the extinction, scattering, and absorption cross-sections are derived and computed. By isolating the co-polarization and cross-polarization components of the scattering coefficients, individual expressions of these physical quantities are also provided. Considering the vector Bessel and Airy po-larized beams as examples, the total electric field intensity, scattering cross-section and its co-polarized and cross-polarized components are numerically computed and discussed. The effects of beam polariza-tion, size parameter of the sphere, the admittance M , and beam parameters are analyzed. It has been found that the intensity and distribution of the total (incident + scattered) electric field intensity in the transverse (yz) plane depends on the incident beam characteristics and its polarization states. As the di-mensionless size ka increases, the amplitude of the scattering cross-section increases and then decreases as ka increases. As the admittance parameter M changes, there are different characteristics if the incident beam is different. Nonetheless, there is a common behavior that the trend of the co-polarized component of the scattering cross-section decreases first and then increases regardless of the beam and its polariza-tion state. When it comes to the trend of the cross-polarized component versus M, it is opposite to that of the co-polarized component. A few resonance peaks are manifested in the plots when the incident beam is radially or azimuthally polarized. The results may have promising applications in scattering, par-ticle manipulation, optical trapping, and other related researches dealing with a sphere exhibiting rotary polarization.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Dynamics of Diverse Polarization Singularities in Momentum Space with Far-Field Interference

Abstract:Polarization singularities in momentum space, including bound states in the continuum (BICs) and circularly polarized states (CPSs), render great potential in singular and chiral optics. As far-field topological signatures of Bloch modes in photonic crystal slab, the dynamic evolution of the polarization singularities is observed by tuning the geometric parameters of the slab itself. Here, we combine the photonic crystal slab with a reflected multilayer substrate in which interference between the reflected optical field and the upward radiation of the Bloch mode brings us an extra degree of freedom to manipulate the polarization singularities without breaking the structural symmetry. As the polarization singularities evolve with the spacing between the photonic crystal slab and the substrate, the CPSs and extrinsic BICs are both generated from charge reversal of the at -P intrinsic BIC and then collide with the off -P intrinsic BICs. Importantly, all BICs are topologically protected from splitting throughout the whole dynamic process owing to the preservation of structural symmetry. Our findings suggest an alternative route to pursue ultrahigh -Q CPS resonances and merge diverse BICs, which is potentially applicable in chiral optics, topological photonics, and beam modulation.
Effect of the Incident Polarization on In-Plane and Out-of-plane Spin Splitting Near the Critical Angle.

Abstract:To reveal the effect of the incident polarization on the spin splitting of the photonic spin Hall effect (that is, the spatial and angular in-plane and out-of-plane spin splitting), we systematically study the phenomena and characteristics of these four spin splitting generated when the beam with arbitrary linear polarization is reflected from the non-absorbing medium interface and the absorbing medium interface. Several features of the relationship between the incident polarization and the four kinds of spin splitting are found. In addition, It is also found that the in-plane angular and spatial shifts are significantly enhanced near the critical angle, even reaching their theoretical upper limit. However, the out-of-plane shifts are not enhanced. The research in this paper will contribute to a deeper understanding of PSHE. These findings can also provide new ideas and methods for precision metrology, photonic manipulation, and photonic device fabrication.
Topological Polarization Singularities in Metaphotonics

Abstract:Abstract Polarization singularities of vectorial electromagnetic fields locate at the positions where properties of polarization ellipses are not defined. First observed for conical diffraction in 1830s, polarization singularities have been studied systematically with the underlying concepts being reshaped and deepened by many pioneers of wave optics. Here we review the recent results on the generation and observation of polarization singularities in metaphotonics. We start with the discussion of polarization singularities in the Mie theory, where both electric and magnetic multipoles are explored from perspectives of local and global polarization properties. We then proceed with the discussion of various photonic-crystal structures, for which both near- and far-field patterns manifest diverse polarization singularities characterized by the integer Poincaré or more general half-integer Hopf indices (topological charges). Next, we review the most recent studies of conversions from polarization to phase singularities in scalar wave optics, demonstrating how bound states in the continuum can be exploited to generate directly optical vortices of various charges. Throughout our paper, we discuss and highlight several fundamental concepts and demonstrate their close connections and special links to metaphotonics. We believe polarization singularities can provide novel perspectives for light-matter manipulation for both fundamental studies and their practical applications.

Abstract:Polarization singularities, describing the points where the state of polarization is indeterminate, reveal the polarization topology in vectorial optical fields, which include two-/three-dimensional topologies such as C-points, V-points, L-lines, Möbius strips, links, and knots. Compared with the phase singularities, it has more parameters to manipulate, which bring forth a series of novel optical phenomena and potential applications. In this Perspective, the research progress and development of polarization singularities are reviewed from the mathematical description, generation, detection, propagation dynamics, and related applications. In particular, we focused on the three-dimensional spatial propagation and the topological characteristics of polarization singularities in detail and revealed some basic fundamental physical phenomena and the novel effects of polarization singularities. We aim to touch on the key research studies in this field and provide insight into the current status and the challenges to the research studies. Finally, we outline the exciting prospects for the future that are yet to be realized.

Abstract:In addition to non-radiative guided modes, two-dimensional photonic-crystal slabs support guided resonant ones which can radiate into free space. From the polarization states of these guided resonances, a polarization field on a photonic band can be constructed in momentum space. Momentum-space polarization fields display complicated configurations and patterns with different types of polarization singularities inside, shedding new light on the manipulations of light flows. In this review, we summarize the recent research progress on momentum-space polarization fields and singularities in two-dimensional photonic-crystal slabs, focusing on their unique optical properties and potential applications as well.
Impact of Polarization Phase of Incident Light on In-Plane Spin Splitting of Reflected Beam

Abstract:In this paper, a physical model is established to reveal the relationship between polarization phase of incident light and in-plane spin splitting (IPSS) of reflected beam, and the impact of polarization phase on the IPSS is systematically investigated. Three interesting features of the effect of polarization phase on IPSS were discovered. Furthermore, it is found that the IPSS can be effectively enhanced and suppressed by adjusting the polarization phase near ±π/2. The enhanced IPSS shift can almost reach its upper limit (that is, half of the beam waist) and the suppressed IPSS shift can be reduced to zero. In addition, it is also found that the spin cumulative direction of spin components can be reversed adjusting the polarization phase at ±π/2. These findings not only provide a deeper insight into photonic spin Hall effect, but also open a path for the photon manipulation, precision metrology and the manufacture of photonic spin switching devices.

Magnetic Modulation of Topological Polarization Singularities in Momentum Space

Abstract:The polarization singularities in momentum space, rather than in real space, are capturing interest for active singular optics with exotic light scattering and various topological phenomena, which have potential applications in vortex nano-lasers, valley exciton emission, and others. Here, we propose to magnetically control the polarization singularities in momentum space in the photonic crystal slabs with inversion spatial symmetry (P symmetry). A pair of C points (circular polarization points) with the same topological charge is spawned from a V point (polarization vortex center), and they can be dynamically shifted in momentum space with the variation of the magnetic field. Moreover, the coupling between transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes induced by the magnetic field gives rise to a hybrid mode, which can close certain leaky channels to achieve an accidental V point. Such active manipulation of polarization singularities with magnetic field is promised for various applications in light-matter interactions and reveals novel phenomena and physics in singular optics and topological photonics.

Abstract:For a beam of spin-12 particles with definite momentum, a complete description of the spin state is provided by a single three-space vector, the polarization. This paper shows how the polarization-vector description provides a clear and vivid picture of spin effects in scattering processes. Explicit results are given for three types of interaction with a fixed source in first order: Coulomb, scalar, and pseudoscalar. The effect of a scattering is given by a vector-algebra formula, in which the final polarization is given in terms of the initial polarization and the momenta. In the Coulomb case, for example, the result of the scattering is that the polarization is rotated through an angle β about the normal to the scattering plane, in the same direction that the momentum is rotated. The rotation of the polarization is less than that of the momentum and the lag angle is given by cos(θ−β) = 1 − [(m/E) tan;12θ]21 + [(m/E) tan;12θ]2 where E is the electron energy and θ is the scattering angle.

Abstract:Transverse spin, an intriguing aspect of spin angular momentum, has gained considerable attention in recent years. However, transverse spin is typically accompanied by longitudinal spin in electromagnetic fields. This work aims to generate a series of optical fields with pure transverse spin. We present analytical and numerical demonstrations showing that when multiple linearly polarized plane waves interfere in the same plane, the longitudinal spin vanishes, leaving only the transverse spin, which is perpendicular to both the wave propagation and the inhomogeneous field plane. This transverse spin is demonstrated to be related to the imaginary part of the complex Poynting momentum. Furthermore, we show that pure transverse spin is also observed in the interference of multiple Gaussian beams, offering practical applications in optical field preparation and enhancing our understanding of spin-related physics.
