Abstract:The psychological impact of medical care accessibility during the pandemic has been widely studied, but little attention has been given to Asian immigrants in Canada. This study aimed to fill this literature gap by using a cross-sectional survey, which aimed to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Chinese immigrants in North America during the second wave of the pandemic. The study focused on Chinese immigrants aged 16 or older in Canada. Covariates included sociodemographic variables, delayed access to medical care (i.e., treatment or health assessment), and other COVID-19 related variables. We used logistic LASSO regression for model selection and multivariate logistic regression models to evaluate the association between delayed access to treatment/health assessment and psychological distress outcome, as measured by the COVID-19 Peritraumatic Distress Index (CPDI). Missing data were handled using multiple imputation. Our study included 746 respondents, with 47.18% in the normal CPDI group and 36.82% in the mild-to-severe CPDI group. Most respondents were originally from Mainland China and residing in Ontario. Over half have stayed in Canada for at least 15 years. The multivariate logistic regression models identified significant risk predictors of psychological distress status: delayed access to medical care (OR = 1.362, 95% CI: 1.078–1.720, p = 0.0095), fear of COVID-19 (OR = 1.604, 95% CI: 1.293–1.989, p < 0.0001), and social loneliness (OR = 1.408, 95%CI: 1.314–1.508, p < 0.0001). Sociodemographic variables and other COVID-19-related variates did not significantly impact the study's outcome. Our findings shed light on the importance of timely medical care access to psychological well-being among Chinese Canadians. Reliable health information, mental health support, and virtual care tailored to immigrants should be considered to mitigate this impact and promote their overall health and well-being.

Differential COVID-19 preventive behaviors among Asian subgroups in the United States

Abstract:Background: Given the observed within-Asian disparity in COVID-19 incidence, we aimed to explore the differential preventive behaviors among Asian subgroups in the United States. Methods: Based on data from the Asian subsample (N = 982) of the 2020 Health, Ethnicity, and Pandemic survey, we estimated the weighted proportion of noncompliance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines on preventive behaviors and COVID-19 testing by Asian subgroups (Asian Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Other Asian). We examined these subgroup differences after adjusting for demographic factors and state-level clustering. Results: Filipinos demonstrated the lowest rate of noncompliance for mask-wearing, social distancing, and handwashing. As compared with the Filipinos, our logistic models showed that the Chinese and the 'other Asians' subgroup had significantly higher risk of noncompliance with mask-wearing, while the Japanese, the Vietnamese, and other Asians were significantly more likely to report noncompliance with social distancing. Conclusions: The significant variation of preventive behavior across Asian subgroups signals the necessity of data disaggregation when it comes to understanding the health behavior of Asian Americans, which is critical for future pandemic preparedness. The excess behavioral risk among certain Asian subgroups (especially those 'other Asians') warrants further investigation and interventions about the driving forces behind these disparities.
Asian American Women's Experiences of Discrimination and Health Behaviors during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated racism experienced by Asian Americans, especially women and older individuals. Little is known about how discriminatory experiences during the pandemic have influenced health behaviors among Asian Americans. Between 10/2021 and 6/2022, we surveyed 193 Asian American women in the San Francisco area. Participants were asked to report types of discrimination they experienced since March 2020. We explored bivariable associations of discrimination and changes in health behaviors and healthcare utilization. Most women were Chinese American (75%) and over 45-years-old (87%). The top three discriminatory experiences reported were being treated with less respect (60%), being treated unfairly at restaurants/stores (49%), and people acting as if they are better (47%). Chinese American women (vs. non-Chinese Asian American women) reported higher frequencies of being threatened/harassed (40% vs. 22%). Women who reported any discriminatory experience (vs. none) were more likely to report less physical exercise (42.7% vs. 26.3%) and canceling/rescheduling medical appointments (65.0% vs. 45.1%). Our findings begin to elucidate Asian American women's experiences of discrimination since the pandemic and provide evidence of the harmful impacts of anti-Asian racism on health behaviors.

Abstract:On January 30, 2020, the WHO declared a public health emergency of international concern for COVID19, an epidemic novel strain of coronavirus that first infected humans in Wuhan, China. Over the following days and weeks, governments in China and across Asia started to implement drastic public health control measures, and Western countries began reporting patients as well. Measures have included quarantine, travel restrictions, social distancing (such as closing schools and banning mass gatherings), and personal hygiene measures, including wearing masks, implementing hospital infection control, and use of the International Health Regulations. To our knowledge, the impact of the epidemic on the running of clinical trials has not been reported to date. We describe the consequences of the COVID-19 epidemic, based on our experience with the ASCOLT trial (ClinicalTrials. gov identifier: NCT00565708), an academic phase III study open in 41 sites across 9 Asian countries and regions (mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Taiwan).
Changing Trends of Mental and Behavioral Responses and Associations During the COVID-19 Epidemic in China: a Panel Study

Abstract:This prospective observational study examined changing trends in mental and behavioral responses, and their association with perceived risk, severity, self-efficacy and isolation status during the Chinese COVID-19 epidemic. There were five waves of interviews. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric test methods were used for data analysis. Participants numbered 150 for the linkable baseline survey and 102 completed all 5 survey waves and were included in the analysis. Mental stress, emotional status and lifestyle manifested a statistically significant downwards trend across the total period of this panel study. The number of reported new confirmed patients perceived high risk and perceived severity were positively associated with mental stress, emotional status and lifestyle. Self-efficacy was negatively associated with each type of mental and behavioral response. The more time people were confined to their home, the more serious the emotional and lifestyle problems. Dose-response relationships were noted between the number of reported new confirmed patients and mental stress, emotional status and lifestyle during the five observation points. This study yielded new information about mental and behavioral responses among Chinese people during the COVID-19 epidemic. Policy changes and health education are essential for minimizing the adverse health effects of these responses.

Abstract:To control the spread of COVID-19, governments in different countries and regions implemented various types of lockdown and outdoor restrictions. The research aimed to describe and compare the health status of Chinese people both domestically and abroad in this global health crisis. An online questionnaire survey was distributed to Chinese mainland citizens living in Hubei (the lockdown province), outside Hubei, and those living abroad in 2020. A total of 1000 respondents were recruited and reported worse health status compared with Chinese population norms. People living in Hubei reported worse health status than those living outside Hubei but revealed better health status than overseas respondents. It was clear that the pandemic as well as strict lockdown and outdoor restriction policies affected Chinese people’s health. It is important for the Chinese government to be aware of the negative impact of such strict policies and to take measures to reduce the panic of society when implementing similar policies in the future. It also implies that governments in other countries should promote social support for those who live far from home and actively call for support for non-discriminatory attitudes toward ethnic minorities.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Heightened levels of distress among Asian Americans during the initial phases of the pandemic may be associated with current smoking behavior. In this study, we examine differences in current smoking among Asian Americans from two different ethnic backgrounds before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional survey data (n=202) from Chinese and South Asian adults in Chicago, collected between February and May 2020. We conducted logistic regression models to estimate the relationship between exposure to the COVID-19 pandemic and current smoking. We tested whether the association varied by Asian American ethnic group, unemployment, racial discrimination, and depression symptoms.RESULTS: We found that current smoking increased from 28% to 48% among Asian Americans (i.e. Chinese and South Asians) during the pandemic. We found a statistically significant interaction between the COVID-19 period indicator variable and current smoking by Asian American ethnic groups (p=0.014), such that current smoking was lower for Chinese compared to South Asians before COVID-19, but was comparable for both groups during the pandemic. We also found a statistically significant interaction between the period indicator variable and current smoking by racial discrimination (p=0.047) and depression symptoms (p=0.02). Results from these interactions suggest that Asian Americans who experienced racial discrimination and depression during the pandemic may be more likely to be current smokers compared to their pre-pandemic counterparts.CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the study highlight the need for culturally tailored smoking cessation interventions for Asian American communities that address pandemic-related stressors such as discrimination that may trigger cigarette use.

Abstract:Background: Our research team was in the process of recruiting American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) women for a community-based intervention to prevent alcohol-exposed pregnancy when the COVID-19 pandemic began. Safety measures adopted at the tribal, state, and national level required us to rethink and revise study protocols. We followed the principles of community-based participatory research, especially community engagement. The goal of this article is to report the recommendations from local AIAN field staff and the community advisory board that enabled us to exceed our prepandemic recruitment goal. Methods: First, we developed a list of major adaptations and mapped each one onto our recruitment timeline to assess its effect on subsequent enrollment. Second, we surveyed the two AIAN field staff who led recruitment and an administrative staffer at the study site and conducted a qualitative analysis of their responses. Results: Our revised project timeline presents the major adaptations that led to our successful recruitment, as verified by qualitative data from field staff. These adaptations included expanding our social media presence, expanding recruitment to a nearby urban site, implementing a "refer a friend" program, and recruiting through local media outlets. Most important was having local AIAN staff who cultivated a nonjudgmental space for potential participants to talk about sensitive topics. Discussion: We not only met our prepandemic recruitment goal but exceeded it by 16.6%. The input of our community advisory board and the efforts of community-based staff were essential in achieving success during the unprecedented conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Experiences and Lessons Learned in Using Community-Based Participatory Research to Recruit Asian American Immigrant Research Participants

Abstract:Purpose: By 2050, the number of international migrants is expected to double from 214 million people. Of these, Asian immigrants are projected to comprise the largest foreign-born population in the United States by the year 2065. Asian American immigrants experience numerous health disparities, but remain under-represented in health research. The purpose of this article is to examine the experiences and lessons learned in applying community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles to access and recruit a sample of Asian American research participants. Approach: This article reviews unique barriers to research participation among Asian Americans, describes the principles of CBPR, and provides examples of how these principles were employed to bridge recruitment challenges within a qualitative study. Findings and conclusions: CBPR facilitated greater research participation among a group of immigrant Asian Americans. Researchers must be additionally mindful of the importance of building trusting relationships with their community partners, understanding the significance of shared experiences, considering fears around immigration status, and considering ongoing challenges in identifying and reaching hidden populations. Clinical relevance: Clinicians and researchers can employ CBPR principles to guide their work with Asian immigrant communities and other under-represented groups to facilitate access to the population, improve participant recruitment, and foster engagement and collaboration.
Cardiovascular Risks and Outcomes Among Chinese American Immigrants: Insights From the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis

Abstract:Background: Immigrants experience changes in cardiovascular risk factors and racial disparities in both cardiovascular health prevention and outcomes upon immigration. We aimed to examine cardiovascular risk factors and outcomes among Chinese American immigrants enrolled in the MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis) cohort. Methods and results: We analyzed data from 746 Chinese American immigrants in the MESA study with a median follow-up period of 17.8 years. The mean age of the cohort was 62.3 years, with 52.7% being women. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the association of immigration history, geographic location, biomarkers, and cardiac imaging parameters with cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular outcomes. The Cox hazards models were adjusted for known family history of heart disease, education level, sex, diabetes, hypertension, age, and body mass index. Although immigration history categorized as earlier (<20 years) versus later (≥20 years) showed no association with cardiovascular outcomes, the duration of residence in the United States emerged as a strong predictor for an increased risk of cardiovascular disease death (hazard ratio 1.39 [95% CI, 1.07-1.8]; P=0.012). All-cause mortality differed significantly between the Chinese immigrants from Los Angeles and those from Chicago, with higher survival probability in Chicago (log-rank test, P=0.018). Furthermore, elevated levels of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide levels, left ventricular mass, and coronary artery calcium scores were associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease among Chinese immigrants. Conclusions: Within the MESA cohort, the duration of residence and geographic location were associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease outcomes among Chinese immigrants.

Abstract:Abstract Background Research indicates the adverse impacts of perceived discrimination on health, and discrimination inflamed by the COVID-19 pandemic, a type of social exclusion, could affect the well-being of the Chinese diaspora. We analyzed the relationship and pathways of perceived discrimination’s effect on health among the Chinese diaspora in the context of the pandemic to contribute to the literature on discrimination in this population under the global public health crisis. Methods We analyzed data from 705 individuals of Chinese descent residing in countries outside of China who participated in a cross-sectional online survey between April 22 and May 9, 2020. This study utilized a structural equation model (SEM) to evaluate both direct and indirect effects of perceived discrimination on self-rated health (SRH) and to assess the mediating roles of psychological distress (namely, anxiety and depression) and social support from family and friends. Results This online sample comprised predominantly young adults and those of relatively high socioeconomic status. This study confirmed the total and direct effect of recently perceived discrimination on SRH and found the indirect effect was mainly mediated by depression. Mediating roles of anxiety and social support on the discrimination-health relationship were found insignificant in this SEM. Conclusions Our findings suggest discrimination negatively affected the well-being of the Chinese diaspora, and depression acted as a major mediator between the discrimination-health relationship. Therefore, interventions for reducing discrimination to preserve the well-being of the Chinese diaspora are necessary. Prompt intervention to address depression may partially relieve the disease burden caused by the surge of discrimination.

Recruitment process of a Chinese immigrant study in Canada

Abstract:The objectives of this article were to provide a comprehensive overview of the recruitment experience and participant characteristics in an antihypertensive dietary educational intervention pilot trial among Chinese Canadians. The recruitment was conducted in a community centre. Two recruitment approaches, self-referral and proactive recruitment, were used. Among 618 Chinese Canadians in the blood pressure screening, 105 (17.0%) individuals were eligible to participate in this trial. Of the 105 eligible individuals, 45 (42.9%) declined enrollment and 60 (57.1%) consented to participate in the trial and were recruited. The most common reason for refusal was being unable to access to the education location (n=19, 42.2%) followed by being too busy to participate (n=18, 40.0%). All participants were Chinese immigrants and the mean number of years living in Canada was 9.2. Most participants had low English proficiency, accepted Chinese culture more than Western culture, and had strong traditional health beliefs. It is concluded that both self-referral and proactive recruitment approaches were effective. Home-based interventions using Internet and telephone should be used as alternative delivery approaches to improve recruitment rate and facilitate participation.
Attitudes of Chinese immigrants in Canada towards the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine for prevention and management of COVID-19: a cross-sectional survey during the early stages of the pandemic

Abstract:Objection The objective of this study was to assess attitudes towards the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for COVID-19 among Chinese immigrants in Canada during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in April 2020 in Canada. Individuals aged 16 or older who were of Chinese origin and living in Canada at the time of the survey were invited to participate in an online survey. Descriptive and univariate statistics were performed to describe participant attitudes towards various preventive and treatment measures for COVID-19. Multiple logistic regression was used to identify independent associations with sociodemographic factors and attitudes. Results A total of 754 eligible respondents were included in the analysis. 65.8% of the participants were female, 77.2% had a university degree or higher and 28.6% were 55 years of age or older. Overall, 48.8% of the study participants believed that TCM was effective in preventing COVID-19% and 46.2% would use TCM if they had COVID-19-related symptoms. However, the corresponding numbers for western medicine were 20.8% and 39.9%, which were statistically lower (p<0.01). Older participants (55+vs <35, OR=3.55 (95% CI 2.05 to 6.14); 35–54 vs <35, OR=1.98 (95% CI 1.27 to 3.08)) and those who were dissatisfied with their income (OR=2.47(95% CI 1.56 to 3.92)) were more likely to believe TCM was effective against COVID-19. Similarly, older participants (55+vs <35, OR=3.13 (95% CI 1.79 to 5.46); 35–54 vs <35, OR=2.25 (95% CI 1.35 to 3.74)), females (OR=1.60 (95% CI 1.15 to 2.23)), and those born in mainland China (OR=10.49 (95% CI 2.32 to 47.39)) were more likely to use TCM if they had symptoms of COVID-19. Conclusion Despite the lack of scientific evidence to support its use, TCM was widely believed by Chinese immigrants in Canada to be an effective means of preventing COVID-19 and many also stated they would use it if they were experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.

Abstract:1576 Background: Despite the clinical importance of genetic testing and counseling for cancer risk reduction and treatment, minority populations are less likely to receive genetic testing and counseling or participate in genetics research, contributing to health disparities. In a randomized study of three modes of genetic counseling (GC3) conducted in three safety net hospitals, we noted a lower accrual of participants identifying as Chinese despite the availability of language-concordant study documents and bilingual staff. To understand barriers to recruitment, we conducted a mixed methods study using responses to the San Francisco Mammography Registry (SFMR) Breast Health History questionnaire (used for recruitment for GC3) and qualitative interviews with seven participants of the genetic counseling study. Methods: We extracted data from the SFMR from 2014-2018 for patients self-identifying as Asian and a control group of patients self-identifying as White. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients who agreed to be contacted for future breast health research. Survey data included information for personal history of breast cancer, history of biopsy, first-degree relative with cancer, age, and level of education. Z-tests were conducted for comparisons between groups. For qualitative analysis, seven Chinese-identifying participants were interviewed to understand why they chose to participate in the genetic counseling study and identify potential barriers and facilitators. Results: We included 121,415 patients (n=38,483 Asian). Asian patients had significantly lower rates of accepting future contact for breast health research studies (25.4% for Asians vs. 48.3% for White, p<0.0001). Lower rates were observed across Chinese (23.3%), Filipina (30.2%), Japanese (27.8%), and Vietnamese (23.3%) subgroups (p<0.0001 for all). A history of breast cancer (personal or family) or biopsy was associated with higher rates of acceptance within both Asian and White groups (p<0.001 for all comparisons). Education did not change participation rates as much in Asian patients as in White patients. The qualitative study found barriers across three domains: awareness, opportunity, and acceptance, with a referral from the participant’s medical team identified as a facilitator. Conclusions: Individuals identifying as Asian in the SFMR were less likely to agree to be contacted for future breast health research. We identified multilevel barriers through qualitative interviews. This has important implications for designing recruitment strategies for Asian populations.

Abstract:Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been significant variations in the level of adoption of public health recommendations across international jurisdictions and between cultural groups. Such variations have contributed to the dissimilar levels of risks associated with this world-changing viral infection and have highlighted the potential role of culture in assigning meaning and importance to personal protective behaviours. The purpose of this study is to describe the cultural factors during the COVID-19 pandemic that shaped protective health behaviours in the Chinese-Canadian community, one of the largest Chinese diasporas outside of Asia. Methods: A qualitative descriptive design was employed. Content analysis was used to analyze the data from semi-structured virtual interviews conducted with 83 adult Chinese-Canadian participants residing in a metropolitan area in the Province of Ontario, Canada. Findings: The cultural factors of collectivism, information seeking behaviour, symbolism of masks, and previous experience with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) emerged as themes driving the early adoption of personal protective behaviours within the Chinese-Canadian community during the first wave of COVID-19. These protective behaviours that emerged prior to the first nation-wide lockdown in Canada included physical distancing, mask use, and self-quarantine beyond what was required at the time. Conclusion: These findings have implications for the development of future public health interventions and campaigns targeting personal protective behaviours in this population and other ethnic minority populations with similar characteristics.
Challenges in psychological wellbeing for korean newcomer immigrant adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:This study aimed to explore challenging experiences in psychological wellbeing among Korean newcomer immigrant adolescents residing in an emerging immigrant community amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, which had been understudied in previous studies. This study utilized qualitative data from these immigrant adolescents and five of their mothers who had immigrated and lived in the United States for an average of 27 months. Using the Acculturative Stress Model and the Social Ecological Model as frameworks, this study analyzed their acculturative stress experiences as immigrants and as ethnic and linguistic minorities in the unique contexts of an emerging immigrant community and the pandemic, and how these challenging experiences impact their psychological wellbeing. Data collection took place from March to August 2020. Findings in this study demonstrated that these immigrant adolescents grappled with linguistic challenges, family conflicts, difficulties in establishing and maintaining social relationships, and heightened fears of increased anti-Asian hate crimes and discrimination. The unique contexts of the emerging immigrant community and the pandemic interfered with their adjustment, making these challenging experiences more difficult, all significantly impacting their psychological wellbeing. Schools and communities play pivotal roles in addressing linguistic challenges, fostering social connections for Korean newcomer immigrant adolescents, and promoting awareness of diversity and inclusion within these environments. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers to develop more effective support measures and channels for Korean immigrant adolescents in emerging immigrant communities, especially during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Seeking transnational social protection during a global pandemic: The case of Chinese immigrants in the United States

Abstract:Drawing on in-depth interviews with Chinese immigrants in the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic, this article examines the construction of immigrants' transnational social safety net and its gaps as the pandemic struck their home and host societies successively. Building upon the scholarship on transnational migration and transnational social protection, we argue that understanding how immigrants manage moments of crisis requires a cross-border optic. As we show, transnational connections can be translated into valuable material and immaterial resources. However, such protections are contingent upon the reception of their local receiving communities. The perceived hierarchy between the sending and receiving society, coupled with the U.S.' lack of experience with infectious disease outbreaks, limits the extent to which immigrants could put their transnational knowledge and resources to use. Our analyses shed new light upon the circumstances that empower and constrain immigrants as the global pandemic unsettles their daily routines.
Toward Sustaining Web-Based Senior Center Programming Accessibility With and for Older Adult Immigrants: Community-Based Participatory Research Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, many community-based organizations serving Asian Americans pivoted to provide web-based care and social services. Asian American community leaders in the United States Pacific Northwest, including Asian Health & Service Center expressed that there are older immigrant adults who experienced backlash from discrimination, fear, and anxiety owing in part to anti-Asian hate and isolation, including from infection precautions. Pivoting supported staying safe from COVID-19 transmission and anti-Asian hate crimes. Objective: This study aims to examine the readiness of diverse groups of older Asian American immigrant adults (Chinese, Koreans, and Vietnamese) to use a web-based senior center, including technology access and telehealth use, and to identify the psychosocial health impacts that a web-based senior center could be positioned to meet. Methods: A community-based participatory research approach was used to conduct a cross-sectional survey study in an Asian-based health and service center in 2022. We selected surveys from the National Institutes of Health-supported PhenX Toolkit. Analyses were performed using R software. Results: There was an 88.2% (216/245) response rate. Overall, 39.8% (86/216) of participants were Chinese, 25% (54/216) were Korean, and 24.5% (53/216) were Vietnamese. There were significant group differences in mobile data plans (P=.0005). Most had an unlimited mobile data plan (38/86, 44% Chinese; 39/54, 72% Koreans; 25/53, 47% Vietnamese). Significant group differences existed regarding whether they started using a new electronic device to communicate with friends or family after the COVID-19 outbreak (P=.0005); most were Korean participants (31/54, 57%). For written text and audio or video apps, most Chinese participants used WeChat (65/85, 76%; 57/84, 68%, respectively), most Koreans used KakaoTalk (49/54, 91%; 49/54, 91%, respectively), and most Vietnamese used Facebook Messenger for written text (32/50, 64%) and Apple Face Time (33/50, 66%) or Facebook Messenger (31/50, 62%) for audio or video. Significant group differences existed regarding whether to try telehealth (P=.0005); most Vietnamese expressed that they would never consider it (41/53, 77%). Significant group differences existed regarding how well they were able to concentrate (χ22=44.7; P<.0001); Chinese participants reported a greater inability (median 5, IQR 4-6). With regard to difficulties in life experiences (χ22=51; P<.0001), the median was 6 (IQR 5-7) for the Vietnamese group. Significant group differences existed in having had a family/household member's salary, hours, and contracts reduced (P=.0005) and having had a family/household member or friend fallen physically ill (P=.0005)-most Vietnamese (15/53, 28%) and Korean participants (10/53, 19%). Conclusions: To build an efficacious, web-based senior center with web-based care and social service options, more older adults need access to the internet and education about using technology-enabled communication devices. Addressing the unique psychosocial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on each group could improve health equity. The strength of the participating older adults was observed and honored.
Sociocultural Antecedents and Mechanisms of COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake among Mexican-Origin Youth

Abstract:Mexican-origin youth, as a large and growing population among U.S. youth, have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Understanding what, when, and how sociocultural factors may influence their COVID-19 vaccine uptake could inform current and future pandemic-response interventions promoting vaccination behaviors among Mexican-origin youth. The current study takes a developmental approach to reveal the long-term and short-term sociocultural antecedents of 198 Mexican-origin adolescents' COVID-19 vaccination uptake behaviors and explores the underlying mechanism of these associations based on the Knowledge-Attitude-Behavior model. The current study adopted Wave 1 (2012–2015) and Wave 4 (2021–2022) self-reported data from a larger study. Analyses were conducted to examine four mediation models for four sociocultural antecedents—daily discrimination, ethnic discrimination, foreigner stress, and family economic stress—separately. Consistent indirect effects of higher levels of concurrent sociocultural risk factors on a lower probability of COVID-19 vaccine uptake were observed to occur through less knowledge about the COVID-19 vaccines and less positive attitudes toward the COVID-19 vaccines at Wave 4. Significant direct effects, but in opposite directions, were found for the associations between Wave 1 ethnic discrimination/Wave 4 daily discrimination and the probability of COVID-19 vaccine uptake. The findings highlight the importance of considering prior and concurrent sociocultural antecedents and the Knowledge-Attitude-Behavior pathway leading to COVID-19 vaccination uptake among Mexican-origin youth and suggest that the impact of discrimination on COVID-19 vaccination uptake may depend on the type (e.g., daily or ethnic) and the context (e.g., during the COVID-19 pandemic or not) of discrimination experienced.
