Abstract:Alloy nanocrystals (NCs) of Pt with 3d transition metals, especially Ni, are excellent catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, we, for the first time, demonstrated the water phase colloidal synthesis of Pt- M ( M = Ni, Co and Fe) alloy NCs with tunable composition and morphology through a facile hydrothermal method. Pt-Ni alloy NCs synthesized with this method presented better ORR activity than commercial Pt/C catalysts. The X-ray energy dispersive spectra (EDS) mapping technique revealed that Pt-enriched shells existed on the as-synthesized Pt-Ni alloy NCs. About two atom thick layered Pt-enriched shells formed on Pt 50 Ni 50 NCs and the thickness of the Pt-enriched shells increased as the Ni content increased. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the oxidation level of the surface Pt atoms on the Pt-Ni alloy NCs decreased compared with monometallic Pt NCs, implying a decrease in the oxophilicity of the surface Pt atoms. Pt-Ni alloy NCs with lower oxophilicity of the surface Pt atoms give higher ORR activity. The most active alloy sample showed 13 times higher specific activity and six times higher mass activity at 0.9 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode when compared with commercial Pt/C. Pt-Ni alloy NCs also showed better durability than commercial Pt/C in long term ORR tests.

Abstract:In article number 1400696, Zhongqin Yang, Gengfeng Zheng, and co-workers report the use of chemically reduced, mesoporous Co3O4 nanowires for enhanced sunlight-driven water splitting and oxygen evolution reaction. Mesoporous Co3O4 nanowires are effectively reduced by NaBH4 and new oxygen vacancies are formed during this process. These oxygen vacancies lead to much higher electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity of Co3O4 nanowires.

Abstract:It is highly desired to design and develop highly efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reactions. Herein, we report the development of ultrafine PtCo alloy nanoparticle decorated one-dimensional Co nanowires grown on Ti mesh (PtCo-Co/TiM). Owing to its favorable composition and structure, the PtCo-Co/TiM can deliver an ultrahigh current density of 46.5 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential of 70 mV in 1.0 M KOH, superior to recently reported Pt-based electrocatalysts. This catalyst also provides excellent long-term electrochemical durability with its catalytic activity being maintained for at least 50 h.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic activity of alloy nanocatalytsts can be manipulated effectively by tuning their physical properties (ensemble, geometric, and ligand effects) to afford optimal surface structure and compositions for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) application. Herein, highly catalytic platinum-palladium nanowires (PtnPd100-n NWs) with a subtle lattice strain and Boerdijk-Coxeter helix type morphology are synthesized through a surfactant-free, thermal single phase solvent method. X-ray diffraction results show that PtnPd100-n NWs are exposed through the (111) facets and their shrinking or expanding lattice parameters can be modulated by the alloy compositions. Electrochemical results reveal that their high catalytic activity correlates with the lattice shrinking, facets, and bimetallic compositions, showing higher activity when the ratio of Pt and Pd is similar to 78:22, which is further supported by DFT results. Compared to the nanoparticle type platinum-palladium alloyed catalysts with similar metal compositions (PtnPd100-n NPs), the PtnPd100-n NWs exhibit significantly improved electrocatalytic activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction. These findings open new strategies to design the highly active and stable alloy nanocatalysts with controllable compositions.

Abstract:In this paper, ultrathin Pt nanowires (Pt NWs) and PtNi alloy nanowires (PtNi NWs) supported on carbon were synthesized as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Pt and PtNi NWs catalysts composed of interconnected nanoparticles were prepared by using a soft template method with CTAB as the surface active agent. The physical characterization and electrocatalytic performance of Pt NWs and PtNi NWs catalysts for ORR were investigated and the results were compared with the commercial Pt/C catalyst. The atomic ratio of Pt and Ni in PtNi alloy was approximately 3 to 1. The results show that after alloying with Ni, the binding energy of Pt shifts to higher values, indicating the change of its electronic structure, and that Pt3Ni NWs catalyst has a significantly higher electrocatalytic activity and good stability for ORR as compared to Pt NWs and even Pt/C catalyst. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity of Pt3Ni NWs catalyst is mainly resulted from the downshifted-band center of Pt caused by the interaction between Pt and Ni in the alloy, which facilitates the desorption of oxygen containing species (Oads or OHads) and the release of active sites.

Abstract:Platinum nanowire arrays (Pt NWs) catalyst was fabricated by electrodepositing with anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) as a template. The morphology and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalytic properties of the as-prepared platinum nanowire array catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical measurements. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) showed that the specific electrochemical surface area (ECSA) of the Pt NWs was much higher than the geometric area. The half wave potential in the oxygen reduction reaction curves of the Pt NWs was more positive than that of Pt/C from the rotating disk electrode (RDE) measurements. Moreover, Pt NWs catalysts give higher limiting diffusion current by comparison with that of conventional Pt/C catalyst.

The mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt3Ni core-shell framework nanowire configuration combines the advantages of three-dimensional open mesopore molecular accessibility and compressive Pt-skin surface strains, which results in more catalytically active sites and weakened chemisorption of oxygenated species, thus boosting its catalytic activity and stability towards electrocatalysis.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) takes place on the surface of catalyst, and the precise control of surface component at atomic scale has been an important factor to effectively improve the performance of catalysts. Herein, a highly active and stable catalyst is designed by constructing Pt skin and controllable near-surface atomic distribution of PtNi alloy nanowires (NWs). It is found that the d-band center of Pt-skin down-shifts with Pt ratio in the surface/near-surface of PtNi alloy decreasing, and correspondingly the adsorption energy of atomic oxygen (Delta EO) on PtNi alloys weakens, confirmed by experimental results and theoretical calculations. The optimum PtNi/C-NH3 NWs exhibit the enhanced mass activity (1.02 A mgPt- 1) and specific activity (3.86 mA cm-2) for ORR, which are 5.7-fold and 11.4-fold higher than those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. Moreover, the H2/air fuel cell of PtNi/C-NH3 NWs exhibits a current density of 308 mA cm-2 at 0.8 V, which is superior to that of the 2020 target of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Our study provides a new perspective and approach in promoting the electrocatalysis on alloy nanomaterials for ORR.

Abstract:Nanocatalysts that boost the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction with a long-term durability are crucial for widespread use of low-temperature fuel cells. Here we report a nanoporous intermetallic compound typically composed of platinum-cobalt-aluminum intermetallic core with in-situ grown atomic-layer-thick Pt skin as a novel oxygen-reduction-reaction nanocatalyst with remarkably enhanced performance. Both Pt and Co atoms thermodynamically prefer to locate nearby Al element within face-centered cubic Pt3Al matrix via the formation of strong Pt-Al and Co-Al bonds, which not only enable synergistic ligand and compressive strain effects to moderately weaken the oxygen adsorption energy of Pt skin, but alleviate the evolution of surface Pt atoms to protect against the further dissolution of less-noble Co and Al. As a result, the nanoporous platinum cobalt aluminum nanocatalyst exhibits specific activity of 3.40 mA cm(Pt)(-2) and mass activity of 2.2 A mg(Pt)(-1), for the oxygen reduction reaction at 0.9 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (similar to 13- and similar to 20-fold enhancement relative to commercially available platinum nanoparticles supported carbon) with an exceptional durability, showing genuine potential as cathode catalyst in next-generation electrochemical energy conversion devices. Abstract:Fuel cells, as the alternative to fossil energy, have engaged widespread attention by reason of the high conversion efficiency from the chemical energy to the electric energy combined with low pollution emissions. The cathodic ORR catalysts with excellent performance and cost-effectiveness are the dominant point towards the massive development of fuel cells. Here, our group select the Pd NWs as the template and construct the Pd@PtRuNi core–shell bilayer nanostructure to expand platinum atom utilization. Pd@PtRuNi bilayer core–shell NWs unfold elevated mass activity of 1.62 A mg metal − 1 at 0.9 V versus RHE in alkaline media, 2.03- and 6.23-fold of pristine Pd NWs and benchmark commercial Pt/C, respectively. Meanwhile, the cyclic stability tests reveal the excellent durability of Pd@PtRuNi NWs, whose mass activity is only 13.58% degradation after accelerated durability tests. The catalytic activity and durability towards ORR are better than the U.S. 2025 DOE target ( 0.44 A mg pt − 1 and less than 40% activity attenuation at 0.9 V after 30 000 potential cycles). The elevated catalytic properties can be traceable to the synergism between the ligand effect of Ni and Ru and one-dimensional structure superiority, which optimizes the electronic structure of active sites, promotes the charge transfer and restrains the agglomeration and detachment.
