Abstract:It is proved that every function of finite Baire index on a separable metric space $K$ is a $D$-function, i.e., a difference of bounded semi-continuous functions on $K$. In fact it is a strong $D$-function, meaning it can be approximated arbitrarily closely in $D$-norm, by simple $D$-functions. It is shown that if the $n^{th}$ derived set of $K$ is non-empty for all finite $n$, there exist $D$-functions on $K$ which are not strong $D$-functions. Further structural results for the classes of finite index functions and strong $D$-functions are also given.

Abstract:Let $\lambda$ be an uncountable cardinal such that $2^{< \lambda } = \lambda$. Working in the setup of generalized descriptive set theory, we study the structure of $\lambda^+$-Borel measurable functions with respect to various kinds of limits, and isolate a suitable notion of $\lambda$-Baire class $\xi$ function. Among other results, we provide higher analogues of two classical theorems of Lebesgue, Hausdorff, and Banach, namely: (1) A function is $\lambda^+$-Borel measurable if and only if it can be obtained from continuous functions by iteratively applying pointwise $D$-limits, where $D$ varies among directed sets of size at most $\lambda$. (2) A function is of $\lambda$-Baire class $\xi$ if and only if it is $\boldsymbol{\Sigma}^{0}_{\xi+1}$-measurable.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to develop the theory of product Hardy spaces built on Banach lattices on . First we introduce new product Hardy spaces associated with ball quasi-Banach function spaces via applying the Littlewood–Paley–Stein theory. Then we establish a decomposition theorem for in terms of the discrete Calderón's identity. Moreover, we explore some useful and general extrapolation theorems of Rubio de Francia on and give some applications to boundedness of operators. Finally, we conclude that the bi-parameter singular integral operators are bounded from to itself and bounded from to via extrapolation. The main results obtained in this paper have a wide range of generality. Especially, we can apply these results to many concrete examples of ball quasi-Banach function spaces, including product Herz spaces, weighted product Morrey spaces and product Orlicz spaces.

Abstract:A topological space $X$ is Baire if the Baire Category Theorem holds for $X$, i.e., the intersection of any sequence of open dense subsets of $X$ is dense in $X$. One of the interesting problems for the space $B_1(X)$ of all Baire-one real-valued functions is characterization topological space $X$ for which the function space $B_1(X)$ is Baire. In this paper, we solve this problem, namely, we have obtained a characterization when a function space $B_1(X)$ has the Baire property for any Tychonoff space $X$. Also we proved that $B_1(X)$ is Baire for any $\gamma$-space $X$. This answers a question posed recently by T. Banakh and S. Gabriyelyan. We also conclude that, it is consistent there are no uncountable separable metrizable space $X$ such that $B_1(X)$ is countable dense homogeneous.

Furthermore, it is proved that for a real-valued function on a subset of R , among all points of discontinuity, the non-isolated non-monotone points are crucial to determining whether the function is a Baire function or not.

Abstract:We prove that for a stratifiable scattered space $X$ of finite scattered height, the function space $C_k(X)$ endowed with the compact-open topology is Baire if and only if $X$ has the Moving Off Property of Gruenhage and Ma. As a byproduct of the proof we establish many interesting Baire category properties of the function spaces $C_k'(X,Y)=\{f\in C_k(X,Y):f(X')\subset\{*_Y\}\}$, where $X$ is a topological space, $X'$ is the set of non-isolated points of $X$, and $Y$ is a topological space with a distinguished point $*_Y$.

Abstract:A topological space $X$ is Baire if the Baire Category Theorem holds for $X$, i.e., the intersection of any sequence of open dense subsets of $X$ is dense in $X$. One of the interesting problems in the theory of functional spaces is the characterization of the Baire property of a functional space through the topological property of the support of functions. In the paper this problem is solved for the space $M(X, K)$ of all measurable compact-valued ($K$-valued) functions defined on a measurable space $(X,\Sigma)$ with the topology of pointwise convergence. It is proved that $M(X, K)$ is Baire for any metrizable compact space $K$.

Abstract:Duparc introduced a two-player game for a function $f$ between zero-dimensional Polish spaces in which Player II has a winning strategy iff $f$ is of Baire class 1. We generalize this result by defining a game for an arbitrary function $f : X \to Y$ between arbitrary Polish spaces such that Player II has a winning strategy in this game iff $f$ is of Baire class 1. Using the strategy of Player II, we reprove a result concerning first return recoverable functions.

Abstract:Let X be a Tychonoff topological space, B1(X,R) be the space of real-valued Baire 1 functions on X and τUC be the topology of uniform convergence on compacta. The main purpose of this paper is to study cardinal invariants of (B1(X,R),τUC). We prove that the following conditions are equivalent: (1) (B1(X,R),τUC) is metrizable; (2) (B1(X,R),τUC) is completely metrizable; (3) (B1(X,R),τUC) is Čech-complete; and (4) X is hemicompact. It is also proven that if X is a separable metric space with a non isolated point, then the topology of uniform convergence on compacta on B1(X,R) is seen to behave like a metric topology in the sense that the weight, netweight, density, Lindelof number and cellularity are all equal for this topology and they are equal to c=|B1(X,R)|. We find further conditions on X under which these cardinal invariants coincide on B1(X,R).

Abstract:Let $X$ and $Y$ be the Hausdorff topological spaces and let $A$ be both an $\fs$- and $\gd$- subset of $X$. Let also $f\cn A\to Y$ be a function for which the inverse image of every open subset $U\subset Y$ is $\fs$ in $X$. We show that $f$ can be linearly extended to a function with the same property defined on $X$. A similar result is proved for Baire-one function defined on an analogous subset of $\mR$. We give also an answer when the extension map is (with a supremum norm) an isometry.

Abstract:This paper focuses mainly on the ring of all bounded Baire one functions on a topological space. The uniform norm topology arises from the $\sup$-norm defined on the collection $B_1^*(X)$ of all bounded Baire one functions. With respect to this topology, $B_1^*(X)$ is a topological ring. It is proved that under uniform norm topology, the set of all units forms an open set and as a consequence of it, every maximal ideal of $B_1^*(X)$ is closed in $B_1^*(X)$ with uniform norm topology. Since the natural extension of uniform norm topology on $B_1(X)$, when $B_1^*(X) \neq B_1(X)$, does not show up these features, a topology called $m_B$-topology is defined on $B_1(X)$ suitably to achieve these results on $B_1(X)$. It is proved that the relative $m_B$ topology coincides with the uniform norm topology on $B_1^*(X)$ if and only if $B_1(X) = B_1^*(X)$. Moreover, $B_1(X)$ with $m_B$-topology is 1st countable if and only if $B_1(X) = B_1^*(X)$. \\ The last part of the paper establishes a correspondence between the ideals of $B_1^*(X)$ and a special class of $Z_B$-filters, called $e_B$-filters on a normal topological space $X$. It is also observed that for normal spaces, the cardinality of the collection of all maximal ideals of $B_1(X)$ and those of $B_1^*(X)$ are the same.

Abstract:Motivated by Tsirelson's implicitly defined pathological Banach space, T. Gowers asked whether explicitly defined Banach spaces must include either $c_0$ or some $\ell^p$. J. Iovino and P. Casazza gave an affirmative answer for first-order continuous logic. We greatly extend their work to logics with much weaker requirements than compactness on their type spaces. Noteworthy is our extensive use of the topology of function spaces ($C_p$-theory) as developed by Arhangel'skii, and our use of double limit conditions studied by H. König and N. Kuhn.

Abstract:One important class of tools in the study of the connections between algebraic and topological structures are the "Banach-Stone type theorems", which describe algebraic isomorphisms of algebras (or groups, lattices, etc.) of functions in terms of homeomorphisms between the underlying topological spaces. Several such theorems have been proven throughout the last century, however not all of them are comparable, and in particular no single one is the strongest. In this article, we describe a general framework which encompasses several of these results, and which allows for new applications related to groupoid algebras, and to groups of circle-valued functions. This is attained by a detailed study of "disjointness relations" on sets of functions, which play a central role (even if not explicitly) in previously-proven Banach-Stone type theorems.

Abstract:Motivated by new examples of functional Banach spaces over the unit disk, arising as the symbol spaces in the study of random analytic functions, for which the monomials exhibit features of an unconditional basis yet they often don't even form a Schauder basis, we introduce a notion called solid basis for Banach spaces and p-Banach spaces and study its properties. Besides justifying the rich existence of solid bases, we study their relationship with unconditional bases, the weak-star convergence of Taylor polynomials, the problem of a solid span and the curious roles played by c 0 . The two features of this work are as follows: (1) during the process, we are led to revisit the axioms satisfied by a typical Banach space of analytic functions over the unit disk, leading to a notion of (and ), as well as a number of related functorial constructions, which are of independent interests; (2) the main interests of solid basis lie in the case of non-separable (p-)Banach spaces, such as BMOA and the Bloch space instead of VMOA and the little Bloch space.
