Abstract:The R134a used in automotive heat pump systems is banned by Montreal Protocol, alternative refrigerants like R1234yf, R744, and R290 are currently being investigated for their potential application in automotive heat pump systems to replace R134a. R1234yf based heat pump system is widely developed due to its similar thermodynamic properties to R134a. R1234yf is perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and will be banned by PFAS regulations, so natural refrigerants will be applied in near future. In this study, R744 and R290 are chosen among the natural refrigerants. The system should be operated in all operating conditions, performance analysis under extreme condition is imperative. In light of this, by using GT-Suite, the usability of using R744 and R290 as replacements in heat pump systems originally designed for R1234yf is investigated, and examined how these refrigerants performed under extreme conditions in the system. As a result, R744 cannot be interchangeable as its operating point is out of the compressor operating range. In contrast, R290 showed partially interchangeable, when the operating point of the system is within the operating range of the compressor. The capacity of heat pump system with R290 is 158% and 112% compared to that with R1234yf in heating and cooling mode, respectively. While, the COP with R290 is 84% and 83% compared to that with R1234yf in heating and cooling mode, respectively. Through this study, performance analysis of entire integrated electric vehicle system including battery, powertrain, etc. can be conducted.
