Abstract:Radiative cooling has the potential to drastically improve a wide range of energy conversion and utilization processes on Earth. However, the lack of tunability may limit its application in practical scenarios such as buildings, vehicles, and textiles. In this paper, we propose a new, to the best of our knowledge, approach to achieve tunable radiative cooling through a stretchable multilayer filter. The cooling power can be continuously modulated by mechanical stretching, which only requires a small amount of energy. This filter can be combined with existing static radiative cooling systems to achieve efficient and continuous regulation of cooling power. (C) 2020 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Higher integration, smaller size, and better performance are the trends of device development. Metasurfaces exhibit the versatile manipulation capabilities on electromagnetic fields and have provided a powerful tool to build compact electromagnetic devices with various complex functions. In this work, we develop one branch of multifunctional metasurface device that not only affects the transmission but also controls the reflected light as well. A coplanar embedded design for the purpose of the metalens and displaying feature, has been specifically investigated, that is, dielectric metalenses embedded within nanorod printed pictures. By tailoring the freedom of polarizations, we show that an animation display can be obtained utilizing a high-quality transmission metalens. The picture can be freely engineered and its influence to the metalens could be effectively controlled. A random element distribution method based on coherent transfer function is introduced to minimize the diffraction effect of the reflection patterns. The simulation results indicate the possibility of interleaving the metalens with a classic display panel in order to enhance the dual performance. This work vastly exposes the advantages of metasurface, which will be helpful in the next exploration of new compact optical devices with integrated multiple functionalities.
Stretchable Metamaterials with Tunable Infrared Emissivity for Dynamic Thermal Management

Abstract:Manipulation of infrared emissivity, which is closely related to surface structure and optical parameters of materials, is a crucial approach for realizing dynamic thermal management. In this study, we design a metamaterial consisting of an array of aluminum disks embedded on a surface of a stretchable elastomeric substrate. Mechanical stretching-induced deformation allows dynamic modification of the surface structure and equivalent optical parameters, thus enabling dynamic control of the emissivity. By utilizing the elastomer polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the substrate, the microstructure interdisk gap can be altered by stretching the PDMS. Through theoretical calculations, the plausibility of this approach is explained by the excitation of plasmon resonance and the variation in the exposed area of highly absorbent PDMS, and the optimal structures for tuning the infrared emissivity are revealed to be 6 μm in diameter and 100 nm in height. Based on this design, we prepare samples with periods of 7 and 7.9 μm and experimentally demonstrate that a change in the period can cause a change in the emissivity and thus tunability in thermal control performance. The temperature difference between the two samples reaches 44.1 °C at a heating power of 0.28 W/cm2 for both samples. Furthermore, we construct a stretching platform that enables in situ mechanical stretching to realize dynamic changes in emissivity. The integral infrared emissivity of the sample increases from 0.32 to 0.5 at a biaxial tensile strain of 13%, achieving a 56% modulation rate of the integral infrared emissivity. The material is expected to enable dynamic thermal management.

Abstract:Tunable three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic metasurfaces are essential for achieving selective modulation of polarized waves, but they usually require complex designs and the use of smart materials, posing great implementation challenges. Here, we propose a novel kirigami-based reconfigurable electromagnetic metasurface, which consists of a kirigami-based deformable thin polyimide substrate and periodically arranged copper split-ring resonators. By simple stretch, the two-dimensional (2D) planar metasurface can be uniformly transformed into a 3D state, enabling it to effectively and selectively modulate linearly and circularly polarized waves. Experimental and numerical results reveal the mechanical deformation and transmission characteristics of the metasurface under applied strains. It is shown that the metasurface exhibits good selective transmission tunability while the resonant frequency remains basically unchanged for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarized waves. Furthermore, the selective tuning mechanism and the influence of geometrical parameters are also illustrated by the equivalent circuit analysis.

Abstract:This article presents a metal-dielectric hybrid structure, namely a hexagonal periodic structure formed by self-assembly silica microsphere deposited on thin metal film substrate. Theoretical simulation and experimental results indicate that this structure can achieve strong (greater than 90 %) and broad absorption at atmospheric transparency window from 8 to 13μm.

Abstract:This paper reports a flexible and stretchable metamaterial-based "skin" or meta-skin with tunable frequency selective and cloaking effects in microwave frequency regime. The meta-skin is composed of an array of liquid metallic split ring resonators (SRRs) embedded in a stretchable elastomer. When stretched, the meta-skin performs as a tunable frequency selective surface with a wide resonance frequency tuning range. When wrapped around a curved dielectric material, the meta-skin functions as a flexible "cloaking" surface to significantly suppress scattering from the surface of the dielectric material along different directions. We studied frequency responses of multilayer meta-skins to stretching in a planar direction and to changing the spacing between neighboring layers in vertical direction. We also investigated scattering suppression effect of the meta-skin coated on a finite-length dielectric rod in free space. This meta-skin technology will benefit many electromagnetic applications, such as frequency tuning, shielding, and scattering suppression.

Abstract:Although current 2D metasurfaces have emerged as a paradigm platform for electromagnetic (EM) manipulation with enhanced and flexible functions over conventional optical components, their performance is intrinsically limited by constrained interaction with the EM waves due to reduced dimensions. Besides, fabrication of 2D metasurfaces over large areas remains complex and high cost especially in the visible spectrum, further limiting their practical applications. Here, a kind of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) 2.5D metasurfaces is proposed with enriched EM manipulation capabilities in both near-field and far-field compared with their planar counterparts. Moreover, wafer-scale fabrication with high uniformity is also realized by a lithography-free method. As a proof of concept, we experimentally demonstrate three kinds of centimeter-scale metadevices achieving broadband EM absorption (average absorption over 91% within 400-1200 nm), structural color display (coverage of the primary colors red, green and blue (RGB)) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (largest enhancement factor of 3.29 x 10(7) and relative standard deviation less than 9%), respectively. It is envisioned that the proposed 2.5D metasurfaces may empower many potential applications in EM absorption, sensing and optical displays.

Abstract:Microwave-invisible devices are emerging as a valuable technology in various applications, including soft robotics, shape-morphing structures, and textural camouflages, especially in electronic countermeasures. Unfortunately, conventional microwave-absorbing metastructures and bulk absorbers are stretching confined, limiting their application in deformable or special-shaped targets. To overcome such limitations, a conceptually novel soft–rigid-connection strategy, inspired by the pangolin, is proposed. Pangolin-inspired metascale (PIMS), which is a kind of stretchable metamaterial consisting of an electromagnetic dissipative scale (EMD-scale) and elastomer, is rationally designed. Such a device exhibits robust microwave-absorbing capacity under the interference of 50% stretching. Besides, profiting from the covering effect and size-confined effect of EMD-scale, the out-of-plane indentation failure force of PIMS is at least 5 times larger than conventional device. As a proof of concept, the proposed device is conformally pasted on nondevelopable surfaces. For a spherical dome surface, the maximum radar cross-section (RCS) reduction of PIMS is 6.3 dB larger than that of a conventional device, while for a saddle surface, the bandwidth of 10 dB RCS reduction exhibits an increase of 83%. In short, this work provides a conceptually novel platform to develop stretchable, nondevelopable surface conformable functional devices.

Abstract:Advanced electromagnetic functional materials are more and more inclined to integrated design, for instance the compatibility in different spectra as well as wide temperature ranges. Metasurface provides an effective solution for multi-spectrum compatible design owning to its extraordinary performance. In this work, we propose a high-temperature flexible metasurface framework, which can simultaneously realize microwave polarization rotation and low infrared emissivity. As verification, a high-temperature resistant multi-spectrum compatible flexible metasurface is fabricated and measured, which can availably work up to 300 °C. For microwaves, the metasurface achieves the orthogonal polarization rotation efficiency of more than 90% in 5.2–7.5 GHz. For infrared, the metallic filling ratio of 84.42% is constructed by designing the metasurface pattern, thus reducing the infrared emissivity to 0.22 in 3–14 μm. This work provides a flexible metasurface framework for implementing multi-spectrum compatibility at high temperatures, which can be easily attached to the surface of high-temperature components and extended to more functional integration.

Abstract:The rising need for energy to actively heat and cool human-made structures is contributing to the growing energy crisis and intensifying global warming. Consequently, there's a pressing need for a sustainable approach to temperature management that minimizes energy consumption and carbon emissions. The substantial temperature differences between the Sun (approximately 5800 K), Earth (around 300 K), and outer space (about 3 K) offer a unique opportunity for passive thermal regulation on a global scale. Recent research indicates the possibility of addressing this issue through various low-carbon, passive technologies such as solar heating and radiative cooling. However, their practical application is often limited to certain seasons and climatic regions due to their static and single-function nature in managing temperature. In this context, we introduce a concept of phase-change metamaterials that provide passive, dynamic, and adjustable radiative thermal control, suitable for widespread engineering applications. Our designed metafilm comprises a Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer infused with vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanoparticles, backed by a layer of broadband-reflective silver (Ag). This metafilm exhibits a self-adjusting solar absorptance, shifting from 0.96 to 0.25 at a pivotal temperature while maintaining a nearly constant thermal emittance. We can finely tune the metafilm's optical characteristics by altering the VO2 nanoparticle concentration and PDMS layer thickness. To demonstrate its efficacy in solar thermal management and radiative cooling, we simulate its temperature behavior under various weather conditions.

Abstract:A radiation‐type programmable metasurface is presented for dynamic modulation of radiant electromagnetic wave. In contrast to high profile and low efficiency in conventional programmable metasurfaces, the proposed design perfectly combines the functions of 1‐bit phase shifter and efficient power radiator in a single unit framework, which significantly improve the aperture efficiency and reduce the overall profile. Programmable metasurfaces enable fine‐grained real‐time modulation over electromagnetic (EM) waves in a digital manner, which have gained remarkable attention in antenna engineering and wireless communications. However, either a reflective or transmissive programmable metasurface requires an external feed source with significant distance to the metasurface, making the whole programmable device a relatively high profile as well as low efficiency as a result of the feed spillover losses. In this paper, an innovative design of radiation‐type programmable metasurface for dynamic modulation of radiant EM wave is presented, which perfectly combines the functions of 1‐bit phase shifter and efficient power radiator in the single unit framework. By employing the integrated series‐parallel hybrid microstrip network to stimulate the topside metasurface units, versatile capacities, including dynamic beam scanning and multimode vortex beam generation, are verified both numerically and experimentally. Due to the direct‐radiation characteristic of the metasurface design, the programmable metasurface possesses the aperture efficiency over 30% and a low profile reduced by almost two orders of magnitude, when comparing with the conventional reflective or transmissive programmable metasurfaces illuminated by the external feeds. The proposed design can offer a novel approach of programmable metasurface framework in dynamic radiant EM modulation for low‐profile conformal applications.

Abstract:The combination of daytime radiative cooling and solar heating can regulate the temperature of buildings in all seasons, which is vital to achieving energy savings. However, achieving a dynamic and efficient switch between radiative cooling and solar heating states is still challenging. The reversible metal electrodeposition is a promising electrochromic technology that can dynamically manipulate the visible and infrared spectrum by depositing a nanoscale metal layer. By combining it with the delicate nanostructure design, reconfigurable daytime radiative cooling and solar heating states can be achieve. In this work, a metamaterial electrochromic device capable of efficiently switching between high solar reflectance (91.73%) and high solar absorptance (95.41%) via reversible silver layer electrodeposition has been developed. This device consists of a top layer, which is a visible transparent electrode of indium tin oxide (ITO) covered with an ultrathin platinum (Pt) film, an electrolyte in the middle, and a metamaterial absorber based on multiple metallic and dielectric layers at the bottom. Afterwards, we analyze the spectrum of each part of the device and carry out a parametric study on the energy power with different ambient temperatures and convective heat transfer coefficients. The average solar reflectance of the device in the radiative cooling state is 93.41% within the range of 0.3-2.5 μm. In the solar heating mode, the average solar absorptance of the device reaches 95.46%. Numerical simulation shows the device in the cooling mode achieves a temperature drop of 5-9.8°C and an average cooling power of 140.8 W/m^2. The device in heating mode achieves a maximum temperature rise of 45 °C and a maximum heating power of 700 W/m^2. This work provides a feasible design for solar heating and daytime radiative cooling switching devices, which is promising in applications like energy-saving buildings, wearable devices, electric vehicles and other outdoors facilities.

Abstract:Passive radiative cooling drawing the heat energy of objects to the cold outer space through the atmospheric transparent window (8 um - 13 um) is significant for reducing the energy consumption of buildings. Daytime and nighttime radiative cooling have been extensively investigated in the past. However, radiative cooling which can continuously regulate its cooling temperature, like a valve, according to human need is rarely reported. In this study, we present a concept of reconfigurable photonic structure for the adaptive radiative cooling by continuously varying the emission spectra in the atmospheric window region. This is realized by the deformation of the one-dimensional PDMS grating and the nanoparticles embedded PDMS thin film when subjected to mechanical strain. The proposed structure reaches different stagnation temperatures under certain strains. A dynamic exchange between two different strains results in the fluctuation of the photonic structure's temperature around a set temperature.

Abstract:Passive radiative cooling is currently the frontier technology in renewable-energy research. In terms of extraterrestrial applications, radiative cooling is a critical component to the thermal management system of a spacecraft, where the extreme environment of space can cause large temperature variations that can break and damage equipment. For terrestrial applications, nocturnal or daytime radiative cooling is expected to lead to cost-effective passive heat management without the need of inefficient and costly artificial refrigeration technologies. However, most currently available radiative cooling systems cannot be changed dynamically and radiate a constant static amount of thermal power. Dynamically tunable adaptive radiative cooling systems will be a critical development to prolong the lifetime of spacecraft or improve the efficiency of terrestrial cooling systems. Here we propose stretchable radiative cooling designs that can be substantially tuned by using the simple physical mechanism of mechanical strain. When their structure is stretched, the radiated power is significantly reduced. We develop a modeling method that can simulate mechanical stretching combined with electromagnetic response to compute the tunable thermal emission of these new adaptive radiative cooling systems. The presented photonically engineered structures can be used as coatings to achieve efficient adaptive thermal control of various objects in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way. The proposed designs are much simpler to be realized than others found in the literature and the best design achieves a high thermal emission power with a tunable range on the order of 132 W/m2.

Zhai et al. solve this riddle by constructing a metamaterial composed of a polymer layer embedded with microspheres, backed with a thin layer of silver (see the Perspective by Zhang). Abstract:Metasurfaces have recently gained significant attention due to the strong capacity in light field manipulation. However, most traditional metasurfaces are fabricated on rigid substrates, which fix their functionality after fabrication and limit their applications in dynamic measurement fields. In this work, we designed and fabricated a silver metasurface embedded in a stretchable substrate for sensing applications. This metasurface can generate different point cloud patterns under varying stretch ratios when illuminated by a laser beam. By collecting and analyzing the patterns, we can precisely reconstruct the deformation of the metasurface. Furthermore, the sample exhibits excellent performance under incident light of various wavelengths. These results pave the way for developing microdevices with novel capabilities based on flexible metamaterials.

Abstract:Metasurfaces, which are usually passive or non-radiating, have provided unprecedented degree of freedom especially for scattering manipulation. For the manipulating radiation, metasurfaces often serve as auxiliaries to radiators since they cannot radiate themselves. Thus, it is unfavorable for integration and miniaturization. In this work, we propose the concept of active-passive compound metasurface (APCM) and explore the possibility of utilizing meta-atoms as active radiators, so as to simultaneously achieve flexible radiation and scattering manipulations at the same time. To this end, a meta-atom structure with large reflection phase-span is delicately designed. In this way, the meta-atom can serve both as wideband radiator fed by a probe and reflection-phase modulator. Flexible scattering-pattern manipulation for one polarization state and high-efficiency radiation-pattern manipulation for the orthogonal polarization state can be simultaneously achieved within the same band from 8.0 to 12.0GHz. As a proof of concept, two prototypes, one for scattering-cancellation and high-directive radiation while the other for deflected reflection and vortex-beam radiation, were designed, fabricated, and measured, respectively. Both the simulated and measured results verify the active-passive compound design. This work paves an alternative route to integrated multi-functional materials or interfaces and may find wide applications in next-generation communication, radar, smart skin, and others.

Abstract:To summarize, an ultra‐elastic metafabric mainly consists of SEBS/F127/Al2O3 microfibers are made by roll‐to‐roll electrospinning and coupling reaction‐assisted dip‐coating technology and used as personal thermal wet management. The cost‐effectiveness and high performance of the metafabric present substantial advantages for intelligent garments, Janus wettability, and passive radiative cooling applications. Incorporating zero‐energy‐input cooling technology into personal thermal management (PTM) systems is a promising solution for preventing heat‐related illnesses while reducing energy consumption. Although concepts for passive radiative cooling materials are proposed, achieving subambient cooling performance while providing good wearing comfort remains a challenge. Here, a moisture‐wicking nonwoven metafabric is reported that assembles radiative cooling and evaporative heat dissipation to achieve high‐performance thermal and moisture comfort management. This metafabric demonstrates excellent spectral‐selectivity (sunlight reflection of ≈92%, atmospheric window thermal emissivity of ≈97%) and Janus wettability through large‐scale electrospinning and hierarchical design, and also inherits superior elasticity, air/moisture permeability of nonwoven fabric. Subambient temperature drops of ≈6.5 °C (≈750 W m−2 solar intensity) for stand‐alone metafabric are observed. Thanks to the moisture‐wicking effect (water evaporation rate of 0.31 g h−1 and water transport index of 1220%) of metafabric that enables fast evaporation of sweat, a maximum generation of 1 mL h−1 of sweat can cool the skin, thus reducing the excessive sweating risk after intense exercise. Additionally, the cooling performance of metafabric can be regulated by applying various strains (0–100%). The cost‐efficiency and good wearability of metafabric provide an innovative way to sustainable energy, smart textiles, and thermal wet comfort applications.

Abstract:Metasurface is a new kind of 2D metamaterial that is able to manage a variety of light beam modulations through steering the phase of the scattering waves. In this work, we utilize the metasurface to manipulate the light beam in the mid-infrared regime. By using the metallic rod and the plate structure, the metasurface presents a high polarization conversion efficiency and a wide working bandwidth. With specially rotated metallic rods, the metasurface can realize various light beam manipulations, such as negative reflection, beam collimation, and focusing. All of these results show that such a metasurface will have potential applications in future mid-infrared optics.
