Extending architectural affordance: the case of the publicly accessible toilet

Abstract:Publicly accessible toilets present a site of entrenched cultures of tolerance and intolerance that centre on our relationship with our bodies, and those of others with whom we share the space. This research uses the case of the publicly accessible toilet to demonstrate how the design of these facilities has continued to present a ‘special needs’ approach, opposed to inclusive design. Analysis of design guidance and user experiences of both the standard and accessible toilet accommodation highlights how current design and provision of these essential facilities contribute to ‘environmental pressure’ (Lawton, 1986). Thus current design continues to create barriers in the built environment that prevent wider access to the city and engagement with education, work and leisure opportunities it affords. The thesis incorporates a reanalysis of secondary data from 166 able and disabled informants, which focuses on their experience of accessing and using publicly accessible toilets. It considers these experiences through the concept of affordance and makes the case for a shift from the built environment determining behaviour, to one in which the body affords experience of the environment.

Abstract:Purpose: A growing emphasis has been placed on providing equal opportunities for all people, particularly people with disabilities, to support participation. Barriers to participation are represented in part by physical space restrictions. This article explores the decision-making process during the construction of a new office building housing a disability-rights organization. The building project featured in this study was developed on the principles of universal design, maximal accessibility, and sustainability to support access and participation. Method: A qualitative case study approach was used involving collection of data through in-depth interviews with key decision-makers; non-participant observations at design meetings; and on-site tours. Qualitative thematic analysis along with the development of a classification system was used to understand specific building elements and the relevant decision processes from which they resulted. Results: Recording and analyzing the design process revealed several key issues including grassroots involvement of stakeholders; interaction between universal design and sustainable design; addressing diversity through flexibility and universality; and segregationist accessibility versus universal design. Conclusions: This case study revealed complex interactions between accessibility, universal design, and sustainability. Two visual models were proposed to understand and analyze these complexities.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to describe the concept of basic dimensions of space and environment for persons with disabilities. This research was made by conducting a literature review. The results of the study were taken by taking data from the literature. The data is then processed to be presented in the form of an explanation that can be easily understood. Therefore, it is hoped that the research results can be used as a reference for the construction of buildings and the environment, especially for buildings in hospitals, schools, and public facilities for people with special needs (i.e. wheelchairs, crutches, and canes for the blind).

Abstract:This book for architects, interior designers, building managers, students, conference organisers looks at first principles to provide the user with the 'tools' to make their own decisions rather than a 'cookbook' approach. It is intended that designs and product information can be taken straight from the manual and inserted into ongoing projects. For the first time the book considers the needs of people with visual, hearing and mental disabilities, who make up the majority of disabled people in the population, alongside those of people with physical mobility disabilities. Practical low cost solutions to retro-fitting existing buildings are discussed, as well as the methods used to assess the suitability of an existing building, and assembling a project to improve access for disabled people. Specific products and designs are illustrated and discussed - with full working technical drawings, and full specification details. These will reduce considerably the research time needed to produce a cost-effective solution that will improve access for disabled people. A perspective of the standards and legislation dealing with access issues in the UK is compared with those in other countries, and the standards mentioned are compared with the realities of practical implementation carried out in 4 years of design in this area.

Abstract:Universities are a critical place for preparing humans for their future endeavours because they provide the necessary knowledge and skills for personal and professional growth. However, inadequate accessibility for students with disabilities (SWDs) has hindered them from fully participating in any university programmes that cause of lack connectivity in High Educational Institution (HEI) campuses area. With the growing numbers of SWDs, HEI should be freely access without any discrimination regarding to the physical environment. Therefore, this article will review the current literature on integration of Universal Design (UD) in HEI for the past 15 years. It is thought that the information and knowledge presented in this review can aid higher education institutions in creating a more inclusive environment to support students with disabilities (SWDs) during their campus life. A list of keywords (UD theory and principles, Students with Disabilities, Accessibility in HEI, and Outdoor environments) related to the scope of this research was identified. In the second step, the keyword for studies on Scopus and WoS were searched, and total of 20 papers were reviewed. A themed review was carried out, where 33 sub-themes were identified based on the keywords. The result suggests a new accessibility model for the integration of UD in architectural environments. This study will benefit future researchers that focus on outdoor environment with the integration of UD theory.
Completely Accessibility Solutions for Historical Building and Areas in the Multi-Layered City Center of Sivas

Abstract:The study's major objective is to demonstrate that historical structures and locations are completely accessible to all people. While the required architectural modifications are performed in historic buildings and locations, they are intended to provide suitable solutions for everyone, not just a particular impaired group. The goal is to identify architectural alternatives that can be quickly implemented while preserving the original values. Individual and in-depth interviews with people with disabilities were done using questionnaire, interview and observational procedures. Successful examples from across the globe were scanned using scanning and descriptive techniques and project data were then examined and compared. The connected, comfortable, convenient, convivial, and prominent (5C) characteristics from the LPAC London Strategy were taken into account in Sivas city's monitoring and spatial analytic methodologies. Projects for architectural applications were created and technical data and solution suggestions were given using the original methodology while maintaining the integrity of the architectural language. It was shown that enhancing the accessibility of historical structures and locations has an impact on how many handicapped people participate in cultural events. Making historical structures and locations completely accessible would enhance the city's identity. The historical structure and setting are more accessible thanks to thoughtful and appropriate design arrangements. The architectural modifications necessary to enable complete accessibility may also be done to old structures and locations. Without compromising the texture, it is feasible to make historical and protected buildings accessible. The discussion environment, physical interference sensitivities in registered monuments, consideration of the needs of numerous different disability groups in the design of architectural arrangements, difficulties in correctly and effectively communicating with disabled people, and ethical sensitivities all contribute to the study's limitations. The research influenced designers to raise awareness of the need to make our surroundings more accessible. Additionally, field research was done in five particular Sivas buildings with people who are orthopedically, visually, or both. And as a result, the ability to build user-oriented solutions has been established. The unique significance of the research lies in its richness in addressing the concerns of appropriate intervention to registered structures while simultaneously taking into account the balance of preservation and usage in historical buildings and places with the topic of universal design. The research is also a thorough paper on the subject of duties resulting from legal requirements. It may be the first study in the literature to thoroughly examine architectural choices made to promote future research by increasing awareness of the accessibility of historic sites and structures.

Abstract:Person with disabilities has different needs than normal individuals. This difference causes limitations in movement and orientation. As a designer, of course in creating facilities can be used all levels of society, so the need for special treatment in design. Part of architectural context other than buildings is open space. Open space has another function, as a circulation path can also be developed in the form of park. Benefits for people with disabilities, parks can also be a means of learning, training independence and therapeutic areas. In the case study selected location in SLB-C Lawang (tuna grahita or mental retardation), this location has a large area for the development of garden design of motor development and mental children with disabilities or called educational park. The park is divided into two zones: active and passive. The active zone consists of a children's playroom and a sensory park that trains the senses of the five senses, while the passive zone as a park to be visually enjoyed. Therapeutic activities for mental retardation are not just for healing but to practice the senses' abilities of smell, taste, touch, and listener. Initially still an open space that has not been functioned specifically. The problem in this research is how the concept of accessibility and vegetation so that facilities can be used. The objective of the study was to develop a system in parks that can be enjoyed by people with disabilities and as a means of therapy. The result of this research is a concept of ease of achievement of garden for children with disfigured attention to detail of circulation design and variety of vegetation that support the concept of sensory garden so as therapy area.

Abstract:Ecological architecture is the harmony between structural function and environmental function through the efficient usage of natural potential and adherence to eco-friendly principles. The purpose of this study is to see how ecological architecture is applied in the design of museum buildings. The object of this research is the Museum Gunungapi Merapi. The building is located in Yogyakarta, near Mount Merapi, a humid tropical area. This qualitative descriptive research illustrates the factual conditions of the museum, which later on will be associated with theories found in literatures. A building will be regarded as ecological if its design has met ecological architectural principles in the sense of having incorporated environmental consideration in its physical structure, harmonized its system with nature, used sustainable natural resources and energy efficiency, and applied spatial planning according to ecological values. The results have led to a conclusion that the museum has been built by considering the ecological architectural aspects of its structural arrangement, landscape utilization, and material usage.

Abstract:People with disabilities often have unequal access to education. Most higher education institutions and universities in Indonesia still have discriminatory practices. The main factors that affect people with disabilities are the lack of infrastructure and limited budget allocation. In Indonesian Islamic higher education institutions, many policies related to the development of education have not considered persons with disabilities. This study used a normative research method which examined legal policies for people with disabilities in Islamic universities in Indonesia. This study is essential to understand the legal policies in Islamic universities for people with disabilities. In addition, this study also provided an analysis of the compatibility between Fiqh related to equality for people with disabilities and legal policies in Islamic universities in Indonesia. This study concluded that most Islamic universities in Indonesia do not have legal policies that support people with disabilities and ensure their equal treatment at the university. For this reason, this study recommended that the ministry, which has the duty and authority in the field of education, establish guidelines and ensure that all universities in Indonesia provide accessibility to persons with disabilities. Abstract:Big cities in developing countries face many obstacles related to the built environment when confronted by socioeconomic inequalities, which is reflected by the uneven access to basic living infrastructure, such as sanitation and housing. In the light of new approaches to traditional materials and building techniques, this article aims to investigate the use of digital fabrication tools in the production of lightweight precast systems for the social production of habitat in Brazil. To develop a clear assessment of the possibilities created by these technological alternatives, two academic applied researches are considered as case studies: a modular sidewalk for rain water drainage and a precast building system for housing. The main goal here is to discuss the role of high-tech solutions —such as digital fabrication tools and lightweight precast systems— in promoting urban community-driven upgrading initiatives in precarious settlements, accompanied by local economic development.

Abstract:In this article, we investigated dominant manifestations of spatial exclusion and inclusion of people with disabilities in Africa. Manifestations of spatial exclusion include: design that create inaccessible spaces; socially constructed spatialisation that prevents people with disabilities from using and enjoying spaces in the same way as people without disabilities and harmful cultural practices, like concealment and institutionalisation. Spatial inclusion is promoted through law and policy in support of universal design, inclusive urban development, elimination of concealment and deinstitutionalisation. The authors argue that there are signs of positive progress towards spatial inclusion, but that problems that impede the implementation of progressive laws, policies and practices will have to be dealt with to ensure spatial inclusion for people with disabilities in Africa. The human rights disability model supports communities which value accessibility of all spaces to all. Accessibility is more than physical access; it is also allowing all people the full use and enjoyment of a space. Despite laws, policies and practices that support spatial inclusion, the built environment is mostly inaccessible to people with disabilities in Africa. Concealment, a reality in many African countries, is a harmful cultural practice that is spatially disabling. Spatial inclusion of people with disabilities can be realised with a greater commitment to all-inclusive design, avoiding placement of people with disabilities in mental and psychiatric institutions, developing accessible urban spaces and better implementation of laws and policies.
