Abstract:Durhuus and Jonsson (1995) introduced the class of "locally constructible" (LC) 3-spheres and showed that there are only exponentially-many combinatorial types of simplicial LC 3-spheres. Such upper bounds are crucial for the convergence of models for 3D quantum gravity. We characterize the LC property for d-spheres ("the sphere minus a facet collapses to a (d-2)-complex") and for d-balls. In particular, we link it to the classical notions of collapsibility, shellability and constructibility, and obtain hierarchies of such properties for simplicial balls and spheres. The main corollaries from this study are: 1.) Not all simplicial 3-spheres are locally constructible. (This solves a problem by Durhuus and Jonsson.) 2.) There are only exponentially many shellable simplicial 3-spheres with given number of facets. (This answers a question by Kalai.) 3.) All simplicial constructible 3-balls are collapsible. (This answers a question by Hachimori.) 4.) Not every collapsible 3-ball collapses onto its boundary minus a facet. (This property appears in papers by Chillingworth and Lickorish.)

Abstract:Fast and efficient homology algorithms are in demand in the applied sciences for analyzing solid materials and proteins, processing digital imaging data, or pattern classification among others. Recent advances employ discrete Morse theory as a preprocessor. Research in this area has lead to the need to find complicated test examples. We present an infinite series of examples that have been constructed to test some of the latest algorithms under development. This family of 4-spheres (known as the Akbulut-Kirby spheres) is based on a handlebody construction via finitely presented groups.

Abstract:Nevo, Santos, and Wilson constructed $2^{\Omega(N^d)}$ combinatorially distinct simplicial $(2d-1)$-spheres with $N$ vertices. We prove that all spheres produced by one of their methods are shellable. Combining this with prior results of Kalai, Lee, and Benedetti and Ziegler, we conclude that for all $D \ge 3$, there are $2^{\Theta(N^{\lceil D/2 \rceil})}$ shellable simplicial $D$-spheres with $N$ vertices.

The dunce hat in a minimal non-extendably collapsible 3-ball

Abstract:We obtain a geometric realization of a minimal 8-vertex triangulation of the dunce hat in Euclidean 3-space. We show there is a simplicial 3-ball with 8 vertices that is collapsible, but also collapses onto the dunce hat, which is not collapsible. This 3-ball is as small as possible, because all triangulated 3-balls with fewer vertices are extendably collapsible. As we will see, the Alexander dual of the dunce hat is collapsible.

Transversal numbers of simplicial polytopes, spheres, and pure complexes

Abstract:We prove new upper and lower bounds on transversal numbers of several classes of simplicial complexes. Specifically, we establish an upper bound on the transversal numbers of pure simplicial complexes in terms of the number of vertices and the number of facets, and then provide constructions of pure simplicial complexes whose transversal numbers come close to this bound. We introduce a new family of $d$-dimensional polytopes that could be considered as ''siblings'' of cyclic polytopes and show that the transversal ratios of such odd-dimensional polytopes are $2/5-o(1)$. The previous record for the transversal ratios of $(2k+1)$-polytopes was $1/(k+1)$. Finally, we construct infinite families of $3$-, $4$-, and $5$-dimensional simplicial spheres with transversal ratios converging to $5/8$, $1/2$, and $6/11$, respectively. The previous record was $11/21$, $2/5$, and $1/2$, respectively.

Abstract:We present three large families of new examples of plumbed 3-manifolds that bound rational homology 4-balls. These are constructed using two operations, also defined here, that preserve an algebraic obstruction to bounding rational homology balls. Apart from in the cases shown in this paper, it remains open whether these operations are rational homology cobordisms in general. The families of new examples include a multitude of families of rational surgeries on torus knots, and we explicitly describe which positive torus knots we now know to have a surgery that bounds a rational homology ball. While not the focus of this paper, we implicitly confirm the slice-ribbon conjecture for new, more complicated, examples of arborescent knots, including many Montesinos knots.

Abstract:Motivated by Akbulut-Larson's construction of Brieskorn spheres bounding rational homology 4-balls, we explore plumbed 3-manifolds that bound rational homology circles and use them to construct infinite families of rational homology 3-spheres that bound rational homology 4-balls. Some of these rational homology 3-spheres are new examples of integer homology 3-spheres that bound rational homology 4-balls, but do not bound integer homology 4-balls (i.e. nontrivial elements of <math>ker(ΘZ3→ΘQ3)</math>). In particular, we find infinite families of torus bundles over the circle that bound rational homology circles, provide a simple method for constructing more general plumbed 3-manifolds that bound rational homology circles, and show that, for example, −1-surgery along any unknotting number one knot K with a positive crossing that can be switched to unknot K bounds a rational homology 4-ball.

Abstract:Spherical t-designs are Chebyshev-type averaging sets on the d-sphere S^d which are exact for polynomials of degree at most t. This concept was introduced in 1977 by Delsarte, Goethals, and Seidel, who also found the minimum possible size of such designs, in particular, that the number of points in a 3-design on S^d must be at least n>=2d+2. In this paper we give explicit constructions for spherical 3-designs on S^d consisting of n points for d=1 and n>=4; d=2 and n=6; 8; >= 10; d=3 and n=8; >=10; d = 4 and n = 10; 12; >= 14; d>=5 and n>=5(d+1)/2 odd or n>=2d+2 even. We also provide some evidence that 3-designs of other sizes do not exist.

Abstract:Abstract We construct sphere fibrations over ‐connected ‐manifolds such that the total space is a connected sum of sphere products. More precisely, for even, we construct fibrations , where is a ‐connected ‐dimensional Poincaré duality complex that satisfies , in a localised category of spaces. The construction of the fibration is proved for , where the prime 2, and the primes that occur as torsion in are inverted. In specific cases, by either assuming is small, or assuming is large we can reduce the number of primes that need to be inverted. Integral results are obtained for or 4, and if is bigger than the number of cyclic summands in the stable stem , we obtain results after inverting 2. Finally, we prove some applications for fibrations over , and for looped configuration spaces.

Spherical objects in dimensions two and three

Abstract:This paper classifies spherical objects in various geometric settings in dimensions two and three, including both minimal and partial crepant resolutions of Kleinian singularities, as well as arbitrary flopping 3-fold contractions with only Gorenstein terminal singularities. The main result is much more general: in each such setting, we prove that all objects in the associated null category with no negative Ext groups are the image, under the action of an appropriate braid or pure braid group, of some object in the heart of a bounded t-structure. The corollary is that all objects which admit no negative Exts, and for which the self-Hom space is one dimensional, are the images of the simples. A variation on this argument goes further, and classifies all bounded t-structures. There are multiple geometric, topological and algebraic consequences, primarily to autoequivalences and stability conditions. Our main new technique also extends into representation theory, and we establish that in the derived category of a finite dimensional algebra which is silting discrete, every object with no negative Ext groups lies in the heart of a bounded t-structure. As a consequence, every semibrick complex can be completed to a simple minded collection.

Abstract:Motivated from the surrounding property of a point set in $\mathbb{R}^d$ introduced by Holmsen, Pach and Tverberg, we consider the transversal number and chromatic number of a simplicial sphere. As an attempt to give a lower bound for the maximum transversal ratio of simplicial $d$-spheres, we provide two infinite constructions. The first construction gives infintely many $(d+1)$-dimensional simplicial polytopes with the transversal ratio exactly $\frac{2}{d+2}$ for every $d\geq 2$. In the case of $d=2$, this meets the previously well-known upper bound $1/2$ tightly. The second gives infinitely many simplicial 3-spheres with the transversal ratio greater than $1/2$. This was unexpected from what was previously known about the surrounding property. Moreover, we show that, for $d\geq 3$, the facet hypergraph $\mathcal{F}(\mathsf{K})$ of a $d$-dimensional simplicial sphere $\mathsf{K}$ has the chromatic number $\chi(\mathcal{F}(\mathsf{K})) \in O(n^{\frac{\lceil d/2\rceil-1}{d}})$, where $n$ is the number of vertices of $\mathsf{K}$. This slightly improves the upper bound previously obtained by Heise, Panagiotou, Pikhurko, and Taraz.

On compact packings of Euclidean space with spheres of finitely many sizes

Abstract:For $d\in\mathbb{N}$, a compact sphere packing of Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ is a set of spheres in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with disjoint interiors so that the contact hypergraph of the packing is the vertex scheme of a homogeneous simplicial $d$-complex that covers all of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. We are motivated by the question: For $d,n\in\mathbb{N}$ with $d,n\geq2$, how many configurations of numbers $0<r_{0}<r_{1}<\ldots<r_{n-1}=1$ can occur as the radii of spheres in a compact sphere packing of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ wherein there occur exactly $n$ sizes of sphere? We introduce what we call `heteroperturbative sets' of labeled triangulations of unit spheres and we discuss the existence of non-trivial examples of heteroperturbative sets. For a fixed heteroperturbative set, we discuss how a compact sphere packing may be associated to the heteroperturbative set or not. We proceed to show, for $d,n\in\mathbb{N}$ with $d,n\geq2$ and for a fixed heteroperturbative set, that the collection of all configurations of $n$ distinct positive numbers that can occur as the radii of spheres in a compact packing is finite, when taken over all compact sphere packings of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ which have exactly $n$ sizes of sphere and which are associated to the fixed heteroperturbative set.

Symplectic rational homology ball fillings of Seifert fibered spaces

Abstract:We characterize when some small Seifert fibered spaces can be the convex boundary of a symplectic rational homology ball and give strong restrictions for others to bound such manifolds. As part of this, we show that the only spherical $3$-manifolds that are the boundary of a symplectic rational homology ball are the lens spaces $L(p^2,pq-1)$ found by Lisca and give evidence for the Gompf conjecture that Brieskorn spheres do not bound Stein domains in C^2. We also find restrictions on Lagrangian disk fillings of some Legendrian knots in small Seifert fibered spaces.

Empty simplices of large width

Abstract:An empty simplex is a lattice simplex in which vertices are the only lattice points. We show two constructions leading to the first known empty simplices of width larger than their dimension: - We introduce cyclotomic simplices and exhaustively compute all the cyclotomic simplices of dimension $10$ and volume up to $2^{31}$. Among them we find five empty ones of width $11$, and none of larger width. - Using circulant matrices of a very specific form, we construct empty simplices of arbitrary dimension $d$ and width growing asymptotically as $d/\operatorname{arcsinh}(1) \sim 1.1346\,d$.

Abstract:A subcomplex X≤C of a simplicial complex is strongly rigid if every locally injective, simplicial map X→C is the restriction of a unique automorphism of C . Aramayona and the second author proved that the curve complex of an orientable surface can be exhausted by finite strongly rigid sets. The Hatcher sphere complex is an analog of the curve complex for isotopy classes of essential spheres in a connect sum of n copies of S1×S2 . We show that there is an exhaustion of the sphere complex by finite strongly rigid sets for all n≥3 and that when n=2 the sphere complex does not have finite rigid sets.

Simplicial degree $d$ self-maps on $n$-spheres

Abstract:The degree of a map between orientable manifolds is a crucial concept in topology, providing deep insights into the structure and properties of the manifolds and the corresponding maps. This concept has been thoroughly investigated, particularly in the realm of simplicial maps between orientable triangulable spaces. In this paper, we concentrate on constructing simplicial degree $d$ self-maps on $n$-spheres. We describe the construction of several such maps, demonstrating that for every $d \in \mathbb{Z} \setminus {0}$, there exists a degree $d$ simplicial map from a triangulated $n$-sphere with $3|d| + n - 1$ vertices to $\mathbb{S}^n_{n+2}$. Further, we prove that, for every $d \in \mathbb{Z} \setminus {0}$, there exists a simplicial map of degree $3 d$ from a triangulated $n$-sphere with $6|d| + n$ vertices, as well as a simplicial map of degree $3d+\frac{d}{|d|}$ from a triangulated $n$-sphere with $6|d|+n+3$ vertices, to $\mathbb{S}^{n}_{n+2}$. Furthermore, we show that for any $|k| \geq 2$ and $n \geq |k|$, a degree $k$ simplicial map exists from a triangulated $n$-sphere $K$ with $|k| + n + 3$ vertices to $\mathbb{S}^n_{n+2}$. We also prove that for $d = 2$ and 3, these constructions produce vertex-minimal degree $d$ self-maps of $n$-spheres. Additionally, for every $n \geq 2$, we construct a degree $n+1$ simplicial map from a triangulated $n$-sphere with $2n + 4$ vertices to $\mathbb{S}^{n}_{n+2}$. We also prove that this construction provides facet minimal degree $n+1$ self-maps of $n$-spheres.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of locally consistent system of half-spaces for a real hyperplane arrangement. We embed a sphere in the complexified complement by shifting the real unit sphere into the imaginary direction indicated by the half-spaces. We then prove that the sphere is homotopically trivial if and only if the system of half-spaces is globally consistent. To prove its non-triviality, we compute the twisted intersection number of the sphere with a specific, explicitly constructed twisted Borel-Moore cycle.

Generating Well-Shaped D-Dimensional Delaunay Meshes

Abstract:A d-dimensional simplicial mesh is a Delaunay triangulation if the circumsphere of each of its simplices does not contain any vertices inside. A mesh is well-shaped if the maximum aspect ratio of all its simplices is bounded from above by a constant. It is a long-term open problem to generate well-shaped d-dimensional Delaunay meshes for a given polyhedral domain. In this paper, we present a refinement-based method that generates well-shaped d-dimensional Delaunay meshes for any PLC domain with no small input angles. Furthermore, we show that the generated well-shaped mesh has O(n) d-simplices, where n is the smallest number of d-simplices of any almost-good meshes for the same domain. A mesh is almost-good if each of its simplices has a bounded circumradius to the shortest edge length ratio.
