Abstract:Holomorphic representations are lowest weight representations for simple Lie groups of Hermitian type and have been studied extensively. Inspired by the work of Kobayashi on discrete series for indefinite Stiefel manifolds, Gross-Wallach on quaternonic discrete series and their analytic continuation, and Orsted-Wolf on Borel-de Siebenthal discrete series, we define and study Borel-de Siebenthal representations (also called quasi-holomorphic representations) associated with Borel-de Siebenthal root systems for simple Lie groups of non-Hermitian type.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical Lie groups GL(n+1)(R), GL(n+1)(C), U(p, q + 1), O(p, q + 1), On+1(C), SO(p, q + 1), SOn+1(C), and let G' be respectively the subgroup GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), O(p, q), O-n(C), SO(p, q), SO (C), embedded in G in the standard way. We show that every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G' occurs with multiplicity at most one in every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G. Similar results are proved for the Jacobi groups GL(n)(R) (sic) H2n+1(R), GL(n)(C) (sic) H2n+1 (C), U(p, q) (sic) H2p+2q+1(R), Sp(2n)(R) (sic) H2n+1(R), Sp(2n)(C) (sic) H2n+1 (C) with their respective subgroups GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), Sp(2n)(R), and SP2n(C).

Abstract:We prove that any simply connected non-compact semisimple Lie group $G$ admits an infinite-dimensional irreducible representation $\Pi$ with bounded multiplicity property of the restriction $\Pi|_{G'}$ for all symmetric pairs $(G, G')$. We also discuss which irreducible representations $\Pi$ satisfy the bounded multiplicity property.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical groups GL(n), U(n), O(n) or Sp(2n), over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero. It is well known that the contragredient of an irreducible admissible smooth representation of G is isomorphic to a twist of it by an automorphism of G. We prove that similar results hold for double covers of G that occur in the study of local theta correspondences.

The $L_p$-dual space of a semisimple Lie group

Abstract:Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group. We describe the irreducible representations of $G$ by linear isometries on $L_p$-spaces for $p\in (1,+\infty)$ with $p\neq 2.$ More precisely, we show that, for every such representation $\pi,$ there exists a parabolic subgroup $Q$ of $G$ such that $\pi$ is equivalent to the natural representation of $G$ on $L_p(G/Q)$ twisted by a unitary character of $Q.$ When $G$ is of real rank one, we give a complete classification of the possible irreducible representations of $G$ on an $L_p$-space for $p\neq 2,$ up to equivalence.

Abstract:Let $K\leq H$ be two finite groups and let $C\leq A$ be two finite abelian groups, with $H$ acting on $A$ as a group of isomorphisms admitting $C$ as a $K$-invariant subgroup. We study the homogeneous space $X\coloneqq\left(H\ltimes A\right)/\left(K\ltimes C\right)$ and determine the decomposition of the permutation representation of $H\ltimes A$ acting on $X$. We then characterize when this is multiplicity-free, that is, when $\left(H\ltimes A,K\ltimes C\right)$ is a Gelfand pair. If this is the case, we explicitly calculate the corresponding spherical functions. From our general construction and related analysis, we recover Dunkl's results on the $q$-analog of the nonbinary Johnson scheme.

Infinite Dimensional Multiplicity Free Spaces I: Limits of Compact Commutative Spaces

Abstract:We study direct limits $(G,K) = \varinjlim (G_n,K_n)$ of compact Gelfand pairs. First, we develop a criterion for a direct limit representation to be a multiplicity--free discrete direct sum of irreducible representations. Then we look at direct limits $G/K = \varinjlim G_n/K_n$ of compact riemannian symmetric spaces, where we combine our criterion with the Cartan--Helgason Theorem to show in general that the regular representation of $G = \varinjlim G_n$ on a certain function space $\varinjlim L^2(G_n/K_n)$ is multiplicity free. That method is not applicable for direct limits of nonsymmetric Gelfand pairs, so we introduce two other methods. The first, based on ``parabolic direct limits'' and ``defining representations'', extends the method used in the symmetric space case. The second uses some (new) branching rules from finite dimensional representation theory. In both cases we define function spaces $\cA(G/K)$, $\cC(G/K)$ and $L^2(G/K)$ to which our multiplicity--free criterion applies.

Weak abelian direct summands and irreducibility of Galois representations

Abstract:Let $\rho_\ell$ be a semisimple $\ell$-adic representation of a number field $K$ that is unramified almost everywhere. We introduce a new notion called weak abelian direct summands of $\rho_\ell$ and completely characterize them, for example, if the algebraic monodromy of $\rho_\ell$ is connected. If $\rho_\ell$ is in addition $E$-rational for some number field $E$, we prove that the weak abelian direct summands are locally algebraic (and thus de Rham). We also show that the weak abelian parts of a connected semisimple Serre compatible system form again such a system. Using our results on weak abelian direct summands, when $K$ is totally real and $\rho_\ell$ is the three-dimensional $\ell$-adic representation attached to a regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic, not necessarily polarizable representation $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_3(\mathbb{A}_K)$ together with an isomorphism $\mathbb{C}\simeq \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$, we prove that $\rho_\ell$ is irreducible. We deduce in this case also some $\ell$-adic Hodge theoretic properties of $\rho_\ell$ if $\ell$ belongs to a Dirichlet density one set of primes.

The Monopole Equations in Topological Yang-Mills

Abstract:We twist the monopole equations of Seiberg and Witten and show how these equations are realized in topological Yang-Mills theory. A Floer derivative and a Morse functional are found and are used to construct a unitary transformation between the usual Floer cohomologies and those of the monopole equations. Furthermore, these equations are seen to reside in the vanishing self-dual curvature condition of an $OSp(1|2)$-bundle. Alternatively, they may be seen arising directly from a vanishing self-dual curvature condition on an $SU(2)$-bundle in which the fermions are realized as spanning the tangent space for a specific background.

A spectral theorem for compact representations and non-unitary cusp forms

Abstract:We show that a compact representation of a semisimple Lie group has an orthogonal decomposition into finite length representations. This generalises and simplifies a number of more special spectral theorems in the literature. We apply it to the case of cusp forms, thus settling the spectral theory for the space of non-unitary twisted cusp forms.

Abstract:Expository article on semisimple Lie groups of Hermitian type and their unitary representations known as the holomorphic discrete series. The realization of the symmetric spaces associated to the groups as bounded symmetric domains is described. The representations in question are defined by holomorphic induction and realized on spaces of vector-valued holomorphic functions on the domain. A key question is whether the induction process yields a non-zero space. It is answered by Harish-Chandra's condition, for which a complete proof is given.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field. Let $\Pi$ be a principal series representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ induced from an irreducible cuspidal representation of a Levi subgroup. When $\pi$ is an essentially square integrable representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)$ we prove that $\mathrm{Hom}_{\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}}(\Pi,\pi) = \mathbb{C}$ and $\mathrm{Ext}^i_{\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}}(\Pi,\pi) = 0$ for all integers $i\geq 1$, with exactly one exception (up to twists), namely, when $\Pi= \nu^{-(\frac{n-1}{2})} \times \nu^{-(\frac{n-3}{2})} \times \ldots \times \nu^{(\frac{n-1}{2})}$ and $\pi$ is the Steinberg. When $\Pi= \nu^{-(\frac{n-1}{2})} \times \nu^{-(\frac{n-3}{2})} \times \ldots \times \nu^{(\frac{n-1}{2})}$ and $\pi$ is the Steinberg of $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)$, then $\dim \mathrm{Hom}_{\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)}(\Pi,\pi)=n$. We also exhibit specific principal series for which each of the intermediate multiplicities $2, 3, \cdots, (n-1)$ are attained. Along the way, we also give a complete list of those irreducible non-generic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(F)$ that have the Steinberg of $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)$ as a quotient upon restriction to $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)$. We also show that there do not exist non-generic irreducible representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(F)$ that have the generalized Steinberg as a quotient upon restriction to $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)$.

On the representation theory of the symmetry group of the Cantor set

Abstract:In previous work with Harman, we introduced a new class of representations for an oligomorphic group $G$, depending on an auxiliary piece of data called a measure. In this paper, we look at this theory when $G$ is the symmetry group of the Cantor set. We show that $G$ admits exactly two measures $\mu$ and $\nu$. The representation theory of $(G, \mu)$ is the linearization of the category of $\mathbf{F}_2$-vector spaces, studied in recent work of the author and closely connected to work of Kuhn and Kovács. The representation theory of $(G, \nu)$ is the linearization of the category of vector spaces over the Boolean semi-ring (or, equivalently, the correspondence category), studied by Bouc--Thévenaz. The latter case yields an important counterexample in the general theory.

Distinction of the Steinberg representation with respect to a symmetric pair

Abstract:Let $K$ be a non-archimedean local field of residual characteristic $p\neq 2$. Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over $K$, let $\theta$ be an involution of $G$ over $K$, and let $H$ be the connected component of $\theta$-fixed subgroup of $G$ over $K$. By realizing the Steinberg representation of $G$ as the $G$-space of complex smooth harmonic cochains following the idea of Broussous--Courtès, we study its space of distinction by $H$ as a finite dimensional complex vector space. We give an upper bound of the dimension, and under certain conditions, we show that the upper bound is sharp by explicitly constructing a basis using the technique of Poincaré series. Finally, we apply our general theory to the case where $G$ is a general linear group and $H$ a special orthogonal subgroup, which leads to a complete classification result.

Abstract:We study the representation theory of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$, constructing two spectral sequences which eventually annihilate precisely the superdimension zero indecomposable modules in the finite-dimensional category. The pages of these spectral sequences, along with their limits, define symmetric monoidal functors on $\mathrm{Rep} (\mathfrak{gl}(1|1))$. These two spectral sequences are related by contragredient duality, and from their limits we construct explicit semisimplification functors, which we explicitly prove are isomorphic up to a twist. We use these tools to prove branching results for the restriction of simple modules over Kac-Moody and queer Lie superalgebras to $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$-subalgebras.

Abstract:For a semisimple Lie group $G$ satisfying the equal rank condition, the most basic family of unitary irreducible representations is the Discrete Series found by Harish-Chandra. In this paper, we continue our study of the branching laws for Discrete Series when restricted to a subgroup $H$ of the same type by use of integral and differential operators in combination with our previous duality principle. Many results are presented in generality, others are shown in detail for Holomorphic Discrete Series.

Abstract:Let $D$ denote a quaternion division algebra over a non-archimedean local field $F$ with characteristic zero. Let $Sp_n(D)$ be the unique non-split inner form of the symplectic group $Sp_{2n}(F)$. An irreducible admissible representation $(\pi, V)$ of $GL_{n}(D)$ is said to have a symplectic model (or said to be $Sp_n(D)$-distinguished) if there exists a linear functional $\phi$ on $V$ such that $\phi(\pi(h)v) = \phi(v)$ for all $v \in V$ and $h \in Sp_n(D)$. This article classifies those ladder representations of $GL_n(D)$ that possess a symplectic model (i.e., those representations that are $Sp_n(D)$-distinguished). Recently, Prasad conjectured that non-supercuspidal discrete series representations of $GL_n(D)$ do not admit a symplectic model. We confirm this for the Steinberg representations, which serve as canonical examples of discrete series representations. Furthermore, we demonstrate the hereditary nature of the symplectic model for induced representations derived from finite-length representations. In addition, we prove a part of Prasad's conjecture, which provides a family of irreducible unitary representations, all equipped with a symplectic model.

Abstract:Let k be an odd positive integer, L a lattice on a regular positive definite k -dimensional quadratic space over ℚ , N_L the level of L , and ℳ(L) be the linear space of θ -series attached to the distinct classes in the genus of L . We prove that, for an odd prime p|N_L , if L_p=L_p,1 L_p,2 , where L_p,1 is unimodular, L_p,2 is ( p )-modular, and ℚ_pL_p,2 is anisotropic, then ℳ(L;p):= ℳ(L) +T_p^2. ℳ(L) is stable under the Hecke operator T_p^2 . If L_2 is isometric to ( [ 0 1/2; 1/2 0 ]) ^κ ⟨ε⟩ or ( [ 0 1/2; 1/2 0 ]) ^κ ⟨ 2ε⟩ or ( [ 0 1; 1 0 ]) ^κ ⟨ε⟩ with ε∈ℤ_2^× and κ :=k-1/2 , then ℳ(L;2):=T_2^2.ℳ(L)+T_2^2^2. ℳ(L) is stable under the Hecke operator T_2^2 . Furthermore, we determine some invariant subspaces of the cusp forms for the Hecke operators.
