Group Psychotherapy: The Psychoanalytic Approach by S.H. Foulkes and E.J. Anthony. From the First to the Second Edition

Abstract:Group Psychotherapy: The Psychoanalytic Approach (1957) by S.H Foulkes and E.J. Anthony is a classic of the group analytic literature. For many, it equals the importance of Foulkes’ inaugural book, Introduction to Group Analytic Psychotherapy (Foulkes, 1948), and for some it even surpasses it1. As is fairly well known, there are two editions of the book; the first Penguin paperback edition dating from 1957 and a second one, which appeared 1965 as part of the Maresfield Library. As soon as it was followed by the second edition, the first edition duly went out of print and subsequently was no longer available to the wider public. Consequently, it became somewhat difficult to compare the existing Karnac reprint of the second edition (Foulkes and Anthony, 1984) to the original. So, at the time of the London Symposium of GASi in 2011, and at the initiative of Kevin Power and John Schlapobersky the idea was borne to reprint it. However, this project was slow to materialize. It finally did in 2014 by the time of the GASi Symposium in Lisbon where Kevin Power presented the reprint in the form of a Karnac paperback (Foulkes and Anthony, 2014). Only then did it became possible to review the two editions and to (re-)assess them in terms of their similarities and differences. As will be shown, they do not only exist but are also relevant with regard to the development of group analytic theory and practice. This is why they are being presented here.
