Abstract:Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic and potentially malignant inflammatory disorder with a malignancy rate ranging from 0 to 3.5%. In this report, we present a case of plaque/atrophic OLP that progressed to squamous cell carcinoma 18 months after the initial diagnosis. The patient, a 62-year-old white man, initially presented with white plaques on the dorsum of the tongue and symptomatic atrophic areas on the lingual apex, which were diagnosed as OLP following a histopathological examination. After nine months of follow-up, the lesions transformed into ulcerated areas, and a subsequent histopathological examination revealed moderate epithelial dysplasia.
