Abstract:A characterization of unconditional convergent series is given for the case of sequentially complete locally convex spaces. From it we show that if E is a barrelled space with continuous dual E', then (E', beta(E', E)) contains no copy of (c(0), parallel to.parallel to(infinity)) if and only if every continuous linear operator T : E --> l(1) is both compact and sequentially compact.

Abstract:Abstract Let be a subset of a Hilbert space. We prove that if is such that for all and all non‐negative that add up to one, then for any 1‐Lipschitz , with , there exists a 1‐Lipschitz extension of such that the uniform distance on between and is the same as the uniform distance on between and . Moreover, if either or is convex, we prove the converse: We show that a map that allows for a 1‐Lipschitz, uniform distance preserving extension of any 1‐Lipschitz map on a subset of also satisfies the above set of inequalities. We also prove a similar continuity result concerning extensions of monotone maps. Our results hold true also for maps taking values in infinite‐dimensional spaces.

Abstract:Using the notion of modulus of continuity at a point of a mapping between metric spaces, we introduce the notion of extensively bounded mappings generalizing that of Lipschitz mappings. We also introduce a metric on it which becomes a norm if the codomain is a normed linear space. We study its basic properties. We also discuss a dilation of an extensively bounded mapping into a Lipschitz mapping as well as into a bounded linear mapping.

Abstract:The Lipschitz-free space has an F.D.D. when M is a separable -Banach space, or when is a somewhat regular subset. The interplay between the existence of extension operators for Lipschitz maps and the -property in Lipschitz-free spaces is investigated. If M is an arbitrary metric space, then has the -property up to a universal logarithmic factor. It follows in particular that the -property up to a logarithmic factor fails to imply the approximation property. A list of commented open problems is provided.

Abstract:We study the existence of continuous (linear) operators from the Banach spaces $\mbox{Lip}_0(M)$ of Lipschitz functions on infinite metric spaces $M$ vanishing at a distinguished point and from their predual spaces $\mathcal{F}(M)$ onto certain Banach spaces, including $C(K)$-spaces and the spaces $c_0$ and $\ell_1$. For pairs of spaces $\mbox{Lip}_0(M)$ and $C(K)$ we prove that if they are endowed with topologies weaker than the norm topology, then usually no continuous (linear or not) surjection exists between those spaces. It is also showed that if a metric space $M$ contains a bilipschitz copy of the unit sphere $S_{c_0}$ of the space $c_0$, then $\mbox{Lip}_0(M)$ admits a continuous operator onto $\ell_1$ and hence onto $c_0$. Using this, we provide several conditions for a space $M$ implying that $\mbox{Lip}_0(M)$ is not a Grothendieck space. Finally, we obtain a new characterization of the Schur property for Lipschitz-free spaces: a space $\mathcal{F}(M)$ has the Schur property if and only if for every discrete metric space $N$ with cardinality $d(M)$ the spaces $\mathcal{F}(M)$ and $\mathcal{F}(N)$ are weakly sequentially homeomorphic.

Abstract:For a metric space $(K,d)$ the Banach space $\Lip(K)$ consists of all scalar-valued bounded Lipschitz functions on $K$ with the norm $\|f\|_{L}=\max(\|f\|_{\infty},L(f))$, where $L(f)$ is the Lipschitz constant of $f$. The closed subspace $\lip(K)$ of $\Lip(K)$ contains all elements of $\Lip(K)$ satisfying the $\lip$-condition $\lim_{0<d(x,y)\to 0}|f(x)-f(y)|/d(x,y)=0$. For $K=([0,1],| {\cdot} |^{\alpha})$, $0<\alpha<1$, we prove that $\lip(K)$ is a proper $M$-ideal in a certain subspace of $\Lip(K)$ containing a copy of $\ell^{\infty}$.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a closed subset of a complete Riemannian manifold $M$ of dimension $\geq 2$, let $f: M \to N$ be a Lipschitz map to a complete Riemannian manifold $N$, and let $\psi$ be a continuous function which dominates the local Lipschitz constant of $f$. We construct a Lipschitz map which agress with $f$ on $\Gamma$ and whose local Lipschitz constant is $\psi$.

Extension of Lipschitz Functions Revisited

Abstract:The classical McShane-Whitney extension theorem for Lipschitz functions is refined by showing that for a closed subset of the domain, it remains valid for any interval of the real line. This result is also extended to the setting of locally (pointwise) Lipschitz functions. In contrast to Lipschitz and pointwise Lipschitz extensions, the construction of locally Lipschitz extensions is based on Lipschitz partitions of unity of countable open covers of the domain. Such partitions of unity are a special case of a more general result obtained by Zdeněk Frol\'ık. To avoid the use of Stone's theorem (paracompactness of metrizable spaces), it is given a simple direct proof of this special case of Frol\'ık's result. As an application, it is shown that the locally Lipschitz functions are precisely the locally finite sums of sequences of Lipschitz functions. Also, it is obtained a natural locally Lipschitz version of one of Michael's selection theorems.

Abstract:Let $T$ be a compact, metrisable and strongly countable-dimensional topological space. Let $\mathcal{M}^T$ be the set of all metrics $d$ on $T$ compatible with its topology, and equip $\mathcal{M}^T$ with the topology of uniform convergence, where the metrics are regarded as functions on $T^2$. We prove that the set $\mathcal{A}^{T,1}$ of metrics $d\in\mathcal{M}^T$ for which the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal{F}(T,d)$ has the metric approximation property is residual in $\mathcal{M}^T$.

Abstract:We exhibit an obstruction for groups with Property (T) to act on the real line by bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms. This condition is expressed in terms of the Lipschitz constants and the Kazhdan constants associated to finite, generating subsets. As a corollary, we obtain an upper bound for the Kazhdan constants of orderable groups. Our main tool is the Koopman representation associated to the action $\operatorname{BiLip}_+(\mathbb{R})\curvearrowright\mathbb{R}$.

Monotonic Extensions of Lipschitz Maps

Abstract:We study the problem of extending an order-preserving real-valued Lipschitz map defined on a subset of a partially ordered metric space without increasing its Lipschitz constant and preserving its monotonicity. We show that a certain type of relation between the metric and order of the space, which we call radiality, is necessary and sufficient for such an extension to exist. Radiality is automatically satisfied by the equality relation, so the classical McShane-Whitney extension theorem is a special case of our main characterization result. As applications, we obtain a similar generalization of McShane's uniformly continuous extension theorem, along with some functional representation results for radial partial orders.

Abstract:Let $K=2^\mathbb{N}$ be the Cantor set, let $\mathcal{M}$ be the set of all metrics $d$ on $K$ that give its usual (product) topology, and equip $\mathcal{M}$ with the topology of uniform convergence, where the metrics are regarded as functions on $K^2$. We prove that the set of metrics $d\in\mathcal{M}$ for which the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal{F}(K,d)$ has the metric approximation property is a residual $F_{\sigma\delta}$ set in $\mathcal{M}$, and that the set of metrics $d\in\mathcal{M}$ for which $\mathcal{F}(K,d)$ fails the approximation property is a dense meager set in $\mathcal{M}$. This answers a question posed by G. Godefroy.

Abstract:We generalize a bi-Lipschitz extension result of David and Semmes from Euclidean spaces to complete metric measure spaces with controlled geometry (Ahlfors regularity and supporting a Poincaré inequality). In particular, we find sharp conditions on metric measure spaces $X$ so that any bi-Lipschitz embedding of a subset of the real line into $X$ extends to a bi-Lipschitz embedding of the whole line. Along the way, we prove that if the complement of an open subset $Y$ of $X$ has small Assouad dimension, then it is a uniform domain. Finally, we prove a quantitative approximation of continua in $X$ by bi-Lipschitz curves.

On the weak-fragmentability index of some Lipschitz-free spaces

Abstract:We show the existence of Lipschitz-free spaces verifying the Point of Continuity Property with arbitrarily high weak-fragmentability index. For this purpose, we use a generalized construction of the countably branching diamond graphs. As a consequence, we deduce that to be Lipschitz-universal for countable complete metric spaces, a separable complete metric space cannot be purely 1-unrectifiable. Another corollary is the existence of an uncountable family of pairwise non-isomorphic Lipschitz-free spaces over purely 1-unrectifiable metric spaces. Some results on compact reduction are also obtained.

Abstract:The initial part of this paper is devoted to the notion of pseudo-seminorm on a vector space $E$. We prove that the topology of every topological vector space is defined by a family of pseudo-seminorms (and so, as it is known, it is uniformizable). Then we devote ourselves to the Lipschitz vector structures on $E$, that is those Lipschitz structures on $E$ for which the addition is a Lipschitz map, while the scalar multiplication is a locally Lipschitz map, and we prove that any topological vector structure on $E$ is associated to some Lipschitz vector structure. Afterwards, we attend to the bornological Lipschitz maps. The final part of the article is devoted to the Lipschitz vector structures compatible with locally convex topologies on $E$.

Abstract:Let be a bounded, closed and convex subset of a reflexive metric space with a digraph such that -intervals along walks are closed and convex. In the main theorem we show that if is a monotone -nonexpansive mapping and there exists such that , then has a fixed point provided for each , has the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings. In particular, it gives an essential generalization of the Dehaish-Khamsi theorem concerning partial orders in complete uniformly convex hyperbolic metric spaces. Some counterparts of this result for modular spaces, and for commutative families of mappings are given too.

Abstract:Suppose that $\{T_{a}:a\in G\}$ is a group of uniformly $L$-Lipschitzian mappings with bounded orbits $\left\{T_{a}x:a\in G\right\}$ acting on a hyperconvex metric space $M$. We show that if $L<\sqrt{2}$, then the set of common fixed points $Fix \, G$ is a nonempty Hölder continuous retract of $M$. As a consequence, it follows that all surjective isometries acting on a bounded hyperconvex space have a common fixed point. A fixed point theorem for $L$-Lipschitzian involutions and some generalizations to the case of $\lambda$-hyperconvex spaces are also given.
