Abstract:The population of the Tonkin Snub-nosed Monkey (Rhinopithecus avunculus) in Cao - Ta - Tung forest of Quan Ba district, Ha Giang province is approximately from 10 to 20 individuals. Because the distribution of this population is located outside of a special-use forest, the habitat of the species is fragmented and continuing to decline due to agricultural expansion and human disturbance. The research results showed that the main livelihood of local people is growing corn and cardamom. There are still activities of forest product exploitation, mainly for firewood. Five major threats to the population of Rhinopithecus avunculus in Cao - Ta - Tung forest are hunting activities, timber logging, non-timber forest product exploitation, deforestation for farming, and cardamom cultivation. The activities of local people in Va Thang 2, Ta Van and Chong Chai villages have a very high level of threat, while Cha Phin and Ban Thang villages have a high level of threat. The expansion of the planting area of cardamom (Amomum tsao) under the forest canopy by local people has made the forest area shrink, which has seriously affected the habitat of the population. In order to protect the habitat and population of the Tonkin Snub-nosed Monkey in Quan Ba district, the following conservation measure should be considered: i) Establish the Quan Ba Tonkin Snub-nosed Monkey Species and Habitat Conservation Area; ii) Take measures to prevent the expansion of cardamom cultivation under the forest canopy; iii) Enhance communication to raise public awareness on this species protection, forest protection as well as biodiversity conservation; and iv) Develop livelihood models for local communities to improve living standards and reduce pressure on forests.
No evidence for mitochondrial genetic variability in the largest population of critically endangered Tonkin snub-nosed monkeys in Vietnam

Abstract:The Tonkin snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus avunculus) with a global population of <250 is listed as critically endangered. It is endemic to northeastern Vietnam and was feared extinct until its rediscovery in 1989. The largest single population of R. avunculus consists of 125–130 individuals in an area of forest called Khau Ca in Ha Giang Province. We used non-invasively collected fecal samples to establish the amount of genetic diversity in this population based on mitochondrial information. We amplified and sequenced a 467- to 650-bp section of the hypervariable region I (HVI) of the mitochondrial D-loop for 201 samples and reconstructed the full mitochondrial genomes for five samples based on metagenomic data. All 201 HVI sequences were identical and no variability was found in the five mitochondrial genomes. Our results highlight the immediate need for a comprehensive assessment of the genetic diversity of all populations of R. avunculus based on mitochondrial and nuclear markers. The latter need to be developed for this species.

Abstract:Habitat destruction, land conversion, and forest fragmentation over the past several decades have resulted in major declines and local extirpation of wild animal and plant species. The gray snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus brelichi) is currently listed among the 25 most endangered primate species in the world, with an estimated remaining wild population of less than 400 individuals. Given the potential negative effects of small population size on genetic diversity, we investigated how factors, such as climate, inbreeding, kinship, population structure, and effective population size, have contributed to their genetic status. We extracted DNA from 307 fecal samples and analyzed microsatellite diversity, sex-identifying genes, and the mtDNA control region in 179 wild individuals. Our analyses suggest that gray snub-nosed monkeys experienced an initial population decline during the Last Glacial Maximum, some 20,000 years ago. During the past 70 years, this species experienced a second, steeper population decline, coinciding with human activities. Their current effective population size (± SD) of 675 ± 292 exceeds the remaining number of individuals in the population and has declined by 93.9

Abstract:In 1750 Pierre Poivre donated the holotype of the douc monkey Pygathrix nemaeus to R.-A. F. de Réaumur. Its type locality is here restricted from "Cochinchine" to near Da Nang, Vietnam. In 1757, Buffon appropriated the holotype for the King's collection, wrongly inferring that the species lacks ischial callosities, and conflating it with the sifaka of Madagascar. "D'ouc" is evidently a corruption of Voọc, the Vietnamese word for colobine monkey. In 1819, a French crew shot 100 doucs before breakfast on a mountain near Da Nang. In 2016, the whole mountain population was estimated at 70. By 1831 doucs had learnt to fear gunfire, but locals accepted their proximity, and provided some protection from meat-seeking foreigners. Several doucs were collected for museums in the 19th and 20th century; in 1897 two even lived for a fortnight at the Jardin des Plantes, Paris. The douc was observed and collected near Da Nang during its miraculous survival of the Vietnam War; its evergreen forest habitat surprisingly resilient. This situation is rapidly deteriorating, as forests are reduced to isolated pockets, and hunting prohibitions unenforced. The closely-monitored Mount Son Tra douc population was expanding, but tourist development is illegally eroding the Nature Reserve.

New distribution records for the endangered black-and-white snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus bieti) in Yunnan, China

Abstract:Black-and-white snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti) is an IUCN-Endangered primate endemic to China. There are currently 15 groups separated into five units based on genetic and geographic character analysis. Among these, the southern groups being on the species' most marginal distribution is the most susceptible to extinct in the near future due to most forest fragmentation and human activities. To determine the population dynamics and conversation needs in the southern unit, we conducted interviews and investigation-based interviews in Yunlong and Lanping Counties from December 2013 to February 2018. A new group contains approximately > 10 members, Tianchi group, was found in Tianchi National Nature Reserve and a known group with approximately > 20 R. bieti individuals, Heishan group, which had historically disappeared, was rediscovered in Yunling National Nature Reserve in the southern unit. As a consequence of this survey, the number of groups in the southern unit has increased from three to five, and the total groups has increased from 15 to 17, and the Tianchi group has become the southernmost group and totally isolated group with irreplaceable conservation value. These results indicate that R. bieti groups in the species' southern distribution range may be undergoing recovery and that nature reserves are playing a critical role in conservation efforts. However, small group size, highly fragmented habitats, and marginal distribution in reserves mean that these two groups are still vulnerable to extinction. We accordingly make recommendations and propose management policies for their protection: the Chinese government should commit to protect the new groups by funding academic research and conservation; the reserves, conservationists, and NGOs should take appropriate actions to ensure the establishment of long-term survey and monitoring programs.
Two Endemic Primates’ Species in China: Hainan Gibbon and Guizhou Snub-Nosed Monkey

Abstract:Hainan gibbon (Nomascus hainanus) is the most threatened species of gibbon, the endemic primates of China. Currently, there were only 4 groups no more than 30 individuals left, which is only distributed in a 16 km2 area (H: 800–1280 m) of Bawangling National Nature Reserve of Hainan island in China. The social structure of the Hainan gibbon is polygynous, with one adult male pairing with two adult females. Hainan gibbon research has always been one of the hot spots of primate research, mainly concentrated in ecology, behavior, and genetic research. Here, we mainly reported the classification, historical population changes, community structure, dietary, reproductive and song behavior of Hainan gibbon. We also reported the other unique primate of China: Guizhou snub-nosed monkey.

Abstract:Snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus), or golden monkeys, are members of the subfamily Colobinae, family Cercopithecinae. They are very beautiful creatures, but are now distributed in very limited areas. The Sichuan species (Rhinopithecus roxellana), the Yunnan species (R. bieti), and the Guizhou species (R. brelichi) are endemic to China (Figure 1). Together with the Vietnamese species (R. avunculus), they were originally regarded as one genus (Napier and Napier, 1967). More recently they have been split, the Chinese forms being classified as one subgenus (R. [Rhinopithecus]) and the Vietnamese as another subgenus (R. [Prebytiscus]) (Jablonski and Peng, 1993; Jablonski, 1998a). Though limited to isolated regions, they form a graded array of species from R. avunculus in subtropical evergreen and deciduous broad-leaf forests at less than 1,000 m altitude to R. bieti in temperate, coniferous forests as high as 3,000 to 4,500 m where annual average temperatures hover near freezing (Pan and Yong, 1989; Boonratana and Le, 1998).

Abstract:The snub-nosed monkey genus Rhinopithecus (Colobinae) comprises five species (Rhinopithecus roxellana, Rhinopithecus brelichi, Rhinopithecus bieti, Rhinopithecus strykeri, and Rhinopithecus avunculus). They are range-restricted species occurring only in small areas in China, Vietnam, and Myanmar. All extant species are listed as endangered or critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, all with decreasing populations. With the development of molecular genetics and the improvement and cost reduction in whole-genome sequencing, knowledge about evolutionary processes has improved largely in recent years. Here, we review recent major advances in snub-nosed monkey genetics and genomics and their impact on our understanding of the phylogeny, phylogeography, population genetic structure, landscape genetics, demographic history, and molecular mechanisms of adaptation to folivory and high altitudes in this primate genus. We further discuss future directions in this research field, in particular how genomic information can contribute to the conservation of snub-nosed monkeys.

The Potential Distribution and Disappearing of Yunnan Snub-Nosed Monkey: Influences of Habitat Fragmentation

Abstract:Analysis: of environmental variables and organism occurrence records offers insight that can be used to predict potential distribution areas and habitat fragmentation. For large landscapes, modeling is the most convenient and effective way to conduct habitat research. Two species distribution models, BIOMOD2 and FRAGSTATS 4.2, were given data on environmental variables and organism occurrence records as input and used to predict the potential suitable habitat and habitat fragmentation for the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti). Our results estimated the total area of potentially suitable habitat for R. bieti as 7412.82 km(2), but only 4164.58 km(2) was found to be inhabited by R. bieti. We found that the main land cover type in the potential suitable distribution area of R. bieti was evergreen needle-leaf forest (6153.95 km(2), 83.02%). Comparison of inhabited and suitable but uninhabited habitats showed that areas actually inhabited by R. bieti had a lower patch density (PD) and higher largest patch index (LPI) than uninhabited habitats only in evergreen needle-leaf forest. The potential suitable habitats of R. bieti has increased significantly, but the actual distribution has shrunk from 1997 to 2017. Although the government has made great progress in protecting R. bieti, logging that took place before the regulations and the boundary effect of roads and rivers resulted in the local extinction of R. bieti in some potentially suitable areas. In view of this, we propose to establish a national park for Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys. We also suggest protecting the potentially suitable but currently empty habitats for later release of R. bieti. Successfully reintroducing R. bieti into areas where it formerly lived will require continual and careful habitat monitoring. (C) 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
Studying the Tonkean macaques of Strasbourg, a tale full of sound and fury

Abstract:In this paper, I chronicle the Strasbourg population of Tonkean macaques (Macaca tonkeana) over a period of half a century. In 1972, Tonkean macaques were imported from Sulawesi, Indonesia, to eastern France, leading to the establishment of two social groups in the Strasbourg region several years later. Our research team studied the social behavior and cognitive abilities of these Tonkean macaques for four decades. The species is characterized by a high degree of social tolerance. This has proven to be very informative in comparative studies of macaque social behavior, opening a new perspective on the evolution of primate societies. Over the years, the population has grown, and more social groups have been formed. However, the fact that some of the Tonkean macaques were healthy carriers of the herpes B virus led to disagreements over their management and eventually to the elimination of the positive individuals. Many individuals from the Strasbourg population are now kept in sanctuaries, and the number of captive breeding groups is limited. We still have much to learn about Tonkean macaques and there is a need for studies carried out in their native habitat in Sulawesi.

Abstract:Population size is a critical indicator used to assess the demographic profile and conservation status of animal species living in disturbed habitats. Using GIS technology, we calculated the remaining habitat area and estimated the population size of the Guizhou snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus brelichi), an Endangered primate endemic to China. The last remaining population of this species resides in the Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve (FNNR). We combined data on forest cover and patterns of group movement to estimate the size and continuity of their habitat. The results indicated that the area of remaining suitable habitat is 69.6 km(2). However the monkeys are confined to an area of only 27.8 km(2) (6.6% of the total reserve area of 419 km(2)) located in the northern part of the reserve. The remaining 28.5 km(2) of suitable habitat is located in the southern part of the reserve and inaccessible to the monkeys because of the recent construction of an aerial tram. Based on estimates of population density, we calculated that the remaining world's population of R. brelichi is approximately 125-336 individuals. In order to protect this species from extinction, we recommend that the highly fragmented evergreen and deciduous broadleaf mixed forest adjacent to the remaining troop's home range be given protected status and an active program of forest regeneration in this area be implemented immediately. Genetic Diversity, Inbreeding Level, and Genetic Load in Endangered Snub-Nosed Monkeys (Rhinopithecus)

Abstract:The snub-nosed monkey genus ( Rhinopithecus ) comprises five closely related species ( R. avunculus, R. bieti, R. brelichi, R. roxellana , and R. strykeri ). All are among the world's rarest and most endangered primates. However, the genomic impact associated with their population decline remains unknown. We analyzed population genomic data of all five snub-nosed monkey species to assess their genetic diversity, inbreeding level, and genetic load. For R. roxellana, R. bieti , and R. strykeri , population size is positively correlated with genetic diversity and negatively correlated with levels of inbreeding. Other species, however, which possess small population sizes, such as R. brelichi and R. avunculus , show high levels of genetic diversity and low levels of genomic inbreeding. Similarly, in the three populations of R. roxellana , the Shennongjia population, which possesses the lowest population size, displays a higher level of genetic diversity and lower level of genomic inbreeding. These findings suggest that although R. brelichi and R. avunculus and the Shennongjia population might be at risk, it possess significant genetic diversity and could thus help strengthen their long-term survival potential. Intriguingly, R. roxellana with large population size possess high genetic diversity and low level of genetic load, but they show the highest recent inbreeding level compared with the other snub-nosed monkeys. This suggests that, despite its large population size, R. roxellana has likely been experiencing recent inbreeding, which has not yet affected its mutational load and fitness. Analyses of homozygous-derived deleterious mutations identified in all snub-nosed monkey species indicate that these mutations are affecting immune, especially in smaller population sizes, indicating that the long-term consequences of inbreeding may be resulting in an overall reduction of immune capability in the snub-nosed monkeys, which could provide a dramatic effect on their long-term survival prospects. Altogether, our study provides valuable information concerning the genomic impact of population decline of the snub-nosed monkeys. We revealed multiple counterintuitive and unexpected patterns of genetic diversity in small and large population, which will be essential for conservation management of these endangered species.

Abstract:In 2022, long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis), a once ubiquitous primate species, was elevated to Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. In 2023, recognizing that the long-tailed macaque is threatened by multiple factors: (1) declining native habitats across Southeast Asia; (2) overutilization for scientific, commercial, and recreational purposes; (3) inadequate regulatory mechanisms; and (4) culling due to human-macaque conflicts, a petition for rulemaking was submitted to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to add the species to the US Endangered Species Act, the nation's most effective law to protect at risk species. The long-tailed macaque remains unprotected across much of its geographical range despite the documented continual decline of the species and related sub-species and the recent IUCN reassessment. This commentary presents a review of the factors that have contributed to the dramatic decline of this keystone species and makes a case for raising the level of protection they receive.
Recovery of the Critically Endangered Hainan Gibbon Nomascus Hainanus

Abstract:AbstractThe Critically Endangered Hainan gibbonNomascus hainanusis one of the most threatened primate species and is now found only in the Bawangling National Nature Reserve of Hainan Province, China. We describe changes in population dynamics, and the current number of individuals, based on historical sources and fieldwork during 2002–2013. The population comprises a total of 20 individuals (including six solitary males) in three separate groups. All are confined to an area of c. 16 km2. The current population developed from two groups that comprised a total of 13 individuals in 2002, and has increased slowly since then, with the addition of one new group. Population increase is hindered by the gibbon's unique social structure of one adult male and two adult females, as well as the reproductive age limit in adult females. An imbalance in the sex ratio of offspring may also have hindered population recovery but further investigation of this is required. Our findings indicate that the Hainan gibbon is likely to remain Critically Endangered in the coming decades.
Effects of habitat fragmentation and human disturbance on the population dynamics of the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey from 1994 to 2016

Abstract:In this study, we integrate data from field investigations, spatial analysis, genetic analysis, and Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) to evaluate the effects of habitat fragmentation on the population dynamics, genetic diversity, and range shifts in the endangered Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti). The results indicate that from 1994 to 2016, R. bieti population size increased from less than 2,000 to approximately 3,000 individuals. A primary factor promoting population recovery was the establishment of protected nature reserves. We also found that subpopulation growth rates were uneven, with the groups in some areas, and the formation of new groups. Both the fragmentation index, defined as the ratio of the number of forest patches to the total area of forest patches (e.g., increased fragmentation), and increasing human population size had a negative effect on population growth in R. bieti. We recommend that government conservation plans prioritize the protection of particular R. bieti populations, such as the Baimei and Jisichang populations, which have uncommon haplotypes. In addition, effective conservation strategies need to include an expansion of migration corridors to enable individuals from larger populations such as Guyoulong (Guilong) to serve as a source population to increase the genetic diversity of smaller R. bieti subpopulations. We argue that policies designed to protect endangered primates should not focus solely on total population size but also need to determine the amount of genetic diversity present across different subpopulations and use this information as a measure of the effectiveness of current conservation policies and the basis for new conservation policies.
Conservation priorities for threatened mammals of Vietnam: Implementation of the IUCN ́s One Plan Approach

Abstract:Vietnam belongs to one of the most well-known global biodiversity hotspots. However, its biodiversity is being threatened by multiple factors such as rapid growth of the human population, habitat destruction, overexploitation, and climate change. To better prioritize conservation measures for Vietnam's mammal fauna, this study attempts to identify the threat status, level of endemism, and protected area coverage for approximately 329 recognized taxa. In addition, ex situ conservation measures are investigated by analyzing zoo databases. Our results show that as many as 112 mammal species (~34%) in Vietnam are officially listed as threatened, 36 (~11%) are country endemics, and nine (~3%) are micro-endemic. Nearly all threatened species are currently covered by protected areas, except for two species of high conservation importance, i.e., the micro-endemic Murina harpioloides ( Chiroptera ) and the threatened Lepus sinensis ( Lagomorpha ). Our results also suggest that such areas as Hoang Lien Range, northeastern Vietnam, and the central and southern Annamite Mountains require more conservation attention, as they harbor a high number of endemic species. Analyses of the Zoological Information Management System reveal that roughly 60% (67 species) of threatened species are currently kept in zoos ( ex situ ) across the world, while none of the species listed as "Data Deficient" are currently represented in any ex situ program. Up to 66% of 89 species kept in zoos show a good number of breeding successes in the past 12 months. It is recommended that future conservation efforts focus on unprotected threatened mammals and on evaluating the threat status for "Data Deficient" species. Additionally, the existing protected area system's effectiveness should be improved by creating corridors to provide connectivity for highly mobile and widely distributed mammal species.

Abstract:Interviews with local people and a survey were carried out in 23 counties of south-west Guangxi Province from April 2002 to June 2003 to evaluate the conservation status of Francois' langur Trachypithecus francoisi and assess the extent and nature of threats to the species' survival. Francois' langurs were found in only 10 counties compared with their presence in 23 counties before 1990. The total population size is estimated to be 307 individuals in 14 isolated populations. This represents a 90% decrease in population size since the early 1980s and an 85% decrease since the mid 1990s. The primary threat to the langur is hunting, mainly for traditional medicine. Our results suggest that conservation efforts for the species have been ineffectual during the last decade and, even within reserves, few direct management measures seem to have been taken to protect and conserve the langurs. Without the instigation of such measures it seems likely that Francois' langur will disappear both inside and outside reserves. To ensure the long-term survival of Francois' langur in Guangxi Province increased investment and improved management, planning, and training of reserve managers and staff is required, with a particular focus on the key remaining reserves and sites for the langur. Some of this work is now underway.

Abstract:François' langur is an Endangered colobine inhabiting limestone habitats in southern China and northern Vietnam. Its global population has been estimated to be just more than 2000 mature individuals. Populations in Vietnam are highly fragmented with reportedly fewer than 200 adults in total and 50 in a single location. Although the François' langur in Vietnam is highly imperiled as remnant populations persist in only three to four sites, little research has been carried out to provide a reliable estimate of its remaining population. In this study, we conducted field surveys in Lam Binh District, Tuyen Quang Province, northeastern Vietnam. In total, we recorded at least 16 groups of François' langurs, with 156 individuals, raising the total number of individuals by approximately 10% compared to a previous study. The group structure, group size, activity budget, and density of the Lam Binh population resemble those reported in François' langurs in China and other limestone langur species. The results show that the behavior ecology of limestone langurs significantly differs from that of forest langurs probably because they occupy separate habitats with distinctly different environmental variables. During our surveys, we detected a number of direct threats to this population, namely illegal logging, hunting, firewood collecting, hydropower development, grazing, and mining. It is recommended that the protection forest be elevated to the nature reserve status to better protect the most important population of the François' langur in Vietnam.

The Conservation Implications of the Gut Microbiome for Protecting the Critically Endangered Gray Snub-Nosed Monkey (Rhinopithecus brelichi)

Abstract:The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in regulating energy metabolism, facilitating nutrient absorption, and supporting immune function, thereby assisting the host in adapting to seasonal dietary changes. Here, we compare the gut microbiome composition of wild gray snub-nosed monkeys during winter (from October to December) and spring (from January to March) to understand differences in seasonal nutrient intake patterns. Snub-nosed monkeys are foregut fermenters and consume difficult-to-digest carbohydrates and lichen. To examine the digestive adaptations of gray snub-nosed monkeys, we collected 14 fresh fecal samples for DNA analysis during the winter and spring. Based on 16S rRNA sequencing, metagenomic sequencing, and functional metagenomic analyses, we identified that Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, and Bacteroidetes constitute a keystone bacterial group in the gut microbiota during winter and spring and are responsible for degrading cellulose. Moreover, the transition in dietary composition from winter to spring was accompanied by changes in gut microbiota composition, demonstrating adaptive responses to varying food sources and availability. In winter, the bacterial species of the genera Streptococcus were found in higher abundance. At the functional level, these bacteria are involved in fructose and mannose metabolism and galactose metabolism c-related pathways, which facilitate the breakdown of glycogen, starch, and fiber found in fruits, seeds, and mature leaves. During spring, there was an increased abundance of bacteria species from the Prevotella and Lactobacillus genera, which aid the digestion of protein-rich buds. Combined, these findings reveal how the gut microbiota adjusts to fluctuations in energy balance and nutrient intake across different seasons in this critically endangered species. Moreover, we also identified Pseudomonas in two samples; the presence of potential pathogens within the gut could pose a risk to other troop members. Our findings highlight the necessity of a conservation plan that focuses on protecting vegetation and implementing measures to prevent disease transmission for this critically endangered species.

Abstract:Forest loss and overhunting are eroding African tropical biodiversity and threatening local human food security, livelihoods, and health. Emblematic of this ecological crisis is Africa's most endangered group of monkeys, the red colobus (genus Piliocolobus). All 17 species, found in forests from Senegal in the west to the Zanzibar archipelago in the east, are threatened with extinction. Red colobus are among the most vulnerable mammals to gun hunting, typically disappearing from heavily hunted forests before most other large‐bodied animals. Despite their conservation status, they are rarely a focus of conservation attention and continue to be understudied. However, red colobus can act as critical barometers of forest health and serve as flagships for catalyzing broader African tropical forest conservation efforts. We offer a plan for conservation of red colobus and their habitats and discuss conservation and policy implications.
