Abstract:Let $\{X_{v}:v\in\mathbb{Z}^d\}$ be i.i.d. random variables. Let $S(\pi)=\sum_{v\in\pi}X_v$ be the weight of a self-avoiding lattice path $\pi$. Let \[M_n=\max\{S(\pi):\pi\text{ has length }n\text{ and starts from the origin}\}.\] We are interested in the asymptotics of $M_n$ as $n\to\infty$. This model is closely related to the first passage percolation when the weights $\{X_v:v\in\mathbb{Z}^d\}$ are non-positive and it is closely related to the last passage percolation when the weights $\{X_v,v\in\mathbb{Z}^d\}$ are non-negative. For general weights, this model could be viewed as an interpolation between first passage models and last passage models. Besides, this model is also closely related to a variant of the position of right-most particles of branching random walks. Under the two assumptions that $\exists\alpha>0$, $E(X_0^{+})^d(\log^{+}X_0^{+})^{d+\alpha}<+\infty$ and that $E[X_0^{-}]<+\infty$, we prove that there exists a finite real number $M$ such that $M_n/n$ converges to a deterministic constant $M$ in $L^{1}$ as $n$ tends to infinity. And under the stronger assumptions that $\exists\alpha>0$, $E(X_0^{+})^d(\log^{+}X_0^{+})^{d+\alpha}<+\infty$ and that $E[(X_0^{-})^4]<+\infty$, we prove that $M_n/n$ converges to the same constant $M$ almost surely as $n$ tends to infinity.

Abstract:We consider the infinite directed graph with vertices the set of integers ...,-2,-1,0,1,2,... . Let v be a random variable taking either finite values or value "minus infinity". Consider random weights v(j,k), indexed by pairs (j,k) of integers with j<k, and assume that they are i.i.d. copies of v. The set of edges of the graph is the set (j,k), j<k. A path in the graph from vertex j to vertex k, j<k, is a finite sequence of edges (j(0), j(1)), (j(1), j(2)), ..., (j(m-1), j(m)) with j(0)=j and j(m)=j; the weight of this path is taken to be the sum v(j(0),j(1))+v(j(1),j(2))+...+v(j(m-1),j(m)) of the weights of its edges. Let w(0,n) be the maximal weight of all paths from 0 to n. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the sequence w(0,n), n=1, 2, ..., as n tends to infinity, under the assumptions that P(v>0)>0, the conditional distribution of v, given v>0, is not degenerate, and that E exp(Cv) is finite, for some C>0. We derive local limit theorems in the normal and moderate large deviations regimes in the case where v has an arithmetic distribution. Hankel Determinants for a Class of Weighted Lattice Paths

Abstract:In this paper, our primary goal is to calculate the Hankel determinants for a class of lattice paths, which are distinguished by the step set consisting of $\{(1,0), (2,0), (k-1,1), (-1,1)\}$, where the parameter $k\geq 4$. These paths are constrained to return to the $x$-axis and remain above the $x$-axis. When calculating for $k = 4$, the problem essentially reduces to determining the Hankel determinant of $E(x)$, where $E(x)$ is defined as \[ E(x) = \frac{a}{E(x)x^2(dx^2 - bx - 1) + cx^2 + bx + 1}. \] Our approach involves employing the Sulanke-Xin continued fraction transform to derive a set of recurrence relations, which in turn yield the desired results. For $k \geq 5$, we utilize a class of shifted periodic continued fractions as defined by Wang-Xin-Zhai, thereby obtaining the results presented in this paper.

On Covering Monotonic Paths with Simple Random Walk

Abstract:In this paper we study the probability that a $d$ dimensional simple random walk (or the first $L$ steps of it) covers each point in a nearest neighbor path connecting 0 and the boundary of an $L_1$ ball. We show that among all such paths, the one that maximizes the covering probability is the monotonic increasing one that stays within distance 1 from the diagonal. As a result, we can obtain an exponential upper bound on the decaying rate of covering probability of any such path when $d\ge 4$.

Abstract:In this paper we find an upper bound for the probability that a 3 dimensional simple random walk covers each point in a nearest neighbor path connecting 0 and the boundary of an L-1 ball of radius N in Z(d). For d >= 4, it has been shown in [5] that such probability decays exponentially with respect to N. For d = 3, however, the same technique does not apply, and in this paper we obtain a slightly weaker upper bound: for all epsilon > 0, there exists c(epsilon) > 0, P (Trace(P) subset of Trace({X-n}(n=0)(infinity))) <= exp (-c(epsilon) N log(-(1+epsilon))(N)).

Abstract:We consider the proportion of generalized visible lattice points in the plane visited by random walkers. Our work concerns the visible lattice points in random walks in three aspects: (1) generalized visibility along curves; (2) one random walker visible from multiple watchpoints; (3) simultaneous visibility of multiple random walkers. Moreover, we found new phenomenon in the case of multiple random walkers: for visibility along a large class of curves and for any number of random walkers, the proportion of steps at which all random walkers are visible simultaneously is almost surely larger than a positive constant.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the study of lattice paths that consist of vertical steps $(0,-1)$ and non-vertical steps $(1,k)$ for some $k\in \mathbb Z$. Two special families of primary and free lattice paths with vertical steps are considered. It is shown that for any family of primary paths there are equinumerous families of proper weighted lattice paths that consist of only non-vertical steps. The relation between primary and free paths is established and some combinatorial and statistical properties are obtained. It is shown that the expected number of vertical steps in a primary path running from $(0,0)$ to $(n,-1)$ is equal to the number of free paths running from $(0,0)$ to $(n,0)$. Enumerative results with generating functions are given. Finally, a few examples of families of paths with vertical steps are presented and related to {\L}ukasiewicz, Motzkin, Dyck and Delannoy paths.
Lattice paths and the diagonal of the cube

Abstract:We study lattice paths in the cube, starting at $(n,n,n)$ and ending at $(0,0,0)$, with unit steps $(-1,0,0)$, $(0,-1,0)$, $(0,0,-1)$. Our main interest is the number of times the diagonal $x=y=z$ is visited during the random walk. We derive the corresponding generating function of such lattice paths. We also turn to the cuboid, enumerating lattice paths starting at $(n_1,n_2,n_3)$ and ending at $(0,0,0)$ according to the visits to the cube's diagonal. Furthermore, we provide for the cube a refined enumeration according to visits after a detour of a certain length. These enumerations allow us to obtain distributional results for the corresponding random variables. Extensions to hypercube are discussed, as well as a summary of known results for the square. We also show how to recover (and extend) a very recent result of Li and Starr on Dyck bridges using generating functions and composition schemes.

A unified scaling for the optimal path length in disordered lattices

Abstract:In recent decades, much attention has been focused on the topic of optimal paths in weighted networks due to its broad scientific interest and technological applications. In this work we revisit the problem of the optimal path between two points and focus on the role of the geometry (size and shape) of the embedding lattice, which has received very little attention. This role becomes crucial, for example, in the strong disorder limit, where the mean length of the optimal path for a fixed end-to-end distance diverges as the lattice size increases. We propose a unified scaling ansatz for the mean length of the optimal path in $D-$dimensional disordered lattices. The ansatz is supported by a comprehensive numerical study of the problem on $2D$ lattices, yet we also present results in $D=3$. We show that it unifies well-known results in the strong and weak disorder regimes, including the crossover behavior, but it also reveals novel scaling scenarios not yet addressed. Moreover, it provides relevant insights into the origin of the universal exponents that characterize the scaling of the optimal path in the strong disorder limit.

Heaps of pieces for lattice paths

Abstract:We study heaps of pieces for lattice paths, which give a combinatorial visualization of lattice paths. We introduce two types of heaps: type $I$ and type $II$. A heap of type $I$ is characterized by peaks of a lattice path. We have a duality between a lattice path $\mu$ and its dual $\overline{\mu}$ on heaps of type $I$. A heap of type $II$ for $\mu$ is characterized by the skew shape between the lowest path and $\mu$. We give a determinant expression for the generating function of heaps for general lattice paths, and an explicit formula for rational $(1,k)$-Dyck paths by using the inversion lemma. We introduce and study heaps in $k+1$-dimensions which are bijective to heaps of type $II$ for $(1,k)$-Dyck paths. Further, we show a bijective correspondence between type $I$ and type $II$ in the case of rational $(1,k)$-Dyck paths. As another application of heaps, we give two explicit formulae for the generating function of heaps for symmetric Dyck paths in terms of statistics on Dyck paths and on symmetric Dyck paths respectively.

Quenched invariance principle for a long-range random walk with unbounded conductances

Abstract:We consider a random walk on a random graph (V, E), where V is the set of open sites under i.i.d. Bernoulli site percolation on the d-dimensional integer set Z(d) with d>2, and the transition probabilities of the walk are generated by i.i.d. random conductances (positive numbers) assigned to the edges in E. This random walk in random environments has long range jumps and is reversible. We prove the quenched invariance principle for this walk when the random conductances are unbounded from above but uniformly bounded from zero by taking the corrector approach. To this end, we prove a metric comparison between the graph metric and the Euclidean metric on the graph (V, E), an estimation of a first-passage percolation and an almost surely weighted Poincare inequality on (V, E), which are used to prove the quenched heat kernel estimations for the random walk.

Abstract:In this paper, we study (1,2) and (2,1) random walks in varying environments on the lattice of positive half line. We assume that the transition probabilities at site $n$ are asymptotically constants as $n\rightarrow\infty.$ For (1,2) random walk, we get some elaborate asymptotic behaviours of various escape probabilities and hitting probabilities of the walk. Such observations and some delicate analysis of continued fractions and the product of nonnegative matrices enable us to give criteria for finiteness of the number of cutpoints of both (1,2) and (2,1) random walks, which generalize E. Csáki, A. Földes and P. Révész [J. Theor. Probab. 23: 624-638 (2010)] and H.-M. Wang [Markov Processes Relat. Fields 25: 125-148 (2019)]. For near-recurrent random walks, whenever there are infinitely many cutpoints, we also study the asymptotics of the number of cutpoints in $[0,n].$

Abstract:We study first-passage percolation through related optimization problems over paths of restricted length. The path length variable is in duality with a shift of the weights. This puts into a convex duality framework old observations about the convergence of the normalized Euclidean length of geodesics due to Hammersley and Welsh, Smythe and Wierman, and Kesten, and leads to new results about geodesic length and the regularity of the shape function as a function of the weight shift. For points far enough away from the origin, the ratio of the geodesic length and the $\ell^1$ distance to the endpoint is uniformly bounded away from one. The shape function is a strictly concave function of the weight shift. Atoms of the weight distribution generate singularities, that is, points of nondifferentiability, in this function. We generalize to all distributions, directions and dimensions an old singularity result of Steele and Zhang for the planar Bernoulli case. When the weight distribution has two or more atoms, a dense set of shifts produce singularities. The results come from a combination of the convex duality, the shape theorems of the different first-passage optimization problems, and modification arguments.

Abstract:For a symmetric, homogeneous and irreducible random walk on d-dimensional integer lattice Z^d, having zero mean and a finite variance of jumps, we study the passage times (with possible infinite values) determined by the starting point x, the hitting state y and the taboo state z. We find the probability that these passages times are finite and analyze the tails of their cumulative distribution functions. In particular, it turns out that for the random walk on Z^d, except for a simple (nearest neighbor) random walk on Z, the order of the tail decrease is specified by dimension d only. In contrast, for a simple random walk on Z, the asymptotic properties of hitting times with taboo essentially depend on the mutual location of the points x, y and z. These problems originated in our recent study of branching random walk on Z^d with a single source of branching.

Abstract:Consider a family of random masses $\mathbf{m}(v)$ indexed by vertices of the lattice $\mathbb Z^d$. In the case where the masses are i.i.d.\ and satisfy a certain moment condition, it is known that there exists a deterministic $A\ge 0$ such that the maximal mass $A_n$ of an animal containing $0$ with cardinal $n$ satisfies $A_n/n \rightarrow A$ when $n\to \infty$, almost surely. The same also goes for self-avoiding paths. We extend this result to the case where the family of masses is an ergodic marked point process, with a suitable definition for animals in this context. Special cases include the initial model with ergodic instead of i.i.d.\ masses and marked Poisson point processes. We also discuss some sufficient or necessary conditions for integrability.
