Abstract:The silica-composited biochars (SBC) were synthesized by adding silica particulates into bamboo biomass during pyrolysis at 700 °C to examine the effect of silica addition on biochar stabilities and adsorption properties for tetracycline (TC). Silica addition increased the total pore volume and average pore diameter of biochar due to the abundant mesopores in SBC, but decreased specific surface area due to the blockage of biochar pore with silica particles. Biochar stability was obviously enhanced with silica addition due to the decreased atomic ratio of H/C and O/C, the reduced C loss amount after chemical oxidation treatment, and the increased thermal stability. The adsorption capacities of SBC for TC were greatly enhanced with silica addition and increased with the increasing silica addition amount, which can be attributed to the facilitating effect of π-π electron donor acceptor (EDA) interaction and pore-filling effect. In addition, silica addition can also effectively enhance the oxidation resistance of biochar for TC adsorption, since the decreased degree (δ) of TC adsorption amounts on the biochars after chemical oxidation decreased with the increasing silica addition level. The observed positive correlations between δ values and the corresponding C loss amount of biochars after chemical oxidation suggested that the high carbon stability was favorable for the maintenance of biochar adsorption capacity. These results can provide a new way to improve biochar stabilities, aging resistance, and adsorption properties for organic pollutants.
Modification of Bio-Char Derived from Fast Pyrolysis of Biomass and Its Application in Removal of Tetracycline from Aqueous Solution.

Abstract:In this work, bio-char, a mass productive by-product of biomass fast pyrolysis, was adopted as an adsorbent to remove tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solution. To enhance the adsorption capacity, a simple modification of bio-char with acid and alkali was carried out. Bio-char samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm. The results show that the alkali treated bio-char possesses larger surface area than those of raw and acid treated bio-chars, and accordingly exhibits a more excellent adsorption performance (58.8mg/g) than the other two bio-chars and other adsorbents reported previously. The graphite-like structure of bio-char facilitates the formation of π–π interactions between ring structure in tetracycline molecule and graphite-like sheets. The surface area showed significant effects on TC adsorption as well as O-containing functional groups, whereas the initial pH of solution has small effects on TC adsorption under the experimental conditions.

Abstract:This study prepared pomelo peel biochar (PBC) under different pyrolysis temperatures ( T ) (300–800 °C) and investigated the removal efficiency of tetracycline (TC) under the oxidative systems established by PBC and oxidants (hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and peroxydisulfate (PDS)). The correlation between the properties of PBC and the removal efficiencies of TC was studied by Pearson analysis to clarify the critical properties of biochar in catalytic processes. The inorganic carbon ( IC ), ash , pH , basic functional groups ( BFG ), specific surface area ( SSA ), microporous surface area ( S micro ), pore volume ( PV ), and graphitization degree ( I D /I G ) of PBC were positively correlated with the increase of T ( p < 0.05). Notably, the SSA and PV of PBC increased from 4.294 m 2 /g and 0.002 cm 3 /g to 496.864 m 2 /g and 0.261 cm 3 /g as the pyrolysis temperature increased from 300 to 800 °C. In contrast, the yield , organic carbon ( OC ), and acidic functional groups ( AFG ) of PBC displayed negatively correlated with the increase of T ( p < 0.05). R ad , R PBC/H2O2 , R PBC/PMS , and R PBC/PDS represented the removal efficiencies of TC by PBC adsorption, PBC/H 2 O 2 , PBC/PMS, and PBC/PDS system. R PBC/H2O2 , R PBC/PMS , and R PBC/PDS showed a highly positive correlation to the R ad ( r = 0.965, 0.952, 0.946, p < 0.01). R ad , R PBC/H2O2 , R PBC/PMS , and R PBC/PDS were positively correlated with K , Mg , ash , pH , BFG, and I D /I G ( p < 0.01). There was no statistically significant correlation between persistent free radicals ( PFRs ) and the removal efficiencies of TC. Furthermore, SSA and PV showed positive relationships with the removal efficiencies of TC in the PBC/PMS and PBC/PDS systems, but no significant correlation with the removal efficiencies of TC in the PBC/H 2 O 2 systems. Moreover, the catalytic behaviors and mechanisms were studied in the PBC-800 based oxidative systems. The quenching experiments and EPR spectra indicated that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was the main active species. Except for 1 O 2 , superoxide radical (O 2 •− ) also contributed to TC removal in the oxidative systems. From the changes in used PBC-800, the disordered sp 2 hybrid carbon, sp 3 C–C, and pyridinic-N were the main active sites in activation.

Abstract:Three types of raw biochar (i.e. CBC, OBC, PBC produced from cornstalk, orange peel and peanut hull, respectively) and the modified ones (i.e., KMnO4-, KOH- and H3PO4-treatment) were employed to activate H2O2 for the removal of tetracycline (TC). The effects of pyrolysis temperatures, H2O2 concentration and initial pH were examined. TC removal by raw biochars w/o H2O2 was dependent on the feedstock and pyrolysis temperature of biochar, but the removal efficiency was still quite low under optimum conditions. The KMnO4-treatment significantly enhanced the adsorption of TC on all three biochars, but only enhanced the TC removal by CBC + H2O2. The KOH-treatment had insignificant effect on the adsorption of TC on biochar, but improved the performance of CBC/PBC + H2O2. The H3PO4-treatment had a negative impact on TC removal by biochar w/o H2O2. Overall, H2O2 could either enhance or decrease the TC removal by biochar, depending on biochar type, H2O2 concentration and solution pH.

Abstract:Biochar prepared from waste biomass has attracted increasing attention due to its excellent performance in treating wastewaters containing organic pollutants. In this study, a nitrogen-doped corn cob-based biochar loaded with mixed-valence iron nanoparticles () was synthesized via a two-step pyrolysis method, and its physicochemical characteristics, catalytic capacity and mechanism for activating PMS toward tetracycline (TC) degradation were systematically studied. The results indicated that a 91.8% removal of TC (100 mg/L) could be achieved in 10 min with a 0.2 g/L dose of The nitrogen atoms that were introduced into the biochar framework not only inhibited the agglomeration of iron nanoparticles but also produced defects that served as bridges to accelerate electron transfer, thus enhancing the catalyst's synergetic effect toward the iron nanoparticles and efficiently promoting Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycling. A non-radical degradation pathway with singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was dominant, and radical-initiated degradation with sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ), superoxide radicals (O 2 •− ) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) was involved. Four probable degradation pathways were proposed by identifying intermediates via LC−MS. Moreover, the composite exhibited high stability, good reusability, and a very low iron leaching rate.

Abstract:Iron-doping modification is a prevailing approach for improving adsorption capability of biochar with environmental friendliness, but usually requires high temperature and suffers from iron aggregation. Herein, a highly adsorptive biochar was manufactured via sequential disperse impregnation of iron by refluxing and pyrolysis at low temperature for eliminating tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solution. Iron oxides and hydroxides were impregnated and stably dispersed on the carbon matrix as pyrolyzed at 200 °C, meanwhile abundant oxygen and nitrogen functional groups were generated on surface. The iron-doped biochar exhibited up to 891.37 mg/g adsorption capacity at pH 5, and could be recycled with high adsorption capability. The adsorption of TC should be mostly contributed to the hydrogen bonding of N/O functional groups and the hydrogen bonding/coordination of iron oxides/hydroxides. This would provide a valuable guide for dispersedly doping iron and conserving functional groups on biochar, and a super iron-doped biochar was prepared with superior recyclability.

Abstract:In this work, a novel modified biochar was prepared by pretreatment of Camellia oleifera shell with sulfamic acid. The effects of sulfamic acid on the properties of feedstock and biochar, and the influence of pyrolysis temperature on the modification was investigated. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism of modified biochar for tetracycline (TC) was explore. The results showed that the specific surface area (170.97 m2/g) of the modified biochar was 2.6 times larger than that of the original biochar (65.31 m2/g). In addition, sulfamic acid treatment introduced more functional groups for biochar. These modification effects significantly improved the adsorption performance of biochar. The maximum adsorption capacity of sulfamic acid modified biochar for TC was 412.95 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism studies demonstrated that there were many interactions in the adsorption process, including electrostatic interaction, H bonding, π-π interaction, pore filling. In general, sulfamic acid was a potential green modification reagent, which could be used to improve the adsorption performance of biochar.

Abstract:Owing to its environmental-friendliness, low-cost, and outstanding characteristics, biochar has been widely used for the catalytic degradation of various organic pollutants. In this study, a pre- and post-deashing graphitized biochar (DBC800 and PBC800-A) was prepared and compared with the pristine biochar (PBC800) to activate persulfate (PS) for tetracycline (TC) degradation. The influence of the natural endogenous mineral on the catalytic ability of biochar was investigated. Characterization results show that the inherent endogenous mineral in biochar not only acted as a natural pore-forming agent to promote the formation of the porous structure, but also facilitated the formation of edge defective structures, and altered the surface functional groups, as well as increased the carbonization and graphitization degree of biochar. The PBC800-A exhibited a much higher catalytic efficiency on PS activation and TC oxidative degradation with the reaction rate of 0.06055 min−1, 7.14 times as that of DBC800 (0.00861 min−1) and 4.63 times as that of PBC800 (0.00158 min−1). The endogenous minerals were conducive to the generation of free radicals and promoted the oxidative degradation of TC, which was mainly attributed to the improved carbon configuration. The post-deashing treatment was also found to significantly improve the electron transport efficiency of biochar by removing the residual ash, thereby promoting the generation of singlet oxygen. This study demonstrated that the natural minerals in biochar was beneficial for the degradation of TC, and more alternative natural minerals can be applied to co-pyrolysis with biochar for the remediation of refractory organic pollutants.

Abstract:The disposal and treatment of antibiotic residues is a recognized challenge due to the huge production, high moisture content, high processing costs, and residual antibiotics, which caused environmental pollution. Antibiotic residues contained valuable components and could be recycled. Using a one-step controllable pyrolysis technique in a tubular furnace, biochar (OSOBs) was produced without the preliminary carbonization step, which was innovative and time- and cost-saving compared to traditional methods. The main aim of this study was to explore the adsorption and removal efficiency of tetracycline (TC) in water using porous biochar prepared from oxytetracycline fermentation residues in one step. A series of characterizations were conducted on the prepared biochar materials, and the effects of biochar dosage, initial tetracycline concentration, reaction time, and reaction temperature on the adsorption capacity were studied. The experimental results showed that at 298 K, the maximum adsorption capacity of OSOB-3-700 calculated by the Langmuir model reached 1096.871 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics fitting results indicated that the adsorption of tetracycline on biochar was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which was a chemical adsorption. The adsorption isotherm fitting results showed that the Langmuir model better described the adsorption process of tetracycline on biochar, indicating that tetracycline was adsorbed in a monolayer on specific homogeneous active sites through chemical adsorption, consistent with the kinetic conclusions. The adsorption process occurred on the surface of the biochar containing rich active sites, and the chemical actions such as electron exchange promoted the adsorption process.
Preparation of Biochar with Developed Mesoporous Structure from Poplar Leaf Activated by KHCO3 and Its Efficient Adsorption of Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride

Abstract:The effective removal of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) from the water environment is of great importance. Adsorption as a simple, stable, and cost-effective technology is regarded as an important method for removing OTC. Herein, a low-cost biochar with a developed mesoporous structure was synthesized via pyrolysis of poplar leaf with potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) as the activator. KHCO3 can endow biochar with abundant mesopores, but excessive KHCO3 cannot continuously promote the formation of mesoporous structures. In comparison with all of the prepared biochars, PKC-4 (biochar with a poplar leaf to KHCO3 mass ratio of 5:4) shows the highest adsorption performance for OTC as it has the largest surface area and richest mesoporous structure. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich equilibrium model are more consistent with the experimental data, which implies that the adsorption process is multi-mechanism and multi-layered. In addition, the maximum adsorption capacities of biochar are slightly affected by pH changes, different metal ions, and different water matrices. Moreover, the biochar can be regenerated by pyrolysis, and its adsorption capacity only decreases by approximately 6% after four cycles. The adsorption of biochar for OTC is mainly controlled by pore filling, though electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interaction are also involved. This study realizes biomass waste recycling and highlights the potential of poplar leaf-based biochar for the adsorption of antibiotics.

The Removal of Tetracycline from Aqueous Solutions Using Peanut Shell Biochars Prepared at Different Pyrolysis Temperatures

Abstract:The pyrolysis temperature strongly affects the properties of the peanut shell biochar, and influences its adsorption behavior and mechanisms for contaminant removal in aqueous solutions. In this study, peanut shells were pyrolyzed at 400 °C and 700 °C to prepare two biochars (PSBC400 and PSBC700), which were then characterized using scanning electron microscopy/X-ray energy spectrum analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, elemental analysis, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The adsorption behavior of typical tetracycline (TC) onto the biochars was investigated, and the potential adsorption mechanisms explored. The results show that compared with PSBC400, PSBC700 has a larger specific surface area and pore volume and contains higher levels of carbon and ash, but shows lower O, N, and H content. The hydrophilicity and polarity of PSBC700 is lower, but its aromaticity is higher. Furthermore, the mineral content of PSBC400 is higher than for PSBC700. The functional groups differ between PSBC400 and PSBC700, especially those containing C and O. The Elovich and two-compartment adsorption kinetic models are a good fit to the TC adsorption processes on both biochars, but the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model provides better results. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of TC onto PSBC700 and PSBC400 are 33.4346 mg·g−1 and 26.4185 mg·g−1, respectively. The main adsorption mechanisms of TC onto PSBC400 are hydrogen bonding and complexation, and are closely related to the functional groups and minerals found in PSBC400. In contrast, the main adsorption mechanisms of TC onto PSBC700 are pore filling and the π–π interaction, and are mainly determined by the surface area and graphited carbon structure of PSBC700. In summary, effective biochar can be manufactured from peanut shell biomass and can be used to remove TC from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:The bamboo biochars pyrolyzed at 400 °C and 600 °C (BC400 and BC600) were modified by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to obtain the oxidized biochars. Biochar stability and the effect of oxidation treatment on the adsorption and co-adsorption of tetracycline (TC) and Cu2+ onto biochars were investigated. The calculated carbon loss of biochars after oxidation treatment indicated that BC600 presented higher carbon stability than BC400 due to the condensed aromatic structure of biochar. Moreover, oxidation treatment introduced O-containing functional groups on biochar surface, but destructed the aromatic structures of oxidized biochars, which in turn affected the adsorption capacity of biochars for TC and Cu2+. Oxidation treatment obviously enhanced the adsorption of TC and Cu2+ onto BC400 owing to the increase of O-containing functional groups, but significantly decreased TC and Cu2+ adsorption onto BC600 because of the decreased π-π dispersive forces between biochar and adsorbate. The promotion effect of Cu2+ on TC adsorption onto BC400 changed into inhibition effect after chemical oxidation owing to the pore blockage. However, the promotion degree of Cu2+ for TC adsorption onto BC600 was enhanced through oxidation treatment due to electrostatic attraction and complexation. Meanwhile, oxidation treatment reduced the inhibition degrees of TC for Cu2+ adsorption onto biochars, which was attributed to the increased amount of electron-rich groups. The results are helpful for the application of biochars in the soils remediation.
Synergistic Adsorption and Oxidation of Ciprofloxacin by Biochar Derived from Metal-Enriched Phytoremediation Plants: Experimental and Computational Insights

Abstract:Biochar is a promising candidate for the adsorptive removal of organic/inorganic pollutants, yet its role in metal-free catalyzed advanced oxidation processes still remains ambiguous. In this work, five biochar samples (PPBKx, where x represents the pyrolysis temperature) were prepared by using metal-enriched phytoremediation plant residue as the feedstock. Notably, PPBK exhibited a high specific surface area (as high as 1090.7 m2 g–1) and outstanding adsorption capacity toward ciprofloxacin (CIP, as much as 1.51 ± 0.19 mmol g–1). By introducing peroxymonosulfate (PMS, 5 mM) as the chemical oxidant, over 2 mmol g–1 CIP was synergistically adsorbed and oxidized within 30 min although PMS itself could not oxidize CIP efficiently, suggesting the formation of reactive oxidative species. Theoretical calculations revealed that PMS anions preferentially adsorbed on the activated C atoms adjacent to the graphitic N dopant, where the carbon matrix served as the electron donor, instead of as an electron mediator. The adsorbed PMS possessed a smaller molecular orbital energy gap, indicating that it was much easier to be activated than free PMS anions. Surface-bound reactive species were elucidated to be the dominant contributor through chemical quenching experiments and electrochemical characterizations. The catalytic activity of PPBK700 could be greatly retained in repeated oxidations because of the stable N species, which serve as the active catalytic sites, while the CIP adsorption was greatly deteriorated because of the diminishing active adsorption sites (carbon matrix edge) caused by the partial oxidation of PMS. Abstract:The excessive accumulation of tetracycline (TC) presents significant challenges to both human health and the ecological environment. This study explores the impact of Fe-loaded sawdust graphitic carbon (engineered biochar) on TC degradation in water, utilizing an advanced oxidation process facilitated by H 2 O 2 activation. The investigation encompasses an examination of the structural characteristics of Fe-loaded sawdust graphitic carbon and an in-depth analysis of its catalytic degradation mechanism concerning TC. Density functional theory (DFT) was utilized to construct an adsorptive degradation system for TC in water, thereby scrutinizing the optimal treatment process for TC. The findings highlight that Fe-loaded biochar exhibits not only a substantial pore structure but also inherent defects and a graphitic structure. The porous configuration enhances the TC adsorption capacity of the biochar system, while the graphitic structure bolsters the stability of the carbon framework, ensuring efficient charge transfer via the carbon defects. The activation effect of Fe(III) on H 2 O 2 into ·O 2 - is dependent on its specific location within the carbon structure. In the presence of 5 mmol H 2 O 2 , Fe-loaded biochar achieves a nearly 100 % degradation rate of TC, with its degradation proficiency minimally influenced by varying pH conditions.

Abstract:Comparison of different mineral element modifications on biochars has been rarely investigated, and their adsorption behavior toward pollutants is also less compared. In this study, typical mineral elements referring to Ca, Mg, and Al were employed to modify pristine biochars (PSBC). The effect of minerals modification on the properties of biochars was investigated, and their adsorption performance toward tetracycline (TC) was compared. The results showed that minerals modification markedly raised the surface area of biochars, formed a hierarchical porous structure, and introduced more functional groups. The maximum adsorption capacity exhibited the following order: Ca-PSBC > Al-PSBC > Mg-PSBC > PSBC. The highest adsorption capacity of Ca-PSBC toward TC was 79.65 mg·g −1 , which was ascribed to the interaction of pore filling, π-π interaction, surface complexation, hydrogen bond, and electrostatic interactions. The two-compartment model and Elovich's kinetic model better describe the adsorption process. The Langmuir and Temkin models better fitted the TC adsorption process on PSBC and Ca-PSBC, whereas the Freundlich model better reflected the TC adsorption process on Mg-PSBC and Al-PSBC. Minerals modification strengthened the interaction of pore filling, surface complexation, and hydrogen bonding. Therefore, minerals modification was considered a promising strategy to improve the adsorption performance of biochar toward TC, especially Ca modification, owing to its strengthening the interaction of pore filling and surface complexation and exhibiting practical application potential.

Abstract:Biochar is widely used to remove organic pollutants from the environment. Several studies have focused on pollutant removal via biochar adsorption. However, research on the subsequent processing of pollutant-adsorbed biochar is lacking. This study explored the potential of biochar for the adsorption of an aquatic organic pollutant (tetracycline) and its subsequent use as a solid biofuel. These results suggest that corn straw-derived biochar (torrefaction and pyrolysis) is suitable for two-stage utilization to achieve bioresource valorization for environmental sustainability. Tetracycline-adsorbed biochar, particularly biochar pyrolyzed at 600 °C, is suitable for use as a biofuel. The biochar produced via torrefaction (300 °C) and pyrolysis (600 °C) is the optimal choice, with surface area, contact angle, graphitization degree, calorific value, enhancement factor, and upgrading energy index values of 172.48 m2/g, 120.4°, 3.87, 26.983 MJ/kg, 1.58, and 33.72, respectively. This is supported by the results of expense calculation, comprehensive performance analysis, and life-cycle assessment. Overall, the biochar produced in this study is suitable for organic pollutant removal and as solid biofuel; thus, it can be used to realize waste utilization for environmental sustainability.

Abstract:Biochar is an environmentally friendly material with potential applications in water purification. In this study, herb residue nitrogen-doped biochar (N-BC) was fabricated and used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Characterization and density-functional theory (DFT) studies were conducted to explore the influence of nitrogen doping. Radical scavenging activity and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy revealed that non-radical singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) is the main reactive oxidative species. Additionally, pyridinic-N was shown to play a pivotal role in the 1 O 2 -dominated pathway. Three possible degradation pathways were proposed based on the identified degradation intermediates. Batch experiments confirmed that N-BC showed excellent catalytic performance and reusability. The best condition for tetracycline (TC) degradation efficiency (>99%) in 60 min was obtained when the dosage of N-BC was 1 g/L and the concentration of PMS was 5 mM. Furthermore, N-BC showed approximately 65.5% degradation efficiency within 4 cycles. Furthermore, the toxicity of degradation intermediates was examined using ECOSAR and T.E.S.T procedures. This study brings forth a feasible strategy to synthesize biochar. Furthermore, the proposed approach will facilitate the use of biochar in water purification.

Abstract:In this work, tea waste biochar was prepared and used to activate peroxodisulfate (PDS) for the removal of tetracycline (TC) efficiently. And SEM, XRD, Raman, and FTIR were used to characterize the biochar. The effects of reaction conditions including initial pH, biochar dosage, and PDS concentration on the removal of TC were explored, and the result showed that compared with the biochar prepared at 400 °C and 500 °C, the biochar pyrolyzed at 600 °C (TBC600) had the highest TC removal performance due to its higher sp2 hybrid carbon content, richer defective structure, and stronger electron deliverability. Under the optimal dosage of PDS (4 mM) and TBC600 (0.8 g L−1), the removal efficiency of TC (10 mg L−1) reached 81.65%. After four cycles of TBC600, the removal rate could still reach 75.51%, indicating that TBC600 has excellent stability. In addition, quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) verified that the active oxygen including SO4·−, ·OH, O2·−, and singlet oxygen (1O2) was involved, among which 1O2 and OH were the main active substance in the TC removal. Therefore, this work provided a green and efficient persulfate activator and a method for recycling tea waste.

Abstract:Iron-doped biochar has been widely used as an adsorbent to remove contaminants due to the high adsorption performance, but it still suffers from complicated preparation methods, unstable iron loading, unsatisfactory specific surface area, and uneven distribution of active sites. Here, a novel magnetic porous biochar (FeCS800) with nanostructure on surface was synthesized by one-pot pyrolysis method of corn straw with K2FeO4, and used in orange G (OG) and tetracycline (TC) adsorption. FeCS800 exhibited outstanding adsorption capacities for OG and TC after K2FeO4 activation and the adsorption data were fitted satisfactorily to Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacities of FeCS800 for OG and TC were around 303.03 mg/g and 322.58 mg/g, respectively, at 25 °C and pH 7.0, which were 16.27 and 24.61 times higher than that before modification. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption of OG/TC by FeCS800 were thermodynamically favorable and highly spontaneous. And the adsorption capacity of OG and TC by FeCS800 remained 77% and 81% after 5 cycles, respectively, indicating that FeCS800 had good stability. The outstanding adsorption properties and remarkable reusability of FeCS800 show its great potential to be an economic and environmental adsorbent in contaminants removal.

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC) and sugarcane bagasse had both exerted enormous strain on environmental security. In this work, new composite adsorbent designed by impregnating bio-waste bagasse with magnesium-aluminum layered double oxides (BC-MA) was innovatively brought forward for TC removal. Benefiting from the abundant adsorption sites supplied by developed pores structure (0.308 cm 3 ·g -1 ), enlarged surface area (256.8 m 2 ·g -1 ) and reinforced functional groups, the maximum adsorption amount of BC-MA for TC reached 250.6 mg g -1 . Moreover, BC-MA displayed desirable adsorption capacity in diverse water environments coupled with excellent sustainable regeneration ability. The absorption process of TC by BC-MA was spontaneous and endothermic, and the pivotal rate-limiting stage pertained to intraparticle diffusion. The mechanisms proposed here mainly concerned π-π interactions, pore filling, complexation and hydrogen bonding. These findings suggested that the synthesis of modified biochar from bagasse would offer new opportunities for simultaneous waste resource reuse and water pollution control.
