Abstract:: Teamwork is cooperative, participative and power sharing. In science of science, few studies have looked at the impact of team collaboration from the perspective of team power and hierarchy. This research examines in depth the relationships between team power and team success in the field of Computer Science (CS) using the DBLP dataset. Team power and hierarchy are measured using academic age and team success is quantified by citation. By analyzing 4,106,995 CS teams, we find that high power teams with flat structure have the best performance. On the contrary, low-power teams with hierarchical structure is a facilitator of team performance. These results are consistent across different time periods and team sizes.

Abstract:Accurately evaluating the impact of scientific papers is crucial. However, existing methodologies face certain challenges, including latent factors affecting citation behaviors and dynamic intrinsic of citation networks. To address these challenges, this study introduces a novel framework named CoDy (modeling scholarly Collaboration and temporal Dynamics in citation networks for impact prediction). CoDy strategically predicts author collaborations as an auxiliary task, forecasting not only the number of current collaborations between scholars but also the number of future collaborations among them. Besides, CoDy proposes a fine-grained temporal encoding module to model the multiple different temporal patterns for publication and citation. Extensive experimental validations demonstrate CoDy's effectiveness in predicting citation counts and classifying impact levels. In-depth analyses provide further validation of its reliability and robustness. CoDy can significantly enhance impact prediction by explicitly modeling collaboration and temporal patterns and offer valuable insights into paper impact formation.

Abstract:Collaboration is one of the key features in scientific research. With more and more knowledge accumulated in each discipline, individual researcher can only be an expert in some specific areas. As such, there are more and more multi-author papers nowadays. Many works in scientometrics have been devoted to analyze the structure of collaboration networks. However, how the collaboration impacts an author’s future career is much less studied in the literature. In this paper, we provide empirical evidence with American Physical Society data showing that collaboration with outstanding scientists (measured by their total citation) will significantly improve young researchers’ career. Interestingly, this effect is strongly nonlinear and subject to a power function with an exponent <1. Our work is also meaningful from practical point of view as it could be applied to identifying the potential young researchers.

Team formation and team impact: The balance between team freshness and repeat collaboration

Abstract:Incorporating fresh members into teams is considered a pathway to team creativity. However, whether freshness improves team performance or not remains unclear, as well as the optimal involvement of fresh members for team performance. Focusing on team impact, one important dimension of team performance, this study uses a group of authors on the byline of a publication as a proxy for a scientific team and quantifies team impact by citations of a paper authored by this team, i.e., article team impact. We extend an indicator, i.e., article team freshness, to measure the extent to which a scientific team incorporates new members, by calculating the fraction of new collaboration relations established within the team. Based on more than 43 million scientific publications covering more than a half-century of research from Microsoft Academic Graph, this study provides a holistic picture of the current development of article team freshness by outlin-ing the temporal evolution of freshness, and its disciplinary distribution. Subsequently, using a multivariable regression approach, we examine the association between article team freshness and papers' short-term and long-term citations. The major findings are as follows: (1) article team freshness in scientific teams has been increasing in the past half-century; (2) there exists an inverted-U-shaped association between article team freshness and papers' citations in all the disciplines and different periods; (3) article team impact is hampered by article team freshness in small-sized teams, while medium-sized and large-sized teams can benefit more from article team freshness before the fraction of new collaboration reaches its turning point. The findings of this study provide implications for the practice of team formation and team management in science.

Abstract:In scientific research collaboration, researchers collaborate with different scholars throughout their career stages. Researchers at different career stages may play various roles in science teams. This paper focuses only on the researchers' roles in their respective science teams, defined as "relative roles " here, rather than comparing roles among researchers. As the academic age of researchers is increasing, researchers formulate the positive (e.g., junior-peer-senior) or negative growth trajectories (e.g., peer-peer-junior) of the relative roles throughout their career stages, which are defined as the "relative role growth patterns ". Further, these growth patterns can be divided into different "relative role growth types " according to their several common characteristics. By constructing ego-centric networks of researchers based on academic age, this paper investigates the changing relative roles of researchers at different career stages and relative role growth types summarized from multiple growth patterns, and then analyzes the collaborative ability (i.e., collaboration frequencies and number of collaborators) and research performance under different growth types. In addition, we also discuss the influence of collaborators on the formation of relative role growth types. We find 13 relative role growth patterns and summarize them into four growth types. The four growth types have diverse collaborative ability and research performance. Different collaborators have different effects on the formation of growth types of researchers. Collaborators who have high productivity and high citations per paper have a positive influence on researchers' growth and vice versa. This study could be useful for researchers planning career development, also for policymakers and university administrators.
Collaboration Size and Citation Impact in Big Data Research.

Abstract:With rapid and widespread application, Big Data has attracted growing attention from academic communities. Concerning the importance of collaboration in scientific research, the current study focused on profiles of collaboration types and size, as well as their relations with citation impact based on publications indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) from 2003 to 2017, so as to provide decision-making basis for optimizing collaboration options. Results show that collaborated publications, as well as collaboration size (i.e., number of authors, institutions and countries) in Big Data have grown substantially. Within-institutional collaboration plays a main role, while international collaboration takes relatively low but rising share. Citation impact is dependent on collaboration types with international collaboration the most efficient, followed by domestic one. None-collaboration receives the least citations. Team size increases over time in general, and is positively related with citation impact, and such phenomenon exists in different collaboration types. Among all the research fields involved, Mathematics and Computer Science is the main contributor in publications and also benefits the most in collaboration despite of its limited team size.

Abstract:AbstractScientific collaboration is vital to many fields, and it is common to see scholars seek out experienced researchers or experts in a domain with whom they can share knowledge, experience, and resources. To explore the diversity of research collaborations, this article performs a temporal analysis on the scientific careers of researchers in the field of computer science. Specifically, we analyze collaborators using 2 indicators: the research topic diversity, measured by the Author-Conference-Topic model and cosine, and the impact diversity, measured by the normalized standard deviation of h-indices. We find that the collaborators of high-impact researchers tend to study diverse research topics and have diverse h-indices. Moreover, by setting PhD graduation as an important milestone in researchers' careers, we examine several indicators related to scientific collaboration and their effects on a career. The results show that collaborating with authoritative authors plays an important role prior to a researcher's PhD graduation, but working with non-authoritative authors carries more weight after PhD graduation.
Team careers in science: formation, composition and success of persistent collaborations

Abstract:Teams are the fundamental units propelling innovation and advancing modern science. A rich literature links the fundamental features of teams, such as their size and diversity, to academic success. However, such analyses fail to capture temporal patterns, treating each group of co-authors as a distinct unit and neglecting the existence of persistent collaborations. By contrast, teams are dynamical entities, made of core members who consistently work together, surrounded by transient members who sporadically participate. Leveraging on a large dataset of over 205 million scientific papers published since 1900, we extract 511,550 core teams of statistically significant persistent collaborations of pairs and larger groups of scientists. We look into `team careers' investigating their trajectories in time, characterizing their formation, productivity and eventual dissolution. We characterize team composition along multiple dimensions, including age, academic affiliation and scientific disciplines. Finally, we investigate the academic impact of persistent collaborations, hallmarking the key compositional features underlying their success. Our work sheds light on the nature of persistent teams, informing researchers, institutions and funding agencies about the dynamics of their formation, evolution and success.

The Impact of Heterogeneous Shared Leadership in Scientific Teams

Abstract:Leadership is evolving dynamically from an individual endeavor to shared efforts. This paper aims to advance our understanding of shared leadership in scientific teams. We define three kinds of leaders, junior (10-15), mid (15-20), and senior (20+) based on career age. By considering the combinations of any two leaders, we distinguish shared leadership as heterogeneous when leaders are in different age cohorts and homogeneous when leaders are in the same age cohort. Drawing on 1,845,351 CS, 254,039 Sociology, and 193,338 Business teams with two leaders in the OpenAlex dataset, we identify that heterogeneous shared leadership brings higher citation impact for teams than homogeneous shared leadership. Specifically, when junior leaders are paired with senior leaders, it significantly increases team citation ranking by 1-2%, in comparison with two leaders of similar age. We explore the patterns between homogeneous leaders and heterogeneous leaders from team scale, expertise composition, and knowledge recency perspectives. Compared with homogeneous leaders, heterogeneous leaders are more adaptive in large teams, have more diverse expertise, and trace both the newest and oldest references.

Quantifying the impact of weak, strong, and super ties in scientific careers

Abstract:Scientists are frequently faced with the important decision to start or terminate a creative partnership. This process can be influenced by strategic motivations, as early career researchers are pursuers, whereas senior researchers are typically attractors, of new collaborative opportunities. Focusing on the longitudinal aspects of scientific collaboration, we analyzed 473 collaboration profiles using an ego-centric perspective which accounts for researcher-specific characteristics and provides insight into a range of topics, from career achievement and sustainability to team dynamics and efficiency. From more than 166,000 collaboration records, we quantify the frequency distributions of collaboration duration and tie-strength, showing that collaboration networks are dominated by weak ties characterized by high turnover rates. We use analytic extreme-value thresholds to identify a new class of indispensable `super ties', the strongest of which commonly exhibit >50% publication overlap with the central scientist. The prevalence of super ties suggests that they arise from career strategies based upon cost, risk, and reward sharing and complementary skill matching. We then use a combination of descriptive and panel regression methods to compare the subset of publications coauthored with a super tie to the subset without one, controlling for pertinent features such as career age, prestige, team size, and prior group experience. We find that super ties contribute to above-average productivity and a 17% citation increase per publication, thus identifying these partnerships - the analog of life partners - as a major factor in science career development.

Abstract:The shift from individual effort to collaborative output has benefited science, with scientific work pursued collaboratively having increasingly led to more highly impactful research than that pursued individually. However, understanding of how the diversity of a collaborative team influences the production of knowledge and innovation is sorely lacking. Here, we study this question by breaking down the process of scientific collaboration of 32.9 million papers over the last five decades. We find that the probability of producing a top-cited publication increases as a function of the diversity of a team of collaborators---namely, the distinct number of institutions represented by the team. We discover striking phenomena where a smaller, yet more diverse team is more likely to generate highly innovative work than a relatively larger team within one institution. We demonstrate that the synergy of collaboration diversity is universal across different generations, research fields, and tiers of institutions and individual authors. Our findings suggest that collaboration diversity strongly and positively correlates with the production of scientific innovation, giving rise to the potential revolution of the policies used by funding agencies and authorities to fund research projects, and broadly the principles used to organize teams, organizations, and societies.
A Study on Citation Impact with Age Diversity among Disciplines

Abstract:With the ongoing evolution of scientific research collaboration in depth and breadth, the age distribution among paper collaborators is becoming increasingly varied. The question of whether this age distribution affects the quality of collaborative papers has emerged as a significant topic in recent research. In this study, we have compiled a comprehensive scientific database comprising more than 3.5 million papers from over 180 countries. These papers include multiple attribute information about their authors. We define the age diversity of a paper based on the academic ages of its co-authors and examine the relationship between age diversity and citation impact using regression analyses. Our findings reveal a clear upward trend in the age diversity of authors over time. The results indicate that the average age diversity of highly cited papers is consistently higher than that of general papers across the entire timeline, spanning four disciplines: economics, engineering, computer science, and physics. Moreover, we demonstrate a significantly positive correlation between age diversity and citation impact. In the aforementioned four disciplines, an increase in the collaborators’ age diversity is associated with a corresponding rise in the paper’s citation impact. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of age-related dynamics in scientific collaboration. It also offers insights into the age distribution of research teams, providing practical suggestions for researchers engaged in collaborative endeavors.

This study initially tries to understand how research team size may influence the impact of a study measured by number of citations. Thus, publications in the biology domain are specifically investigated by correlation analysis between team size and scientific impact. The weak correlation suggests that larger team size can positively increase the impact of scientific publications on average; however, it cannot literally bring more highly cited articles.

Abstract:The teams literature suggests that team tenure improves team psychological safety climate and climate strength in a linear fashion, but the empirical findings to date have been mixed. Alternatively, theories of group formation suggest that new and longer tenured teams experience greater team psychological safety climate than moderately tenured teams. Adopting this second perspective, we used a sample of 115 research and development teams and found that team tenure had a curvilinear relationship with team psychological safety climate and climate strength. Supporting group formation theories, team psychological safety climate and climate strength were higher in new and longer tenured teams compared with moderately tenured teams. Moreover, we found a curvilinear relationship between team tenure and average team member creative performance as partially mediated by team psychological safety climate. Team psychological safety climate improved average team member task performance only when team psychological safety climate was strong. Likewise, team tenure influenced average team member task performance in a curvilinear manner via team psychological safety climate only when team psychological safety climate was strong. Abstract:Collaboration has strongly intensified recently and its characteristics are attractive and multidimensional. This study explored the trends, characteristics and citation impact of collaboration as well as collaboration networks for the macrolevel of country, the mesolevel of institution and the microlevel of author, using highly cited articles in environmental engineering (EE) category of the Science Citation Index Expanded. A data visualization and manipulation software, Gephi 0.9.1 was used to visualize the relationships of collaboration among authors, institutions and countries. Although collaboration in general is known to be beneficial in many research areas, collaboration is not beneficial for highly cited research in the EE field. Single author, single country and single institution articles were more visible than articles involving international collaboration, interinstitutional collaboration and individual collaboration. There were certain group collaborations, which played an important role in publishing highly cited articles in the EE field.

Abstract:Collaboration is an integral element of the scientific process that often leads to findings with significant impact. While extensive efforts have been devoted to quantifying and predicting research impact, the question of how collaborative behavior influences scientific impact remains unaddressed. In this work, we study the interplay between scientists' collaboration signatures and their scientific impact. As the basis of our study, we employ an ArnetMiner dataset with more than 1.7 million authors and 2 million papers spanning over 60 years. We formally define a scientist's collaboration signature as the distribution of collaboration strengths with each collaborator in his or her academic ego network, which is quantified by four measures: sociability, dependence, diversity, and self-collaboration. We then demonstrate that the collaboration signature allows us to effectively distinguish between researchers with dissimilar levels of scientific impact. We also discover that, even from the early stages of one's researcher career, a scientist's collaboration signature can help to reveal his or her future scientific impact. Finally, we find that as a representative group of outstanding computer scientists, Turing Award winners collectively produce distinctive collaboration signatures throughout the entirety of their careers. Our conclusions on the relationship between collaboration signatures and scientific impact give rise to important implications for researchers who wish to expand their scientific impact and more effectively stand on the shoulders of "collaborators.".

Abstract:<p>Performance assessment is ubiquitous and crucial in people analytics. Scientific impact, particularly, plays a significant role in the academia. This paper attempts to understand researchers' career trajectories by considering the research community as a social network, where individuals build ties with each other via coauthorship. The resulting linkage facilitates information flow and affects researchers' future impact. Consequently, we systematically investigate the career trajectories of researchers with respect to research impact using the social capital theory as our theoretical foundation. Specifically, for early‐stage and mid‐career academics, we find that connections with prominent researchers associate with greater impact. Brokerage positions, in addition, are beneficial to a researcher's research impact in the long run. For senior researchers, however, the only social network feature that significantly affects their future impact is the reputation of their recently built ties. Finally, we build predictive models on future research impact which can be leveraged by both organizations and individuals. This paper provides empirical evidence for how social networks provide signals on researchers' career dynamics guided by social capital theory. Our findings have implications for individual researchers to strategically plan and promote their careers and for research institutions to better evaluate current as well as prospective employees.</p>

The Structure and Evolution of Scientific Collaboration from the Perspective of Symbiosis

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel quantitative metric called the Symbiosis Degree Index for measuring the degree of symbiosis between subjects, which we apply it to analyzing scientific collaboration patterns between researchers. We study the network characteristics of scientific collaboration based on the resultant published research papers indexed in the Web of Science, considering the role of symbiosis. Analyses through our symbiosis metric of the relationship between a pair of mentor and mentee show substantively distinct ramifications from the “old leads young” model. In a sustained collaboration relationship, young researchers do indeed draw support from mentors’ resources to improve their own level of scientific productivity and influence (as predicted in earlier models), but mentors also benefit by increasing their own productivity in publications. The collaborative symbiosis degree between mentor and mentee changes over time as the relationship matures. In the particular case studied here, even though the mentor’s output decreased later in the relationship, their influence (measured through citations) continued to develop at the same pace through these collaborations. This is intended to demonstrate the potential of the metric to produce new insights on the nature of collaboration.

Abstract:Super‐partnerships exist between scholars connected within densely‐knit collaboration networks. Understanding how such relationships affect scholars' careers is of great importance. In this paper, focusing on the longitudinal aspects of scientific collaboration, we analyze collaboration profiles from the egocentric perspective and use analytic extreme value thresholds to identify super‐partners. A total of 5722 pairs of super‐partners are found in the field of economics. The several interesting findings about super‐partners are summarized as follows. (1) The collaboration pattern of super‐partners can be divided into three types: the dual‐core, bridge, and triangle types. (2) Gender disparities are reflected in the collaboration among super‐partners, and the stability of super‐partnerships involving different combinations of genders displays different characteristics. The random‐effect model is constructed to explore the effect of a super‐partnership on both parties from the aspects of productivity and influence, which also shows gender disparities. (3) A super‐partnership contributes to above‐average productivity and citation impacts of the publication for three collaboration patterns, and the research improvement of the triangle type is the greatest among the three types. Overall, this paper explores the characteristics of super‐partners and the added value of a long‐term commitment, which provides quantitative insights into the effect on scientific collaboration associated with close collaboration.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This paper explores how the patterns of collaboration change throughout a scientist's career, especially their collaboration with so‐called “giants”—well‐known elite scholars with very high scientific impact. We divide scientist's careers into five stages based on the number of years since obtaining their PhD, and for each stage, we calculate a number of indicators, such as publication count, normalized citation count, count of collaborations, count of collaborations with “giants,” and percentage of uninterrupted and continuous presence. Our analysis shows that although collaborating with “giants” may benefit a young scholar, they are more likely to achieve greater scientific success if they first work independently and only collaborate with “giants” later in their career. Meanwhile, high‐impact authors tend to work with “giants” early in their career, but not in the later stages, which forces us to reconsider the established notions of when is best to collaborate with elite scholars. Moreover, we find that high‐impact authors tend to have fewer co‐authors per article, regardless of the stage of their careers, indicating that collaboration is important, but the size of collaborations also matters.
