Abstract:Land is one kind of indispensable natural resources on which human depends for survival and development. However, with the rapid development of economy and society in China, the inefficient, extensive and other irrational ways of land use have triggered regional ecological unbalance which laid some negative effects on the sustainable development of China. Based on the innovative concept of ecological civilization and combined with the urbanization and new rural construction, land consolidation has made substantial contributions to the configuration of urban and rural land and the development of urbanization in China. In this paper, it analyzed the coordinated relationship between land consolidation and ecological environment and expounded the current status of domestic researches of land consolidation. Additionally, it studied the existing problems and put forward some suggestions and countermeasures for the field of land consolidation.

Abstract:Agricultural land consolidation has been implemented to address land fragmentation problems in many countries. Land consolidation has substantial impacts on agroecosystems. However, studies of its effects on soil microbial communities are currently insufficient. We have designed this study to determine the effects of land consolidation on microbiota by comparing farmlands that had undergone land consolidation with nonconsolidated farmlands within one county in southeastern China. Land consolidation promoted bacterial alpha diversity and migration. Fungal communities were more stable than bacterial communities. The beta diversity analysis showed that bacteria and fungi were both significantly impacted by land consolidation. Some bacterial and fungal genera were analysed to evaluate the soil ecosystem functions. The abundances of the bacterial genera Catenulispora, Symbiobacterium, Pelotomaculum, and Cytophaga and of the fungal genera Microscypha, Phialocephala, and Hypholoma were significantly higher under land consolidation than without land consolidation. The results of microbial community analysis and functional prediction indicated that land consolidation significantly improved hydrocarbon degradation. Land consolidation may also promote the abundance of genera associated with nitrogen through the implementation of reasonable management practices. In summary, land consolidation can result in better agricultural management and unified planting pattern that promote bacterial diversity and decrease spatial heterogeneity, because of the supervision system.
Changes in Microbial Community Structure under Land Consolidation in Paddy Soils: A Case Study in Eastern China

Abstract:Soil microbial communities are greatly affected by human disturbance and soil physicochemical properties. Land consolidation is an important technology for sustainable agricultural development. However, there are few studies on how land consolidation affects the diversity and structure of soil microbial communities. To understand how land consolidation induced variations in bacterial and fungal communities in soil, we applied a high-throughput sequencing approach of 16S rRNA gene so as to get the information on microbial communities in 20 paddy fields of J County, China. The results showed the huge impact of land consolidation for bacteria as well as fungi, along with the richness and diversity of species critically higher in fields of land consolidation than those not. As for the bacterial communities in fields of land consolidation, the functional diversity of them was also significantly higher, especially nitrogen cycling. The results also showed that the microbial richness and diversity increased in the paddy fields under land consolidation practices of building ditches and applying organic fertilizer compared to others. Interestingly, the relative abundances of heavy-metal tolerant bacteria (Geobacter, Thiobacillus) and fungi (Aspergillus) were increased in the soils from land consolidation areas, which were beneficial microorganisms that could contribute to reduce heavy metal contamination and provide a suitable environment for the growth of plants. Therefore, we concluded that land consolidation could be considered as a viable strategy to improve soil microbial richness and diversity, as well as to increase the abundance of beneficial microorganisms. These findings enhanced our understanding of the importance of land consolidation for increasing the soil microbial diversity and improving soil quality.
Evaluation and application of landscape ecological effects before and after land consolidation

Abstract:In order to quantitatively evaluate landscape ecological effects before and after land consolidation,a land consolidation landscape ecological effects evaluation system,which contains four levels and fourteen indexes,is constructed.Comprehensively landscape and ecology effects are considered and relevant theories of landscape ecology are applied.AHP is used to determine index weight and apply comparative analysis method to determine indicators division level and scores.The evaluation system is applied to evaluate the landscape ecological effect of a land consolidation project,which is located at Hanshan Country,Anhui Province.The results show that contribution rate of comprehensive landscape ecological effects is 13.86％ in the land consolidation project,which plays a certain improvement role in regional ecological environment and landscape functional although there is also a large room for improvement.
The Micro Administrative Mechanism of Land Reallocation in Land Consolidation: A Perspective from Collective Action

Abstract:The implementation of land reallocation is stagnant in China for many reasons, among which the non-cooperation of farmers is a critical one. Although extensive research has been conducted to promote land reallocation, it is mainly confined to macro administrative or technical aspects, leaving studies on the micro administrative mechanism still absent. This paper deeply investigates incentives of farmers to participate in land reallocation, based on which we novelly analyse the interactions among farmers under two different scenarios. The results show that the number and heterogeneity of households involved in land reallocation make significant differences on achievement of collective action, and local governors should choose their strategies according to structure of the stakeholders group. Specifically, in land consolidation projects which involve a large-size group of small households, reducing costs incurred by the endowment effect is imperative. In projects which involve a small group of heterogeneous households, strategy that combines granting priority to small households in choosing land and constructing a farmland relative value system helps to reach agreements among households. In addition, an illustrative case study of Pengze project in Jiangxi province shows that introduction of land transfer in land consolidation projects can change structure of the stakeholders group, thereby facilitating implementation of land reallocation. Hence, a combination of land transfer and land consolidation projects can be a good solution to the stagnation of land reallocation.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to analyze quantitatively the impact of the farmland consolidation on landscape pattern and provide advices for improvement in the planning and design of the farmland consolidation project,by analyzing the present farmland consolidation practice which pays more attention to the quantity of arable land rather than the quality and the ecological protection.Methods of documentation and case study were employed.By comparing the landscape index before and after the farmland consolidation of Beineiyang area at Dongyuan town,Longhai city in Fujian province,it is found that the average acreage of landscape patch increased,the fractal dimension of landscape decreased,the stability of landscape patch increased and the fragmentation of landscape decreased.However,the dominant landscape diversity index decreased,which reduced the self-structure,stability and went against the sustainability of the landscape system.Farmland consolidation is a multi-purpose engineering and the sustainable development can only be achieved by balancing the objectives of increasing the quantity and improving the quality of arable land,protecting the ecological landscape and improving the soil-water environment.

Abstract:It is widely accepted that fragmented land ownership tends to decrease farmland productivity (Pašakarnis and Maliene 2010; Latruffe and Piet 2014; Jürgenson 2016; Zang et al. 2019). As a result, the concept of land consolidation appeared in the 14th century in Europe (Demetriou et al. 2012; Liu and Zhao 2017). It was originally designed as an agriculture-oriented policy tool and defined as readjustment and reallocation of arable land parcels to improve their quality and quantity (Vitikainen 2004; Pašakarnis and Maliene 2010; Hiironen and Riekkinen 2016; Zhou et al. 2020). However, this traditional understanding of land consolidation has evolved due to the development of the modern society. Alongside the urbanization and industrialization processes, a large extension of land is in need of urban infrastructure construction and urban planning, which gives incentive to reorganize the rural land (Tan and Zhou 2015; R. Wang et al. 2019). Besides, rural–urban inequity also raises the demand for modernization in rural areas (Crecente et al. 2002; Liu 2014). Furthermore, the protection of the living conditions and ecological environment calls for an urgent care of rural land use (Foster et al. 2003). All these issues can be solved also by means of land rearrangement. In the 1990s, some western European countries started to regard land consolidation as a tool to fulfill public demands (Pašakarnis and Maliene 2010). Then, land consolidation was promoted as an indispensable measure for integrated rural development (Thomas 2006). Though many developing countries have implemented land consolidation policies, not all of these practices achieved the expected results (van Dijk 2007; Janus and Markuszewska 2017). Policy-makers may face heterogeneous social obstacles such as lack of public participation, overregulation by the government, lack of government capacity, food security issues, or problems related to undeveloped rural regions (Lisec et al. 2014; Djanibekov and Finger 2018; Ahmed et al. 2018; Nguyen and Warr 2020). Abstract:Eco-environmental sustainability is the basis for sustainable development in ecologically fragile areas. Land consolidation plays an important role in coordinating human-land relationships and achieving economic growth and eco-environment protection. Taking the Loess Plateau as the study area, this paper diagnoses the associated eco-environmental problems and their chain effect. The research results show that the overall eco-environment of the region is still relatively fragile. An eco-environment multi-subject co-management model, a scale-differentiated management model, and an elements comprehensive management model are proposed to improve the eco-environmental management efficiency after implementing land consolidation in the plateau. This paper takes the Gully Land Consolidation Project in Baota district of Yan'an city in Shaanxi province as an example to illustrate the relationship between land consolidation and eco-environmental sustainability in the Loess Plateau. Policy implications for eco-environmental protection in the Loess Plateau are proposed.

Abstract:The concept and characteristics of engineering designs on sustainable agricultural land consolidation project were discussed in this paper. Principles, basic methods and procedures of engineering designs on agricultural land consolidation project were put forward, which were successfully adopted for designing agricultural land consolidation in Xuemeiyang region of Changtai County, including diversity designs of sustainable land use, engineering designs of soil improvement, roads, ditches, and drains for protecting existent animal environments, and design of ecological shelter-forests in farmland. Moreover, from sustainable economic, ecological and social points, the results of these engineering designs were evaluated based on fouteen important indexes. After carrying out these engineeringdesigns, the eco-environments and agricultural production conditions were significantly improved, and the farm income was increased in planned regions.
Evaluation of ecological effect and landscape pattern in land consolidation project

Abstract:Constrained by research extent, evaluation of ecological effect in land consolidation project is relatively lacking at present. In addition, attention has rarely been paid to the systematic analysis of optimized goals of landscape pattern and ecological effect in land consolidation planning. Based on GIS and landscape metrics, this paper made an evaluation of the ecological effect by a proposed indices system towards the optimized landscape pattern through a typical land consolidation project. The proposed evaluation indices were oriented to five goals including promoting bio-diversity, maintaining material and energy circulation, stabilizing landscape pattern, keeping the level of life environment quality, and increasing ecological service value. The result of the employed land consolidation project in the paper showed both positive and negative ecological effect. The positive effect was indicated by the increased largest patch area, contagion index, corridor width and connectivity, corridor buffers, vegetation cover and strengthened functional zone along with the decreased patch density. Meanwhile, negative effect was manifested by the increased landscape diversity, decreased fraction dimension and reduced ecological service value. The paper thus finally suggested that landscape design and ecological protection must be taken into account in land consolidation planning.
Comprehensive assessment of paddy soil quality under land consolidation: a novel perspective of microbiology.

Abstract:Soil quality assessment is an important means to demonstrate how effective land consolidation is. However, the existing assessment system is not sufficient to reflect actual soil quality. So, the purpose of this study is to integrate abiological and biological indicators into a comprehensive assessment to evaluate the paddy soil quality under different land consolidation practices. Soil samples were collected from 35 paddy sites under different land consolidation practices including land merging, land leveling (LL), ditch construction (DC) and application of organic fertilizer (AO). A total of 10 paddy sites were selected under conventional tillage (CT) from non-land consolidation area as a control group in Y county, China. The results indicated that soil organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus, bacterial functional diversity (BFD), bacterial and fungal abundances were significantly improved. Fields under LL, among all the land consolidation practices, might still face the risk of land degradation caused by low TN, OM and microbial diversity. High microbial biomass, BFD and OM were significantly higher in fields under AO in nutrient cycle. According to the results of comprehensive assessment, the samples with severe heavy metal contamination and low microbial diversity were generally concentrated in CT. These results indicated that land consolidation was an efficient technique to improve soil quality and could achieve higher quality of agricultural products.

Abstract:Land consolidation is widely used as a powerful tool for land use management in many countries. In order to objectively reveal the current research status in the field of land consolidation, this paper uses the Bibliometrix and Biblioshiny software packages, and VOSviewer to analyze the literature in the field of land consolidation in the last 20 years of the Web of Science Core Collection Database. The results show that: (1) In the past two decades, the annual publication of papers on land consolidation rose. It can be divided into three stages: 2000–2007 for the embryonic period, 2008–2012 for the long-term, and 2013–2020 for the high-yield period. (2) Land consolidation studies covered 68 countries or regions. The top three countries were China, Poland, and the United States. China and the United States played an important role in international cooperation in the field of land consolidation, and Turkey mainly conducted independent research in the field of land consolidation. (3) Land consolidation, reclamation, China, remote sensing, and land fragmentation were the high-frequency keywords in the field of land consolidation in recent years. (4) The research focusing on the field of land consolidation involved its development course, its impact on ecosystem services, and the evaluation of its benefits. (5) The theme of land consolidation studies was shunted and evolved over time, and nine evolution paths could be summarized in the studies of cultivated land fragmentation, development course of land consolidation, and impacts of land consolidation on soil. Finally, this paper predicted the future research directions of land consolidation: exploring new methods for evaluating the benefits of land consolidation, the scale effects of the impact of land consolidation on ecosystem services, research on the mechanism and comprehensive effects of land consolidation on soil, research on land consolidation and rural revitalization, and land consolidation theory research.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to summarize the underlined progress of land science related research published in Nature andScience from 2000 to 2016, and to provide the outlook for the leading edge of land science in these two magazines. The method of literature review is applied in this paper. The results show that 1)land resource protection, ecological effects of land use, land carbon emissions, effects of urbanization, farmland intensive utilization and land management strategies are the major concerns on land science related topics ofNature andScience; 2)These two magazines mainly devote to the global land issues, involving diversified data and multidisciplinary research methods characterized by originality, importance and crossing. It is concluded that global natural resource mapping and accounting, global land change mapping and monitoring, global farmland use program, interrelationship between land and social-ecologic system and novel strategic system for land administration should be the underlined direction for land science in nearly future.

Abstract:As a kind of activity to break down the original land ecosystem, land consolidation causes the ecosystem to undergo a process of "stability-unstable-stable". The Chaohu Lake Basin is a typical traditional agricultural planting area and extensive implementation of large-scale land consolidation projects. By monitoring the impact of land consolidation activities in a specific time period in the basin on the project areas and surrounding environment, the spatial and temporal impacts of large-scale land consolidation on regional eco-environmental quality are analyzed. This study mainly monitors crop growth, soil moisture and temperature changes in the land consolidation project area, and the corresponding changes in the surrounding environment. The response of ecological environment factors caused by land consolidation can be embodied in indicators such as humidity, greenness, heat and dryness. Four indicators of NDVI, WET, LST, and NDBSI were selected, using principal component analysis, monitoring the environmental quality changes in the land consolidation areas of Chaohu Lake Basin. Result shows that the ecological environmental quality of the study area exhibits long-term convergence and short-term divergence, and the correlation between the ecological indicators is not significant. The average contribution rate of the first principal component eigenvalue is 67.94 %. The implementation period of the land consolidation project will seriously interfere with the ecological environment, but it can be restored within 3-5 years after implementation, and the ecological environmental quality of the project area will continue to improve. Land consolidation not only can improve the quality of the ecological environment in the consolidation area, but also can promote the surrounding environment. The findings provide theoretical basis and decision guidance for the improvement of land consolidation planning and design (reconstruction) in China, and offer suggestions on strategy-oriented support and scientific basis for promoting the long-term development of land consolidation worldwide.
