Abstract:Due to their highly exposed active sites and high aspect ratio caused by their substantial lateral dimension and thin thickness, two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets are currently considered a potential hybrid material for electrochemical sensing. Herein, we present a nickel-based porphyrinic MOF nanosheet as a versatile and robust platform with an enhanced electrochemical detection performance. It is important to note that the nickel porphyrin ligand reacted with Cu(NO3)2·3H2O in a solvothermal process, with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) acting as the surfactant to control the anisotropic development of creating a 2D Cu-TCPP(Ni) MOF nanosheet structure. To realize the exceptional selectivity, sensitivity, and stability of the synthesized 2D Cu-TCPP(Ni) MOF nanosheet, a laser-induced graphene electrode was modified with the MOF nanosheet and employed as a sensor for the detection of p-nitrophenol (p-NP). With a detection range of 0.5-200 μM for differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and 0.9-300 μM for cyclic voltammetry (CV), the proposed sensor demonstrated enhanced electrochemical performance, with the limit of detection (LOD) for DPV and CV as 0.1 and 0.3 μM, respectively. The outstanding outcome of the sensor is attributed to the 2D Cu-TCPP(Ni) MOF nanosheet's substantial active surface area, innate catalytic activity, and superior adsorption capacity. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the proposed electrode sensor will make it possible to create high-performance electrochemical sensors for environmental point-of-care testing since it successfully detected p-NP in real sample analysis.

Abstract:AbstractThe poor electrical conductivity of two‐dimensional (2D) crystalline frameworks greatly limits their utilization in optoelectronics and sensor technology. Herein, we describe a conductive metallophthalocyanine‐based NiPc‐CoTAA framework with cobalt(II) tetraaza[14]annulene linkages. The high conjugation across the whole network combined with densely stacked metallophthalocyanine units endows this material with high electrical conductivity, which can be greatly enhanced by doping with iodine. The NiPc‐CoTAA framework was also fabricated as thin films with different thicknesses from 100 to 1000 nm by the steam‐assisted conversion method. These films enabled the detection of low‐concentration gases and exhibited remarkable sensitivity and stability. This study indicates the enormous potential of metallophthalocyanine‐based conductive frameworks in advanced stand‐off chemical sensors and provides a general strategy through tailor‐make molecular design to develop sensitive and stable chemical sensors for the detection of low‐concentration gases.

However, there remains a need to explore structural modification strategies for optimizing the sluggish desorption process caused by the extensive porosity and strong adsorption effect of metal sites. Herein, we reported a 2D bimetallic phthalocyanine-based COF (COF-CuNiPc) as chemiresistive gas sensors that exhibited a high gas-sensing performance to nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Bimetallic COF-CuNiPc with an asymmetric synergistic effect achieves a fast adsorption/desorption process to NO2. It is demonstrated that the COF-CuNiPc can detect 50 ppb NO2 with a recovery time of 7 s assisted by ultraviolet illumination. Compared with single-metal phthalocyanine-based COFs (COF-CuPc and COF-NiPc), the bimetallic structure of COF-CuNiPc can provide a proper band gap to interact with NO2 gas molecules. The CuNiPc heterometallic active site expands the overlap of d-orbitals, and the optimized electronic arrangement accelerates the adsorption/desorption processes. The concept of a synergistic effect enabled by bimetallic phthalocyanines in this work can provide an innovative direction to design high-performance chemiresistive gas sensors.

Abstract:Recently metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted more attention in developing new electrochemical sensors due to their unique properties such as crystalline ordered structures, tunable pore sizes, large surface areas, chemical tenability and thermal stability. However, the direct application of single component MOFs in electrochemistry is limited owing to their poor electronic conductivity and inferior electrocatalytic ability. Herein, Ni(II)-Based metal-organic framework (Ni(II)-MOFs) was successfully anchored on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by in situ solvothermal method for the first time. In the as-prepared composites, 2∼3nm MOFs nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed on conducting CNTs allowed for the MOFs nanoparticles to be wired up to a current collector through the underlying conducting CNTs. As the electrode materials of an non-enzymatic H2O2 biosensor, the Ni(II)-MOFs/CNTs exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance including a wide linear detection range from 0.01 to 51.6mmolL−1, low detection limit of 2.1μmolL−1 and very fast response of 2.5s for H2O2 sensing. Most importantly, the stability and conductivity of Ni(II)-based MOFs is far higher than that of pure MOFs.
Universal synthesis of metallophthalocyanine covalent organic frameworks as ultra-sensitive multifaceted electrochemical sensor

Abstract:The universal synthesis of highly stable covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for ultra-sensitive and multi-component electrochemical detection in different scenarios remains a great challenge. Herein, a series of metallophthalocyanine-based two-dimensional (2D) dioxin (DXI)-linked metalophthalocyanine (MPc)- n DXI-COFs (M = Ni, Zn; n = 1, 2) are afforded in high yield (80%–96%) by a facile trace-quinoline assisted one-pot condensation of tetracarbonitrile precursors. Powder X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy investigations disclose their lamellar texture 2D network with AA stacking mode. Experiments and calculation results elucidate that the 2DXI-linked MPc-2DXI-COFs provide the stronger built-in electronic field and more electrostatic/hydrogen bonding adsorption sites than DXI-linked MPc-DXI-COFs, and the lower electrode reaction Gibbs free energy and stronger adsorption of analytes at NiPc than ZnPc unit, which grants NiPc-2DXI-COF excellent sensing properties for various analytes including neurotransmitters, organic pollutants, and heavy metal ions, with high sensitivity and low detection limit of 0.53 to 25.66 nM. Especially in binary and ternary systems and even in real-world conditions, simultaneous multi-component detection could be achieved.

Abstract:Two novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, [Ni(3-bpmh)(HEA)·2H2O]n (1) and [Zn(3-bpmh)(HEA)·H2O]n (2) (3-bpmh=1,4-bis(3-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene, o-H2HEA=1,2-phenylenediacetic acid), respectively, were hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Single crystal structures revealed that 1 and 2 were two-dimensional structure and two-dimensional (4,4)-topological layer structure respectively. In addition, compound 2 had a selective sensing effect on ions. Therefore, it was possible to detect Cr2O7 2−, CrO4 2− and Fe3+ ions by fluorescence quenching.

Abstract:This paper presents results for four types of morphology-controlled two-dimensional cobalt based tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin metal-organic frameworks (2D Co-TCPP MOFs) with different catalytic properties for nitrite, and an electrochemical sensor was fabricated by the Co-TCPP MOF with superior catalytic properties. The sensor exhibited a high sensitivity of 311.3 μg/g, an extra low detection limit (LOD) of 0.03 μM, and a wide linear range of 0.1–375 μM, which was applied successfully for nitrite detection in water, milk and sausage. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to establish the sensing method, the adsorption structures of nitrite on the surface of Co-TCPP MOF were built and the electrocatalytic mechanism was confirmed. The results explained why the sensor fabricated by a single Co-TCPP MOF exhibited equal or better performance than reported sensors fabricated by composite materials based on a combination of theory and experiment. This work reported a universal electrochemical sensing method for nitrite detection in food based on a single morphology-controlled 2D TCPP MOF, which provided a new and valuable strategy for establishing an efficient food safety determination method guided by theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline materials with high potential for applications in fluorescence sensors. In this work, two solvent-induced Zn(II)–based metal-organic frameworks, Zn3L3(DMF)2 (1) and Zn3L3(DMA)2(H2O)3 (2) (L=4,4′-stilbenedicarboxylic acid), were investigated as selective sensing materials for detection of nitroaromatic compounds and metal ions. The sensing experiments show that 1 and 2 both exhibit selective fluorescence quenching toward nitroaniline with a low detection limit. In addition, 1 exhibits high selectivity for detection of Fe3+ and Al3+ by significant fluorescence quenching or enhancement effect. While for 2, it only exhibits significant fluorescence quenching effect for Fe3+. The results indicate that 1 and 2 are both promising fluorescence sensors for detecting and recognizing nitroaniline and metal ions with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Abstract:Two three-dimensional (3D) nickel-based metal-organic frameworks (Ni(II)-MOFs), {[Ni(adc)(phen)(H 2 O)]} n ( 1 , H 2 adc = 9,10-anthracenedicarboxylic acid, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) and {[Ni(adc)(bpy)]} n ( 2 , bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine), were synthesized via a mixed-ligand strategy under hydrothermal and solvothermal conditions. MOF 1 could be simplified as a binodal tfc topology, while 2 possesses a three-fold interpenetrated framework, which is composed of a 4-connected dia network. The phase purity, molecular vibrations, and thermal stability of 1 and 2 have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). Further electrochemical experiments reveal that 1 and 2 exhibit good methanol/ethanol oxidation (MOR/EOR) activities, with the optimal current density reaching up to 21.2 (EOR: 25.3) and 15.8 (EOR: 15.3) mA cm −2 , respectively. Abstract:Cu-benzenehexathiol (Cu-BHT) has attracted significant attention due to its record high electrical conductivity and crystal defects Cu-2c. However, the nonporous structure and small specific surface area of Cu-BHT with two-dimensional kagome lattice invariably limit its practical application in sensing and catalysis. In this work, Cu-BHT nanotubes (Cu-BHT-NTs) are designed and prepared via a facile homogeneous reaction to solve these problems. Compared with the traditional nanorod-like structure, the Cu-BHT-NTs not only have a higher specific surface area but also possess a higher proportion of crystal defects (66.6%). The successfully configured DPPTT/Cu-BHT-NTs heterostructure organic field-effect transistor (OFET)-based sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity as high as 13 610%, a minimum detection limits down to 5 ppb, and exceptional selectivity to nitric oxide (NO) toxic gases. Theoretical analysis systematically shows that Cu-2c sites in the Cu-BHT-NTs increase the number of electrons transferred from the heterostructure to NO molecules, confirming that the high sensitivity and selectivity result from the high binding between Cu-BHT-NTs and NO molecules. Furthermore, a fully flexible device based on the heterojunction OFET sensor is prepared to ensure the convenience of wearing and carrying gas sensors, opening up a new avenue for the next generation of wearable intelligent electronics.
A novel two-dimensional nickel phthalocyanine-based metal–organic framework for highly efficient water oxidation catalysis

Abstract:Large pi-conjugated conductive two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) via the bottom-up approach have recently emerged as novel and interesting 2D materials. For the first time, herein we demonstrate the design and successful bottom-up fabrication of a novel noble-metal-free nickel phthalocyanine-based 2D MOF (NiPc-MOF) for highly efficient water oxidation catalysis. This NiPc-MOF can be easily grown on various substrates. The thin film deposited on FTO showed high catalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with a very low onset potential (<1.48 V, overpotential < 0.25 V), high mass activity (883.3 A g(-1)), and excellent catalytic durability. To the best of our knowledge, this present 2D MOF film catalyst represents the best OER catalytic activity among molecular catalyst-based materials reported so far. This work represents the first synthesis of a nickel phthalocyanine-based 2D MOF material and application of the pi-conjugated 2D MOF for water oxidation.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (NPs) are installed into a porphyrinic zirconium-based metal–organic framework (Zr-MOF), NU-902, through a postsynthetic modification followed by an ion-exchange process. Both the framework-immobilized Ag(I) ions and partially reduced silver NPs confined within the nanopores of NU-902 with the size of around 3 nm are found in the obtained composite. Abstract:Porous crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one class of promising electrode materials for CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR) by virtue of their large CO2 adsorption capacities and abundant tunable active sites, but their insulating nature usually leads to low current density. Herein, a two-dimensional (2D) Ni-phthalocyanine-based MOF (NiPc-Ni(NH)4) that constructed by 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octaaminophthalocyaninato nickel(II) (NiPc-(NH2)8) and nickel(II) ions attained high electrical conductivity due to the high overlap of d-π conjugation orbitals between the nickel node and the Ni-phthalocyanine substituted o-phenylenediamine. During CO2RR, the NiPc-Ni(NH)4 nanosheets achieved a high CO Faradaic efficiency of 96.4% at −0.7 V and a large CO partial current density of 24.8 mA cm−2 at −1.1 V, which surpass all the reported two-dimensional MOF electrocatalysts evaluated in H-cell. The control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the Ni-N4 units of the phthalocyanine ring are the catalytic active sites. This work provides a new route to the design of highly efficient porous framework materials for the enhanced electrocatalysis via improving electrical conductivity.

Abstract:Nitrite has been linked to a variety of health issues, as well as cancer and oxygen deficiency when its allowable limit is exceeded. Nitrite monitoring and detection are required due to the negative effects on public health. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)-based nanomaterials/composites have recently been shown to have the potential for various biological and medical applications like sensing, imaging, and drug delivery. As a result, this research creates an efficient electrochemical sensor by incorporating MOFs into polyaniline (PANI)/carbon nanotube (CNT) cast on the GCE. In situ oxidative polymerization was used to construct an aluminum succinate MOF (Al-Succin)-incorporated CNT/PANI nanocomposite (PANI/CNT@Al-Succin) and well characterized by various characterization techniques, namely, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and four probes to measure DC electrical conductivity. Cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry techniques were employed to detect nitrite on the surface of PANI/CNT@Al-Succin-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). PANI/CNT@Al-Succin-modified GCE demonstrated good current response and electrocatalytic property towards nitrite compared to bare GCE. The newly synthesized electrode exhibited a high electrocatalytic activity towards nitrite oxidation and showed a linear response ranging from 5.7 to 74.1 μM for CV and 8.55–92.62 μM for LSV. The obtained LOD values for CV (1.16 μM) and LSV (0.08 μM) were significantly below the WHO-defined acceptable nitrite limit in drinking water. Results of recovery studies for real samples of apple juice, orange juice, and bottled water were 98.92%, 99.38%, and 99.90%, respectively. These values show practical usability of PANI/CNT@Al-Succin in real samples.

Abstract:The development of three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured electrode materials has proved to be an effective approach to enhance the electrochemical activity and detection sensitivity of nanocatalysts. In this work, we have developed a type of advanced electrochemical sensor based on the metal–organic framework aerogel by using corresponding Ni sheets and trimesic acid as precursors, and investigated its practical applications in sensitive nitrite detection. 3D MOF aerogels possess large surface areas and rich metal active sites, which is beneficial for improving their catalytic activities towards nitrite detection. The perpared Ni-MOF aerogel has high sensitivity of 261.3 μA cm −2 mM −1 , wide linear range (5 μM–1.52 mM), and low limit value of 0.5 μM, as well as excellent selectivity, reproducibility, and stability, and can be applied to detect nitrite in real samples.

Abstract:The thiol compound N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) functions as an antioxidant in protecting cells from cytotoxic poisoning and has numerous therapeutic applications. Therefore, its quantification holds significance in clinical research. Photoelectrochemical analysis is a fast, low-cost, and efficient technique for such a purpose. However, it is challenging to use it directly for NAC detection. Therefore, in this study, conductive 2D octa-hydroxy-substituted nickel(II) phthalocyanine copper metal-organic framework (NiPc-Cu MOF) as a photo-electrochemical (PEC) sensor was successfully fabricated for enhanced room-temperature NAC determination. As NAC is able to interact with Cu compounds, the NiPc-Cu MOF was used as a PEC sensor for sensitive NAC identification. The photocurrent produced by NiPc-Cu MOF was attenuated after NAC interaction. Under optimal conditions, the sensor accurately monitored NAC concentrations ranging from 0.0125 to 42.5 mu M with an ultra-low limit of detection (5.2 nM). Notably, the methodology provides a straightforward and powerful way to efficiently determine NAC in a highly selective manner, which could be significantly beneficial in pharmaceutical process monitoring and quality control.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) conductive metal-organic frameworks (cMOFs) have emerged as powerful transducers for electrochemical sensing. However, electrochemical sensing in aqueous solutions remains at a very early stage for 2D cMOFs. Herein, the interfacial capacitances of a 2D cMOF are utilized for electrochemical sensing for the first time. Various redox-innocent compounds along with redox-active compounds in aqueous solutions are successfully detected based on the responses of two capacitance peaks at low voltages. The quantitative sensitivity to ascorbic acid is even an order of magnitude higher than the previous voltammetric method. Further investigation demonstrates that the responses are rooted in the pseudocapacitances of the 2D cMOF, i.e., the transitions among the multiple redox states of the ligands. The analytes are suggested to alert the d-p conjugation and exchange electrons with the 2D cMOF. These deep insights in response mechanisms represent an important step for promoting the application of 2D cMOFs in chemical sensing.

Abstract:Electrochemical sensors are indispensable in clinical diagnosis, biochemical detection and environmental monitoring, thanks to their ability to detect analytes in real-time with direct electronic readout. However, electrochemical sensors are challenged by sensitivity - the need to detect low concentrations, and selectivity - to detect specific analytes in multicomponent systems. Herein, a porphyrinic metal-organic framework (PP-MOF), Mn-PCN-222 is deposited on a conductive indium tin oxide (ITO) surface. It affords Mn-PCN-222/ITO, a versatile voltammetric sensor able to detect redox-active analytes such as inorganic ions, organic hazardous substances and pollutants, including nitroaromatics, phenolic and quinone-hydroquinone toxins, heavy metal ions, biological species, as well as azo dyes. As a working electrode, the high surface area of Mn-PCN-222/ITO enables high currents, and therefore leverages highly sensitive analysis. The metalloporphyrin centre facilitates analyte-specific redox catalysis to simultaneously detect more than one analyte in binary and ternary systems allowing for detection of a wide array of trace pollutants under real-world conditions, most with high sensitivity.
