Abstract:This research compares the shapes and patterns of the teapot sets manufactured by a Korean company, Hankook Chinaware, and a German company, Villeroy and Boch. The motivation for this research began in 1997 when I participated in a program sponsored by Villeroy and Boch and the ceramics department of Parsons School of Design, New York City, to celebrate Villeroy and Boch's 250th anniversary. The show was entitled Spirit of the New Millennium, a design project. I learnt that this private pottery business had been successful over a long period of time. The company's research and development of new technologies and materials and improved management methods contributed to this success. Konkuk University, where I teach as a professor, frequently organises field trips to visit the Korean ceramic industries with students. The most representative of these is the Hankook Chinaware Company which is located in Chung-Joo city in the Chung-Cheong province, South Korea. The company has a reputation for production and export. During the field trips, we visit their design studio, automated production line and warehouse. Now the company has become one of the best representatives of the Korean tableware industry. A comparative study reveals useful insights into the different designs and manufacturing techniques, even though both private enterprises have different histories and backgrounds.
