Abstract:Classroom response systems are an important tool in many active learning pedagogies. They support real-time feedback on student learning and promote student engagement, even in large classrooms, by allowing instructors to solicit an answer to a question from all students and show the results. Existing classroom response systems are general purpose and not tailored to the specific needs of a chemistry classroom. In particular, it is not easy to deploy molecular representations except as static images. Here we present the 3Dmol.js learning environment, a classroom response system that uses the open-source web-based 3Dmol.js JavaScript framework to provide interactive viewing and querying of 3D molecules. 3Dmol.js is available under a BSD 3-clause open-source license, and the learning-environment features are all available through <a class="extLink" href="http://3dmol.csb.pitt.edu/">http://3dmol.csb.pitt.edu/</a> without any software installation required. This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is the deficiencies of existing classroom response systems in chemistry teaching, especially the inability to seamlessly integrate the visualization and interaction functions of 3D chemical structures. Specifically: 1. **Existing classroom response systems are highly versatile but lack specificity**: Most classroom response systems are general - purpose and are not optimized for the specific needs of chemistry classrooms. In particular, when dealing with molecular structures, they can usually only use static images, which limits students' interaction and spatial learning abilities. 2. **Lack of support for 3D molecular structures**: In chemistry teaching, the visualization of 3D molecular structures is crucial for understanding concepts such as stereochemistry and reaction pathways. However, existing classroom response systems fail to provide effective tools to display and manipulate these 3D structures. To solve these problems, the author has developed a classroom response system (Learning Environment) based on 3Dmol.js, which utilizes the open - source WebGL technology to achieve real - time interaction and query functions for 3D molecular structures. Through this platform, teachers can more effectively guide students to engage in interactive learning, helping them better understand and master complex chemical concepts. ### Main improvement points include: - **Real - time interaction**: Students can answer questions by clicking on different parts of the 3D molecule, enhancing their sense of participation. - **Seamless integration**: The system can run directly in the browser without the need to install additional software, which is convenient and fast. - **Support for multiple file formats**: It can load and display multiple common molecular file formats to meet different teaching needs. - **Enhanced spatial learning**: Through intuitive 3D visualization, it helps students better understand the spatial structure of molecules and stereochemistry. In conclusion, this paper aims to improve teaching effectiveness and students' learning experience by introducing a classroom response system specifically designed for chemistry classrooms and equipped with powerful 3D molecular visualization functions.
