Abstract:The design of a Martian autonomous rotary wing vehicle (MARV) is described. MARV is a 50-kg gross takeoff mass; coaxial helicopter designed for Mars exploration. Powered by a fuel cell system, it carries a payload of 10.8 kg over a range of 25 km with an endurance of 39 min including hover capability for 1 min. MARV is designed in response to the Request For Proposal from NASA/Sikorsky for the Year 2000 American Helicopter Society student design competition. The design covers aerodynamic and structural design of rotor blades, vehicle power plant, fuselage and landing gear, control system, transmission, and vehicle lander communications. A detailed mechanism for autonomous deployment of the vehicle from the lander is also described. This preliminary design study indicates that controlled vertical flight on Mars is feasible with existing technology.
Autonomously Generating Operations Sequences for a Mars Rover Using Artificial Intelligence-Based Planning

Abstract:This article discusses a proof-of-concept prototype for ground-based automatic generation of validated rover command sequences from high-level science and engineering activities. This prototype is based on ASPEN, the Automated Scheduling and Planning Environment. This artiflcial intelligence (AI)-based planning and scheduling system will automatically generate a command sequence that will execute within resource constraints and satisfy ∞ight rules. An automated planning and scheduling system encodes rover design knowledge and uses search and reasoning techniques to automatically generate low-level command sequences while respecting rover operability constraints, science and engineering preferences, environmental predictions, and also adhering to hard temporal constraints. This prototype planning system has been fleld-tested using the Rocky 7 rover at JPL and will be fleld-tested on more complex rovers to prove its efiectiveness before transferring the technology to ∞ight operations for an upcoming NASA mission. Enabling goaldriven commanding of planetary rovers greatly reduces the requirements for highly skilled rover engineering personnel. This in turn greatly reduces mission operations costs. In addition, goal-driven commanding permits a faster response to changes in rover state (e.g., faults) or science discoveries by removing the time-consuming manual sequence validation process, allowing rapid \what-if" analyses, and thus reducing overall cycle times.

Autonomous driving test for Mars rovers

Abstract:SOFTWARE UK researchers have tested their software for autonomous navigation on Mars, at Ibn Battuta Test Centre in Morocco. Sherpa, the German-built rover under their command, travelled 1.4 km; it is hoped that martian rovers will travel up to a kilometre per day without input from Earth. Companies and universities from around the UK participated in tests of autonomous decision-making, sensor suites, data combination and overall operating systems. The tests are funded by the European Commission via Horizon2020.

A Novel Methodology for Autonomous Planetary Exploration Using Multi-Robot Teams

Abstract:One of the fundamental limiting factors in planetary exploration is the autonomous capabilities of planetary exploration rovers. This study proposes a novel methodology for trustworthy autonomous multi-robot teams which incorporates data from multiple sources (HiRISE orbiter imaging, probability distribution maps, and on-board rover sensors) to find efficient exploration routes in Jezero crater. A map is generated, consisting of a 3D terrain model, traversability analysis, and probability distribution map of points of scientific interest. A three-stage mission planner generates an efficient route, which maximises the accumulated probability of identifying points of interest. A 4D RRT* algorithm is used to determine smooth, flat paths, and prioritised planning is used to coordinate a safe set of paths. The above methodology is shown to coordinate safe and efficient rover paths, which ensure the rovers remain within their nominal pitch and roll limits throughout operation.

Assurance for Autonomy -- JPL's past research, lessons learned, and future directions

Abstract:Robotic space missions have long depended on automation, defined in the 2015 NASA Technology Roadmaps as "the automatically-controlled operation of an apparatus, process, or system using a pre-planned set of instructions (e.g., a command sequence)," to react to events when a rapid response is required. Autonomy, defined there as "the capacity of a system to achieve goals while operating independently from external control," is required when a wide variation in circumstances precludes responses being pre-planned, instead autonomy follows an on-board deliberative process to determine the situation, decide the response, and manage its execution. Autonomy is increasingly called for to support adventurous space mission concepts, as an enabling capability or as a significant enhancer of the science value that those missions can return. But if autonomy is to be allowed to control these missions' expensive assets, all parties in the lifetime of a mission, from proposers through ground control, must have high confidence that autonomy will perform as intended to keep the asset safe to (if possible) accomplish the mission objectives. The role of mission assurance is a key contributor to providing this confidence, yet assurance practices honed over decades of spaceflight have relatively little experience with autonomy. To remedy this situation, researchers in JPL's software assurance group have been involved in the development of techniques specific to the assurance of autonomy. This paper summarizes over two decades of this research, and offers a vision of where further work is needed to address open issues.

Abstract:NASA’s Perseverance rover uses robotic autonomy to achieve its mission goals on Mars. Its self-driving autonomous navigation system (AutoNav) has been used to evaluate 88% of the 17.7-kilometer distance traveled during its first Mars year of operation. Previously, the maximum total autonomous distance evaluated was 2.4 kilometers by the Opportunity rover during its 14-year lifetime. AutoNav has set multiple planetary rover records, including the greatest distance driven without human review (699.9 meters) and the greatest single-day drive distance (347.7 meters). The Autonomous Exploration for Gathering Increased Science (AEGIS) system analyzes wide-angle imagery onboard to autonomously select targets for observations by the SuperCam instrument, a multimode sensor suite capable of millimeter-scale geochemical and mineralogical analysis. AEGIS enables observations of scientifically interesting targets during or immediately after long drives without the need for ground communication. OnBoard Planner (OBP) is a scheduling capability planned for operational use in September 2023 that has the potential to reduce energy usage by up to 20% and complete drive and arm-contact science campaigns in 25% fewer days on Mars. This paper presents an overview of the AutoNav, AEGIS, and OBP capabilities used on Perseverance. The Importance of Adaptive Decision-Making for Autonomous Long-Range Planetary Surface Mobility

Abstract:Long-distance driving is an important component of planetary surface exploration. Unforeseen events often require human operators to adjust mobility plans, but this approach does not scale and will be insufficient for future missions. Interest in self-reliant rovers is increasing, however the research community has not yet given significant attention to autonomous, adaptive decision-making. In this paper, we look back at specific planetary mobility operations where human-guided adaptive planning played an important role in mission safety and productivity. Inspired by the abilities of human experts, we identify shortcomings of existing autonomous mobility algorithms for robots operating in off-road environments like planetary surfaces. We advocate for adaptive decision-making capabilities such as unassisted learning from past experiences and more reliance on stochastic world models. The aim of this work is to highlight promising research avenues to enhance ground planning tools and, ultimately, long-range autonomy algorithms on board planetary rovers.

Abstract:Simulation has deeply infiltrated into the development and validation of planetary rover technologies concerning mobility and autonomy, by providing large amounts of data in a variety of conditions and environments, as well as high-fidelity prototypes. Prevalent approaches for rover simulation focus either on physical behaviors or visual scenarios. In this article, we present a simulator named MarsSim developed upon Robotic Operating System/Gazebo platform that supports both physical and visual realistic simulations. The interaction between the wheel and the rough deformable terrain is modeled with improved contact solutions, and the model is integrated into a refined physical simulation architecture as an independent terramechanics plugin. Using multiscale planetary data and representation models, Martian scenarios are constructed, considering characteristics in terms of the surface, rock, and atmosphere. Compared with experiments, the terramechanics plugin shows great modeling accuracy in fitting interactive force/torque and slip-sinkage phenomenon. The simulation of traverses with a six-wheeled planetary rover on Martian landscape is demonstrated with near-photoreal images, coupled with physical-realistic locomotive data under different terrains.
Scientific Exploration of Challenging Planetary Analog Environments with a Team of Legged Robots

Abstract:The interest in exploring planetary bodies for scientific investigation and in-situ resource utilization is ever-rising. Yet, many sites of interest are inaccessible to state-of-the-art planetary exploration robots because of the robots' inability to traverse steep slopes, unstructured terrain, and loose soil. Additionally, current single-robot approaches only allow a limited exploration speed and a single set of skills. Here, we present a team of legged robots with complementary skills for exploration missions in challenging planetary analog environments. We equipped the robots with an efficient locomotion controller, a mapping pipeline for online and post-mission visualization, instance segmentation to highlight scientific targets, and scientific instruments for remote and in-situ investigation. Furthermore, we integrated a robotic arm on one of the robots to enable high-precision measurements. Legged robots can swiftly navigate representative terrains, such as granular slopes beyond 25 degrees, loose soil, and unstructured terrain, highlighting their advantages compared to wheeled rover systems. We successfully verified the approach in analog deployments at the BeyondGravity ExoMars rover testbed, in a quarry in Switzerland, and at the Space Resources Challenge in Luxembourg. Our results show that a team of legged robots with advanced locomotion, perception, and measurement skills, as well as task-level autonomy, can conduct successful, effective missions in a short time. Our approach enables the scientific exploration of planetary target sites that are currently out of human and robotic reach.

Field Assessment of Force Torque Sensors for Planetary Rover Navigation

Abstract:Proprioceptive sensors on planetary rovers serve for state estimation and for understanding terrain and locomotion performance. While inertial measurement units (IMUs) are widely used to this effect, force-torque sensors are less explored for planetary navigation despite their potential to directly measure interaction forces and provide insights into traction performance. This paper presents an evaluation of the performance and use cases of force-torque sensors based on data collected from a six-wheeled rover during tests over varying terrains, speeds, and slopes. We discuss challenges, such as sensor signal reliability and terrain response accuracy, and identify opportunities regarding the use of these sensors. The data is openly accessible and includes force-torque measurements from each of the six-wheel assemblies as well as IMU data from within the rover chassis. This paper aims to inform the design of future studies and rover upgrades, particularly in sensor integration and control algorithms, to improve navigation capabilities.

Abstract:Planetary exploration poses many challenges for a robot system: From weight and size constraints to extraterrestrial environment conditions, which constrain the suitable sensors and actuators. As the distance to other planets introduces a significant communication delay, the efficient operation of a robot system requires a high level of autonomy. In this work, we present our Lightweight Rover Unit (LRU), a small and agile rover prototype that we designed for the challenges of planetary exploration. Its locomotion system with individually steered wheels allows for high maneuverability in rough terrain and stereo cameras as its main sensors ensure the applicability to space missions. We implemented software components for self-localization in GPS-denied environments, autonomous exploration and mapping as well as computer vision, planning and control modules for the autonomous localization, pickup and assembly of objects with its manipulator. Additional high-level mission control components facilitate both autonomous behavior and remote monitoring of the system state over a delayed communication link. We successfully demonstrated the autonomous capabilities of our LRU at the SpaceBotCamp challenge, a national robotics contest with focus on autonomous planetary exploration. A robot had to autonomously explore an unknown Moon-like rough terrain, locate and collect two objects and assemble them after transport to a third object – which the LRU did on its first try, in half of the time and fully autonomously. The next milestone for our ongoing LRU development is an upcoming planetary exploration analogue mission to perform scientific experiments at a Moon analogue site located on a volcano.

Abstract:Over eleven years into its mission, the Mars Science Laboratory remains vital to NASA's Mars exploration. Safeguarding the rover's long-term functionality is a top mission priority. In this study, we introduce and test undercomplete autoencoder models for detecting drive anomalies, using telemetry data from wheel actuators, the Rover Inertial Measurement Unit (RIMU), and the suspension system. Our approach enhances post-drive data analysis during tactical downlink sessions. We explore various model architectures and input features to understand their impact on performance. Evaluating the models involves testing them on unseen data to mimic real-world scenarios. Our experiments demonstrate the undercomplete autoencoder model's effectiveness in detecting drive anomalies within the Curiosity rover dataset. Remarkably, the model even identifies subtle anomalous telemetry patterns missed by human operators. Additionally, we provide insights into optimal design choices by comparing different model architectures and input features. The model's ability to capture inconspicuous anomalies, potentially indicating early-stage failures, holds promise for the field, by improving the reliability and safety of future planetary exploration missions through early anomaly detection and proactive maintenance.

Abstract:A renewed interest in human exploration is flourishing among all the major spacefaring nations. In fact, in the complex scene of planned future space activities, the development of a Moon base and the human exploration of Mars might have the potential to renew the enthusiasm in expanding the human presence beyond the boundaries of Earth. Various initiatives have been undertaken to define scenarios and identify the required infrastructures and related technology innovations. The typical proposed approach follows a multistep strategy, starting with a series of precursor robotic missions to acquire further knowledge of the planet and to select the best potential landing sites, and evolving toward more demanding missions for the development of a surface infrastructure necessary to sustain human presence. The technologies involved in such a demanding enterprise range from typical space technologies, like transportation and propulsion, automation and robotics, rendezvous and docking, entry/reentry, aero-braking, navigation, and deep space communications, to human-specific issues like physiology, psychology, behavioral aspects, and nutritional science for long-duration exposure, that go beyond the traditional boundaries of space activities. Among the required elements to support planetary exploration, both for the precursor robotic missions and to sustain human exploration, rovers and trucks play a key role. A robust level of autonomy will need to be secured to perform preplanned operations, particularly for the surface infrastructure development, and a teleoperated support, either from Earth or from a local base, will enhance the in situ field exploration capability.

Abstract:The successes of previous and current Mars rovers have encouraged space agencies worldwide to pursue additional planetary exploration missions with more ambitious navigation goals. For example, NASA's planned Mars Sample Return mission will be a multi-year undertaking that will require a solar-powered rover to drive over 150 metres per sol for approximately three months. This paper reviews the mobility planning framework used by current rovers and surveys the major challenges involved in continuous long-distance navigation on the Red Planet. It also discusses recent work related to environment-aware and energy-aware navigation, and provides a perspective on how such work may eventually allow a solar-powered rover to achieve autonomous long-distance navigation on Mars.

Abstract:A prototype rover carrying an astrobiology payload was developed and deployed at analog field sites to mature generalized system architectures capable of searching for biosignatures in extreme terrain across the Solar System. Specifically, the four-legged Limbed Excursion Mechanical Utility Robot (LEMUR) 3 climbing robot with microspine grippers carried three instruments: a micro-X-ray fluorescence instrument based on the Mars 2020 mission's Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry provided elemental chemistry; a deep-ultraviolet fluorescence instrument based on Mars 2020's Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman and Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals mapped organics in bacterial communities on opaque substrates; and a near-infrared acousto-optic tunable filter-based point spectrometer identified minerals and organics in the 1.6-3.6 μm range. The rover also carried a light detection and ranging and a color camera for both science and navigation. Combined, this payload detects astrobiologically important classes of rock components (elements, minerals, and organics) in extreme terrain, which, as demonstrated in this work, can reveal a correlation between textural biosignatures and the organics or elements expected to preserve them in a habitable environment. Across >10 field tests, milestones were achieved in instrument operations, autonomous mobility in extreme terrain, and system integration that can inform future planetary science mission architectures. Contributions include (1) system-level demonstration of mock missions to the vertical exposures of Mars lava tube caves and Mars canyon walls, (2) demonstration of multi-instrument integration into a confocal arrangement with surface scanning capabilities, and (3) demonstration of automated focus stacking algorithms for improved signal-to-noise ratios and reduced operation time.
SPARTAN: Developing a Vision System for Future Autonomous Space Exploration Robots

Abstract:Mars exploration is expected to remain a focus of the scientific community in the years to come. A Mars rover should be highly autonomous because communication between the rover and the terrestrial operation center is difficult, and because the vehicle should spend as much of its traverse time as possible moving. Autonomous behavior of the rover implies that the vision system provides both a wide view to enable navigation and three‐dimensional (3D) reconstruction, and at the same time a close‐up view ensuring safety and providing reliable odometry data. The European Space Agency funded project “SPAring Robotics Technologies for Autonomous Navigation” (SPARTAN) aimed to develop an efficient vision system to cover all such aspects of autonomous exploratory rovers. This paper presents the development of such a system, starting from the requirements up to the testing of the working prototype. The vision system was designed with the intention of being efficient, low‐cost, and accurate and to be implemented using custom‐designed vectorial processing by means of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). A prototype of the complete vision system was developed, mounted on a basic mobile robot platform, and tested. The results on both real‐world Mars‐like and long‐range simulated data are presented in terms of 3D reconstruction and visual odometry accuracy, as well as execution speed. The developed system is found to fulfill the set requirements.

Abstract:The European Space Agency ESA is currently preparing the two deep space missions, Huygens and Rosetta. This paper reviews the related requirements for autonomous operations in a poorly known environment. While for Huygens emphasis is on the control of the descent through Titan's atmosphere, for Rosetta the safe drilling of material samples in the microgravity environment of a comet is analysed. The control concepts to enable adaptive reactions in an uncertain, remote environment are summarized for the crucial mission phases. The performance results obtained from computer simulations are presented and discussed.

Abstract:Abstract In January 2004, NASA's twin Mars Exploration Rovers (MERs), Spirit and Opportunity, began searching the surface of Mars for evidence of past water activity. To localize and approach scientifically interesting targets, the rovers employ an onboard navigation system. Given the latency in sending commands from Earth to the Martian rovers (and in receiving return data), a high level of navigational autonomy is desirable. Autonomous navigation with hazard avoidance (AutoNav) is currently performed using a local path planner called GESTALT (grid‐based estimation of surface traversability applied to local terrain) that incorporates terrain and obstacle information generated from stereo cameras. GESTALT works well at guiding the rovers around narrow and isolated hazards; however, it is susceptible to failure when clusters of closely spaced, nontraversable rocks form extended obstacles. In May 2005, a new technology task was initiated at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to address this limitation. Specifically, a version of the Field D* global path planner was integrated into MER flight software, enabling simultaneous local and global planning during AutoNav. A revised version of AutoNav was then uploaded to the rovers during the summer of 2006.
