Abstract:In this paper we mainly study sums of four rational squares with certain restrictions. Let Q≥0 be the set of nonnegative rational numbers. We establish the following four-square theorem for rational numbers: For any a, b, c, d ∈ Q≥0, each r ∈ Q≥0 can be written as x 2 + y+z+w with x, y, z, w ∈ Q≥0 such that ax+by+cz+dw is a rational square (or a rational cube). This paper also contains many conjectures; for example, for any positive integers a and b with gcd(a, b) = 1, we conjecture that each r ∈ Q≥0 can be written as aw + bx +y+ z with w, x, y, z ∈ Q.
A family of $m$-ovoids of parabolic quadrics

Abstract: We construct a family of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$, the parabolic quadric of $\textup{PG}(4,q)$, for $q\equiv 3\pmod 4$. The existence of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$ was only known for $q=3, 7,$ or $11$. Our construction provides the first infinite family of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$.Along the way, we also give a construction of $\frac{q+1}{2}$-ovoids in $Q(4,q)$ for $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$.

Abstract:Let $a,b\in\mathbb N=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $\lambda\in\{2,3\}$. We show that $4^a(4b+1)$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb N$ such that $x+2y+\lambda z$ is a positive square. We also pose some open conjectures; for example, we conjecture that any positive odd integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb N$ such that $x+2y+3z$ is a positive power of two.

Abstract:\begin{abstract} Let $\F$ be the finite field of odd prime power order $q$, We find explicit expressions for the number of triples $\{\al-1,\al,\al+1 \}$ of consecutive non-zero squares in $\F$ and similarly for the number of triples of consecutive non-square elements. A key ingredient is the evaluation of Jacobsthal sums over general finite fields by Katre and Rajwade. This extends results of Monzingo(1985) to non-prime fields. Curiously, the same machinery alows the evaluation of the number of consecutive quadruples $\{\al -1, \al,\al+1, \al +2\}$ of square and non-squares over $\F$, when $q$ is a power of 5. \end{abstract}

Abstract:We refine Lagrange’s four-square theorem in new ways by imposing some restrictions involving powers of two (including [Formula: see text]). For example, we show that each [Formula: see text] can be written as [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] (or [Formula: see text], or [Formula: see text]), and that we can write any positive integer as [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] (or [Formula: see text]) a power of four. We also prove that any [Formula: see text] can be written as [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] a square (or a cube). In addition, we pose some open conjectures for further research; for example, we conjecture that any integer [Formula: see text] can be written as [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text].

Abstract: Let $m$ be any positive integer, and let $\lambda\in\{2,3\}$. We show that $m^2$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w$ nonnegative integers such that $x+2y+\lambda z$ is a positive square. Abstract:A quadrilateral is said to be rational if its four sides, the two diagonals and the area are all expressible by rational numbers. The problem of constructing rational quadrilaterals dates back to the seventh century when Brahmagupta gave an elegant solution of the problem. In 1848 Kummer gave a method of generating all rational quadrilaterals. In this paper we present an alternative method of generating all rational quadrilaterals. For rational cyclic quadrilaterals, we obtain a complete parametrization and for noncyclic rational quadrilaterals, we give several parametrizations in terms of quadratic and quartic polynomials. The parametrizations obtained in this paper are simpler than the known parametrizations of rational quadrilaterals. We also describe how further parametrizations of rational quadrilaterals may be obtained.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new method of solving the classical diophantine equation $A^4+B^4=C^4+D^4$. Two methods of solving this equation, given by Euler, yield parametric solutions given by polynomials of degrees 7 and 13. Several other parametric solutions are now known, and with the exception of one solution of degree 11, all the published solutions are of degrees $6n+1$ for some integer $n$. The method described in this paper yields new parametric solutions of degrees 21, 39 and 75, that is, degrees that are expressible as $6n+3$.

Abstract:We study 4-by-4 squares formed by cards from the EvenQuads deck. EvenQuads is a card game with 64 cards where cards have 3 attributes with 4 values in each attribute. A quad is four cards with all attributes the same, all different, or half and half. We define Latin quad squares as squares where the cards in each row and column have different values for each attribute. We define semimagic quad squares as squares where each row and column form a quad. For magic quad squares, we add a requirement that the diagonals have to form a quad. We also define strongly magic quad squares. We analyze types of semimagic and strongly magic quad squares. We also calculate the number of semimagic, magic, and strongly magic quad squares for quad decks of any size. These squares can be described in terms of integers. Four integers form a quad when their bitwise XOR is zero.

Abstract:Translated from the Latin original "Novae demonstrationes circa resolutionem numerorum in quadrata" (1774). E445 in the Enestrom index. See Chapter III, section XI of Weil's "Number theory: an approach through history". Also, a very clear proof of the four squares theorem based on Euler's is Theorem 370 in Hardy and Wright, "An introduction to the theory of numbers", fifth ed. It uses Theorem 87 in Hardy and Wright, but otherwise does not assume anything else from their book. I translated most of the paper and checked those details a few months ago, but only finished last few parts now. If anything isn't clear please email me.

A New Transformation of the Magic Square of Squares

Abstract:We show arithmetic triplets of Gaussian squares are in 3-to-1 correspondence with Pythagorean triples thereof. This correspondence would transform a solution to the Magic Square of Squares puzzle into a larger structure of perfect Gaussian squares. In particular, we obtain the backwards result that a puzzle solution would generate non-trivial near-miss solutions in the Gaussian integers. Results are applied to popular near-misses.

Abstract:A square trisection is a problem of assembling three identical squares from a larger square, using a minimal number of pieces. This paper presents an historical overview of the square trisection problem starting with its origins in the third century. We detail the reasoning behind some of the main known solutions. Finally, we give a new solution and three ruler-and-compass constructions. We conclude with a conjecture of optimality of the proposed solution.

In this paper, via the theory of quadratic forms, we further study the representations $n=x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ (resp., $n=x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$) with certain linear restrictions involving primes. For example, we obtain the following results: (i) Each positive integer $nu003e1$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ ($x,y,z,winmathbb N$) with $x+y$ prime. (ii) Every positive integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ ($x,y,z,winmathbb N$) with $x+2y$ prime. (iii) Let $k$ be any positive integer, and let $dge 2^{k-1}$ be an odd integer with $4d^2+1$ prime. Abstract:Given a quadratic polynomial with rational coefficients, we investigate the existence of consecutive squares in the orbit of a rational point under the iteration of the polynomial. We display three different constructions of -parameter quadratic polynomials with orbits containing three consecutive squares. In addition, we show that there exists at least one polynomial of the form with a rational point whose orbit under this map contains four consecutive squares. This can be viewed as a dynamical analogue of a question of Fermat on rational squares in arithmetic progression. Finally, assuming a standard conjecture on exact periods of periodic points of quadratic polynomials over the rational field, we give necessary and sufficient conditions under which the orbit of a periodic point contains only rational squares.

Abstract:Several specific Franklin squares and magic squares are decomposed into their quotient and remainder squares. The results support the conjecture that Franklin used the Eulerian composition method to construct many of his squares.
