Abstract:Parametric amplifiers have allowed breakthroughs in ultrafast, strong-field, and high-energy density laser science and are an essential tool for extending the frequency range of powerful emerging diode-pumped solid-state laser technology. However, their impact is limited by inherently low quantum efficiency due to nonuniform light extraction. Here we demonstrate a new type of parametric amplifier based on hybridized nonlinear optics. Hybridization of parametric amplification with idler second harmonic generation induces unusual evolution dynamics for a fully parametric amplifier - with saturating rather than cyclic gain - observed here for the first time. This allows highly uniform light extraction enabling unprecedented efficiency for a lossless amplifier with Gaussian-like intensity profiles - a 48-dB single-stage gain with 68% quantum efficiency and 44% pump-to-signal energy conversion - a several-fold improvement over the standard. Possessing both laser-like high quantum efficiency and the advantages of thermal-loading free parametric systems, this simple approach can be implemented widely and have significant impact by increasing several-fold the power available for science and industry.

Abstract:Connecting superconducting qubits to optical fiber necessitates the conversion of microwave photons to optical photons. Modern experimental demonstrations exhibit strong coupling between a microwave resonator and an optical cavity mediated through phononic modes in a mechanical oscillator. This paradigmatic transduction experiment is bounded by a theoretical efficiency with constant driving amplitudes on electromagnetic resonators. By adding a parametric drive to the microwave resonator and optical cavity, we discover the converted signal through the quantum transducer is amplified, while maintaining a lower level of the added noise. We propose a theoretical framework for time-dependent control of the driving lasers based on the input-output formalism of quantum optics and solve analytically the transduction efficiency and added noise when the control signals parametrically drive the system. Abstract:Abstract Multimode fibers (MMFs) are gaining renewed interest for nonlinear effects due to their high-dimensional spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics and scalability for high power. High-brightness MMF sources with effective control of the nonlinear processes would offer possibilities in many areas from high-power fiber lasers, to bioimaging and chemical sensing, and to intriguing physics phenomena. Here we present a simple yet effective way of controlling nonlinear effects at high peak power levels. This is achieved by leveraging not only the spatial but also the temporal degrees of freedom during multimodal nonlinear pulse propagation in step-index MMFs, using a programmable fiber shaper that introduces time-dependent disorders. We achieve high tunability in MMF output fields, resulting in a broadband high-peak-power source. Its potential as a nonlinear imaging source is further demonstrated through widely tunable two-photon and three-photon microscopy. These demonstrations provide possibilities for technology advances in nonlinear optics, bioimaging, spectroscopy, optical computing, and material processing.

Abstract:We provide a theoretical description of light scattering by a spherical particle the permittivity of which is modulated in time at twice the frequency of the incident light. Such a particle acts as a finite-sized photonic time crystal and, despite its subwavelength spatial extent, can host optical parametric amplification. Conditions of parametric Mie resonances in the sphere are derived. We show that time-modulated materials provide a route to tailor directional light amplification, qualitatively different from that in scatterers made from a gain media. We design two characteristic time-modulated spheres that simultaneously exhibit light amplification and desired radiation patterns, including those with zero backward and/or vanishing forward scattering. Abstract:Recently, the spectral manipulation of single photons has been achieved through spatial-temporal modulation of the optical refractive index. Here, we utilized the spatial-temporal modulation of the potential to manipulate the motion of massive particles, i.e., realizing the MeV-magnitude electron acceleration and atom decelerator on a millimeter scale. With the language of spatial-temporal modulation, manipulation of the photons and massive particles are connected and clearly investigated. The spatial-temporal modulation approach is also powerful for the optimization of multistage modulation with a large number of single stages on a photonic integrated chip and can be generalized to a wide range of systems. Abstract:Optical parametric amplification is a second-order nonlinear process whereby an optical signal is amplified by a pump via the generation of an idler field. It is the key ingredient of tunable sources of radiation that play an important role in several photonic applications. This mechanism is inherently related to spontaneous parametric down-conversion that currently constitutes the building block for entangled photon pair generation, which has been exploited in modern quantum technologies ranging from computing to communications and cryptography. Here we demonstrate single-pass optical parametric amplification at the ultimate thickness limit; using semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides, we show that amplification can be attained over a propagation through a single atomic layer. Such a second-order nonlinear interaction at the 2D limit bypasses phase-matching requirements and achieves ultrabroad amplification bandwidths. The amplification process is independent on the in-plane polarization of the impinging signal and pump fields. First-principle calculations confirm the observed polarization invariance and linear relationship between idler and pump powers. Our results pave the way for the development of atom-sized tunable sources of radiation with applications in nanophotonics and quantum information technology.

Abstract:We study parametric amplification of electromagnetic waves using metasurfaces. We design a variable capacitor-loaded metasurface that can amplify incident electromagnetic waves. We analyze various regimes of operation of the system and find that we can achieve a significant gain (over 10 dB) in just one layer of such a structure, and this gain can be controlled by parametric modulation. We study the instability threshold for this system and show that a simple theoretical model agrees well with the results of full numerical simulations.

Abstract:Abstract The rapid progress towards scalable quantum processors demands amplifiers with large bandwidths and high saturation powers. For this purpose, we present a broadband flux-pumped Josephson parametric amplifier integrated with an on-chip coplanar waveguide impedance transformer. Our device can be fabricated with simple and straightforward photo-lithography. This device experimentally achieves an operational bandwidth over 600 MHz with a gain above 15 dB, and a high saturation power with quantum-limited noise performance. In addition, the center frequency of this device can be tuned over several hundred megahertz, which in turn broadens the effective operational bandwidth to around 1 GHz.

Abstract:Amplification of light through stimulated emission or nonlinear optical interactions has had a transformative impact on modern science and technology. The amplification of other bosonic excitations, like phonons in solids, is likely to open up new remarkable physical phenomena. Here, we report on an experimental demonstration of optical phonon amplification. A coherent mid-infrared optical field is used to drive large amplitude oscillations of the Si-C stretching mode in silicon carbide. Upon nonlinear phonon excitation, a second probe pulse experiences parametric optical gain at all wavelengths throughout the reststrahlen band, which reflects the amplification of optical-phonon fluctuations. Starting from first principle calculations, we show that the high-frequency dielectric permittivity and the phonon oscillator strength depend quadratically on the lattice coordinate. In the experimental conditions explored here, these oscillate then at twice the frequency of the optical field and provide a parametric drive for lattice fluctuations. Parametric gain in phononic four wave mixing is a generic mechanism that can be extended to all polar modes of solids, as a new means to control the kinetics of phase transitions, to amplify many body interactions or to control phonon-polariton waves.

Abstract:The ability to amplify optical signals is of pivotal importance across science and technology. The development of optical amplifiers has revolutionized optical communications, which are today pervasively used in virtually all sensing and communication applications of coherent laser sources. In the telecommunication bands, optical amplifiers typically utilize gain media based on III-V semiconductors or rare-earth-doped fibers. Another way to amplify optical signals is to utilize the Kerr nonlinearity of optical fibers or waveguides via parametric processes. Such parametric amplifiers of travelling continuous wave have been originally developed in the microwave domain, and enable quantum-limited signal amplification with high peak gain, broadband gain spectrum tailored via dispersion control, and ability to enable phase sensitive amplification. Despite these advantages, optical amplifiers based on parametric gain have proven impractical in silica fibers due to the low Kerr nonlinearity. Recent advances in photonic integrated circuits have revived interest in parametric amplifiers due to the significantly increased nonlinearity in various integrated platforms. Yet, despite major progress, continuous-wave-pumped parametric amplifiers built on photonic chips have to date remained out of reach. Here we demonstrate a chip-based travelling-wave optical parametric amplifier with net signal gain in the continuous-wave regime. Using ultralow-loss, dispersion-engineered, meter-long, silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits that are tightly coiled on a photonic chip, we achieve a continuous parametric gain of 12 dB that exceeds both the on-chip optical propagation loss and fiber-chip-fiber coupling losses in the optical C-band.

Abstract:Next-generation inter-chip communication requires ultrafast ultra-compact interconnects. Designer plasmonics offers a possible route towards this goal. Further development of the plasmonic technique to circuit applications requires the direct amplification of plasmonic signals on a compact platform. However, significant signal distortions and limited operational speeds prevent the application of traditional MOS-based amplifiers to plasmonics. Up to day, the amplification of surface plasmons without phase distortion has remained a scientific challenge. In this work, the concept of parametric amplification (PA) is transplanted to the plasmonics and is realized experimentally an ultrathin reconfigurable PA using a spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) waveguide integrated with tunable and nonlinear varactors. The measured parametric gain in the experiment can reach up to 9.14 dB within a short nonlinear propagation length, for example, six SSPP wavelengths, in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction. By tuning the bias voltage of varactors, the phase-matching condition can be precisely controlled over a broad frequency band, enabling the authors to realize the multi-frequency PA of plasmonic signals. Measured phase responses confirm that the plasmonic parametric amplifier can significantly suppress the signal distortions as compared with the traditional MOS-based amplifier, which is a property highly desired for ultrafast wireless communication systems and integrated circuits.

Abstract:Quantum-limited Josephson parametric amplifiers play a pivotal role in advancing the field of circuit quantum electrodynamics by enabling the fast and high-fidelity measurement of weak microwave signals. Therefore, it is necessary to develop robust parametric amplifiers with low noise, broad bandwidth, and reduced design complexity for microwave detection. However, current broadband parametric amplifiers either have degraded noise performance or rely on complex designs. Here, we present a device based on the broadband impedance-transformed Josephson parametric amplifier (IMPA) that integrates a horn-like coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission line, which significantly decreases the design and fabrication complexity, while keeping comparable performance. The device shows an instantaneous bandwidth of 700(200) MHz for 15(20) dB gain with an average saturation power of -110 dBm and near quantum-limited added noise. The operating frequency can be tuned over 1.4 GHz using an external flux bias. We further demonstrate the negligible back-action from our device on a transmon qubit. The amplification performance and simplicity of our device promise its wide adaptation in quantum metrology, quantum communication, and quantum information processing.

Abstract:Optical quadratic nonlinearity is ultrafast in nature, while parametric interaction usually manifests only the broadband characteristic. Enormous progress has been made toward broadband phase-matching for parametric amplification and wide applications. In existing devices of broadband parametric amplification, the power efficiency of conversion is restricted to approximately the energy efficiency, and the desire for the signal power enhancement necessitates additional pulse compression after amplification. Here, we demonstrate ultrafast parametric amplification having an extraordinary power efficiency of 1155%; this allows the generation of intense femtosecond pulses without the need for a pulse stretcher and compressor. Direct femtosecond signal amplification by picosecond pumping is enabled by an ultrafast parametric environment in which the pre-delayed signal of faster speed gradually overtakes and effectively depletes the pump of slower speed as they propagate in a nonlinear crystal. The demonstrated technique should lead to breakthroughs in ultrafast lasers as well as applications.

Abstract:High-gain optical parametric amplification is an important nonlinear process used both as a source of coherent infrared light and as a source of nonclassical light. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate an approach to optical parametric amplification that enables extremely large parametric gains with low energy requirements. In conventional nonlinear media driven by femtosecond pulses, multiple dispersion orders limit the effective interaction length available for parametric amplification. Here, we use the dispersion engineering available in periodically poled thin-film lithium niobate nanowaveguides to eliminate several dispersion orders at once. The result is a quasi-static process; the large peak intensity associated with a short pump pulse can provide gain to signal photons without undergoing pulse distortion or temporal walk-off. We characterize the parametric gain available in these waveguides using optical parametric generation, where vacuum fluctuations are amplified to macroscopic intensities. When driven with pulse energies in excess of 10 pJ, we observe saturated parametric gains as large as 88 dB (146 dB/cm). The devices shown here achieve saturated optical parametric generation with orders of magnitude less pulse energy than previous techniques.

Abstract:We demonstrate parametric all-optical modulation in a periodically poled lithium niobate microring resonator on a chip. It uses quantum Zeno blockade between two distinct waves, a signal and a pump, through their sum-frequency generation at a large per-photon efficiency of 8.2 MHz. With nanosecond pump pulses with 6 -mW peak power, 85.7% modulation extinction is observed, achieving an efficiency increase of more than 30 times compared with previous implementations. With only 2 -mW pump peak power, 43.0% modulation extinction is observed for a twice-as-strong signal of 4 mW. This demonstrates that optical transistors with cascadability and fan-out are possible with just parametric nonlinear optics.
