Abstract:We consider a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-like model in the inflationary background. We show that with an axial chemical potential, the attractive quartic fermion self-interaction can lead to a BCS-like condensation. In the rigid-de Sitter (dS) limit of inflation where backreaction from the inflaton and graviton is neglected, we perform the first computation of the non-perturbative effective potential that includes the full spacetime curvature effects in the presence of the chemical potential, subject to the mean-field approximation whose validity has been checked via the Ginzburg criterion. The corresponding BCS phase transition is always first-order, when the varying Hubble is interpreted as an effective Gibbons-Hawking temperature of dS spacetime. In the condensed phase, the theory can be understood from UV and IR sides as fermionic and bosonic, respectively. This leads to distinctive signatures in the primordial non-Gaussianity of curvature perturbations. Namely, the oscillatory cosmological collider signal is smoothly turned off at a finite momentum ratio, since different momentum ratios effectively probe different energy scales. In addition, such BCS phase transitions can also source stochastic gravitational waves, which are feasible for future experiments.

Abstract:The simplest single-field inflation models capture all the relevant contributions to the patterns in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observed today. A key assumption in these models is that the quantum inflationary fluctuations that source such patterns are generated by a particular quantum state -- the Bunch-Davies (BD) state. While this is a well-motivated choice from a theoretical perspective, the question arises of whether current data can rule out other, also well motivated, choices of states. In particular, as we previously demonstrated in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2104.13410" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2104.13410">arXiv:2104.13410</a> [hep-th], entanglement is naturally and inevitably dynamically generated during inflation given the presence of a "rolling" spectator scalar field -- and the resulting entangled state will yield a primordial power spectrum with potentially measurable deviations compared to the canonical BD result. For this work we developed a perturbative framework to allow a systematic exploration of constraints on (or detection of) entangled states with Planck CMB data using Monte Carlo techniques. We have found that most entangled states accessible with our framework are consistent with the data. One would have to expand the framework to allow a greater variety of entangled states in order to saturate the Planck constraints and more systematically explore any preferences the data may have among the different possibilities.

Abstract:The interplay between cosmology and strongly coupled dynamics can yield transient spectral features that vanish at late times, but which may leave behind phenomenological signatures in the spectrum of primordial fluctuations. Of particular interest are strongly coupled extensions of the standard model featuring approximate conformal invariance. In flat space, the spectral density for a scalar operator in a conformal field theory is characterized by a continuum with scaling law governed by the dimension of the operator, and is otherwise featureless. AdS/CFT arguments suggest that for large $N$, in an inflationary background with Hubble rate $H$, this continuum is gapped. We demonstrate that there can be additional peak structures that become sharp and particle-like at phenomenologically interesting regions in parameter space, and we estimate their contribution to cosmological observables. We find phenomena that are potentially observable in future experiments that are unique to these models, including displaced oscillatory features in the squeezed limit of the bi-spectrum. These particles can be either fundamental, and localized to a UV brane, or composite at the Hubble scale, $H$, and bound to a horizon in the bulk of the 5D geometry. We comment on how stabilization of conformal symmetry breaking vacua can be correlated with these spectral features and their phenomenology.

The Affleck-Dine Curvaton

Abstract:The Standard Model of particle physics does not explain the origin of the universe's baryon asymmetry or its primordial fluctuations. The Affleck-Dine mechanism is a well-motivated scenario for generating the baryon asymmetry through the post-inflationary dynamics of a complex scalar field with baryon number. The curvaton mechanism is a popular approach for producing curvature perturbations through the dynamics of a light spectator field which decays after inflation. We demonstrate that the same complex field can viably perform both roles without any modifications to the minimal realization of Affleck-Dine baryogenesis. This scenario can also accommodate appreciable levels of primordial non-Gaussianity, beyond those achievable with only a real-valued curvaton field, and may be observable with future CMB experiments.

Abstract:The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) provides a precious window on fundamental physics at very high energy scales, possibly including quantum gravity, GUTs and supersymmetry. The CMB has already enabled defect-based rivals to inflation to be discarded, and will be able to falsify many inflationary models. In combination with other cosmological observations, including those of high-redshift supernovae and large-scale structure, the CMB is on the way to providing a detailed budget for the density of the Universe, to be compared with particle-physics calculations for neutrinos and cold dark matter. Thus CMB measurements complement experiments with the LHC and long-baseline neutrino beams.

Abstract:This contribution is an appetizer to the relatively young and fast-evolving approach to quantum cosmology based on group field theory condensate states. We summarize the main assumptions and pillars of this approach which has revealed new perspectives on the long-standing question of how to recover the continuum from discrete geometric building blocks. Among others, we give a snapshot of recent work on isotropic cosmological solutions exhibiting an accelerated expansion, a bounce where anisotropies are shown to be under control, and inhomogeneities with an approximately scale-invariant power spectrum. Finally, we point to open issues in the condensate cosmology approach.

Abstract:We investigate the entanglement due to geometric corrections in particle creation during inflation. To do so, we propose a single-field inflationary scenario, nonminimally coupled to the scalar curvature of spacetime. We require particle production to be purely geometric, setting to zero the Bogolubov coefficients and computing the $S$ matrix associated to spacetime perturbations, which are traced back to inflaton fluctuations. The corresponding particle density leads to a nonzero entanglement entropy whose effects are investigated at primordial time of Universe evolution. The possibility of modeling our particle candidate in terms of dark matter is discussed. The classical back-reaction of inhomogeneities on the homogeneous dynamical background degrees of freedom is also studied and quantified in the slow-roll regime.

Interacting Dirac fields in an expanding universe: dynamical condensates and particle production

Abstract:The phenomenon of particle production for quantum field theories in curved spacetimes is crucial to understand the large-scale structure of a universe from an inflationary epoch. In contrast to the free and fixed-background case, the production of particles with strong interactions and back reaction is not completely understood, especially in situations that require going beyond perturbation theory. In this work, we present advances in this direction by focusing on a self-interacting field theory of Dirac fermions in an expanding Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. By using a Hamiltonian lattice regularization with continuous conformal time and rescaled fields, this model becomes amenable to either a cold-atom analogue-gravity quantum simulation, or a dynamical variational approach. Leveraging a family of variational fermionic Gaussian states, we investigate how dynamical mass generation and the formation of fermion condensates associated to certain broken symmetries modify some well-known results of the free field theory. In particular, we study how the non-perturbative condensates arise and, more importantly, how their real-time evolution has an impact on particle production. Depending on the Hubble expansion rate, we find an interesting interplay of interactions and particle production, including a non-trivial back reaction on the condensates and a parity-breaking spectrum of produced particles.

Abstract:We describe the implications of cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations and galaxy and cluster surveys of large scale structure (LSS) for theories of cosmic structure formation, especially emphasizing the recent Boomerang and Maxima CMB balloon experiments. The inflation-based cosmic structure formation paradigm we have been operating with for two decades has never been in better shape. Here we primarily focus on a simplified inflation parameter set, {omega_b,omega_{cdm},Omega_{tot}, Omega_\Lambda,n_s,\tau_C, \sigma_8}. Combining all of the current CMB+LSS data points to the remarkable conclusion that the local Hubble patch we can access has little mean curvature (Omega_{tot}=1.08\pm 0.06) and the initial fluctuations were nearly scale invariant (n_s=1.03\pm 0.08), both predictions of (non-baroque) inflation theory. The baryon density is found to be slightly larger than that preferred by independent Big Bang Nucleosynthesis estimates (omega_b=0.030\pm 0.005 cf. 0.019\pm 0.002). The CDM density is in the expected range (omega_{cdm}=0.17 \pm 0.02). Even stranger is the CMB+LSS evidence that the density of the universe is dominated by unclustered energy akin to the cosmological constant (Omega_\Lambda=0.66\pm 0.06), at the same level as that inferred from high redshift supernova observations. We also sketch the CMB+LSS implications for massive neutrinos.

A Cosmological Tachyon Collider: Enhancing the Long-Short Scale Coupling

Abstract:The squeezed limit of the primordial curvature bispectrum is an extremely sensitive probe of new physics and encodes information about additional fields active during inflation such as their masses and spins. In the conventional setup, additional fields are stable with a positive mass squared, and hence induce a decreasing signal in the squeezed limit, making a detection challenging. Here we consider a scalar field that is temporarily unstable by virtue of a transient tachyonic mass, and we construct models in which it is embedded consistently within inflation. Assuming IR-finite couplings between the tachyon and the inflaton, we find an exchange bispectrum with an enhanced long-short scale coupling that grows in the squeezed limit parametrically faster than local non-Gaussianity. Our approximately scale-invariant signal can be thought of as a cosmological tachyon collider. In a sizeable region of parameter space, the leading constraint on our signal comes from the cross correlation of $\mu$-type spectral distortions and temperature anisotropies of the microwave background, whereas temperature and polarization bispectra are less sensitive probes. By including anisotropic spectral distortions in the analysis, future experiments such as CMB-S4 will further reduce the allowed parameter space.

Magnetic Fields from Compensated Isocurvature Perturbations

Abstract:Compensated isocurvature perturbations (CIPs) are perturbations to the primordial baryon density that are accompanied by dark-matter-density perturbations so that the total matter density is unperturbed. Such CIPs, which may arise in some multi-field inflationary models, can be long-lived and only weakly constrained by current cosmological measurements. Here we show that the CIP-induced modulation of the electron number density interacts with the electron-temperature fluctuation associated with primordial adiabatic perturbations to produce, via the Biermann-battery mechanism, a magnetic field in the post-recombinaton Universe. Assuming the CIP amplitude saturates the current BBN bounds, this magnetic field can be stronger than $10^{-15}\,\mathrm{nG}$ at $z\simeq20$ and stronger by an order of magnitude than that (produced at second order in the adiabatic-perturbation amplitude) in the standard cosmological model, and thus can serve as a possible seed for galactic dynamos.

Shapes of the Cosmological Low-Speed Collider

Abstract:Massive particles produced during inflation leave specific signatures in soft limits of correlation functions of primordial fluctuations. When the Goldstone boson of broken time translations acquires a reduced speed of sound, implying that de Sitter boosts are strongly broken, we introduce a novel discovery channel to detect new physics during inflation, called the cosmological low-speed collider signal. This signal is characterised by a distinctive resonance lying in mildly-soft kinematic configurations of cosmological correlators, indicating the presence of a heavy particle, whose position enables to reconstruct its mass. We show that this resonance can be understood in terms of a non-local single field effective field theory, in which the heavy field becomes effectively non-dynamical. This theory accurately describes the full dynamics of the Goldstone boson and captures all multi-field physical effects distinct from the non-perturbative particle production leading to the conventional cosmological collider signal. As such, this theory provides a systematic and tractable way to study the imprint of massive fields on cosmological correlators. We conduct a thorough study of the low-speed collider phenomenology in the scalar bispectrum, showing that large non-Gaussianities with new shapes can be generated, in particular beyond weak mixing. We also provide a low-speed collider template for future cosmological surveys.

An Entangled Universe

Abstract:We propose a possible quantum signature of the early Universe that could lead to observational imprints of the quantum nature of the inflationary period. Graviton production in the presence of an inflaton scalar field results in entangled states in polarization. This is because of a non-trivial effect due to the derivatives on two scalar fluctuations and it provides a fingerprint that depends on the polarization of the graviton that Alice and/or Bob measured in their patch. At horizon crossing, interactions between the gravitons and inflatons perform the required Bell experiments leading to a definitive measure. We hint how this signature could be measure in the high-order correlation function of galaxies, in particular on the halo bias and the intrinsic alignment.

Anisotropic Inflation in Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates

Abstract:Early during the era of cosmic inflation, rotational invariance may have been broken, only later emerging as a feature of low-energy physics. This motivates ongoing searches for residual signatures of anisotropic space-time, for example in the power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background. We propose that dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) furnish a laboratory quantum simulation platform for the anisotropy evolution of fluctuation spectra during inflation, exploiting the fact that the speed of dipolar condensate sound waves depends on direction. We construct the anisotropic analogue space-time metric governing sound, by linking the time-varying strength of dipolar and contact interactions in the BEC to the scale factors in different coordinate directions. Based on these, we calculate the dynamics of phonon power spectra during an inflation that renders the initially anisotropic universe isotropic. We find that the expansion speed provides an experimental handle to control and study the degree of final residual anisotropy. Gravity analogues using dipolar condensates can thus provide tuneable experiments for a field of cosmology that was until now confined to a single experiment, our universe.

Abstract:We approach the problem of finding generalized states for matter fields in a de Sitter universe, moving from a group theoretical point of view. This has profound consequences for cosmological perturbations during inflation, and for other CMB observables. In a systematic derivation, we find all the allowed generalities that such a state may have, within the requirements of coherent states. Furthermore, we show their relation to the more familiar excited initial states, often used in inflation.

The Conformal Universe III: Basic Mechanisms of Matter Generation

Abstract:This is the last of three papers on Conformal General Relativity (CGR), which ascribes inflation to a spontaneous breakdown of conformal symmetry, followed by a sudden energy transfer from geometry to matter identified as big bang. This process is driven by a conformal-invariant, unitarity-preserving interaction of two Nambu-Goldstone fields: a ghost scalar field $\sigma$, invested with geometric meaning, and a physical scalar field $\varphi$ behaving like a Higgs field of varying mass. The big bang generates a bulk of Higgs bosons at temperature $T_B\simeq 141$ GeV, after which the universe evolves adiabatically while the Higgs bosons decay into Standard-Model particles and the magnitude of the gravitational coupling constant decreases. The process ends when the $\sigma$-$\varphi$ interaction potential vanishes, the amplitudes of these fields converge to their expectation values in a final stable vacuum and the Higgs-boson mass converges to about 126 GeV. The main aspects of this phenomenology are qualitatively described and accurately exemplified by numerical simulations. The combination of CGR gravitational equation at time zero with entropy conservation equation results in striking predictions. The best fit to astronomic data is obtained from only standard Higgs boson parameters and a universe age of 19.5 Gyr. The cosmological constant $\Lambda\simeq 1.35\times 10^{-35}$s$^{-2}$, the scale factor across inflation $Z\simeq 4.54\times 10^{27}$, and the lower bound of the power spectrum of cosmic background anisotropies $W_{min}\!\simeq 37.5\,\mu$K$^2$ are thus predicted.

Abstract:We present a theoretical study of the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped inside an expanding toroid that can realize an analogue inflationary universe. As the system expands, we find that phonons in the BEC undergo redshift and damping due to quantum pressure effects, owing to the thinness of the ring. We predict that rapidly expanding toroidal BEC's can exhibit spontaneous particle creation, and study this phenomenon in the context of an initial coherent state wavefunction. We show how particle creation would be revealed in the atom density and density correlations, and discuss connections to the cosmological theory of inflation.

Abstract:We investigate the geometric dynamics of the primordial electric and magnetic fields during the early stages of the universe by extending a recently introduced quantum algebra \cite{BMM,BMAS}. We work on an extended model of gravity that considers the boundary terms from the Einstein-Hilbert action as geometric quantum fluctuations of the spacetime. We propose that the extended Riemann manifold is generated by a new connection ${\hat{\delta\Gamma}}^{\mu}_{\alpha\beta}$. This connection contains geometric information about the fluctuations of gravitational and electromagnetic fields in the vacuum, which could have been crucial during the primordial stages of the universe's evolution. We revisit a preinflationary cosmological model \cite{mb} with a variable time scale and negative spatial curvature, such that the universe begins with a null initial background energy density. We observed the emergence of large scale magnetic fields starting from small values during the early phases of the universe's evolution. Subsequently, these fields decrease to reach present day values on the order of $\left<\hat{\delta B}\right> \simeq 10^{-12}\,{\rm G}$ on cosmological scales (between $10^{24}$ and $10^{26}$ meters). This significant deviation from inflationary models eliminates the need to impose excessively large initial values on these fields.
