Abstract:Emotional and behavioral problems in adolescents are associated with suicidal ideation, but different dimensions of problems may be associated with different levels of suicidal ideation. The aim of this large-scale study was to explore the relationship between different dimensions of emotional and behavioral problems and suicidal ideation in Chinese adolescents and to determine whether sleep disorders play a mediating role in the relationship. In total, 20,475 students completed the questionnaire regarding emotional and behavioral problems, sleep quality and suicidal ideation. After adjustment for covariates, total emotional and behavioral difficulties (adjusted odds ratios (AOR) = 1.22, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.21-1.23) and sleep disorders (AOR = 4.17, 95% CI = 3.82-4.54) increased the risk of suicidal ideation, while prosocial problems (AOR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.90-0.93) decreased the risk of suicidal ideation. Sleep quality partially mediated the relationship between emotional and behavioral problems and suicidal ideation. The standardized indirect effects of emotional and behavioral difficulties on suicidal ideation (standardized β estimate = 0.031, 95% CI = 0.020, 0.044) and the effects of prosocial problems on suicidal ideation (standardized β estimate = -0.039, 95% CI = -0.045, -0.035) mediated by sleep quality were statistically significant (p < 0.001). Our study indicates that emotional and behavioral problems increase the risk of suicidal ideation. Additionally, sleep quality plays a mediating role in the association between emotional and behavioral problems and suicidal ideation.
Association between Sleep and Suicidal Ideation in Chinese Undergraduate Students

Abstract:Suicide is an important global public health issue, which deserves more attention. This study aims to examine the relative independent relationship between suicide ideation and subjective sleep quality, sleep hygiene, and insomnia symptoms in undergraduate students in China. This population-based study included 2379 undergraduate students aged 18-26, randomly recruited from three public universities in Shanghai. The participants completed four questionnaires: the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index; Sleep Hygiene Practice Scale; Insomnia Severity Index; and the Symptom Checklist 90 (specifically the depression and anxiety dimensions and Q15-suicide ideation). The results of Spearman's correlation analysis indicate that poor sleep quality, short sleep duration, poor sleep hygiene, and insomnia symptoms were all associated with suicidal ideation in undergraduate students. However, according to the results of the hierarchical linear regression, no experience of sharing a bedroom at home, poor relationship with roommates, short sleep duration, sleep medicine use, and good daytime function were related to suicidal ideation, after controlling for the symptoms of depression and anxiety, which may be important in the identification of suicidal ideation. Sleep problems are highly discoverable and modifiable, and have a low sense of shame, therefore, sleep interventions for individuals with suicidal ideation and poor sleep quality may be an efficient and effective approach to suicide prevention.
The mediating role of impulsivity between sleep quality and suicidal ideation in adolescent population: a multicenter cross-sectional study in the northeastern Sichuan, China

Abstract:Introduction: Suicidal ideation is a critical early stage in the progression towards suicidal be havior. Prior research has established links between sleep quality, impulsivity, and suicidal tendencies, yet the interaction among these factors has been less explored. This study aims to explore the mediating role of impulsivity in the relationship between sleep quality and suicidal ideation in adolescents. Methods: Employing a cross-sectional study design, 6,974 questionnaires were distributed,including the Socio-demographic Characteristics Questionnaire, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, the Positive and Negative Suicide Ideation Inventory,and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Scale. The participants were high school and middle school students from 33 schools in northeastern Sichuan, China, selected through random cluster sampling. Results: Of these 6,786 questionnaires were analyzed. The participant distribution included 47.2% male and 52.8% female students, with 68.3% from junior schools and 31.7% from senior schools. The prevalence of suicidal ideation was found to be 13.6%. The analysis, which involved correlation analysis and the construction of a structural equation model, revealed that sleep quality had a significant positive effect on impulsivity (β:0.289,p < 0.05), and impulsivity, in turn, had a positive impact on suicidal ideation (β:0.355,p < 0.05).Moreover, sleep quality was directly linked to suicidal ideation (β:0.208,p < 0.05). Thus, sleep quality affects suicidal ideation both directly and indirectly through impulsivity. Discussion: The results of this study suggest that both sleep quality and impulsivity are significant direct influencers of suicidal ideation among adolescents in the region studied, with impulsivity also playing an indirect role in the relationship between sleep quality and suicidal ideation.

Abstract:Background: Sleep disturbance may exacerbate the risk of suicide among youth with depression, but whether this association is independent of psychopathology requires further study. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 576 youths (13-25 years old) recruited from January 2022 to May 2023. The patients were first divided into two groups by the presence of suicidal ideation according to the Columbia-Suicide Severity Scale (C-SSRS). Sleep quality was assessed by the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) and mental health with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA). Logistic regression was conducted to analyze the association between sleep disturbance and suicidal ideation, adjusted for depressive symptoms severity. Results: The suicidal ideation group exhibited more severe sleep disturbances, anxiety symptoms, and depressive symptoms than the non-suicidal ideation group. Pearson correlation showed that sleep disturbance (AIS) was significantly correlated with the severity of anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the AIS factor "daytime dysfunction" (β = 0.145; OR = 1.156, 95 % CI: 1.02, 1.309; p = 0.023) was significantly associated with suicidal ideation after adjusting for demographic characteristics and depressive symptoms severity. Limitations: Due to the cross-sectional nature of the data, no causal inference can be made regarding the observed associations between sleep disturbance and suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Sleep disturbance, particularly in the realm of daytime dysfunction, is associated with increased suicidal ideation among depressed youth. Clinicians need to assess and manage sleep disturbance in the context of suicidal ideation for young depression patients.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the relationship between suicide risk, perceived stress, and sleep quality through a structural equation modeling approach. This study used convenience sampling to survey 780 undergraduate and graduate students aged 18–30 years. Students were invited to participate in the online questionnaires, which included the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation, the Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The results showed that suicide ideation and suicidal behavior were positively correlated with childhood trauma, stress, and sleep. A well-fitted structural equation model (χ2 = 1.52, df = 1, χ2/df = 1.52, RMSEA = 0.03, CFI = 1.00, NFI = 1.00) was constructed in this study. The hierarchical regression test showed significance in all the path coefficients of the model. The total effect of emotional abuse on suicide behaviors was 49.5%. The mediating effects accounted for 73.7% of the total effects of emotional abuse on suicidal behaviors. The results demonstrate efforts targeting stress and poor sleep might mitigate the risk of suicidal behaviors among individuals with early emotional abuse experiences.

Abstract:Background Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among adolescents. Studies have shown that persistent suicidal ideation has a more important effect on suicidal behavior. The objective of this study was to identify predictors of persistent suicidal ideation. Methods Data were collected from 4225 Chinese middle and high school students. These adolescents were assessed for suicidal ideation at baseline and the second year. We used multinomial logistic regression ( n = 4171) for the predictive effect of these factors on persistent suicidal ideation. We controlled for gender, residence, clinical diagnosis, clinical diagnosis family, suicide planning, and suicide attempts. Results Depressive symptoms are essential in predicting persistent suicidal ideation (OR = 14.0; p < 0.001). Persistent suicidal ideation was predicted by sleep disorders, such as poor sleep quality (OR = 2.3; p = 0.008), difficulty falling asleep (OR = 2.4; p = 0.005), frequently midnight awakening (OR = 1.9; p = 0.044), and frequent nightmares (OR = 2.1; p = 0.040). There was a significant association between concern with persistent ideation and parental-peer alienation (OR for father, 1.9[ p = 0.024]; OR for mother, 3.1[ p < 0.001]; OR for peer, 2.3[ p = 0.003]). Limitations All measures are based on self-report rather than objective assessment or clinical diagnostic assessment. Conclusions Persistent suicidal ideation had a more important role in influencing suicide planning and attempt. Interventions targeting sleep disorders and attention to attachments in the home and school are particularly important in preventing persistent suicidal ideation in adolescents.

Abstract:Suicide among college students is a challenging problem globally. Yet, the association between sleep quality, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation remains unclear. This study aims to understand if depressive symptoms mediate the relationship between sleep quality and suicide ideation and whether the interaction between depressive symptoms and sleep quality on suicidal ideation is additive. A total of 1182 college students were recruited, and sleep quality, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation were assessed using questionnaires. Univariate analysis, logistic regression analysis, linear regression models, and the Sobel test were performed. The results showed that, among college students, poor sleep quality was positively associated with suicidal ideation, and the association was mediated through depressive symptoms. Moreover, there was a significant additive interaction between poor sleep quality and depressive symptoms on suicidal ideation. These findings suggest that, in the process of preventing and treating suicidal ideation in college students with sleep disorders, we should focus on the evaluation and intervention of depressive symptoms and adopt multidisciplinary team interventions for college students with sleep disorders and depression.

Abstract:Background: A relatively small number of studies have researched the relationship between sleep duration and suicidal ideation, attempts, and behavior. This research aims to investigate the link between sleep duration and suicide in Chinese adolescents, and to examine the role of depression as a mediating factor. Method: Data were collected from 3315 students using a multi-stage random cluster sampling method and self-administered questionnaires. The study applied logistic regression to investigate the relationship between sleep duration and various forms of suicidal behavior, and mediation analysis to understand how depression might influence this relationship. Results: The average sleep duration among the adolescents was 7.25 h (±0.20), with 59.67 % reporting insufficient sleep. The logistic regression analysis showed that longer sleep duration is linked with lower risks of suicidal ideation (OR: 0.753, 95%CI: 0.696 to 0.814), suicidal attempts (OR: 0.830, 95%CI: 0.748 to 0.922), and suicidal behavior (OR: 0.841, 95%CI: 0.713 to 0.992). Analysis using restricted cubic spline plots indicated the connection between sleep duration and these suicidal factors was not linear. The study found that depression plays a partial mediating role between sleep duration and suicidal ideation, with an effect of 52.29 %. Limitations: The cross-sectional study design could not prove causation. Conclusions: There is a clear non-linear association between sleep duration and suicidal tendencies in adolescents, with depression acting as a mediator. This suggests that future research could focus on sleep and mood management as ways to address suicide risk in this age group.
Sleep influences daily suicidal ideation through affective reactivity to interpersonal events among high-risk adolescents and young adults

Abstract:Background: Identifying proximal risk factors for suicidal ideation that are modifiable and relevant for adolescents and young adults is critical for suicide prevention. This study used an intensive monitoring approach to examine whether objectively- and subjectively- measured sleep characteristics predict next-day suicidal ideation occurrence and intensity through affective reactivity to interpersonal events in young people at high risk for suicide. Methods: Participants included 59 (13-23 years; 76% White; 75% female) adolescents and young adults undergoing intensive outpatient program treatment for depression and suicidality. Participants completed daily ratings of suicidal ideation, sleep quality, and affective reactivity to positive and negative interpersonal events for up to 3 months (M = 56 days, SD = 24.13). Actigraphy captured behavioral sleep duration and timing. Multilevel modeling was used to evaluate within-person fluctuations in sleep and affective reactivity as predictors of suicidal ideation, and multilevel mediation tested the indirect effects of sleep on suicidal ideation via affective reactivity to interpersonal events. Results: Results indicate significant indirect effects of objectively measured sleep duration and subjective sleep quality on next-day suicidal ideation via affective reactivity to negative and positive interpersonal events, respectively. Shorter-than-usual sleep predicted the presence and intensity of next-day suicidal ideation via heightened affective reactivity to negative interpersonal events. Worse sleep quality than usual predicted next-day suicidal ideation via reduced affective reactivity to positive interpersonal events. Conclusions: Affectivity reactivity is a proximal mechanism through which sleep indices may influence risk for suicidal thinking on a daily basis. Findings highlight the utility of targeting sleep and emotion regulation in suicide prevention among adolescents and young adults at high-risk for suicide.
Effects of sleep quality on suicide risk in COVID-19 patients: The chain mediating of anxiety and depressive symptoms

Abstract:Background: Although current studies have identified sleep disorders as an independent risk factor for suicide, the relationship between sleep disorders and suicide risk has not been well established. This study explored whether anxiety and depressive symptoms are used as mediators to participate in the impact of sleep quality on suicide risk. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. We administered a psychological questionnaire to the participants, using a combination of self-assessment and psychiatrist assessment.Sleep quality, suicide risk, level of anxiety and depressive symptoms were assessed by PSQI, NGASR, SAS and SDS.The study subjects were 391 hospitalized COVID-19 patients from Wuhan hospitals. We used model 6 in the PROCESS (version 3.5) plug-in of SPSS software to conduct mediation test with sleep quality as the independent variable, suicide risk as the dependent variable, level of anxiety and depressive symptoms as intermediate variables. Results: The severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms and the risk of suicide in the sleep disorder group (63.15 ± 13.71, 59.85 ± 13.38, 6.52 ± 3.67) were higher than those in the non-sleep disorder group (49.83 ± 13.14, 44.87 ± 10.19, 2.87 ± 3.26) (P < 0.001). The mediation model works well, The total indirect effect was 0.22 (95%CI = [0.17, 0.28]), and the direct effect was 0.16 (95%CI = [0.08, 0.24]). Limitations: This study used a self-assessment scale. Conclusions: Anxiety and depressive symptoms played a chain mediating role between sleep quality and suicide risk.
Sleep disturbance and suicidal ideation mediated by psychotic-like experiences in adolescents: a two-wave longitudinal study

Abstract:Abstract Study Objectives Sleep disturbance may cause suicidal ideation (SI). This study aimed to examine their co-occurrence rate among adolescents and investigate whether psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) mediate this association. Methods A total of 17 722 Chinese adolescents were included in this two-wave longitudinal study. The baseline survey (time 1, T1) was conducted between April 21 and May 12, 2021, and the follow-up survey (time 2, T2) was implemented between December 17 and 26, 2021. At T1, participants completed questionnaires to assess their sleep disturbance, sleep duration, PLEs, SI, depressive symptoms, and sociodemographic characteristics. At T2, participants reported their PLEs, SI, and negative life events. Results The SI prevalence decreased from 20.2% (T1) to 18.4% (T2). Participants with SI showed significantly higher prevalence of sleep disturbance and short sleep duration compared to those without SI. Baseline sleep disturbance and short sleep duration were both associated with the increased risk of SI 6 months later. These longitudinal links were mediated by PLEs, independent of baseline covariates and negative life events. Conclusions These findings provide a novel insight into the mechanism linking sleep problems and suicidality, and stress the significance of assessing and addressing sleep problems and PLEs for adolescent suicide prevention and intervention.

Associations of depressive and anxiety symptoms with non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal attempt among Chinese adolescents: The mediation role of sleep quality

Abstract:Background: Associations of depressive and anxiety symptoms with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide attempt (SA) are not well understood. We aimed to examine these associations among Chinese adolescents, and whether any potential association is mediated through sleep quality. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 1,771 (994 boys [56.1%] and 777 girls [43.9%], mean [SD] age was 12.9 [0.6] years) adolescents who participated in the baseline survey of the Chinese Adolescent Health Growth Cohort (CAHGC) study. Depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, NSSI, SA and sleep quality were measured by validated questionnaire. Logistic regression models were employed to estimate the associations of depression and anxiety with NSSI and SA. Mediation analyses were conducted to explore the mediate effect of sleep quality. Results: The 12-month prevalence of NSSI and SA was 17.1 and 8.3%, respectively. Depressive and anxiety symptoms were significantly associated with NSSI (the adjusted odds ratio [aOR] was 1.89 [95% CI 1.34–2.65] for depressive symptoms and 2.84 [95% CI 2.05–3.94] for anxiety symptoms) and SA (the aOR was 3.20 [95% CI 2.03–5.05] for depressive symptoms and 2.98 [95% CI 1.84–4.84] for anxiety symptoms). No significant gender differences were found in the associations. The mediation proportion of sleep quality on the association of depressive and anxiety symptoms with NSSI, as well as depressive and anxiety symptoms with SA were 21.1, 13.9, 13.6, and 14.7, respectively. Conclusion: Independent associations of depressive and anxiety symptoms with NSSI and SA were observed in Chinese adolescents, and there were no significant gender differences in the associations. Moreover, these associations were partially mediated through sleep quality. Targeted interventions for adolescents' NSSI and SA should focus on those who have depressive and anxiety symptoms, and poor sleep quality.

Abstract:Objective Sleep problems are a significant risk factor for identifying and preventing suicidal involvement among adolescents. However, there is limited evidence to assess the underlying mechanisms between them. This study investigated the longitudinal relationship between sleep problems and suicidal behavior and examined whether this relationship was moderated by negative emotions, low self‐control, and nonsuicidal self‐injury (NSSI). Methods From December 2020 onward, we assessed 1214 Chinese secondary school adolescents (60.7% were boys, aged 13–19 years) three times, 6 months apart. Results In the direct effects model, sleep problems were found to have a positive impact on adolescent suicidal behavior. In the indirect effects model, we observed that sleep problems were associated with an elevated risk of suicidal behavior through several pathways: one‐mediator path of negative emotions, low self‐control, and NSSI, respectively; two‐mediator path of negative emotions via low self‐control, negative emotions via NSSI, and low self‐control via NSSI, and three‐mediator path from negative emotions to NSSI via low self‐control. Conclusions This longitudinal study provides evidence that sleep problems in adolescents may increase suicidal behavior by exacerbating negative emotions, weakening self‐control, and promoting NSSI. Abstract:Sleep quality is crucial for the personal well-being of healthcare professionals and the health outcomes of their patients. This study aims to explore the relationship between psychological resilience (PR), perceived social support (PSS), psychological distress (comprising anxiety,depression,and stress), and sleep quality. It also examines whether PSS and psychological distress function as chain mediators between PR and sleep quality. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted using a convenient sampling method, with 454 participants included. The survey instruments included the Connor and Davidson Resilience Scale, the Perceived Social Support Scale, the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Structural equation modeling revealed that PR significantly predicted sleep quality of Chinese medical staff. Psychological distress was identified as a mediating factor between PR and sleep quality. However, PSS did not directly mediate the relationship between PR and sleep quality. Instead, PSS and psychological distress were found to play a chain mediating role in the relationship between PR and sleep quality. This study provides new insights into the impact of PR on sleep quality, highlights the importance of PSS and psychological distress, and suggests practical implications for enhancing sleep quality among medical staff.

Abstract:This study investigated how sleep quality affects the global severity of psychiatric symptoms, including suicidality, in young adults. Poor sleep quality has a significant impact on mental health and should therefore be given special attention in suicidal treatment. 1,214 participants (914 females; age: M = 25.81, SD = 6.35) completed the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18), the Scale for Suicidal Experience and Behavior (SSEV), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) via an online survey. Correlation statistics and path analysis were conducted for data evaluation. Thereby, anxiety and depression but not somatization mediated the relationship between sleep quality and suicidality. Our findings confirm the putative link between diminished sleep quality and increased suicidality and may lead to an early detection of suicidal behavior.

Abstract:Background: The prevalence of sleep quality problems and depression in the college student population has attracted widespread attention. However, the factors influencing this are still unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between self-compassion (S-C), sleep quality (SQ), and depression (DEP) among college students and examine the mediating effects of coping style (CS) between the variables. Methods: A total of 1,038 Chinese university students were recruited for the study. The study used the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 21 (DASS-21), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to conduct the survey. Results: The self-compassion and coping style showed significant negative correlations with sleep quality and depression. Coping style partially mediated the relationship between self-compassion and sleep quality. The coping style also fully mediated the relationship between self-compassion and depression. Conclusion: This study reveals the associations between self-compassion and sleep quality and depression, and the mediating role of coping style among college students. This study provides valuable insights for improving sleep quality and alleviating depression problems among college students. It emphasizes the importance of self-compassion and positive coping style.

Psychosocial Problems and Suicidal Ideation in Chinese Adolescents: Findings from a Longitudinal Study

Abstract:Background: Few studies have explored the important role of different dimensions of emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs), perceived social support and loneliness in predicting suicidal ideation among Chinese adolescents. Based on a 6-month longitudinal study conducted in Taizhou high schools, we aimed to explore the associations between psychosocial problems and suicidal ideation in Chinese adolescents, and to ascertain whether co-occurring psychosocial problems increase suicidal ideation.Methods: A total of 3,267 students were eligible for this analysis. Perceived social support was assessed using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Loneliness and suicidal ideation were assessed using the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) 3-Item Loneliness Scale and one item from the Children's Depression Inventory. The Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire assessed EBPs. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate longitudinal associations between each psychosocial problem (lack of perceived social support from family, friends, and significant others, loneliness, emotional, conduct and peer problems, hyperactivity, and poor prosocial behavior) at baseline and suicidal ideation at follow-up. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to examine the association between the number of psychosocial problems at baseline and suicidal ideation at follow-up. Results: The multivariable logistic regression results showed that after adjusting for baseline suicidal ideation, sociodemographic covariates and depressive symptoms, low level of perceived social support from family (OR =1.78; 95% CI: 1.10-2.87), emotional problems (OR =2.35; 95% CI: 1.41-3.79), and poor prosocial behavior (OR =1.74; 95% CI: 1.08-2.79) were significant predictors of suicidal ideation among the adolescents. The risk of suicidal thoughts increased as number of psychosocial problems increased. The participants with five or more psychosocial problems had higher risk of having serious suicidal thoughts than those with no problem (relative risk ratio =4.50; 95% CI: 2.13-9.49).Conclusions: The study confirmed the predictive role of multiple psychosocial problems on suicidal ideation, and the accumulative effect of co-occurring psychosocial problems in magnifying the risk of suicidal ideation. More integrated and holistic approaches need to be taken to identify high-risk groups and provide interventions of suicidality in adolescents.
