Abstract:The properties of two- and three-dimensional polarons are investigated with the use of extended coherent states. In the weak-coupling limit, the obtained expansions for the ground-state energy and effective mass to the second order in the coupling constant alpha are the same as the previous exact ones. Moreover, in the intermediate-coupling regime, the numerical results for the ground-state energy and effective mass agree with the results by the Feynman path-integral method, and perhaps closer to the exact results than the Feynman ones. It is suggested that the present approach should be an effective one in polaron physics.

Abstract:Halogens are among the most electronegative elements, and the variations in size and polarizability of halogens require different descriptions of the intermolecular bonds they form. Here we use the inelastic tunneling probe (itProbe) to acquire real-space imaging of intermolecular-bonding structures in the two-dimensional self-assembly of halogenbenzene molecules on a metal surface. Direct visualization is obtained for the intermolecular attraction and the "windmill" pattern of bonding among the fully halogenated molecules. Our results provide a hitherto missing understanding of the nature of the halogen bond.
Bifurcated halogen bonds: An ab initio study of the three-center interactions

Abstract:Ab initio calculations at the MP2(full)/aug-cc-pvdz level of theory have been performed to explore the nature of bifurcated or three-center halogen bonds. It has been shown that the three-center interactions in the chlorine-containing complexes are very weak, whereas the interactions in the bromine-containing complexes are relatively stronger. Bifurcated halogen bonds, where single intermolecular contacts are much longer than those of the two-center halogen bonds, exhibit weaker bond strength as compared to the two-center ones. The topological parameters obtained by means of Bader's atoms in molecules (AIM) theory have also been applied for the analysis of these interactions.

Abstract:A series of complexes formed between bromine-containing molecules RBr and HF have been investigated at the MP2(full)/aug-cc-pvdz level of theory. This, together with a previous work [J.W. Zou, Y.J. Jiang, M. Guo, G.X. Hu, B. Zhang, H.C. Liu, Q.S. Yu, Chem. Eur. J. 11 (2005) 740] on the halogen-bonded RBr⋯NH3 complexes, offers a quantitative insight into the nucleophile ‘head on’ and electrophile ‘side on’ interactions of halogens. It has been shown that the stronger electron-withdrawing ability of the moiety bound to the bromine is, the weaker is the Br⋯H interaction to which it gives rise, which is contrary to the trend probed in the RBr⋯NH3 complexes. Several linear relationships have been established to provide further understanding of the ‘amphiphilicity’ of covalently-bonded halogens. The topological parameters obtained in terms of Bader's atoms in molecules (AIM) theory have also been applied for the analysis of these Br⋯H interactions.

Abstract:Quantum chemical calculations using density functional theory are reported for the diatomic molecules LiF, BeO, and BN. The nature of the interatomic interactions is analyzed with the Energy Decomposition Analysis–Natural Orbitals of Chemical Valence (EDA-NOCV) method, and the results are critically discussed and compared with data from Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules, Natural Bond Orbital, and Mayer approaches. Polar bonds, like nonpolar bonds, are caused by the interference of wave functions, which lead to an accumulation of electronic charge in the bonding region. Polar bonds generally have a larger percentage of electrostatic bonding to the total attraction, but nonpolar bonds may also possess large contributions from Coulombic interaction. The term "ionic contribution" refers to valence bond structures and is misleading because it refers to separate fragments with negligible overlap that occur only in the solid state and in solution, not in a molecule. The EDA-NOCV method gives detailed information about the individual orbital contributions, which can be identified by visual inspection of the associated deformation densities. It is very important, particularly for polar bonds to distinguish between the interatomic interactions of the final dissociation products after bond rupture and the interactions between the fragments in the eventually formed bond. The bond formation in LiF is dominated by orbital interactions (90%) between Li and F yielding a single bond, but the eventually formed bond comes mainly from the electrostatic attraction between Li + and F − , where the minor orbital interactions (10%) have equally strong σ and π components. The symmetry allowed bond formation of BeO between Be in the 1 S ground state and O in the excited 1 D state is dominated (90%) by a strong dative Be → O σ bond with negligible π interactions. The final bond situation in BeO is best described by the interaction between Be + and O − , where the Coulombic forces provide 60% of the attraction and the orbital interactions give equally strong σ and π bonds. The chemical bond in BN is analyzed in the X 3 Π ground state and the a 1 Σ + excited state. Both states have triple bonds with strong π bonds, which are in the a 1 Σ + state even stronger than the σ bond.

Abstract:Halogen bonding, a specific intermolecular noncovalent interaction, plays crucial roles in fields as diverse as molecular recognition, crystal engineering, and biological systems. This paper presents an ab initio investigation of a series of dimeric complexes formed between bromobenzene and several electron donors. Such small model systems are selected to mimic halogen bonding interactions found within crystal structures as well as within biological molecules. In all cases, the intermolecular distances are shown to be equal to or below sums of van der Waals radii of the atoms involved. Halogen bonding energies, calculated at the MP2/augcc-pVDZ level, span over a wide range, from -1.52 to -15.53 kcal/mol. The interactions become comparable to, or even prevail over, classical hydrogen bonding. For charge-assisted halogen bonds, calculations have shown that the strength decreases in the order OH- > F- > HCO2- > Cl- > Br-, while for neutral systems, their relative strengths attenuate in the order H2CS > H2CO > NH3 > H2S > H2O. These results agree with those of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) since bond critical points (BCPs) are identified for these halogen bonds. The QTAIM analysis also suggests that strong halogen bonds are more covalent in nature, while weak ones are mostly electrostatic interactions. The electron densities at the BCPs are recommended as a good measure of the halogen bond strength. Finally, natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis has been applied to gain more insights into the origin of halogen bonding interactions.
Study on Halogen Bonding of Organofluorine Compounds in China

Abstract:This review summarizes studies on halogen bonding of fluorine-containing alkyl and aryl iodides in China. From 1987 to 1993, Chen et al. found that there existed donor-acceptor interaction between fluorinated organic (di)iodides, as Lewis acids, and organic Lewis bases such as amines and ethers, which represented early important advances for the research on the non-covalent force currently called as halogen bonding. From 2001 to now, several groups have used halogen bonding as driving force to conduct researches on crystal engineering. In this catogery, Zhu et al. investigated the one-dimensional self-assembly between perfluoro-alpha, pi-diioodalkanes and amines, ethers, and hexamethylphosphamide. Jin et al. studied the complexation between fluorinated aryl iodides and various N-heterocycles, whereas Zhang and Li et al. constructed supramolecular double and quadruple helices from one or two molecular components. Jin et al. conducted extensive studies on C-I center dot center dot center dot pi halogen bonding and its applications in crystal engineering. Wang and Wan et al. utilized halogen bonding to induce trianglular aromatic molecules to co-assemble into two-dimensional honeycomb arrays on surface, whereas Wang et al. utilized halogen bond to induce mono-layer and layer-by-layer self-assembly of two polymers or organic molecules. Zhao and Li et al. developed the applications of halogen bonding in solution-phase multi-site molecular recognition of foldamer receptors for ICF2-incorporated tri-armed guests. Hu, Gong, Liao et al. utilized halogen bonding to improve the material properties of a variety of organic aromatic molecules. Several groups have also used halogen bonding to increase the selectivity of a number of organic reactions. Representative examples are described, which highlight the utility of halogen bonding.
Electron Topological and Energetic Study of the Intermolecular Halogen Bonding Interactions in Complexes H2o Center Dot Center Dot Center Dot M (M = F-2, Clf, and Cf4)

Abstract:The halogen bonding complexes H2O center dot center dot center dot M (M = F-2, ClF, and CF4) in comparison with the hydrogen bonding H2O center dot center dot center dot HF complex are studied by high-level ab initio calculations and electron topological atoms-in-molecules (AIM) analyses. The basis set superposition error corrections are important to predict if the structures are in good agreement with the experimental results. Both the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations and the AIM analyses indicate a interaction strength order: H2O center dot center dot center dot HF > H2O center dot center dot center dot ClF > H2O center dot center dot center dot F-2 > H2O center dot center dot center dot CF4, with the interaction energies -7.91, -4.16, -1.11, and -1.05 kcal/mol, respectively. The symmetry-adapted perturbation theory analyses have been carried out towards understanding of the nature of the halogen bonding interactions in the complexes H2O center dot center dot center dot M (M = F-2, ClF, and CF4), where the exchange energies are the predominant repulsive components. For the complexes involving polar monomers, the hydrogen bonding H2O center dot center dot center dot HF and the halogen bonding H2O center dot center dot center dot ClF, the largest attractive contributions are the electrostatic energies. However, in H2O center dot center dot center dot F-2 and H2O center dot center dot center dot CF4, the attractive dispersion energies become more important, and the induction energy in the former complex is a little higher than that in the latter. In contrary to the red-shifts of H-F, Cl-F, and F-F bond stretching vibrational frequencies in the complexes H2O center dot center dot center dot M (M = HF, ClF, and F-2), the blue-shifts are predicted for C-F bonds neighboring water in H2O center dot center dot center dot CF4.

Abstract:A series of dimeric complexes formed between bromocarbon molecules and two anions (Br- and CN-) have been investigated by using MP2 method. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and the second-order perturbation natural bond orbital (NBO) approaches were applied to analyze the electron density distributions of these complexes and to explore the nature of charge-assisted halogen bonding interactions. As anticipated, these interactions are significantly stronger relative to the corresponding neutral ones. The results derived from ab initio calculations described herein reveal a major contribution from the electrostatic interaction on the stability of the systems considered. Beside the electrostatic interaction, the charge-transfer force and the second-order orbital interaction also play an important role in the formation of the complexes, as a NBO analysis suggested. The presence of halogen bonds in the complexes has been identified in terms of the QTAIM methodology, and several linear relationships have been established to provide more insight into charge-assisted halogen bonding interactions. Abstract:Ab initio calculations have been performed on a series of complexes formed between halogen-containing molecules and ammonia to gain a deeper insight into the nature of halogen bonding. It appears that the dihalogen molecules form the strongest halogen-bonded complexes with ammonia, followed by HOX; the charge-transfer-type contribution has been demonstrated to dominate the halogen bonding in these complexes. For the complexes involving carbon-bound halogen molecules, our calculations clearly indicate that electrostatic interactions are mainly responsible for their binding energies. Whereas the halogen-bond strength is significantly enhanced by progressive fluorine substitution, the substitution of a hydrogen atom by a methyl group in the CH(3)X...NH(3) complex weakened the halogen bonding. Moreover, remote substituent effects have also been noted in the complexes of halobenzenes with different para substituents. The influence of the hybridization state of the carbon atom bonded to the halogen atom has also been examined and the results reveal that halogen-bond strengths decrease in the order HC triple bond CX > H(2)C=CHX approximately O=CHX approximately C(6)H(5)X > CH(3)X. In addition, several excellent linear correlations have been established between the interaction energies and both the amount of charge transfer and the electrostatic potentials corresponding to an electron density of 0.002 au along the R-X axis; these correlations provide good models with which to evaluate the electron-accepting abilities of the covalently bonded halogen atoms. Finally, some positively charged halogen-bonded systems have been investigated and the effect of the charge has been discussed.

Abstract:Computational quantum chemical techniques were utilized to systematically examine how electron-donating groups affect the electronic and spectroscopic properties of halogen bond donors and their corresponding complexes. Unlike the majority of studies on halogen bonding, where electron-withdrawing groups are utilized, this work investigates the influence of electron-donating substituents within the halogen bond donors. Statistical analyses were performed on the descriptors of halogen bond donors in a prescribed set of archetype, halo-alkyne, halo-benzene, and halo-ethynyl benzene halogen bond systems. The σ-hole magnitude, binding and interaction energies, and the vibrational X···N local force constant (where X = Cl, Br, I, and At) were found to correlate very well in a monotonic and linear manner with all other properties studied. In addition, enhanced halogen bonds were found when the systems contained electron-donating groups that could form intramolecular hydrogen bonds with the electronegative belt of the halogen atom and adjacent linker features.

Abstract:Ab initio calculations have been performed on single-electron halogen bonds between methyl radical and bromine-containing molecules to gain a deeper insight into the nature of such noncovalent interactions. Bader's atoms in molecules (AIM) theory have also been applied to the analysis of the linking of the single-electron halogen bond. Various characteristics of the R-(BrCH3)-C-... interaction, i.e., binding energies, geometrical parameters and topological properties of the electron density have been determined. The presence of the bond critical points (BCPs) between the bromine atom and methyl radical and the values of electron density and Laplacian of electron density at these BCPs indicate the closed-shell interactions in the complexes. The single-electron halogen bonds, which are significantly weaker than the normal halogen bonds, exhibit equally bond strength as compared to the single-electron hydrogen bond. Abstract:Ab initio calculations at the MP2/aug-cc-PVDZ level of theory have been carried out to investigate a large number of complexes formed between halogen-containing molecules and several electron donors. It is shown that the strength of certain halogen bonds turns out to be greater than that of well-studied hydrogen bonds. Bader’s atoms in molecules (AIM) theory has also been applied, and it is found that the electron densities at the halogen bond critical points correlate with the interaction energies, which indicates that the electron density can serve as a convenient measure of the strength of the different types of halogen bonding. Similar to hydrogen bonds, halogen bonds can be classified in a range from weak bonds, which are regarded as electrostatic interactions, to strong bonds, which have some degree of covalent character.
Halogen Bonding: an AIM Analysis of the Weak Interactions

Abstract:A series of complexes formed between halogen-containing molecules and ammonia have been investigated by means of the atoms in molecules (AIM) approach to gain a deeper insight into halogen bonding. The existence of the halogen bond critical points (XBCP) and the values of the electron density (rho(b)) and Laplacian of electron density (del(2)rho(b)) at the XBCP reveal the closed-shell interactions in these complexes. Integrated atomic properties such as charge, energy, polarization moment, volume of the halogen bond donor atoms, and the corresponding changes (Delta) upon complexation have been calculated. The present calculations have demonstrated that the halogen bond represents different AIM properties as compared to the well-documented hydrogen bond. Both the electron density and the Laplacian of electron density at the XBCP have been shown to correlate well with the interaction energy, which indicates that the topological parameters at the XBCP can be treated as a good measure of the halogen bond strength. In addition, an excellent linear relationship between the interatomic distance d(X center dot center dot center dot N) and the logarithm of rho(b) has been established.

Abstract:From Bigger to Smaller: Unraveling the influence of size and Pauli repulsion on halogen bond directionality. The potential energy landscape is shaped by anisotropic electron density through Pauli repulsion in larger halogens, whereas the influence of electrostatic forces on bond orientation becomes more pronounced in smaller halogens. Halogen bonds are typically observed to have a linear arrangement with a 180° angle between the nucleophile and the halogen bond acceptor X−R. This linearity is commonly explained using the σ‐hole model, although there have been alternative explanations involving exchange repulsion forces. We employ two‐dimensional Distortion/Interaction and Energy Decomposition Analysis to examine the archetypal H3N⋯X2 halogen bond systems. Our results indicate that although halogen bonds are predominantly electrostatic, their directionality is largely due to decreased Pauli repulsion in linear configurations as opposed to angled ones in the I2 and Br2 systems. As we move to the smaller halogens, Cl2 and F2, the influence of Pauli repulsion diminishes, and the energy surface is shaped by orbital interactions and electrostatic forces. These results support the role of exchange repulsion forces in influencing the directionality of strong halogen bonds. Additionally, we demonstrate that the 2D Energy Decomposition Analysis is a useful tool for enhancing our understanding of the nature of potential energy surfaces in noncovalent interactions.

Halogen Cation Transfer in Halogen Bonding Catalysis

Abstract:The potential of fluorine to participate in halogen bonding (XB) has remained a subject of ongoing debate. The discovery of N-fluoropyridinium triflate as a unique "F-cation organocatalyst" for aziridine synthesis is considered to be the first reported example of F-halogen bonding catalysis. Nevertheless, the mechanistic details of this reaction have remained elusive, and compelling evidence supporting the F-halogen bond catalysis has been lacking. In this study, we present an in-depth computational investigation of the mechanism of this reaction to gain insight into the intriguing role of the F-cation organocatalyst. Our results, however, are inconsistent with the previous prevalent F-halogen bonding catalysis mechanism but instead, bring to light a new fluorine cation transfer mechanism. Control experiments provide further support for this alternative mechanism. Moreover, preliminary results suggest that other reactions traditionally attributed to ‘classic’ halogen bonding catalysis might also involve a halogen cation transfer process. These mechanistic insights have important far reaching implications for the rational design of halogen bonding catalytic systems.

Abstract:As important noncovalent interactions, halogen bonds have been widely used in material science, supramolecular chemistry, medicinal chemistry, organocatalysis, and other fields. In the past 15 years, halogen bond catalysis has become a developed field in organocatalysis for the catalysts' advantages of being environmentally friendly, inexpensive, and recyclable. Halogen bonds can induce various organic reactions, and halogen bond catalysis has become a powerful alternative to the fully explored hydrogen bond catalysis. From a physical chemistry view, this perspective provides an overview of the latest progress and key examples of halogen bond catalysis via activation of the lone pair systems of organic functional group, π systems, and metal complexes. The research progresses in halogen bond catalysis by our group were also introduced.

Abstract:Open-shell halogen (X = F, Cl, Br) atoms form entrance-channel complexes with H2O, which play an important role in the X + H2O reactions. A comparison of the two complex series reveals that the hybridization state of the carbon atom bonded to iodine has a less pronounced effect on the interatomic distances I⋯X in the iodo-PFC series in relation to the iodo-HC series. PCM calculations used to investigate the solvent effect on halogen bonds unveil that, in the gas phase, fluorine anion prefers to form halogen-bonded complexes with respect to chloride, bromide, and iodine anions; however, the preference is not obvious, and even an opposite order is observed in solutions. It is worth mentioning that the iodo-PFC⋯ fluorine anion complexes present a special structure, i.e. the interatomic I⋯F distances in these complexes are relatively short and the corresponding C–I bonds tend to be further broken. These features, in combination with the geometrical data, indicate that ate-complexes are formed between iodo-PFC and fluorine anions.
