Abstract:In the vanguard of safeguarding data integrity, optical encryption and anti-counterfeiting measures are indispensable. Structural color, with its inherent optical exclusivity, including tunable chromaticity and intricate high-resolution patterning, stands at the forefront of this domain. Despite its promise, the proliferation of structural color technologies in anti-counterfeiting applications is curtailed by the exorbitant production costs and the current limitations in information capacity and security. Addressing these constraints, our study delineates a novel encryption paradigm that interlaces color and digital data within a subwavelength grating matrix. This synergy is fortified by a tri-layered encryption schema, amalgamating electrical response signatures, inherent optical attributes, and the robust RSA algorithm, thereby elevating the information capacity exponentially to 10 n and reinforcing multi-faceted security throughout transmission. Our approach heralds a new era in the realm of high density, secure information storage.

Ionic Microgel Colloidal Crystals: Responsive Chromism in Dual Physical and Chemical Colors for High-End Information Security and Encryption

Abstract:Chromic materials play a decisive and escalating role in information security. However, it is challenging to develop chromic materials for encryption technologies that can hardly be imitated. Inspired by versatile metachrosis in nature, a series of coumarin-based 7-(6-bromohexyloxy)-coumarin microgel colloidal crystals (BrHC MGCC) with multiresponsive chromism are able to be assembled by ionic microgels in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution followed by two cycles of freezing-thawing. The ionic microgels can be finely tailored by in situ quaternization with tunable size under varied temperatures and hydration energies of counterions as well as quenched luminescence under UV irradiation, which endows BrHC MGCC with intriguing chromism in the dual-channel coloration of physical structural color and chemical fluorescent color. Three types of BrHC MGCC exhibit various change ranges in structural coloration and similar quenching in fluorescence emission, which can be utilized for the development of the static-dynamic combined anticounterfeiting system with dual coloration. The information conveyed by the BrHC MGCC array presents dynamic variation versus temperature, while the static information can be only integrally read in both sunlight and a 365 nm UV lamp. The fabrication of a microgel colloidal crystal with dual coloration opens a facile and ecofriendly window for multilevel information security, camouflage, and a cumbersome authentication process.

Abstract:Structural colors based on diamond metasurface are demonstrated by fabricating a periodic array of asymmetric diamond cuboids with high aspect ratio (≈3.1). By optimizing the configuration of diamond‐metasurface system, the color performance is greatly improved with high brightness and a relatively wide gamut (65% of the sRGB). Structural colors based on dielectric metasurfaces are attractive because of their potential application in next‐generation color printing. However, the commonly used dielectric materials suffer from issues of high light absorption (e.g., Si at blue wavelength) and low resistance to corrosion (e.g., titanium oxide), which greatly limit their application as structural color for information encryption. Here, dielectric‐metasurface‐based structural color constructed on nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) film by using bias enhanced nucleation (BEN) technique is demonstrated. Owing to the formation of highly crystalline diamond by the BEN process, the synthesized NCD film with a thickness of ~500 nm exhibits excellent optical quality with a relatively high refractive index that produces a strong magnetic dipole mode by Mie resonance. To realize the dynamic functionalities of diamond‐metasurface color with high resolution, a periodic array of asymmetric diamond cuboids with high aspect ratio (≈3.1) is fabricated, which produces polarization‐dependent response due to the enhanced Mie resonance. By optimizing the configuration of the diamond‐metasurface system, the color performance is improved with high brightness and a relatively wide gamut. This work demonstrates for the first time that NCD can serve as a robust and highly tunable dielectric platform for application in information encryption.

Abstract:Non-iridescent structural colors with wide viewing angles are produced by amorphous photonic structure (APS) and have received increasing attention. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate of non-iridescent, crack-free and functional structural colors, simultaneously. Here, the flexible lamellar nanostructures of graphene oxide (GO) are introduced as a black additive to fabricate amorphous, crack-free structural colors. The color hue and spectral purity of APS film can be easily tuned by adjusting the diameter of spheres and concentration of GO. Furthermore, after reduction treatment, the APS film possesses excellent visibility, flexibility and conductivity, paving the way toward their practical applications in flexible sensors, solar cells and full-color paper-like displays.

Abstract:Abstract It is challenging for traditional smart windows to possess both high optical transparency (90%, 380–780 nm) and brilliant colors since they are usually contradictory to each other. Here, novel liquid thermal‐responsive smart windows (TSWs) exhibiting high optical transparency (94%), bright iridescent forward scattering structural color, and extremely weak reflective structural colors are fabricated by constructing a refractive index (RI)‐matched non‐close‐packing ordered structure with large lattice distances and thus unique light diffraction mechanisms. The transmittance (24‐94%) and dual‐mode structural color saturation (1–55 times) can be dynamically regulated by simply altering temperatures (20–100 °C), which can be attributed to the temperature‐dependent light diffraction and scattering efficiency. A new information encryption‐decryption technique is developed by combining TSWs with outstanding shapeability, recyclability, and flowability. The information is hidden under normal conditions, while 76 different pieces of information can be decrypted in programmable ways under different stimuli, showing their potential in anti‐counterfeiting and information encryption.

Abstract:A simple bilayer structure containing hydrogel micropixels and semi‐transparent ultrathin aluminum film is proposed for the dynamically tunable structural color with optical Janus effect. Through grayscale electron‐beam lithography, the thickness and swellability of the hydrogel micropixels can be individually regulated, enabling reversible dual‐sided displays for imaging encryption/concealment with humidity change. Structural colors are widely used due to their eco‐friendliness, stability, and precise controllability. However, achieving dynamic structural colors typically requires complex fabrication processes and high‐quality material preparation. Here, a simple bilayer structure containing hydrogel micropattern and semi‐transparent ultrathin aluminum film is proposed that achieves the dynamic structural color with Janus effect. Combining experimental research and theoretical analysis, it is found that by merely controlling the electron‐beam exposure dose, the colors, and patterns with these hydrogel‐based Janus structures can be precisely and rationally designed. Additionally, the thickness and swellability of the hydrogel micropattern can be individually regulated, enabling imaging encryption/concealment with the optical Janus effect. The stability and cyclic performance of this structure are verified. The environmental sensitivity, real‐time adjustability, and stability of this hydrogel‐based Janus structural color make it suitable for applications such as secure information transmission and intelligent anti‐counterfeiting labels.

Abstract:An information encryption strategy based on the printed total internal reflection structural color and the machine learning algorithm, is developed. This strategy possesses the advantages of low‐cost, high precision, high capacity, and dynamic modulation, which is highly promising for a range of applications such as information encryption, data storage, and anti‐counterfeiting. Stimuli‐responsive structural‐color materials have received widespread attention in information encryption due to the significant color changes under different stimuli. However, the trade‐off between the capacity of information input, security level, cost, and large‐area manufacturing greatly limits the application of structural colors in encryption. Herein, dynamic high‐capacity and high‐resolution encryption are achieved by implementing printed total internal reflection (TIR) structural color and computer‐aided image recognition. The printed TIR microstructures are prepared with relative humidity (RH) responsive polymer, which form a heterogeneous wettability system, and can exhibit vibrant color variation with humidity. As the implemented RH is changed, the printed microstructures will expand or shrink precisely, enabling a full‐color modulation across the visible light range. With the color change, each structural‐color pixel can be specifically encoded, allowing for this to encrypt dynamic information within the same pattern at different RHs. Furthermore, This study can precisely integrates tremendous different pixels and easily prepare various encrypted patterns, which guarantee the high‐capacity information input in a low‐cost way. Moreover, through computer programming and algorithm reading, the structural‐color patterns can be decoded and decrypted in real‐time, thus offering great potential for further encryption, anti‐counterfeiting, multiplexing encoding, and data storage.

Abstract:Structural colors are colors generated by the interaction between incident light and nanostructures. Structural colors have been studied for decades due to their promising advantages of long-term stability and environmentally friendly properties compared with conventional pigments and dyes. Previous studies have demonstrated many artificial structural colors inspired by naturally generated colors from plants and animals. Moreover, many strategies consisting of different principles have been reported to achieve dynamically tunable structural colors. Furthermore, the artificial structural colors can have multiple functions besides decoration, such as absorbing solar energy, anti-counterfeiting, and information encryption. In the present work, we reviewed the typical artificial structural colors generated by multilayer films, photonic crystals, and metasurfaces according to the type of structures, and discussed the approaches to achieve dynamically tunable structural colors.

Abstract:Materials with structural coloration capable of multimode color manipulation are gaining growing significance for advanced encryption and high‐security anti‐counterfeiting applications. Among the most promising candidates are naturally derived biomaterials, owing to their renewable, biocompatible, and biodegradable features for developing sustainable, bio‐interfaced photonic platforms. Nevertheless, structural color encryption strategies developed from biological materials usually exhibit limited optical operation modes, lowering their encryption capability and security level. Here, an all‐biomass‐based photonic crystal platform is reported that hierarchically integrates chiral nematic and inverse opal structures through a combination of colloidal assembly, silk protein self‐assembly, and chiral self‐assembly of cellulose nanocrystals, enabling multiplex structural color manipulation in 2D and 3D spaces. The platform's Janus‐style integration brings specular and diffuse reflection, direction‐dependent reflection, circular dichroism, and birefringence into a single form, thereby facilitating multimode structural color tuning in a 2D plane by altering the illumination‐viewing modes. The inherent shape plasticity of silk proteins allows the subsequent creation of 3D photonic platforms with diverse configurations, offering additional spatial flexibility for color encoding. It is demonstrated that this all‐biomass‐based photonic framework exhibits versatile, multilevel, and high‐capacity encryption capability in 2D and 3D spaces, representing an innovative solution to bolster security measures against counterfeiting for future technologies.

Abstract:Abstract Wide gamut and angle-insensitive structural colors are highly desirable for many applications. Herein, a new type of lithography-free, planar bilayer nanostructures for generating structural colors is presented, which is basically composed of a deep-subwavelength, highly absorbing dielectric layer on an opaque metallic substrate. Experimental results show that a galaxy of brilliant structural colors can be generated by our structures, and which can cover ∼50% of the standard red–green–blue color space by adjusting the nanostructure dimensions. The color appearances are robust with respect to the angle of vision. Theoretical partial reflected wave analyses reveal that the structural color effect is attributed to the strong optical asymmetric Fabry–Perot-type (F–P-type) thin-film resonance interference. The versatility of the structural color properties as well as the simplicity of their fabrication processes make this bilayer structures very promising for various applications, such as security marking, information encryption, and color display, etc.

Abstract:Structural colors are widely applied for their stability and their sophisticated optical responses. However, these colors always appear washed-out or pale assigning to the defect hardly avoided in the manufacturing procedures. It is still a challenge to bring multifunctional vivid color via a facile method. A composite structure combining 2D photonic crystal and Fabry-Perot cavity by a simple and convenient method is constructed here. Various metallic colors with tunable hue and high saturation are produced by the composite structure. What is more, an obvious optical Janus effect is created by the composite structure. Iridescent colors can be observed when viewing from the same side of incident light but only pale colors can be seen from the opposite side. The hues and saturation of the colors can be adjusted by the parameters of the composite structure. The experimental results indicate that the color is derived from the synergistic effect of the interference, the diffraction, and the Rayleigh scattering of the composite structure. The facile composite photonic structure pioneers a new way for art, architecture, and security features in anticounterfeiting materials.

Abstract:Optical encryption, exploiting degrees of freedom of light as parameters to encode and decode information, plays an indispensable role in our daily life. Responsive structural color materials can give real-time visible feedback to external stimuli and provide ideal candidates for optical encryption. However, the development of existing responsive structural color materials is hindered by poor repeatability and long feedback time. Meanwhile, there are only few strategies to exploit structural colors in multichannel information encryption. Herein, bioinspired by the structural color variation due to a change in angle arising from the movement of animal's scales or feathers, we developed a general multichannel information encryption strategy using a two-dimensional deformable kirigami arranging orientations of the grating arrays by design. The kirigami grating sheet shows rapid, repeatable, and programmable color change. This strategy utilizes the topological space deformation to guide the change of optical property, which suggests new possibilities for spatial and spectral encryption as well as mechano-sensing and camouflage.

Dual Optical Information‐Encrypted/Decrypted Invisible Photonic Patterns based on Controlled Wettability

Abstract:Invisible photonic patterns based on responsive photonic crystals show great potential in structural‐color encryption. However, single inherent information (structural color) encryption/decryption means and the incomplete invisibility in normal conditions greatly limit further development in high‐precision encryption. Here, a novel invisible photonic pattern encrypted/decrypted by dual optical information (structural color and brightness) is reported. It is prepared by engineering an extremely large wettability difference into the patterned and unpatterned regions of a vapor‐responsive inverse opal film. The same optical properties and the distinct wettability difference between the two regions not only ensure that the pattern encrypted by structural color and brightness in the normal state can be entirely hidden under the microscope, but also ensure that it can be decoded by large color contrast (Δλ = 26–32 nm) and brightness contrast (ΔB = 48–57.6) under flowing water vapor state. The unique invisible photonic pattern, reported for the first time, can inject new life into structural color‐based encryption. Invisible photonic patterns based on responsive photonic crystals with inverse opal structure can be hidden completely even under a microscope unless a flowing water vapor is applied, such as the human breath. They can be revealed by significant brightness contrast (ΔB = 48–57.6) and color contrast (Δλ = 26–32 nm) after a breath is blown.

Abstract:Structural color caused by thin-film interference is widespread and simple in nature. Many researchers have already showed the reversible color change of structural color system, but it is difficult to regulate dynamically with tunable intensity and viewable angle. Herein, a dynamic structural color platform is reported by combining spontaneous thin film interference and wrinkling phenomenon in nature. This robust yet low cost strategy enables large-scale and spatially arbitrary preparation of a uniform structural color surface through the whole visible spectral range. Furthermore, the prepared isotropic and anisotropic structural colors on disordered and ordered wrinkled thin films (WTFs) exhibit different optical properties that can be precisely and reversibly regulated by ultraviolet (UV) light and near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. This exquisite and tunable structural color platform may find applications in information storage, smart display, anticounterfeiting and encryption.

Abstract:Polychromic up/down-conversion emissions in carbon dots (CDs) system play a key role in advanced information encryption and security. However, it is difficult to simultaneously achieve tunable up/down-conversion emissions in CDs system owing to the difficulty in preparation of red down-conversion emission and the poor absorption of CDs to near-infrared excitation sources. Herein, red fluorescence (FL) and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emissions are obtained by establishing energy transfer processes from blue CDs to the Eu3+/Mn2+. Color-tunable upconversion luminescence (UCL) is achieved by in situ preparation process of rare-earth (Er3+/Yb3+, Tm3+/Yb3+, and Tm3+/Er3+) co-doped YF3 upconversion nanoparticles on CDs/boric acid composites. Based on the mold-filling, deposition, handwriting and screen-printing methods, various stable security patterns and characters composed of multicolor emissions of FL, UCL and RTP by switching excitation wavelength and external thermal stimulation, showing great potential for information encryption and security. This work paves the way for the color conversion of FL, RTP and UCL in CDs system and the construction of advanced information encryption and security technologies.

Abstract:Chameleon‐inspired highly brilliant photonic crystals are prepared by non‐close–assembling high refractive index ZnS–silica core–shell structured particles in commercial acrylates. Furthermore, five derived photonic superstructures with distinct optical properties are fabricated by co‐assembly of ZnS–silica and silica particles, and particle‐selective etching strategy. These photonic superstructures show potential applications in information encryption and fluorescence enhancement. Inspired by the brilliant and tunable structural colors based on the large refractive index contrast (Δn) and non‐close‐packing structures of chameleon skins, ZnS–silica photonic crystals (PCs) with highly saturated and adjustable colors are fabricated. Due to the large Δn and non‐close‐packing structure, ZnS–silica PCs show 1) intense reflectance (maximal: 90%), wide photonic bandgaps, and large peak areas, 2.6–7.6, 1.6, and 4.0 times higher than those of silica PCs, respectively; 2) tunable colors by simply adjusting the volume fraction of particles with the same size, more convenient than the conventional way of altering particle sizes; and 3) a relatively low threshold of PC's thickness (57 μm) possessing maximal reflectance compared to that (>200 μm) of the silica PCs. Benefiting from the core–shell structure of the particles, various derived photonic superstructures are fabricated by co‐assembling ZnS–silica and silica particles into PCs or by selectively etching silica or ZnS of ZnS–silica/silica and ZnS–silica PCs. A new information encryption technique is developed based on the unique reversible "disorder–order" switch of water‐responsive photonic superstructures. Additionally, ZnS–silica PCs are ideal candidates for enhancing fluorescence (approximately tenfold), approximately six times higher than that of silica PC.

Abstract:Information encryption is essential for information security.However,constructing a collaborative multiple-information encryption systemwith elaborate design and intuitionistic displays is challenging.In recent years, owing to their wide applications in sensing, intelligentswitch, and information encryption, stimuli-responsive fluorescentmaterials have attracted the attention of scientists. Inspired bythe multi-component collaborative step-by-step strategy from biology,we designed and synthesized a collaborative "dual-step"stimuli-responsive fluorescent copolymer poly(NIPAm-co-1-vinylimidazole-co-Rh-2) (PNVRh-2) with high colorcontrast and good reversibility (>10 cycles) after treatment bymultiplestimuli. Using this strategy, we introduced rhodamine units with anacid-induced ring-opening effect and an electron-rich imidazole sidechain into poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm).By combining these components, the conventional one-step acid-inducedluminescence process was transformed into a dual-step luminescenceprocess triggered by acid and heat. The fluorescence rate and intensityof PNVRh-2 could be manipulated by adjusting the pH and temperature.Contactless thermoprinting and erasable imaging were achieved. Furthermore,the great potential of PNVRh-2 in programmatic temperature-controlledinformation display and information encryption was illustrated, whichoffers a perspective for designing and optimizing high-performanceinformation encryption materials.
Recent Progress on Structural Coloration

Abstract:Structural coloration generates colors by the interaction between incident light and micro- or nano-scale structures. It has received tremendous interest for decades, due to advantages including robustness against bleaching and environmentally friendly properties (compared with conventional pigments and dyes). As a versatile coloration strategy, the tuning of structural colors based on micro- and nanoscale photonic structures has been extensively explored and can enable a broad range of applications including displays, anti-counterfeiting, and coating. However, scholarly research on structural colors has had limited impact on commercial products because of their disadvantages in cost, scalability, and fabrication. In this review, we analyze the key challenges and opportunities in the development of structural colors. We first summarize the fundamental mechanisms and design strategies for structural colors while reviewing the recent progress in realizing dynamic structural coloration. The promising potential applications including optical information processing and displays are also discussed while elucidating the most prominent challenges that prevent them from translating into technologies on the market. Finally, we address the new opportunities that are underexplored by the structural coloration community but can be achieved through multidisciplinary research within the emerging research areas.
A dynamic assembly-induced emissive system for advanced information encryption with time-dependent security

Abstract:The development of advanced materials for information encryption with time-dependent features is essential to meet the increasing demand on encryption security. Herein, smart materials with orthogonal and temporal encryption properties are successfully developed based on a dynamic assembly-induced multicolour supramolecular system. Multicolour fluorescence, including blue, orange and even white light emissions, is achieved by controlling the supramolecular assembly of pyrene derivatives by tailoring the solvent composition. By taking advantage of the tuneable fluorescence, dynamically controlled information encryption materials with orthogonal encryption functions, e.g., 3D codes, are successfully developed. Moreover, time-dependent information encryption materials, such as temporal multi-information displays and 4D codes, are also developed by enabling the fluorescence-controllable supramolecular system in the solid phase, showing multiple pieces of information on a time scale, and the correct information can be identified only at a specified time. This work provides an inspiring point for the design of information encryption materials with higher security requirements.
