Abstract:Homogeneous incorporation of ultrafine metal oxide nanoparticles into the conductive carbon skeleton is highly favorable but remains challenging to craft the robust electrode materials for high-performance batteries. Herein, a CF3COOH-catalyzed twin-polymerization of titanium-containing single-source monomer is readily employed to produce narrowly-distributed (3−6 nm) and ultrafine (5 nm) TiO2 nanoparticles, which are uniformly embedded in the sulfur-doped carbon matrix (tp-TiO2@SC) by carbonizing the as-yielded composite precursor. This unique one-pot two-reaction process ensures the space-confined growth of TiO2 by synchronically generating mechanistically-coupled poly(2-thiophenemethanol) at the molecular level on the same time scale. Accordingly, the synergistical improvements in the electronic conductivity, surface/interface compatibility, electrochemical reactivity and structural stability, are responsible for significantly boosting lithium storage performance of the as-fabricated tp-TiO2@SC anode. Remarkably, tp-TiO2@SC delivers larger reversible capacity (667 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1, around 2 times over the theoretical capacity of anatase TiO2), higher rate capability (313 mAh g-1 at 500 mA g-1), and better cycling stability (retaining 582 mAh g-1 with a retention of 97% over 200 cycles at 50 mA g-1; a capacity fading of 0.0097 mAh g-1 per cycle over 2000 cycles at 5000 mA g-1) compared to its counterparts of bulk TiO2 and other TiO2/carbon hybrids. This work would offer new insights into the rationally crafting of ultrasmall metal oxide nanoparticles encapsulated in the conductive carbon frameworks as heterostructured electrodes for electrochemical energy applications.
