Abstract:In this paper, we investigate two variants of the secretary problem. In these variants, we are presented with a sequence of numbers $X_i$ that come from distributions $\mathcal{D}_i$, and that arrive in either random or adversarial order. We do not know what the distributions are, but we have access to a single sample $Y_i$ from each distribution $\mathcal{D}_i$. After observing each number, we have to make an irrevocable decision about whether we would like to accept it or not with the goal of maximizing the probability of selecting the largest number. The random order version of this problem was first studied by Correa et al. [SODA 2020] who managed to construct an algorithm that achieves a probability of $0.4529$. In this paper, we improve this probability to $0.5009$, almost matching an upper bound of $\simeq 0.5024$ which we show follows from earlier work. We also show that there is an algorithm which achieves the probability of $\simeq 0.5024$ asymptotically if no particular distribution is especially likely to yield the largest number. For the adversarial order version of the problem, we show that we can select the maximum number with a probability of $1/4$, and that this is best possible. Our work demonstrates that unlike in the case of the expected value objective studied by Rubinstein et al. [ITCS 2020], knowledge of a single sample is not enough to recover the factor of success guaranteed by full knowledge of the distribution.

Abstract:We solve the secretary problem in the case that the ranked items arrive in a statistically biased order rather than in uniformly random order. The bias is given by the left-to-right-minimum exponentially tilted distribution with parameter $q\in(0,\infty)$. That is, for $\sigma\in S_n$, $P_n(\sigma)$ is proportional to $q^{\text{LR}^{-}_n(\sigma)}$, where the left-to-right minimum statistic $\text{LR}^-_n$ is defined by $$ \text{LR}^{-}_n(\sigma)=|\{j\in[n]: \sigma_j=\min\{\sigma_i:1\le i\le j\}\}|,\ \sigma\in S_n. $$ For $q\in(0,1)$, higher ranked items tend to arrive earlier than in the case of the uniform distribution, and for $q\in(1,\infty)$, they tend to arrive later. In the classical problem, the asymptotically optimal strategy is to reject the first $M_n^*$ items, where $M_n^*\sim\frac ne$, and then to select the first item ranked higher than any of the first $M_n^*$ items (if such an item exists). This yields $e^{-1}$ as the limiting probability of success. With the above bias on arrivals, we calculate the asymptotic behavior of the optimal strategy $M_n^*$ and the corresponding limiting probability of success, for all regimes of $\{q_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$. In particular, if the leading order asymptotic behavior of $\{q_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$ is at least $\frac1{\log n}$, and if also its order is no more than $o(n)$, then the limiting probability of success when using an asymptotically optimal strategy is $e^{-1}$; otherwise, this limiting probability of success is greater than $e^{-1}$. Also, the limiting fraction of numbers, $\lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{M^*_n}n$, that are summarily rejected by an asymptotically optimal strategy lies in $(0,1)$ if and only if $\lim_{n\to\infty}q_n\in(0,\infty)$.

On a Competitive Secretary Problem with Deferred Selections

Abstract:We study secretary problems in settings with multiple agents. In the standard secretary problem, a sequence of arbitrary awards arrive online, in a random order, and a single decision maker makes an immediate and irrevocable decision whether to accept each award upon its arrival. The requirement to make immediate decisions arises in many cases due to an implicit assumption regarding competition. Namely, if the decision maker does not take the offered award immediately, it will be taken by someone else. The novelty in this paper is in introducing a multi-agent model in which the competition is endogenous. In our model, multiple agents compete over the arriving awards, but the decisions need not be immediate; instead, agents may select previous awards as long as they are available (i.e., not taken by another agent). If an award is selected by multiple agents, ties are broken either randomly or according to a global ranking. This induces a multi-agent game in which the time of selection is not enforced by the rules of the games, rather it is an important component of the agent's strategy. We study the structure and performance of equilibria in this game. For random tie breaking, we characterize the equilibria of the game, and show that the expected social welfare in equilibrium is nearly optimal, despite competition among the agents. For ranked tie breaking, we give a full characterization of equilibria in the 3-agent game, and show that as the number of agents grows, the winning probability of every agent under non-immediate selections approaches her winning probability under immediate selections.

Abstract:In the online random-arrival model, an algorithm receives a sequence of n requests that arrive in a random order. The algorithm is expected to make an irrevocable decision with regard to each request based only on the observed history. We consider the following natural extension of this model: each request arrives k times, and the arrival order is a random permutation of the kn arrivals; the algorithm is expected to make a decision regarding each request only upon its last arrival. We focus primarily on the case when k=2, which can also be interpreted as each request arriving at, and departing from the system, at a random time. We examine the secretary problem: the problem of selecting the best secretary when the secretaries are presented online according to a random permutation. We show that when each secretary arrives twice, we can achieve a competitive ratio of ~0.768 (compared to 1/e in the classical secretary problem), and that it is optimal. We also show that without any knowledge about the number of secretaries or their arrival times, we can still hire the best secretary with probability at least 2/3, in contrast to the impossibility of achieving a constant success probability in the classical setting. We extend our results to the matroid secretary problem, introduced by Babaioff et al., (2007) and show a simple algorithm that achieves a 2-approximation to the maximal weighted basis in the new model (for k=2). We show that this approximation factor can be improved in special cases of the matroid secretary problem; in particular, we give a 16/9-competitive algorithm for the returning edge-weighted bipartite matching problem.

Abstract:In the classical secretary problem, multiple secretaries arrive one at a time to compete for a single position, and the goal is to choose the best secretary to the job while knowing the candidate's quality only with respect to the preceding candidates. In this paper we define and study a new variant of the secretary problem, in which there are multiple jobs. The applicants are ranked relatively upon arrival as usual, and, in addition, we assume that the jobs are also ranked. The main conceptual novelty in our model is that we evaluate a matching using the notion of blocking pairs from Gale and Shapley's stable matching theory. Specifically, our goal is to maximize the number of matched jobs (or applicants) that do not take part in a blocking pair. We study the cases where applicants arrive randomly or in adversarial order, and provide upper and lower bounds on the quality of the possible assignment assuming all jobs and applicants are totally ordered. Among other results, we show that when arrival is uniformly random, a constant fraction of the jobs can be satisfied in expectation, or a constant fraction of the applicants, but not a constant fraction of the matched pairs.

Abstract:We show that the matroid secretary problem is equivalent to correlated contention resolution in the online random-order model. Specifically, the matroid secretary conjecture is true if and only if every matroid admits an online random-order contention resolution scheme which, given an arbitrary (possibly correlated) prior distribution over subsets of the ground set, matches the balance ratio of the best offline scheme for that distribution up to a constant. We refer to such a scheme as universal. Our result indicates that the core challenge of the matroid secretary problem lies in resolving contention for positively correlated inputs, in particular when the positive correlation is benign in as much as offline contention resolution is concerned. Our result builds on our previous work which establishes one direction of this equivalence, namely that the secretary conjecture implies universal random-order contention resolution, as well as a weak converse, which derives a matroid secretary algorithm from a random-order contention resolution scheme with only partial knowledge of the distribution. It is this weak converse that we strengthen in this paper: We show that universal random-order contention resolution for matroids, in the usual setting of a fully known prior distribution, suffices to resolve the matroid secretary conjecture in the affirmative. Our proof is the composition of three reductions. First, we use duality arguments to reduce the matroid secretary problem to the matroid prophet secretary problem with arbitrarily correlated distributions. Second, we introduce a generalization of contention resolution we term labeled contention resolution, to which we reduce the correlated matroid prophet secretary problem. Finally, we combine duplication of elements with limiting arguments to reduce labeled contention resolution to classical contention resolution.
Robust Algorithms for the Secretary Problem

Abstract:In classical secretary problems, a sequence of $n$ elements arrive in a uniformly random order, and we want to choose a single item, or a set of size $K$. The random order model allows us to escape from the strong lower bounds for the adversarial order setting, and excellent algorithms are known in this setting. However, one worrying aspect of these results is that the algorithms overfit to the model: they are not very robust. Indeed, if a few "outlier" arrivals are adversarially placed in the arrival sequence, the algorithms perform poorly. E.g., Dynkin's popular $1/e$-secretary algorithm fails with even a single adversarial arrival. We investigate a robust version of the secretary problem. In the Byzantine Secretary model, we have two kinds of elements: green (good) and red (rogue). The values of all elements are chosen by the adversary. The green elements arrive at times uniformly randomly drawn from $[0,1]$. The red elements, however, arrive at adversarially chosen times. Naturally, the algorithm does not see these colors: how well can it solve secretary problems? We give algorithms which get value comparable to the value of the optimal green set minus the largest green item. Specifically, we give an algorithm to pick $K$ elements that gets within $(1-\varepsilon)$ factor of the above benchmark, as long as $K \geq \mathrm{poly}(\varepsilon^{-1} \log n)$. We extend this to the knapsack secretary problem, for large knapsack size $K$. For the single-item case, an analogous benchmark is the value of the second-largest green item. For value-maximization, we give a $\mathrm{poly} \log^* n$-competitive algorithm, using a multi-layered bucketing scheme that adaptively refines our estimates of second-max over time. For probability-maximization, we show the existence of a good randomized algorithm, using the minimax principle.

A combinatorial proof for the secretary problem with multiple choices

Abstract:The Secretary problem is a classical sequential decision-making question that can be succinctly described as follows: a set of rank-ordered applicants are interviewed sequentially for a single position. Once an applicant is interviewed, an immediate and irrevocable decision is made if the person is to be offered the job or not and only applicants observed so far can be used in the decision process. The problem of interest is to identify the stopping rule that maximizes the probability of hiring the highest-ranked applicant. A multiple-choice version of the Secretary problem, known as the Dowry problem, assumes that one is given a fixed integer budget for the total number of selections allowed to choose the best applicant. It has been solved using tools from dynamic programming and optimal stopping theory. We provide the first combinatorial proof for a related new \emph{query-based model} for which we are allowed to solicit the response of an expert to determine if an applicant is optimal. Since the selection criteria differ from those of the Dowry problem we obtain nonidentical expected stopping times. Our result indicates that an optimal strategy is the $(a_s, a_{s-1}, \ldots, a_1)$-strategy, i.e., for the $i^{th}$ selection, where $1 \le i \le s$ and $1 \le j = s+1-i \le s$, we reject the first $a_j$ applicants, wait until the decision of the $(i-1)^{th}$ selection (if $i \ge 2$), and then accept the next applicant whose qualification is better than all previously appeared applicants. Furthermore, our optimal strategy is right-hand based, i.e., the optimal strategies for two models with $s_1$ and $s_2$ selections in total ($s_1 < s_2$) share the same sequence $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_{s_1}$ when it is viewed from the right. When the total number of applicants tends to infinity, our result agrees with the thresholds obtained by Gilbert and Mosteller.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the so-called Multi-returning secretary problem, a version of the Secretary problem in which each candidate has m identical copies. The case m=2 has already been completely solved by several authors using different methods, but the case m>2 had not been satisfactorily solved yet. Here, under the conjecture of certain (very likely true) uniform convergence results, we provide an efficient algorithm to compute the optimal threshold and the probability of success for every m. Moreover, we give a method to determine their asymptotic values based on the solution of a system of m ODEs.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Volume 53, Issue 6, Page 1641-1662, December 2024. The secretary and the prophet inequality problems are central to the field of stopping theory. Recently, there has been a lot of work in generalizing these models to multiple items because of their applications in mechanism design. The most important of these generalizations are to matroids and to combinatorial auctions. Kleinberg and Weinberg and Feldman, Gravin, and Lucier show that for adversarial arrival order of random variables the optimal prophet inequalities give a [math]-approximation. For many settings, however, it is conceivable that the arrival order is chosen uniformly at random, akin to the secretary problem. For such a random arrival model, we improve upon the [math]-approximation and obtain [math]-approximation prophet inequalities for both matroids and combinatorial auctions. This also gives improvements to the results of Yan and of Esfandiari and colleagues who worked in the special cases where either we can fully control the arrival order or there is only a single item. Our techniques are threshold based. We convert our discrete problem into a continuous setting and then give a generic template on how to dynamically adjust these thresholds to lower bound the expected total welfare.

Abstract:We study the submodular secretary problem with a cardinality constraint. In this problem, $n$ candidates for secretaries appear sequentially in random order. At the arrival of each candidate, a decision maker must irrevocably decide whether to hire him. The decision maker aims to hire at most $k$ candidates that maximize a non-negative submodular set function. We propose an $(\mathrm{e} - 1)^2 / (\mathrm{e}^2 (1 + \mathrm{e}))$-competitive algorithm for this problem, which improves the best one known so far.

Abstract:In this paper we revisit the basic variant of the classical secretary problem. We propose a new approach in which we separate between an agent that evaluates the secretary performance and one that has to make the hiring decision. The evaluating agent (the sender) signals the quality of the candidate to the hiring agent (the receiver) who must make a decision. Whenever the two agents' interests are not fully aligned, this induces an information transmission (signaling) challenge for the sender. We study the sender's optimization problem subject to persuasiveness constraints of the receiver for several variants of the problem. Our results quantify the loss in performance for the sender due to online arrival. We provide optimal and near-optimal persuasive mechanisms that recover at least a constant fraction of a natural utility benchmark for the sender. The separation of evaluation and decision making can have a substantial impact on the approximation results. While in some scenarios, techniques and results closely mirror the conditions in the standard secretary problem, we also explore conditions that lead to very different characteristics.

Abstract:The secretary problem is probably the purest model of decision making under uncertainty. In this paper, we ask which advice we can give the algorithm to improve its success probability. We propose a general model that unifies a broad range of problems: from the classic secretary problem with no advice to the variant where the quality of a secretary is drawn from a known distribution and the algorithm learns each candidate’s quality on arrival, more modern versions of advice in the form of samples, and a machine-learning inspired model where a classifier gives us a noisy signal about whether the current secretary is the best on the market. Our main technique is a factor-revealing linear program (LP) that captures all of these problems. We use this LP formulation to gain structural insight into the optimal policy. Using tools from linear programming, we present a tight analysis of optimal algorithms for secretaries with samples, optimal algorithms when secretaries’ qualities are drawn from a known distribution, and optimal algorithms for a new noisy binary advice model.

The Secretary Problem with Predicted Additive Gap

Abstract:The secretary problem is one of the fundamental problems in online decision making; a tight competitive ratio for this problem of $1/\mathrm{e} \approx 0.368$ has been known since the 1960s. Much more recently, the study of algorithms with predictions was introduced: The algorithm is equipped with a (possibly erroneous) additional piece of information upfront which can be used to improve the algorithm's performance. Complementing previous work on secretary problems with prior knowledge, we tackle the following question: What is the weakest piece of information that allows us to break the $1/\mathrm{e}$ barrier? To this end, we introduce the secretary problem with predicted additive gap. As in the classical problem, weights are fixed by an adversary and elements appear in random order. In contrast to previous variants of predictions, our algorithm only has access to a much weaker piece of information: an \emph{additive gap} $c$. This gap is the difference between the highest and $k$-th highest weight in the sequence. Unlike previous pieces of advice, knowing an exact additive gap does not make the problem trivial. Our contribution is twofold. First, we show that for any index $k$ and any gap $c$, we can obtain a competitive ratio of $0.4$ when knowing the exact gap (even if we do not know $k$), hence beating the prevalent bound for the classical problem by a constant. Second, a slightly modified version of our algorithm allows to prove standard robustness-consistency properties as well as improved guarantees when knowing a range for the error of the prediction.

Combinatorial Secretary Problems with Ordinal Information

Abstract:The secretary problem is a classic model for online decision making. Recently, combinatorial extensions such as matroid or matching secretary problems have become an important tool to study algorithmic problems in dynamic markets. Here the decision maker must know the numerical value of each arriving element, which can be a demanding informational assumption. In this paper, we initiate the study of combinatorial secretary problems with ordinal information, in which the decision maker only needs to be aware of a preference order consistent with the values of arrived elements. The goal is to design online algorithms with small competitive ratios. For a variety of combinatorial problems, such as bipartite matching, general packing LPs, and independent set with bounded local independence number, we design new algorithms that obtain constant competitive ratios. For the matroid secretary problem, we observe that many existing algorithms for special matroid structures maintain their competitive ratios even in the ordinal model. In these cases, the restriction to ordinal information does not represent any additional obstacle. Moreover, we show that ordinal variants of the submodular matroid secretary problems can be solved using algorithms for the linear versions by extending [Feldman and Zenklusen, 2015]. In contrast, we provide a lower bound of $\Omega(\sqrt{n}/(\log n))$ for algorithms that are oblivious to the matroid structure, where $n$ is the total number of elements. This contrasts an upper bound of $O(\log n)$ in the cardinal model, and it shows that the technique of thresholding is not sufficient for good algorithms in the ordinal model.

Abstract:Contention resolution schemes have proven to be a useful and unifying abstraction for a variety of constrained optimization problems, in both offline and online arrival models. Much of prior work restricts attention to product distributions for the input set of elements, and studies contention resolution for increasingly general packing constraints, both offline and online. In this paper, we instead focus on generalizing the input distribution, restricting attention to matroid constraints in both the offline and online random arrival models. In particular, we study contention resolution when the input set is arbitrarily distributed, and may exhibit positive and/or negative correlations between elements. We characterize the distributions for which offline contention resolution is possible, and establish some of their basic closure properties. Our characterization can be interpreted as a distributional generalization of the matroid covering theorem. For the online random arrival model, we show that contention resolution is intimately tied to the secretary problem via two results. First, we show that a competitive algorithm for the matroid secretary problem implies that online contention resolution is essentially as powerful as offline contention resolution for matroids, so long as the algorithm is given the input distribution. Second, we reduce the matroid secretary problem to the design of an online contention resolution scheme of a particular form.

In particular, we improve the size of shortlist used in \cite{us} from $O(k 2^{poly(1/\epsilon)})$ to $O(k poly(1/\epsilon))$. As a result, we provide a near optimal approximation algorithm for random-order streaming of monotone submodular functions under cardinality constraints, using memory $O(k poly(1/\epsilon))$. It exponentially improves the running time and memory of \cite{us} in terms of $1/\epsilon$. Next we generalize the problem to matroid constraints, which we refer to as submodular matroid secretary problem with shortlists. It is a variant of the \textit{matroid secretary problem} \cite{feldman2014simple}, in which the algorithm is allowed to have a shortlist. We design an algorithm that achieves a $\frac{1}{2}(1-1/e^2 -\epsilon)$ competitive ratio for any constant $\epsilon>0$, using a shortlist of size $O(k poly(\frac{1}{\epsilon}))$. Moreover, we generalize our results to the case of $p$-matchoid constraints and give a $\frac{1}{p+1}(1-1/e^{p+1}-\epsilon )$ approximation using shortlist of size $O(k poly(\frac{1}{\epsilon}))$. It asymptotically approaches the best known offline guarantee $\frac{1}{p+1}$ [22]. Furthermore, we show that our algorithms can be implemented in the streaming setting using $O(k poly(\frac{1}{\epsilon}))$ memory.
