Abstract:While traditional port literature uses origin and destination pairs in global shipping networks, recent developments of dry ports in the hinterland, feeder service networks, and heavy foreign trade traffic make the ports in Bohai Bay a unique case in the analysis of inter-port connectivity and competitiveness. Using an integrated port connectivity index to define the above features, the advantages and challenges of individual ports can be assessed in a dynamic interconnected environment. The model can provide unbiased port development strategies for each port to ensure long-term sustainability. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
A Comparative Study of Sea-Going Natural Gas Transport

Abstract:Abstract Rapidly increasing worldwide natural gas demand and tight domestic supplies in many consuming countries suggest that trans-national transportation of gas will rapidly become important. From a technical perspective, the most economically attractive gas transport option depends on a specific project's reserve base, production capacity, and required shipping distance. This paper examines and quantifies how distance, reserves, and gas production rate affect the technology selection and project economics. Sea-going natural gas transport technologies are: liquefied natural gas (LNG), compressed natural gas (CNG), sub sea pipelines (PNG), gas-to-liquids (GTL), gas-to-wire (GTW), or gas-to-solids (GTS). Available data on capital, operating, and shipping costs for proposed, conceptual, and actual gas-transport projects are analyzed. These cost functions are then integrated into an economic model, which is used to determine the economic constraints of a number of theoretical developments that cover a range of gas rates and shipping distances. Given pricing, financing, and escalation assumptions, net present values (NPV) of the four options are generated over a range of daily gas rates and shipping distances. By examining which option delivers the highest NPV some conclusions are reached: Pipeline and CNG projects are best suited to maximize returns for shorter distances (e.g., 1,000-2,000 km); LNG is better suited for long distance projects. We find that meaningful comparisons between CNG and LNG are for relatively small volumes of gas, i.e., less than 500-600 MMscf/d. For large quantities and for any reasonable distances LNG is still by far the best option. For distances >3,000 km, it is necessary to have at least a >500-600 MMscf/d gas stream available for 20-30 years; this translates to a requirement of a reserve base on the order of 5-10 TCF to supply these long haul projects. For CNG much smaller reserve bases are attractive.

Abstract:As the demand for sustainable energy sources is increasing globally, the popularization and application of clean energy has become an inevitable trend. Natural gas is playing an increasingly vital role in global energy consumption. The vast majority of natural gas is transported between ports in vessels in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG) due to the geographical separation between the supply and demand countries. Analyzing its transportation pattern is of great significance for optimizing trade strategies between countries and ensuring their energy import and export security. However, existing knowledge on detailed trade patterns at the port level is limited. In this study, we adopted a set of network indices and a classic community detection method to investigate global LNG transportation networks using mass vessel trajectory data collected from 2013 to 2017. The results show that 1) the LNG transportation network is characterized by closer connections; 2) Singapore, Ras Laffan, and Khawr Fakkan have the most important roles in the LNG transportation network; 3) the global LNG trade network has developed several closely connected trading communities since 2013, and ports within individual communities have gradually become more geographically concentrated; and 4) the global LNG trade network has evolved into three closely linked trading zones, i.e., a zone encompassing some of the ports in the Middle East, Australia, Singapore, East Asia, and Southeast Asia; a zone encompassing the remaining ports of the Middle East, East Africa, the Mediterranean, and Europe; and the ports in the Americas, which is a relatively independent trade zone.

Abstract:Understanding the long-term evolution of natural gas is critical in the context of long-term energy system transitions. Here, we explicitly represent traded pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure in the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM). We find LNG to make up a dominant share of gas trade, as it can be flexibly shipped across regions. New global investments in LNG and pipeline export infrastructure respectively range from 230 to 840 and 70-620 million tons per annum (MTPA) by 2050 across scenarios; the lower end of this range is achieved through transitioning to low-carbon energy systems along with limited trade. Our results also highlight diverging implications for regions based on their gas trade profiles. For example, Russia, which produces gas largely for pipeline exports may experience greater production losses due to liquefaction and shipping improvements and geopolitical shifts than regions oriented more toward domestic and LNG markets, such as USA and Middle East.

Abstract:The increasing importance of natural gas in ensuring energy security, coupled with the impact of the COVID-19 crisis and the ongoing Russian-Ukraine war, motivates us to highlight the scholarly evolution of the literature on natural gas. From an initial pool of 53,964 papers, we refine our database, analyzing 1006 papers. By combining bibliometric and content analysis, we identify leading journals, countries, institutions, authors, articles, and critical research areas in natural gas. Our findings reveal five main research streams: 1) energy security consumption patterns in the natural gas market; 2) volatility and price discovery of the natural gas market; 3) interconnectedness between natural gas and oil market; 4) supply chain management of natural gas; and 5) development and perception of the natural gas market. We propose research questions to establish directions for future research.

Abstract:This article discusses the development of Eastern Mediterranean natural gas resources in the context of global energy market dynamics. The focal point of this research is to apply Localization Theory through systematic attention on the mutual interaction between geographical proximity, regional relations, energy geopolitics, and economics to investigate the trade of natural gas. Eastern Mediterranean is a geopolitically important region endowed with natural gas resources. The realization of potential development options and achievements of desired results have been stranded by changing regional and global energy market and geopolitical dynamics, different policy approaches, and existing conflicts. In the current energy context, the global energy market structure is altering with the development of unconventional resources, falling demand, abundance in supply, changing pricing structure, and declining global energy infrastructure investments. The study revealed that decisions about the development of natural resources and export infrastructure are dependent on global energy market dynamics in conjunction with regional geopolitics. Regional cooperation and development of energy policies in line with the careful consideration of global energy market dynamics and energy geopolitics are suggested as the main path to shape the future of these processes. The study also revealed that development and monetization of the Eastern Mediterranean natural gas resources necessitate a pragmatic approach based on realistic expectations and the development of all-inclusive cooperative schemes. Joint development of regional natural gas resources under these cooperative schemes is likely to produce desired solutions for the energy development and monetization process and create economies of scale by keeping costs low.

Abstract:Transitioning from coal to natural gas and renewable energy sources has become a global trend over the past decade. Despite efforts made by the EU, USA, Japan, and several other nations to replace fossil fuels with alternative sources, significant success in this domain remains elusive, with hydrocarbons continuing to dominate the energy landscape. Notably, the share of liquefied natural gas (LNG), once perceived as a weak alternative to pipeline gas, constituted 56 % of the global gas exports by the end of 2022, with the number of consumer countries reaching 47. This study aims to assess the potential capabilities of key LNG suppliers in increasing production and export volumes to meet the growing demand in the global LNG market. A primary focus is placed on evaluating the capabilities and plans of Russian companies to execute large-scale LNG projects. The research employs methods of systems and statistical analysis, along with economic forecasting. The article discusses the key trends in the global LNG market's development and identifies the factors exerting the most significant impact on its trajectory. An analysis of the current long-term program supporting LNG production in Russia is conducted, highlighting the key support measures available to domestic companies. The practical significance of this study lies in identifying countries poised to increase their production volumes and enter the LNG production and export arena within six to seven years. The research pinpoints key large-scale domestic LNG projects set to make the Russian LNG share in the world market grow from 8 % to 15–17 %. Subsequent steps of this research will involve assessing the prospects for selling Russian and American LNG in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) market.

Abstract:As the world is smoothing the transition towards a low-carbon energy structure, natural gas has occupied a critical position in global energy supply. Also, globalization has catalyzed ever-increasing indirect energy flows in international trade. In order to present a comprehensive overview of natural gas use in globalized economy, this paper applies the systems multi-regional input-output (MRIO) analysis to track natural gas use from primary suppliers to final consumers via the links by producers in the world economy, supported by typical statistics for the year of 2011. Natural gas embodied in international trade is revealed amounting to 2722.1 bcm, in magnitude up to 90% of total gas extraction for energy use, indicating the intensive relocation of gas use by trade. 83% of traded embodied natural gas is associated with intermediate trade, mainly from leading primary suppliers, including Russia, USA and Western Asia, to dominant final consumers, like USA, EU27 and East Asia. Significant differences are found between direct and embodied natural gas flows. Consumption-based resource efficiency can break the illusion of efficiency improvements, and trade imbalance in terms of gas use can be opposite to the trade imbalance in conventional monetary terms. This paper has constructed a comprehensive analytical framework to trace natural gas flows in globalized economy for the first time, aiming to provide new insights for policy making.

Abstract:In 2010 LNG’s increasing share of global gas trade has accelerated globalization of the natural gas market, and European and Asian LNG demand has significantly increased amid sluggish US demand.Despite the residual financial crisis,global LNG trade will continue growing in 2011 with overall recovery of the world economy.Global LNG production capacity entered a golden age of growth in 2010,leading to a relative glut in LNG supply.And relative excess in supply will continue into 2011.Relative to the US and Europe,Asia still paid a significant LNG price premium in 2010.The LNG price is presently rising gradually in Europe in tandem with economic recovery,while the LNG price remains low in the US because of the impact of unconventional natural gas.LNG prices in Europe and Asia will rise further together in 2011.Some recommendations for the rapid development of China's LNG industry are: adapt long-term national LNG development strategies and plans,speed up construction of LNG terminals and storage facilities,increase LNG import volume,and expedite development of a natural gas and LNG pricing mechanism.

Abstract:Abstract The transition to clean and low-carbon energy is an irresistible trend globally that drives the scale of trade in the global LNG market to grow continuously. The paper reviews the global LNG trade in 2020 and forecasts the future LNG supply and demand. On this basis, the costs in segments of a LNG project are analysed from the perspective of the LNG industry chain. The feasibility of export from LNG projects and the preferred target markets are determined by calculating the economic index of projects. It is concluded that the possibility of future rebound in oil prices and the demand growth in the incremental market in emerging Asian countries are most likely to determine the capacity scales of new LNG projects around the world and contribute to a dynamic balance in the LNG market in the medium- and longterm. The costs in different segments of the LNG industry chain vary greatly with the availability of resources and markets. The economics of LNG export depend on the demand for LNG imports in end markets, the cost plus in different segments of the industrial chain, and the affordability of end consumers. Through the cost and economic analysis on typical LNG Projects, Qatar is found still the most economical and highly profitable country in the global LNG export market nowadays. Unsatisfactory economic performance is a common reason for delayed investments in many large LNG projects in Australia and other countries.

Abstract:The current state of the global natural gas market, as well as regional aspects of gas production and consumption, are analyzed. Forecasts of the long-term development of the global market are presented, with a special focus on the countries of East and South Asia, where, according to long-term forecasts, gas demand will double by 2050, to 1092.6 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe). The environmental benefits of natural gas will support, but not determine, its role in certain markets, because the prospects for using gas in the power industry are determined primarily by its price. By 2050, China is expected to increase its consumption by almost 350 billion cubic meters (bcm) to 661 bcm, more than the countries of the European Union and the Middle East use today. The decisions already taken by the Chinese authorities will play a huge role in shaping global trends and may become a catalyst for the transition to "clean" energy. The scale of China's renewable energy deployment and export of these technologies implies a low-carbon development path for the country. During periods of economic slowdown, the imbalance of supply and demand in the global hydrocarbon market leads to its destabilization. To predict such situations in advance, experts analyze the evolution of energy markets, considering the consequences for Russia in their forecasts. However, almost all experts are not ready to specify the period in the foreseeable future of peak gas demand even for the world's largest economies (except for the European Union and the developed countries of Asia).

Abstract:As an extension of our previous study on natural gas use in world economy (Kan et al., Energy Policy 124 (2019) 215–225), this paper explores policy implications based on a time series analysis uncovering the evolution of natural gas use embodied in global supply chains during 2000-2011. Due to increasing gas supply from gas-rich regions to gas-scarce regions and outsourcing of energy-intensive industries, trade imbalance of embodied natural gas is intensifying globally, corresponding to strengthening gas resource relocation and environmental stress shift. Regarding trade patterns, EU and Russia remain the leading (net) importer and exporter of embodied gas, respectively. And global trade relations are diversifying over time, with more suppliers and recipients joining the international trade. Based on the New Policies Scenario provided by IEA, a long term forecast of embodied gas use illustrates need to prepare for a world with changing energy mix, with respect to growing availability of low-cost natural gas and robust demand growth coming from emerging economies, especially China, who is struggling to fight against air pollution through coal-to-gas switch. Potential room to expand natural gas utilization is also targeted, and the expansion requires coordination of all the agents in global supply chains.

Abstract:The importance of natural gas as an energy source is increasing. Natural gas has traditionally been transported in pipelines, but ships are more efficient for transportation over long distances. When the gas is cooled down to liquid state it is called liquefied natural gas (LNG). The LNG supply chain consists of exploration, extraction, liquefaction, transportation, storage and regasification. Maritime transportation is a vital part of the LNG supply chain, and LNG is transported in special designed ships, LNG tankers. The demand for LNG tankers has increased considerably as the entire LNG industry continues to see strong growth. Hence, there is a great potential and need for optimization based decision support to manage the LNG fleet, liquefaction plants, and regasification terminals in this business.Here, we are studying the LNG supply chain in close cooperation with a worldwide actor within the LNG business. This actor is responsible for the LNG supply chain management except the exploration and extraction.We describe the real planning problem and present both an arc-flow and a path-flow model of the problem. Both models are tested and compared on instances motivated from the realworld problem. It is a very complex problem, so only small instances can be solved to optimality by these solution approaches.

Potential impact of the shift in Russia-EU gas relations on international LNG trade

Abstract:After the Ukraine issue, Europe quickly proposed a long-term strategy to get rid of its dependence on Russian gas and developing corresponding measures. In 2022, Europe’s pipeline gas imports from Russia dropped significantly and were instead compensated by imported LNG, aggravating the tight balance of international LNG supply and demand. With limited incremental global LNG supply, Europe can only use high prices to attract LNG that would otherwise flow to Asia to Europe,and the competition between the two leads to higher global gas prices, while creating a whole new pattern of international LNG trade. Goods contested by Europe and Asia at the same time will become the anchor of global LNG prices. The global natural gas market will remain “high priced and volatile” in the coming years. In order to ensure the healthy development of China’s natural gas industry, it is recommended to accelerate the rate of increasing domestic natural gas production, speed up the construction of imported natural gas pipelines and storages, promote the listing of LNG futures and the transformation of the natural gas industry into a digital intelligence, and enhance the overall strength of China’s natural gas industry to meet future market challenges.
Trends in the development of the global liquefied natural gas market and prospects for the implementation of Russian Arctic projects

Abstract:The environmental agenda, as well as issues of reducing carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, are currently treated as a global trend. In such conditions, developed countries openly and actively declare their plans to switch from coal to natural gas and renewable energy sources in their energy consumption. At the same time, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market is developing at such a pace that in 10–15 years, according to experts, it will bypass the pipeline market. Nevertheless, a significant increase in prices for “blue fuel” at the end of 2021 and the first half of 2022 called into question the reality of following the chosen course in the near future. The study identified the main LNG importers by the end of 2021 (China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and India), as well as the key exporters (Australia, Qatar, USA, Russia, Nigeria, Algeria, Malaysia, Oman and Indonesia). The analysis showed that in the medium term, Qatar, the United States and Russia will be able to significantly increase the volume of natural gas and LNG production. Australia, despite its status as the largest exporter of LNG by the end of 2021, due to the shortage of natural gas in the domestic market, will not be able to increase export volumes in the near future. The purpose of the study is to analyze the main trends in the development of the global LNG market in new geopolitical conditions and to determine the prospects for the implementation of Russian Arctic LNG projects. The scientific novelty of the work lies in determining the potential of the largest LNG suppliers in terms of increasing the LNG production and export regarding the forthcoming 5–8 years. The next stage of the work will be the assessment of the prospects for the sale of Russian and American LNG in the European Union and the Asia-Pacific region markets.

Abstract:Italy has been defined as the "logistics platform" of the Mediterranean Sea. The Italian port system, with 11.6 million TEUs handled and 61.4 million passengers in 2022 (Assoporti data January–December 2022), is the key to fulfilling this title through adequate levels of reliability, safety, and sustainability. This contribution addresses port logistics and shipping, focusing on primary issues related to the energy sector with a specific focus on what can be observed in the Italian context. Specifically, the decarbonization of the maritime sector and related infrastructural problems (e.g., cold ironing or alternative fuels, where the uncertainty about resource availability and related costs do not allow for easy strategic planning by both the ship owner and the port authority), as well as policies such as the Emission Trading System (ETS), will be analyzed. All these issues, hereafter addressed with a systematic critical review of the existing literature and other relevant sources, could represent the driving force of the growth of the national port sector toward its competitiveness at a global scale. The review was performed through a wide search and analysis of studies published in well-known online research databases (Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect), sector studies, or specialized technical magazines. The review focuses on the results of each analyzed contribution rather than on the analysis method adopted with the final aim to identify useful hints and innovative ideas for further studies on the topic.

GNOME: A Dynamic Dispatch and Investment Optimisation Model of the European Natural Gas Network and Its Suppliers

Abstract:A bstract As indigenous production declines, the European gas market is becoming increasingly dependent on imports. This poses energy security questions for a number of countries, particularly in the north-east of Europe. A suite of mathematical models of the European natural gas network has been borne from these concerns and has traditionally been used to assess supply disruption scenarios. The literature reveals that most existing European gas network models are insufficiently specified to analyse changes in supply and demand dynamics, appraise proposed infrastructure investments, and assess the impacts of supply disruption scenarios over a range of time horizons. Furthermore, those that are suited to these applications are typically proprietary and therefore publicly unavailable. This offers an opportunity to present a new model. The Gas Network Optimisation Model for Europe (GNOME) is a dynamic, highly granular mixed-integer linear optimisation model of the European natural gas network and its exogenous suppliers. GNOME represents demand and supply for all EU-27 Member States except Cyprus, Luxembourg, and Malta. The UK, Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Ukraine, and Turkey are also included. Russia, the Southern Corridor suppliers, Qatar, North Africa, Nigeria, and the Americas are modelled as supply-only regions. GNOME satisfies gas demand in each country by generating a cost-minimal mix of indigenous gas production, pipeline flows, LNG imports, and storage use. If demand cannot be met using existing infrastructure, GNOME will generate a cost-optimal investment strategy of pipeline, LNG regasification, and gas storage capacity additions. The model solves on a monthly basis, from 2025 to 2040, in 5-year steps. The capabilities of GNOME are demonstrated by tasking it to analyse the impacts of a failure to complete the upcoming Nord Stream 2 pipeline between Russia and Germany. The complete formulation of GNOME including input files, equations, and source code is provided.

The trade of liquefied natural gas (LNG) serves as the backbone of the global natural gas trade and significantly influences the dynamics of the global energy trade system. This paper constructs long-term global LNG trade networks, and explores the spatiotemporal evolution and topological structures of the international LNG trade by utilizing multilevel network analysis methods, to provide insights for comprehensively understanding the market dynamics of the global LNG trade system. The findings indicate the following: (1) The global LNG trade volume shows an overall upward trend, and the global LNG trade network exhibits uneven spatial distribution, clear hierarchical differentiation, and an increasingly complicated structure. Global LNG trade is gradually changing from regionalization to globalization, and the international LNG market is undergoing structural reshaping. (2) The global LNG trade network continues to expand in size and density, and the rapidly growing LNG supply and trade relations are driving the formation of the global natural gas market. (3) Global LNG trade is still in a phase of rapid change, with the global efficiency of the network increasing and then decreasing. The trade network has traditionally been centered on ten countries, including Japan, South Korea, the United States, and Qatar. (4) The global LNG trade network exhibits clear core-periphery structures with considerable polarization effects, and the trade network structure is continuously evolving and is growing unbalanced. Finally, we put forward relevant policy suggestions to promote global LNG trade interconnectivity and enhance environmental protection and respond to global climate change.

Geospatial Life Cycle Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from US Liquefied Natural Gas Supply Chains

Abstract:Growth in US liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports have increased concerns about the climate impacts of methane leakage along LNG supply chains. Current life cycle analysis (LCA) models of US LNG supply chains are based on emissions estimates in national inventories that have been demonstrated to significantly underestimate emissions. In addition, recent top-down measurements of methane emissions exhibit significant sub-national spatial and temporal variation across oil and gas (O&G) basins. In this study, we develop a geospatial, measurement informed LCA model that incorporates recent top-down methane measurements to examine regional differences in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity of US LNG supply chains for delivery to Europe and Asia. For every megajoule of LNG shipped from the US, the energy allocated GHG emissions intensity of the Permian-UK LNG supply chain is 42% higher compared to the Marcellus-UK LNG supply chain. Disparities in LNG emissions intensity across source basins can be directly attributed to higher measured methane emissions compared to inventory estimates. Developing measurement informed, supply-chain specific lifecycle GHG emissions assessments is critical to enabling a global market for differentiated natural gas.
